Dielectric ceramics have been widely investigated and used for microwave applications such as resonators and filters. The present study deals with the influence of sintering temperature on microwave dielectric properties of TiO2 ceramics with 10, 20, and 30 wt% ZrO2. Three compositions have been developed through mixing procedures and then tested for each sintering temperature: 1500 and 1400°C. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy are carried out aiming to explain the ceramic behavior of each sample. The dielectric constants of different ceramics for both temperatures varied from 85.4 to 62.6, while their quality factor due to dielectric losses varied from 3110 to 1630. The Q decrease is attributed to the non uniform grain growth and to the obtained crystalline phases. The best microwave parameters were obtained for the ceramics sintered at 1400°C, which can be applied in microwave circuits as dielectric resonators. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications.

Major-, trace-, and rare-earth element analyses are presented from a suite of basaltic rocks from the basement of the Celebes Sea. The major elements and trace-elements were determined by X-ray fluorescence techniques, and the rare-earth elements were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Compositionally the Celebes Sea basalts are very similar to typical normal mid-ocean ridge basalts, such as those described from the Indian Ocean triple junction. Petrogenetic modeling shows that all of the basalts analyzed can be formed by 10% to 20% partial melting of a light rare-earth element-depleted spinel lherzolite followed by fractional crystallization of mixtures of olivine, Plagioclase, and iron oxide. The Celebes Sea is interpreted as a fragment of the basement of the Jurassic Argo abyssal plain trapped during the Eocene to the north of Australia.

Major-, trace-, and rare-earth element analyses of the basaltic rocks recovered from the basement of the Sulu Sea and of lithic clasts from the pyroclastic unit representing the acoustic basement of the Cagayan Ridge, are presented. The major and trace elements were measured by X-ray fluorescence techniques, and rare-earth elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis. These data show that the Sulu Sea basalts are back-arc tholeiites and the lithic clasts are basalts, basaltic andesites, and andesites typical of volcanic arc suites erupted on continental crust. Petrogenetic modeling is used to show that the Sulu Sea basalts were derived from a heterogeneous mantle, probably representing subcontinental lithosphere, with contributions from a subduction component. The Sulu Sea is interpreted as a back-arc basin formed by rifting of an Oligocene to early Miocene volcanic arc leaving the Cagayan Ridge as a remnant arc. This event occurred during northward subduction of the Celebes Sea basement beneath the Oligocene to early Miocene arc.

Independent of the sample form (powder or film), XRD analysis of Ir0,3Ti(0,7-x)Ce xO2, (nominal) mixtures, for x=0, shows the formation of a solid solution phase between IrO2 and TiO2, as well as the rutile phases of IrO2 and TiO2. The presence of the anatase phase of TiO2 is also confirmed. The introduction of 30 mol% CeO2 in the mixture reveals the presence of the CeO2 and Ce2O3 phases, besides the already mentioned ones, in the powder. In the film form, however, an amorphous phase is identified. When all of the TiO2 is substituded by CeO2, for both sample forms, the only phases found are IrO2, CeO2 and Ce2O3. This result suggests cerium oxides are not capable of forming solid solutions with either IrO2 or (Ir,Ti)O2 acting solely as a dispersant matrix for these phases. These results are consistent with the much higher electrochemically active surface area when CeO2 is introduced in the binary Ti/Ir0,3Ti0,7O2 mixture. It was possible to establish a relationship between the electrochemical stability of the supported films and their crystalline structure. The unexpected presence of TiO2 and Ti2O3 in the Ti/Ir0,3Ce0,7O2 (film sample) is attributed to oxidation of the Ti support during the calcination step.

Different (Sn,Ti)O2 compositions were sintered at 1450 °C for 2 h with the purpose of investigating their sintering and mass transport properties. Highly dense ceramics were obtained and their structural properties studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The changes in lattice parameters were analyzed by the Rietveld method and two mass transport mechanisms were observed during sintering in different temperature ranges, evidenced by the linear shrinkage rate as a function of temperature. The effect of the concentration of TiO2 on mass transport and densiffication during sintering was analyzed by considering the intrinsic defects. System densiffication was attributed to a mass transport mechanism in the SnO2 matrix, caused by the presence of TiO2, which formed a solid solution phase. The change in the mass transport mechanism was attributed to chemical bonding between SnO2 and TiO2, which improves ionic difusion as the concentration of TiO2 increased in (Sn,Ti)O2 compositions. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. The (Sn,Ti)O2, system has a great interest due to its technological applications such as gas sensor and varistor. Although the thermodynamic properties and the kinetics of spinoidal decomposition in this system have been extensively studied, the general properties and applications of SnO2 - TiO2 binary compositions have been not investigated yet in depth. On the other hand, little work has been done to optimize the synthesis methods to obtain (Sn,Ti)O2 cerallmic powders, with pre - determinate physical and chemical characteristics. In this work the ceramic powders has been obtained by coprecipitation and polymeric precursor (Pechini) methods. The different physical chemistry phenomena that occurred during the synthesis were discussed. The (Sn,Ti)O2, ceramic powders were characterized with X- ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (DTA/TG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The knowledge about of steps and variables of synthesis process acquired with development of this work, we permited to obtain (Sn, Ti)O2, nanometers particles to low temperatures: to 450°C for coprecipitation method and to 600°C for Pechini method. The spinodal decomposition that ocurr to 900°C was discussed also.

For microwave applications, including mobile and satellite communications, ceramic resonators should have a high dielectric constant, low dielectric losses, and high frequency stability. In this sense, TiO2-ZrO 2 ceramics have been investigated as a function of sintering behavior, phase composition, and microstructure. The ceramics were densified reaching a value of about 86% of theoretical density at 1400°C sintering temperature. The ceramics are prepared by mixing raw materials with the following TiO2-ZrO2 weight % ratio: 100 to 0, 90 to 10, and 80 to 20, respectively. The measured dielectric constants are between 79 and 88 values, while the quality factor due to dielectric losses are between 2820 and 5170. These results point out the influence of Ti/Zr ratio on controlling the dielectric properties. © (2010) Trans Tech Publications.

Three manganese nodules from the Pacific Ocean have been analysed for 35 elements by using mainly spectrophotometric and spectrographic methods. Cu, Co, Ni, Zn, and Pb were found in amounts approaching 1 %, which far exceeds their average concentrations in igneous rocks. On the other hand, elements having readily hydrolysable ions, such as Ga, Sc, Zr, Y, La and Ti, are present only in amounts comparable with their concentrations in igneous rocks. Sb, Bit Be, and Cr were not detected. The hydrochloric acid-insoluble fraction of nodules is practically free of the heavy metals that are characteristic of the acid-soluble fraction; it consists principally of clay minerals, together with lesser amounts of quartz, apatite, biotite and sodium and potassium felspars.

Original geological, geophysical, lithological, mineralogical data on uplifts of the Central Atlantic are given in the book based on materials of Cruise 1 of the R/V Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov. Geological and geophysical studies include description of the obtained material and analysis of structural and morphological elements of the ocean floor. Results of lithological, petrochemical and geochemical studies were extremely innovative and develop a conceptual model. The latter include studies of petrochemical evolution of tholeiitic alkaline plate volcanism, large-scale hydrothermal transformation of basement rocks - palygorskitization, phosphatization and ferromanganese mineralization. Showing imposition Superposition of hydrogenic alteration on hydrothermally altered rocks and its role in Cenozoic history of sedimentation is shown.
