In this paper we study a nonlinear evolution inclusion of subdifferential type in Hilbert spaces. The perturbation term is Hausdorff continuous in the state variable and has closed but not necessarily convex values. Our result is a stochastic generalization of an existence theorem proved by Kravvaritis and Papageorgiou in [6].

The aim of this paper is to investigate to what extent the known theory of subdifferentiability and generic differentiability of convex functions defined on open sets can be carried out in the context of convex functions defined on not necessarily open sets. Among the main results obtained I would like to mention a Kenderov type theorem (the subdifferential at a generic point is contained in a sphere), a generic Gâteaux differentiability result in Banach spaces of class S and a generic Fréchet differentiability result in Asplund spaces. At least two methods can be used to prove these results: first, a direct one, and second, a more general one, based on the theory of monotone operators. Since this last theory was previously developed essentially for monotone operators defined on open sets, it was necessary to extend it to the context of monotone operators defined on a larger class of sets, our "quasi open" sets. This is done in Chapter III. As a matter of fact, most of these results have an even more general nature and have roots in the theory of minimal usco maps, as shown in Chapter II.

This article continues the investigation of stationarity and regularity properties of infinite collections of sets in a Banach space started in Kruger and López (J. Optim. Theory Appl. 154(2), 2012), and is mainly focused on the application of the stationarity criteria to infinitely constrained optimization problems. We consider several settings of optimization problems which involve (explicitly or implicitly) infinite collections of sets and deduce for them necessary conditions characterizing stationarity in terms of dual space elements—normals and/or subdifferentials.

We consider the question whether the assumption of convexity of the set involved in Clarke-Ledyaev inequality can be relaxed. In the case when the point is outside the convex hull of the set we show that Clarke-Ledyaev type inequality holds if and only if there is certain geometrical relation between the point and the set.

The first motivation for this note is to obtain a general version of the following result: let E be a Banach space and f : E → R be a differentiable function, bounded below and satisfying the Palais-Smale condition; then, f is coercive, i.e., f(x) goes to infinity as ||x|| goes to infinity. In recent years, many variants and extensions of this result appeared, see [3], [5], [6], [9], [14], [18], [19] and the references therein. A general result of this type was given in [3, Theorem 5.1] for a lower semicontinuous function defined on a Banach space, through an approach based on an abstract notion of subdifferential operator, and taking into account the “smoothness” of the Banach space. Here, we give (Theorem 1) an extension in a metric setting, based on the notion of slope from [11] and coercivity is considered in a generalized sense, inspired by [9]; our result allows to recover, for example, the coercivity result of [19], where a weakened version of the Palais-Smale condition is used. Our main tool (Proposition 1) is a consequence of Ekeland’s variational principle extending [12, Corollary 3.4], and deals with a function f which is, in some sense, the “uniform” Γ-limit of a sequence of functions.

The paper contains calculus rules for coderivatives of compositions, sums and intersections of set-valued mappings. The types of coderivatives considered correspond to Dini-Hadamard and limiting Dini-Hadamard subdifferentials in Gˆateaux differentiable spaces, Fréchet and limiting Fréchet subdifferentials in Asplund spaces and approximate subdifferentials in arbitrary Banach spaces. The key element of the unified approach to obtaining various calculus rules for various types of derivatives presented in the paper are simple formulas for subdifferentials of marginal, or performance functions.

The existence of viable solutions is proven for nonautonomous upper semicontinuous differential inclusions whose right-hand side is contained in the Clarke subdifferential of a locally Lipschitz continuous function.
