The influence of guar and xanthan gum and their combined use on dough proofing rate and its calorimetric properties was investigated. Fusion enthalpy, which is related to the amount of frozen water, was influenced by frozen dough formulation and storage time; specifically gum addition reduced the fusion enthalpy in comparison to control formulation, 76.9 J/g for formulation with both gums and 81.2 J/g for control, at 28th day. Other calorimetric parameters, such as T(g) and freezable water amount, were also influenced by frozen storage time. For all formulations, proofing rate of dough after freezing, frozen storage time and thawing, decreased in comparison to non-frozen dough, indicating that the freezing process itself was more detrimental to the proofing rate than storage time. For all formulations, the mean value of proofing rate was 2.97 +/- 0.24 cm(3) min(-1) per 100 g of non-frozen dough and 2.22 +/- 0.12 cm(3) min(-1) per 100 g of frozen dough. Also the proofing rate of non-frozen dough with xanthan gum decreased significantly in relation to dough without gums and dough with only guar gum. Optical microscopy analyses showed that the gas cell production after frozen storage period was reduced, which is in agreement with the proofing rate results. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Some years ago, a parish in Geneva decided to reduce heating costs by insulating its church to make it more energy efficient. Three years after the last renovations, it was observed that the internal surfaces of the naves had already become dusty compared with the customary frequency of 10-12 years. Dust even deposited on various surfaces during religious services. Our investigation showed that nearly all the dust found inside the church may in fact be soot from incense and candle combustion. Incense appears to be a significant source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. With a mechanical ventilation system and petrol lamps resembling candles the problem can be resolved.

Evolutionary theory may contribute to practical solutions for control of disease by identifying interventions that may cause pathogens to evolve to reduced virulence. Theory predicts, for example, that pathogens transmitted by water or arthropod vectors should evolve to relatively high levels of virulence because such pathogens can gain the evolutionary benefits of relatively high levels of host exploitation while paying little price from host illness. The entrance of Vibrio cholerae into South America in 1991 has generated a natural experiment that allows testing of this idea by determining whether geographic and temporal variations in toxigenicity correspond to variation in the potential for waterborne transmission. Preliminary studies show such correspondences: toxigenicity is negatively associated with access to uncontaminated water in Brazil; and in Chile, where the potential for waterborne transmission is particularly low, toxigenicity of strains declined between 1991 and 1998. In theory vector-proofing of houses should be similarly associated with benignity of vectorborne pathogens, such as the agents of dengue, malaria, and Chagas' disease. These preliminary studies draw attention to the need for definitive prospective experiments to determine whether interventions such as provisioning of uncontaminated water and vector-proofing of houses cause evolutionary reductions in virulence

A survey was undertaken among Swiss occupational health and safety specialists in 2004 to identify uses, difficulties, and possible developments of exposure models. Occupational hygienists (121), occupational physicians (169), and safety specialists (95) were surveyed with an in depth questionnaire. Results obtained indicate that models are not used very much in practice in Switzerland and are reserved to research groups focusing on specific topics. However, various determinants of exposure are often considered important by professionals (emission rate, work activity), and in some cases recorded and used (room parameters, operator activity). These parameters cannot be directly included in present models. Nevertheless, more than half of the occupational hygienists think that it is important to develop quantitative exposure models. Looking at research institutions, there is, however, a big interest in the use of models to solve problems which are difficult to address with direct measurements; i. e. retrospective exposure assessment for specific clinical cases and prospective evaluation for new situations or estimation of the effect of selected parameters. In a recent study about cases of acutepulmonary toxicity following water proofing spray exposure, exposure models have been used to reconstruct exposure of a group of patients. Finally, in the context of exposure prediction, it is also important to report about a measurement database existing in Switzerland since 1991. [Authors]

Producing high quality products and services is one of the key concerns in order to keep up with the competition in the global markets. Companies are putting a great effort on preventing customers having faulty products and services by any means. However, the total elimination of mistakes in manufacturing processes has always been a great challenge for quality management. In this thesis the applicability of poka-yoke methodology in reducing the number of quality failures in the case company has been studied. Poka-yoke stands for the mistake-proofing and is mainly developed for the purpose of eliminating human errors in manufacturing processes. Inspection techniques; judgment, informative and source inspection are in the core of this methodology. Mass customization and large configurability of products leads to situation where the root causes of quality problems may vary a lot. To study the effects of these factors extensive analysis of quality failures was conducted. Recommendations and proposals for further actions regarding problem solving processes and utilization of mistake-proofing methods were provided on the basis of the analysis.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan hevoskauppaa ja sen erityispiirteitä suhtees-sa irtaimen kauppaa säätelevään lainsäädäntöön. Tavoitteena on tuoda esiin hevosesta johtuvia erityispiirteitä ja pohtia sovellettavan lainsäädän-nön soveltuvuutta hevosen kauppaan. Tarkastelu kohdentuu erityisesti hevoselle ominaisiin laatuvirheen muotoihin, kuten sairauksiin ja fyysisiin vikoihin. Lisäksi tarkastellaan, miten esiin nostettuihin erityispiirteisiin on varauduttu hevoskauppaan tarkoitetuissa kauppasopimusmalleissa. Hevoskauppaan pätee sama lainsäädäntö kuin minkä tahansa muun ir-taimen tavaran kauppaan. Virheeseen varautuminen yksityiskohtaisesti sopimalla korostuu hevoskaupassa, koska täydellistä ja virheetöntä hevosta ei ole olemassakaan. Myyjän näkökulmasta onnistuneessa kauppaprosessissa neuvotellaan virheen mahdollisuus niin pieneksi kuin se on mahdollista. Tähän instrumentit antavat lainsäädäntö ja erityisesti sopimusoikeudelliset keinot. Ostajan näkökulmasta onnistuneessa kaupassa hän on kyennyt asiantuntijoihin tukeutuen tunnistamaan ennalta hevosen viat ja muut epämieluisat ominaisuudet. Nämä tiedostaen ostaja määrittää, mitä virheitä on valmis hyväksymään. Hevoskaupassa riidan välittömät ja välilliset kustannukset suhteessa maksettuun kauppahintaan voivat nousta korkeiksi. Hevoskaupassa usein ainoa kirjallinen dokumentti on omistajanvaihdosilmoitus, eikä kauppasopimuksen laatiminen kirjallisena ole itsestäänselvyys. Yksinomaan hevoskauppaan liittyvien juridisten kysymysten tekeminen näkyväksi on tärkeää. Irtaimen kauppaa säätelevä lainsäädäntö ei kuitenkaan tunnista riittävällä tarkkuudella hevosen erityispiirteitä persoonaesineenä, vaan väliin tarvi-taan vakiosopimusten kaltaisia apuvälineitä kaupan osapuolten tueksi.
