Welfare Maximizing Contest Success Functions when the Planner Cannot Commit

We analyze how a contest organizer chooses optimally the winner when the contestants' efforts are already exerted and commitment to the use of a given contest success function is not possible. We de…ne the notion of rationalizability in mixed-strategies to capture such a situation. Our approach allows to derive different contest success functions depending on the aims and attitudes of the decider. We derive contest success functions which are closely related to commonly used functions providing new support for them. By taking into account social welfare considerations our approach bridges the contest literature and the recent literature on political economy. Computing infinite plans for LTL goals using a classical planner

Classical planning has been notably successful in synthesizing finite plans to achieve states where propositional goals hold. In the last few years, classical planning has also been extended to incorporate temporally extended goals, expressed in temporal logics such as LTL, to impose restrictions on the state sequences generated by finite plans. In this work, we take the next step and consider the computation of infinite plans for achieving arbitrary LTL goals. We show that infinite plans can also be obtained efficiently by calling a classical planner once over a classical planning encoding that represents and extends the composition of the planningdomain and the B¨uchi automaton representingthe goal. This compilation scheme has been implemented and a number of experiments are reported.

mGPT: a probabilistic planner based on heuristic search

We describe the version of the GPT planner to be used in the planning competition. This version, called mGPT, solves mdps specified in the ppddllanguage by extracting and using different classes of lower bounds, along with various heuristic-search algorithms. The lower bounds are extracted from deterministic relaxations of the mdp where alternativeprobabilistic effects of an action are mapped into different, independent, deterministic actions. The heuristic-search algorithms, on the other hand, use these lower bounds for focusing the updates and delivering a consistent value function over all states reachable from the initial state with the greedy policy.

Day Planner - 1984 (select dates)

One page from the 1984 daily planner of Donald Ziraldo, October 18, 1984, the page is filled with point form notes regarding GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade). One note reads "don't understand how serious". The second date from the planner is October 27th and the notes appear to be expressions/thoughts like "society wants self-gov't" and "Realities = Crossroads in the Labrynth"

Day Planner - 2002 (select months)

Donald Ziraldo's day planner for July and August with another page devoted to "future appointments". The few pages illustrate the numerous travel plans associated with his business. The months of July and August show planned trips to places like: Singapore, Taiwan, Milan etc.

Ivory Victorian Day Planner

The planner has an ivory cover and 6 celluloid pages which fan out. The days of the week were stamped on each page, except Sunday. In this case, the days of the week are faded away and someone has rewritten them and included Sunday on the back cover. The front cover has a metal escutcheon engraved with the letter C and it closes with a metal latch. The front ivory cover is cracked down the middle and the front page is also cracked. R. Band has written on the “Monday” page that this belonged to Dr. Cleveland, this note is dated June 6, 2004. The “Tuesday” page has the title “Julia’s house” and gives the numbers of doors, lights, windows and water closets etc. within the house. On the back of the “Friday” page is the number 4784 and on the back of the Saturday page is the name and address of Dr. Mafarlan [?] of Pennsylvania.

Sistema multimodal para la planificación de viajes en transportes públicos de código abierto y basado en estándares 'de facto' = A multimodal journey planner based on open source software and 'de facto' standards

Este artículo muestra cómo con bajo coste y riesgo se puede desarrollar un sistema de planificación de viaje multimodal, basado en un enfoque de código abierto y estándares ‘de facto’. Se ha desarrollado completamente una solución de código abierto para un sistema de información de transporte público puerta a puerta basado en estándares ‘de facto’. El cálculo de rutas se realiza mediante Graphserver, mientras que la cartografía se basa en OpenStreetMap. También se ha demostrado cómo exportar una base de datos real de horarios de transporte público como la del operador ETM (Empresa de Transporte Metropolitano de València) a la especificación de Google Transit, para permitir el cálculo de rutas, tanto desde nuestro prototipo como desde Google Transit

Inflation when the planner wants less spending

I study optima in a random-matching model of outside money. The examples in this paper show a conflict between private and collective interests. While the planner worry about the extensive and intensive margin effects of trades in a steady state, people want the exhaust the gains from trades immediately, i.e., once in a meeting, consumers prefer spend more for a better output than take the risk of saving money and wait for good meetings in the future. Thus, the conflict can force the planner to choose allocations with a more disperse money distribution, mainly if people are im- patient. When the patient rate is low enough, the planner uses a expansionary policy to generate a better distribution of money for future trades.
