A universalidade poética de Rilke na formação do Grupo dos Novos: tradução e confluências na Amazônia brasileira

Esta dissertação objetiva pensar os desdobramentos que as traduções da poesia de Rainer Maria Rilke alcançaram no cenário do Suplemento Literário da Folha do Norte - SL/FN e em outros periódicos das décadas de 1940 e 1950, em que foram publicadas. Consideramos que estas traduções foram um indício de intensificação da abertura universalizante das letras paraenses às novidades modernistas iniciadas na Semana de Arte Moderna de 1922. Tais traduções foram cruciais para a formação do Grupo dos Novos, composto principalmente de nomes como Benedito Nunes, Mário Faustino e Paulo Plinio Abreu, além do antropólogo alemão Peter Paul Hilbert. O suporte teórico-metodológico será a utilização dos conceitos de Weltliteratur (Literatura universal) de Goethe e Reflexionsmedium (Médium-de-reflexão) de Benjamin. Estas matrizes interligarão os campos da história, da filosofia da linguagem e da tradução para refletirmos sobre o impacto dessas traduções na Amazônia brasileira da época. Outro conceito importante nesta dissertação é o de Bildung (formação), pensado a partir da leitura de Antoine Berman quando ele o relaciona à tradução, incluindo vários fenômenos que envolvem as relações tradutórias entre culturas e línguas. Ao final, por meio da reflexão tradutológica de Haroldo de Campos, visamos observar possíveis confluências nas produções poéticas e críticas de Mário Faustino, Manuel Bandeira e Paulo Plínio Abreu, como resultante do processo relacional promovido por estas traduções.

The Rilke of Ruth Speirs: new poems, Duino Elegies, Sonnets to Orpheus & others

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) is universally recognized as among the most important twentieth-century German-language poets. Here, for the first time, are all the surviving translations of his poetry made by Ruth Speirs (1916-2000), a Latvian exile who joined the British literary community in Cairo during World War Two, becoming a close friend of Lawrence Durrell and Bernard Spencer. Though described as ‘excellent’ and ‘the best’ by J. M. Cohen on the basis of magazine and anthology appearances, copyright restrictions meant that during her lifetime, with the exception of a Cairo-published Selected Poems (1942), Speirs was never to see her work gathered between covers and in print. This volume, edited by John Pilling and Peter Robinson, brings Speirs’ translations the belated recognition they deserve. Her much-revised and considered versions are a key document in the history of Rilke’s Anglophone dissemination. Rhythmically alive and carefully faithful, they give a uniquely mid-century English accent to the poet’s extraordinary German, and continue to bear comparison with current efforts to render his tenderly taxing voice.

Análise da Escolha Profissional: diálogos necessários e caminhos possíveis

O objetivo central deste estudo é apresentar, no âmbito da psicologia com bases na fenomenologia e na filosofia da existência, uma prática clínica frente à indecisão com relação à escolha da atividade profissional a seguir. Para situarmos o lugar no qual buscamos nossos fundamentos, iniciamos este trabalho apresentando as diferentes perspectivas em Orientação Vocacional. Para tanto, utilizamos como critério de identificação de cada uma dessas modalidades as ênfases em que cada uma delas sustenta seus fundamentos e consequentes práticas. São elas: o psiquismo, o social e a existência, sendo essa última a ênfase na qual situamos a nossa proposta. A fim de preparar as bases desta proposta, buscamos na fenomenologia hermenêutica de Martin Heidegger as condições de possibilidade para outra modalidade de atuação frente à indecisão profissional e é dialogando com a literatura, que mostramos a viabilidade dessa prática. Em Cartas a um jovem poeta, de Rainer Maria Rilke, e A repetição, de Sören Kierkegaard, apresentamos como esses dois escritores apontam para a crítica a uma orientação que dirige a escolha, para então exemplificar como podemos acompanhar a escolha do outro sem proceder a uma orientação diretiva. Por fim, de posse dos fundamentos filosóficos de Martin Heidegger e com as indicações dos poetas Rilke e Kierkegaard, apresentaremos um modo de atuação clínica frente à indecisão da escolha profissional, que denominamos de Análise da Escolha Profissional.

Astonishing apples: visualising the novel

This paper explores the developing relationship between fictional and visual representations. The impact of visual art on the novel as mimetic is an issue that writers have engaged with and written about from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day, often raising the question of the art/life dialectic and how it has evolved through the novel’s exploration of ideas. From painting, photography, cinema, television and newer digital visual cultures writers have sought to involve themselves in a critical examination of the impact of changes in these forms on other art form and on wider society. How do these visual forms affect what it means to be an artist, a writer, a human being? The paper takes the work of Paul Cezanne as a starting point in the history of representation. Writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke, theorists such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, and other artists like Picasso, have been influenced by, or responded to, Cezanne’s work and to Cezanne’s writings on art and his letters to his great childhood friend, the novelist Emile Zola. By discussing the creative practice of writing a novel this paper will examine questions of how the novel can, and should, respond to the impact of visual culture’s seeming dominance over other art forms. It also explores what impact new forms of visual culture have had upon the mimetic and formal aspects of the novel and how the novel works as representational, especially in relation to representations of human consciousness. „Welch werthvolle und kunstreich geschmiedete kleine Sache.“

Richard Schaukal (1874-1942) wurde als Dichter ignoriert, als Übersetzer geschätzt und als Literaturkritiker geachtet. Es ist erstaunlich, dass dieses Tätigkeitsfeld unvollständig aufgearbeitet ist, zumal bedeutende Exponenten der Zeit wie Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse oder Rainer Maria Rilke Schaukal um Besprechungen ihrer Werke baten. Er verfasste für zahlreiche Publikationsorgane meist unbequeme Essays, die sich − mehr noch als seine dichterischen Arbeiten − in den Diskurs der kulturkonservativen kritischen Moderne einschrieben. Mit Blick auf seine frühe Phase als Literaturkritiker werden Richard Schaukals ästhetische Positionen, Einflüsse und Funktionen untersucht. Abschließend wird sein Aufsatz über Ferdinand von Saar (1899) einer exemplarischen Analyse unterzogen.

Sound Seam

A moving image work based on research with neurologists and audiologists, collectors and archivists. The film gives voice to the idea that every surface, in particular parts of our anatomy, is potentially inscribed with an unheard sound or echoes of voices from the past. The soundtrack’s musical composition is interlaced with a voice-over which draws on Rainer Maria Rilke’s text 'Primal Sound', where he reflects on the possibility of playing the coronal suture of a skull with a phonograph needle. The film uses microscopic photography, scanning electron microscopy, and sounds of otoacoustic emissions to uncover haunting aural bonescapes. The voiceovers too are recorded using old sound technology as a filter - writing and over-writing of wax cylinder to create unexpected scratches, glitches, loops and echoes.
