The palladium catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of phenyltrifluoroborate with a chemoenzymatically derived bromoazidoconduritol, combined with 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, with a variety of alkynes is described. Fourteen new compounds were synthesized in moderate to good yields. The click chemistry reaction can be effected by using sodium ascorbate and CuSO(4) center dot 5H(2)O as catalyst in toluene-H(2)O at room temperature.

Seeds sprouts have been used as a good source of basic nutrients and nutraceutical compounds. The high nutritional value of seeds derives from the deposition of compounds during development. However some of these molecules are used in metabolic processes like germination, which leads to a considerable variation in their concentrations once these events are completed. In this work, we investigate the levels of inositols (myo-inositol, D-pinitol and ononitol), soluble carbohydrates and proteins in cotyledons of Phaseolus vulgaris and Vigna unguiculata sprouts. Sprouting increased myo-inositol and glucose content and reduction of raffinose and ononitol was observed. The protein levels increased in P. vulgaris and decreased in V. unguiculata sprouting. The level of sucrose was maintained in both sprouts. D-Pinitol was detected only in quiescent seeds. Our results suggested that bean sprout is an important source of proteins, sucrose, glucose and myo-inositol. Additionally, bean sprouts have low levels of raffinose, an antinutritional compound.

The palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of potassium alkynyltrifluoroborates with a chemoenzymatically derived deoxyconduritol is described. Six new compounds were synthesized in moderate to good yields. The alkynyl cross-coupling reaction can be effected using 10 mol% of Pd(PPh(3))(4) as Catalyst in toluene-H(2)O in the presence Of Cs(2)CO(3) as the inorganic base. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. A cyclitol galactoside was isolated from the seeds of Vigna angularis and shown to be identical with galactosylononitol. However, detailed 2D NMR data and methylation analysis resulted in the revision of the structure of galactosylononitol to O-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->3)-4-O-methyl-D-myo-inositol (1). Thus, compound 1 represents the only naturally occuring methylated derivative of galactinol.

A digalactosyl ononitol was isolated from seeds of adzuki bean (Vigna angularis [Willd.] Ohwi et Ohasi). Analysis of hydrolysis products and NMR spectroscopy established its structure as O-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->6)-O-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl-(1-->3)-O-methyl- D-myo-inositol. Biflavones and a chalcone flavone tetramer were isolated from the leaves of Aristolochia ridicula, together with proto-quercitol. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

From the ethanol extract of Aristolochia gigantea Mart an 8-benzylberbine-type alkaloid and an N-oxide were isolated together with pinitol and sequoyitol. Structural assignments were based on analysis of spectral data, mainly by 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques. (C) 1997 Elsevier B.V. Ltd.

We have investigated the delivery of terrestrial organic carbon (OC) to the Amazon shelf and deep sea fan based on soil marker bacteriohopanepolyols (BHPs; adenosylhopane and related compounds) and branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs), as well as on 14C dating of bulk organic matter. The microbial biomarker records show persistent burial of terrestrial OC, evidenced by almost constant and high BIT values (0.6) and soil marker BHP concentration [80-230 µg/g TOC (total OC)] on the late Holocene shelf and even higher BIT values (0.8-0.9), but lower and more variable soil-marker BHP concentration (40-100 µg/g TOC), on the past glacial deep sea fan. Radiocarbon data show that OC on the shelf is 3-4 kyr older than corresponding bivalve shells, emphasizing the presence of old carbon in this setting. We observe comparable and unexpectedly invariant BHP composition in both marine sediment records, with a remarkably high relative abundance of C-35 amino BHPs including compounds specific for aerobic methane oxidation on the shelf (avg. 50% of all BHPs) and the fan (avg. 40%). Notably, these marine BHP signatures are strikingly similar to those of a methane-producing floodplain area in one of the Amazonian wetland (várzea) regions. The observation indicates that BHPs in the marine sediments may have initially been produced within wetland regions of the Amazon basin and may therefore document persistent export from terrestrial wetland regions, with subsequent re-working in the marine environment, both during recent and past glacial climate conditions.
