The ablation technique consisted of making an incision across the eyeball to allow free flow of fluids while holding the prawn under water, squeezing the eyeball contents outwards, and pinching hard the eyestalk tissue. The cut area heals completely in about a week; no application of antibiotics is necessary. Spent spawners were tagged with thin brass rings (Rodriguez, 1976) around the unablated eyestalk for a separate experiment on rematuration. Two spawning yielding approximately 277,000 eggs were obtained three weeks after ablation, followed four days later by two more spawnings with 160,000 eggs; all four spawners weighed more than 100 g. With a hatching rate of 98% and 78% for the first and second batch, respectively, the spawnings produced viable nauplii. Water temperatures as low as 23 degree C due to a delayed cold spell in March depressed molting; weakened larvae had to be discharged at the mysis stage. Although ovarian development continued, no further spawnings were obtained due mainly to the onset of bacterial and fungal disease. Infection is initiated in injured portions of the exoskeleton, sometimes penetrating right through the muscles to the ovarian tissues. The non-flowthrough conditions and mussel meat feeding led to fouling of the culture water resulting in consecutive mortalities caused by disease. Female P.monodon held in maturation pens were ablated at the age of 15 months (Santiago, et al., 1976); they averaged only 16 g body weight after four months growth in ponds. In another experiment, pond-reared P.monodon females ranging from 50 to 80 g were ablated at approximately seven months (Aquacop, 1977). The present results show a minimum age of four months from postlarve that P.monodon is capable of ovarian development and spawning upon ablation. However, maturation is probably affected by size as well as age - the four-month old females weighed an average of 100 g in contrast to the smaller animals in the earlier experiments.

Consumption of arsenic (As) wine is a traditional activity during the classic Chinese festival of Duanwu, colloquially known worldwide as the Dragon Boat Day. Arsenic wine is drunk on the morning of the fifth day of the fifth lunar calendar month to commemorate the death of Qu Yuan, a famed Chinese poet who drowned himself in protest of a corrupt government, and to protect against ill fortune. Although realgar minerals are characteristically composed of sparingly soluble tetra-arsenic tetra-sulfides (As(4)S(4)), purity does vary with up to 10% of As being present as non-sulfur bound species, such as arsenate (As(v)) and arsenite (As(III)). Despite, the renewed interest in As speciation and the bioaccessibility of the active As components in realgar based Chinese medicines, little is known about the safety surrounding the cultural practice of drinking As wine. In a series of experiments the speciation and solubility of As in a range of wines were investigated. Furthermore, a simulated gastrointestinal system was employed to predict the impact of digestive processes on As bioavailability. The predominant soluble As species found in all the wines were As(III) and As(v). Based on typical As wine recipes employing 0.1 g realgar mL(-1) wine, the concentration of dissolved As ranged from ca. 100 to 400 mg L(-1) depending on the ethanol content of the preparation: with the As solubility found to be higher in wines with a lower proportion of ethanol. Based on a common 100 mL measure of wine with a concentration of 400 mg As L(-1), the amount of soluble As would equate to around half of the acute minimal lethal dose for adults. This is likely an underestimate of the bioaccessible concentration, as a three-fold increase in bioaccessibility could be observed in the intestinal phase based on the results from the stimulated gastrointestinal system. La sepsis es un evento inflamatorio generalizado del organismo inducido por un daño causado generalmente por un agente infeccioso. El patógeno más frecuentemente asociado con esta entidad es el Staphylococcus aureus, responsable de la inducción de apoptosis en células endoteliales debida a la producción de ceramida. Se ha descrito el efecto protector de la proteína C activada (PCA) en sepsis y su relación con la disminución de la apoptosis de las células endoteliales. En este trabajo se analizó la activación de las quinasas AKT, ASK1, SAPK/JNK y p38 en un modelo de apoptosis endotelial usando las técnicas de Western Blotting y ELISA. Las células endoteliales (EA.hy926), se trataron con C2-ceramida (130μM) en presencia de inhibidores químicos de cada una de estas quinasas y PCA. La supervivencia de las células en presencia de inhibidores químicos y PCA fue evaluada por medio de ensayos de activación de las caspasas 3, 7 y 9, que verificaban la muerte celular por apoptosis. Los resultados evidencian que la ceramida reduce la activación de AKT y aumenta la activación de las quinasas ASK, SAPK/JNK y p38, en tanto que PCA ejerce el efecto contrario. Adicionalmente se encontró que la tiorredoxina incrementa la activación/fosforilación de AKT, mientras que la quinasa p38 induce la defosforilación de AKT.

The inhibitory effects of nitrite (NO2-)/free nitrous acid (HNO2-FNA) on the metabolism of Nitrobacter were investigated using a method allowing the decoupling of the growth and energy generation processes. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor was operated for the enrichment of a Nitrobacter culture. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis showed that 73% of the bacterial population was Nitrobacter. Batch tests were carried out to assess the oxygen and nitrite consumption rates of the enriched culture at low and high nitrite levels, in the presence or absence of inorganic carbon. It was observed that in the absence of CO2, the Nitrobacter culture was able to oxidize nitrite at a rate that is 76% of that in the presence of CO2, with an oxygen consumption rate that is 85% of that measured in the presence of CO2. This enabled the impacts of nitrite/FNA on the catabolic and anabolic processes of Nitrobacter to be assessed separately. FNA rather than nitrite was likely the actual inhibitor to the Nitrobacter metabolism. It was revealed that FNA of up to 0.05 mg HNO2-N center dot L-1 (3.4 mu M), which was the highest FNA concentration used in this study, did not have any inhibitory effect on the catabolic processes of Nitrobacter. However, FNA initiated its inhibition to the anabolic processes of Nitrobacter at approximately 0.011 mg HNO2-N center dot L-1 (0.8 mu M), and completely stopped biomass synthesis at a concentration of approximately 0.023 mg HNO2-N center dot L-1 (1.6 mu M). The inhibitory effect could be described by an empirical inhibitory model proposed in this paper, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be revealed.

Nanocrystalline ZnO powders have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of as-formed and heat treated ZnO shows strong violet (402, 421, 437, 485 nm) and weak green (520 nm) emission peaks respectively. The PL intensities of defect related emission bands decrease with calcinations temperature indicating the decrease of Zn(i) and V(o)(+) caused by the chemisorptions of oxygen. The results are correlated with the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. Thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of gamma irradiated ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a single broad glow peak at similar to 343 degrees C. This can be attributed to the recombination of charge carriers released from the surface states associated with oxygen defects, mainly interstitial oxygen ion centers. The trapping parameters of ZnO irradiated with various gamma-doses are calculated using peak shape method. It is observed that the glow peak intensity increases with increase of gamma dose without changing glow curve shape. These two characteristic properties such as TL intensity increases with gamma dose and simple glow curve structure is an indication that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles might be used as good TL dosimeter for high temperature application. 本文通过LnCl_3·2LiCl (Ln=La, Nd)和等摩尔的CH_3C_5H_4Na在四氢呋喃中于室温反应,得到了一种新的阴离子型配合物[Li(THF)_2]_2 (M-Cl)_4[(η~5-CH_3C_5H_4)Ln·THF] (Ln=La, Nd),对其进行了元素分析,红外光谱和核磁谱的鉴定,并测得了[Li(THF)_2]_2 (M-Cl)_4[(η~5-CH_3C_5H_4)Nd·THF]的X-光晶体结构。晶体属单斜晶系,空间群为P_(21/n),晶脆参数为a=12.130(5),b=17.343(5),c=17.016(5)A,β=108.54(3)°,V=3393.87A~3,E=4,R=0.0505,中心钕原子分别与CH_3Cp~-。THF和四个桥氯配位,形成稳定的八配位的八面体结构。通过[Li(THF)_2]_2(M-Cl)_4[(η~5-CH_3C_5H_4)Nd·THF]与2摩尔的t-BuLi在四氢呋喃和戊烷的混和溶液中反应,分离得到一种新的阴离子型配合物晶体,经元素分析,红外光谱,核磁和水解色质谱的鉴定,证明为[Li(DME)_3][(η~5-CH_3C_5H_4)Nd(t-Bu)_3],此配合物不仅对空气和水汽极为敏感,而且对温度也很敏感,即使在-5 ℃下放置也会逐渐分解,发生β-H消除。我们进一步研究了LnCl_3·2LiCl与2摩尔的C_5H_5Na的四氢呋喃反应液在低温下与等摩尔的CH_3Li乙醚溶液反应,从中分离得到一种新的阴离子型烷基配合物晶体[Li(DME)_3][(η~5-C_5H_5)_3LnCH_3] (Ln=La, Nd)对其进行了元素分析,红外光谱,核磁和水解色质谱的鉴定。此外,从这一反应中还得到另一种副产物,经X-光结构鉴定为[Li(DME)_3]~+{[(η~5-C_5H_5)Nd(M-Cl)_2Nd(η~5-C_5H_5)](M-Cl)_4(M_4-D)[(η~5-C_5H_5)Nd(M-CH_3)_2Nd(η~5-C_5H_5)]}~(2-)[Li(DME)_3]~+。本文还研究了NdCl_3·2LiCl与2倍摩尔的CH_3C_5H_4Na的四氢呋喃反应液和等摩CH_3Li乙醚溶液于-78 ℃下反应,从中分离得到另一种新的阴离子型配合物[Li(DME)_3][(η~5-CH_3C_5H_4)_3NdCH_3]并对其进行了元素分析,红外光谱的鉴定。我们还研究了配合物[Li(DME)_3][(η~5-CH_3C_5H_4)Nd(t-Bu)_3]对苯乙烯的催化聚合活性,发现它可以单独引发苯乙烯聚合,得无规聚苯乙烯。

Cooler Storage Ring (CSR) of Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) consists of a main ring (CSRm) and an experimental ring (CSRe). Two particular C-type dipoles with embedded windings are used in the injection beam line of CSRm. They also act as the prototype dipoles of CSRe. The windings are designed to improve the field quality by their trimming current. The current impacts on field homogeneity and multipole components are investigated by a hall sensor and a long coil, respectively. The experiment shows that a field homogeneity of +/- 1.0 x 10(-3) can be reached by adjusting the trimming currents, though the multipole components change correspondingly. In our case, the quadrupole component is decreased to a low level with the octupole, decapole and 12-pole ones increased slightly when the trimming current is optimized.

C-type lectins are Ca2+ dependent carbohydrate-recognition proteins that play crucial roles in the invertebrate innate immunity, such as nonself recognition, activation of proPO system, antibacterial activity, promotion of phagocytosis and nodule formation. In this study, a novel C-type lectin of bay scallops Argopecten irradians (Ai Lec) was identified using expressed sequence tag (EST) and RACE techniques. The Ai Lec cDNA encoded a polypeptide of 171 amino acids with a putative signal peptide of 21 amino acid residues and a mature protein of 150 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of Ai Lec was highly similar to those of the C-type lectins from other animals and contained a typical carbohydrate-recognition domain (CRD) of 131 residues, which has four conserved disulfide-bonded cysteine residues that define the CRD and two additional cysteine residues at the amino terminus. The expression of Ai Lec transcript was dominantly detected in the hepatopancreas and slightly detected in the haemocytes of normal scallops. 6 h after Vibrio anguillarum-challenge and 8 h after Micrococcus luteus-challenge, the temporal expression of Ai Lec mRNA in hemocytes was increased by 4.4- and 3.6-folds, respectively. The results suggested that Ai Lec was a constitutive and inducible acute-phase protein and might be involved in immune response to Gram-negative and Gram-positive microbial infection in bay scallop A. irradians.

C-type lectins are Ca2+-dependent carbohydrate-recognition proteins that play crucial roles in innate immunity. The cDNA of C-type lectin (AiCTL1) in the bay scallop Argopecten irradians was cloned by expressed sequence tag (EST) and RACE techniques. The full-length cDNA of AiCTL1 was 660 bp, consisting of a T-terminal. untranslated region (UTR) of 30 bp and a 3' UTR of 132 bp with a polyadenylation signal sequence AATAAA and a poly(A) tail. The AiCTL1 cDNA encoded a polypeptide of 166 amino acids with a putative signal peptide of 20 amino acid residues and a mature protein of 146 amino acids. The deduced amino acid sequence of AiCTL1 was highly similar to those of the C-type lectins from other animals and contained a typical carbohydrate-recognition domain (CRD) of 121 residues, which has four conserved disulfide-bonded cysteine residues that define the CRD and two additional cysteine residues at the amino terminus. AiCTL1 mRNA was dominantly expressed in the hemocytes of the bay scallop. The temporal expression of AiCTL1 mRNA in hemocytes was increased by 5.7-and 4.9-fold at 6 h after injury and 8 h after injection of bacteria, respectively. The structural features, high similarity and expression pattern of AiCTL1 indicate that the gene may be involved in injury heating and the immune response in A. irradians. (c) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of thermal treatment on H-MCM-22 and H-ZSM-5 zeolites was investigated using the electron spin resonance technique. A six-line signal (denoted as A, g = 2.048, A = 22. 15 G) was detected on H-MCM-22 after He purging at high temperatures, whose intensities increased with the treating temperature. The same signal was also found on H-ZSM-5 zeolites with different crystal sizes. The paramagnetic center was identified as a V center, namely, a hole of an electron trapped on an oxygen atom bonding to a nearby aluminum atom. These signals appeared only on a dealuminated sample or a sample concomitantly with dealumination. The formation of the hole might involve an electron transferring from the lattice oxygen to a nonframework aluminum species, and the hyperfine splitting is caused by the interaction between the electron hole locating on the p orbit of oxygen and the framework aluminum bonding with the oxygen. The signal disappeared after the sample was exposed to air or oxygen at room temperature. However, the process was reversible. A new set of signals (denoted as B, g(1) = 2.008, g(2) = 2.003, g(3) = 1.9985) was observed after oxygen adsorption on the H-MCM-22 pretreated with He at 973 K or He purging at 973 K on the H-MCM-22 pretreated with oxygen at 813 K, which was attributed to the O- species.

We present photospheric-phase observations of LSQ12gdj, a slowly declining, UV-bright Type Ia supernova. Classified well before maximum light, LSQ12gdj has extinction-corrected absolute magnitude MB = -19.8, and pre-maximum spectroscopic evolution similar to SN 1991T and the super-Chandrasekhar-mass SN 2007if. We use ultraviolet photometry from Swift, ground-based optical photometry, and corrections from a near-infrared photometric template to construct the bolometric (1600-23 800 Å) light curve out to 45 d past B-band maximum light. We estimate that LSQ12gdj produced 0.96 ± 0.07 M· of 56Ni, with an ejected mass near or slightly above the Chandrasekhar mass. As much as 27 per cent of the flux at the earliest observed phases, and 17 per cent at maximum light, is emitted bluewards of 3300 Å. The absence of excess luminosity at late times, the cutoff of the spectral energy distribution bluewards of 3000 Å and the absence of narrow line emission and strong Na I D absorption all argue against a significant contribution from ongoing shock interaction. However, ~10 per cent of LSQ12gdj's luminosity near maximum light could be produced by the release of trapped radiation, including kinetic energy thermalized during a brief interaction with a compact, hydrogen-poor envelope (radius <1013 cm) shortly after explosion; such an envelope arises generically in double-degenerate merger scenarios.
