We report what is believed to be the first demonstration of the laser action of Yb3+ -doped Gd2SiO5 (Yb:GSO) crystal pumped by a 940-nm laser diode at room temperature. The threshold of laser generation is only 0.85 kW/cm(2), which is smaller than the theoretic threshold of Yb:YAG (1.54 kW/cm(2)). The laser wavelength is 1090 mn. With a 2.5% output coupler, the maximum output power is 415 mW under a pump power of 5 W. By using the SESAM, the Q-switched mode locking and CW mode-locked operations are demonstrated.

A low-threshold passively continuous-wave (CW) mode-locked Nd:YVO4 solid-state laser was demonstrated by use of a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The threshold for continuous-wave mode-locked is relatively low, about 2.15 W. The maximum average output power was 2.12 W and the optical to optical conversion efficiency was about 32%. The pulse width was about 15 ps with the repetition rate of 105 MHz. (C) 2008 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

The use of glasses doped with PbS nanocrystals as intracavity saturable absorbers for passive Q-switching and mode locking of c-cut Nd:Gd0.7Y0.3VO4, Nd:YVO4, and Nd:GdVO4 lasers is investigated. Q-switching yields pulses as short as 35 ns with an average output power of 435 mW at a repetition rate of 6–12 kHz at a pump power of 5–6 W. Mode locking through a combination of PbS nanocrystals and a Kerr lens results in 1.4 ps long pulses with an average output power of 255 mW at a repetition rate of 100 MHz.

An efficient diode-pumped laser was demonstrated by using an ytterbium-doped laser crystal, Yb:Gd2SiO5 (Yb:GSO), wherein Yb3+ ions exhibit the largest ground-state splitting among all the ytterbium-doped crystals. The Yb:GSO laser can be operated at a low pumping threshold, and the most efficient laser occurs around 1088 nm since the corresponding emission band has the largest emission cross section and the lowest thermal population. A slope efficiency of 75% was demonstrated for a continuous-wave Yb:GSO laser at 1094 nm, and self-pulsed lasers were achieved within the tunable range of 1091-1105 nm, which are the longest laser wavelengths achieved for Yb3+ lasers. For the first time to our knowledge, the laser performance of Yb3+, Na+-codoped CaF2 single crystals was demonstrated. Self-Q-switched laser operation at 1050nm was observed for 976 nm diode pumping at room temperature. On 5 W of incident power, the repetition rate and width of the self-Q-switched pulses reached 28 kHz and 1.5 mu s, respectively. A maximal slope efficiency of 20.3% and minimal threshold absorbed pump power of 30 mW were respectively achieved with different output couplers, showing the promising application of Yb3+, Na+-codoped CaF2 crystals as compact and efficient solid-state lasers. A bulk crystal of Yb:Sc2SiO5 (Yb:SSO) with favorable thermal properties was successfully obtained by the Czochralski method. The energy level diagrams for Yb:SSO crystal were determined by optical spectroscopic analysis and semi-empirical crystal-field calculations using the simple overlap model. The full width at half maximum of the absorption band centering at 976 nm was calculated to be 24 nm with a peak absorption cross-section of 9.2x10(-21) cm(2). The largest ground-state splitting of Yb3+ ions is up to 1027 cm(-1) in a SSO crystal host. Efficient diode-pumped laser performance of Yb:SSO was primarily demonstrated with a slope efficiency of 45% and output power of 3.55 W.

We demonstrate a low-threshold and efficient diode-pumped passively continuous wave (CW) mode-locked Nd:GdVO4 laser with a reflective semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). The threshold for the continuous wave was 0.36 W, and it is the lowest threshold for a continuous wave in a passively mode-locked Nd:GdVO4 laser to our knowledge. The maximum average output power of 1.82 W was obtained at a pump power of 6.65 W with a slope efficiency of about 29%. The CW mode-locked pulse duration was measured to be about 10.5 ps with a 116-MHz repetition rate.

By using a semiconductor saturable-absorber output coupler as a mode-locking device, we experimentally realized the operation of a diode-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser. Stable laser pulses with duration of 2.3 ps were generated at the output power of about 1 W. With increasing the pump power to 9 W, the maximum mode-locked power of 1.7 W was obtained, which corresponds to a slope conversion efficiency of 44% and optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 19%.

We have demonstrated a passively Q-switched and mode-locked Nd:YVO4 laser with an intracavity composite semiconductor saturable absorber (ICSSA). Stable Q-switched and mode-locked pulses with Q-switched envelope pulse duration of 180 ns and pulse repetition rate of 72KHz have been obtained. The maximum average output power was 1.45W at 8W incident pump power. The repetition rate of the mode-locked pulses inside the Q-switched envelope was 154 MHz. Experimental results revealed that this ICSSA was suitable for Q-switched and mode-locked solid-state lasers. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We have demonstrated a self-staring passively continuous-wave mode-locked diode end-pumped Nd:YLF laser with a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror of single-quantum-well (In0.25Ga0.75As) grown by metal-organic chemical-vapor deposition technique at low temperature. The saturable absorber was used as nonlinear absorber and output coupler simultaneously. Stable pulse duration of 3 ps has been achieved at the repetition rate of 98 MHz. The average output power was 530 mW at 1053 nm under the incident pump power of 10 W, corresponding to the peak power of 1.8 kW and pulse energy of 5.4 nJ.

Summary form only given. Broadly tunable compact visible laser sources in the spectral region of 500-650 nm are valuable in biophotonics, photomedicine and for many applications including spectroscopy, laser projection and confocal microscopy. Unfortunately, commercially available lasers of this spectral range are in practice bulky and inconvenient in use. An attractive method for the realization of portable visible laser sources is the frequency-doubling of the infrared laser diodes in a nonlinear crystal containing a waveguide [1]. Nonlinear crystal waveguides that offer an order-of-magnitude increase in the IR-to-visible conversion efficiency also enable a very different approach to second-harmonic generation (SHG) tunability in periodically-poled crystals, promising order-of-magnitude increase of wavelength range for SHG conversion. This is possible by utilization of a significant difference in the effective refractive indices of the high-order and low-order modes in multimode waveguides [2]. The recent availability of low-cost, good quality semiconductor diode lasers, offering the coverage of a broad spectral range between 1 µ?? and 1.3 µp? [3,4], in combination with well-established techniques to fabricate good quality waveguides in nonlinear crystals, allows compact tunable CW laser sources in the visible spectral region to be realized [2].
