The reaction pathways by which oxygen is incorporated into the substrate in the photocatalytic oxidation of terephthalic acid (TPTA) are vastly different on {001} and {101} facets of an anatase single crystal. This was established by controlling the percentage of {101} and {001} facets, isotopically tracing the origins of the hydroxy group, and studying dioxygen consumption and variance in the concentration of hydroxylation intermediate.

This work aims to understand the influence of TiO2 surface structure in Au/TiO2 catalysts on CO oxidation. Au nanoparticles (3 wt%) in the range of 4 to 8 nm were loaded onto four kinds of TiO2 surfaces, which had different surface structures and were synthesized by calcining hydrogen titanate nanotubes at various temperatures and in different atmospheres. The Au catalyst supported on anatase nanorods exhibited the highest activity in CO oxidation at 30 °C among all the five Au/TiO2 catalysts including the reference catalyst of Au/TiO2-P25. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared emission spectra (IES) results indicate that the anatase nanorods have the most active surface on which water molecules can be strongly adsorbed and OH groups can be formed readily. Theoretical calculation indicates that the surface OH can facilitate the O2 adsorption on the anatase surface. Such active surface features are conducive to the O2 activation and CO oxidation

The role of Bronsted acidity of titanium silicalite zeolite (with different ratios of Si/Ti) in oxidation reactions of styrene has been investigated and discussed. For zeolites with Si/Ti > 42, most of the titanium is in the zeolite framework. These framework titanium species, which act both as the isolated titanium centers and as Bronsted acidity centers (together with the Bronsted acidity produced by the tetrahedral aluminum impurity introduced during synthesis), can catalyze both the epoxidation and the succeeding rearrangement reactions, thus promoting the formation of phenylacetaldehyde. With an increase in the titanium content of the zeolite, titanium will tend to stay outside the zeolite lattice, except for the TiOx nanophases which can be occluded in the zeolite channels or on the external surface. These non-framework titanium species are favorable for the carbon-carbon bond scission, leading to the production of additional benzaldehyde. The catalytic performances of these zeolites with different Si/Ti ratios are correlated here with their structural information by using solid-state NMR and UV-Vis methods. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Catalytic oxidation reaction monitoring has been performed for the first time with a trace gas carbon dioxide analyser based on a continuous wave (cw), thermoelectrically cooled (TEC), distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade laser (QCL) operating at around 2307 cm-1. The reaction kinetics for carbon monoxide oxidation over a platinum catalyst supported on yttria-stabilised zirconia were followed by the QCL CO2 analyser and showed that it is a powerful new tool for measuring low reaction rates associated with low surface area model catalysts operating at atmospheric pressures. A detection limit was determined of 40 ppb (1 standard deviation) for a 0.1 s average and a residual absorption standard deviation of 1.9×10-4. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The semiconductor photocatalysed (SPC) oxidation of toluene is performed inside an NMR spectrometer and the reaction monitored simultaneously in-situ, using a fibre optic probe/diffuser to provide the UV light to activate the titania photocatalyst coating on the inside of the NMR tube. Such a system has great potential for the simple rapid screening of a wide range of SPC mediated organic reactions.

Although Pt has been thoroughly studied regarding its activity for the borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR), the BOR mechanism at Pt remains unclear: Depending on the applied potential, spontaneous BH(4)(-) hydrolysis can compete with the direct BOR. The goal of the present work is to provide more insight into the behavior of smooth Pt electrodes toward the BOR, by coupling in situ infrared reflectance spectroscopy with electrochemistry. The measurements were performed on a Pt electrode in 1 M NaOH/1 M NaBH(4), so as to detect the reaction intermediate species generated as a function of the applied potential. Several bands were monitored in the B-H ((v) over bar approximate to 1180, 1080, and 972 cm(-1)) and B-O ((v) over bar = 1325 and similar to 1425 cm(-1)) bond regions upon increased electrode polarization. These absorption bands, which appear sequentially and were already detected for similar measurements on Au electrodes, are assigned to BH(3), BH(2), and BO(2)(-) species. In light of these experimental data and previous results obtained in our group for Pt- or Au-based electrodes, possible initial elementary steps of the BOR on platinum electrodes are proposed and discussed according to the relevant literature data.

The borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) was studied on Pt and Au electrodes by cyclic voltammetry in dilute alkaline borohydride solutions (0.1 M NaOH + 10(-3) mol L(-1) NaBH(4)). More specifically, the electrodes were considered as either Vulcan XC72-supported Pt or Au (noted as Pt/C and Au/C, respectively) active layers or smooth Pt or Au surfaces, the latter possibly being covered by a layer of (non-metalized) Vulcan XC72 carbon powder. The BOR onset potential and the number of electrons (n(e-)) exchanged per BH(4)(-) anion (faradaic efficiency) were investigated for these electrodes, to determine whether the residence time of reaction intermediates (at the electrode surface or inside the porous layer) does influence the overall reaction pathway/completion. For the carbon-supported platinum, n(e-) strongly depends on the thickness of the active layer. While thin (ca. 0.5 mu m-thick) Pt/C active layers yield n(e-) < 4, thick layers (approximately 3 mu m) yield n(e-)approximate to 8, which can be ascribed to the sufficient residence time of the molecules formed within the active layer (H(2), by heterogeneous hydrolysis, or BOR intermediates) enabling further (near-complete) oxidation. This puts into evidence that not only the nature of the electrocatalyst is important to reach high BOR efficiency, but also the structure/thickness of the active layer. The same trend applies for Au/C active layers and for smooth Pt or Au surfaces covered with a layer of (inactive) Vulcan XC72. In addition, the BOR onset usually shifts negative when the reaction intermediates are trapped, which suggests that some of the intermediates are more easily oxidized than BH(4)(-) itself; based on literature data, BH(3)OH(-) species is a likely candidate. This paper presents a study of the electrocatalysis of ethanol oxidation reactions in an acidic medium on Pt-CeO(2)/C (20 wt.% of Pt-CeO(2) on carbon XC-72R), prepared in different mass ratios by the polymeric precursor method. The mass ratios between Pt and CeO(2) (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDAX). X-ray diffraction (XRD) structural characterization data shows that the Pt-CeO(2)/C catalysts are composed of nanosized polycrystalline non-alloyed deposits, from which reflections corresponding to the fcc (Pt) and fluorite (CeO(2)) structures were clearly observed. The mean crystallite sizes calculated from XRD data revealed that, independent of the mass ratio, a value close to 3 nm was obtained for the CeO(2) particles. For Pt, the mean crystallite sizes were dependent on the ratio of this metal in the catalysts. Low platinum ratios resulted in small crystallites. and high Pt proportions resulted in larger crystallites. The size distributions of the catalysts particles, determined by XRD, were confirmed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) imaging. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometic experiments were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of the different materials. In all cases, except Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:1, the Pt-Ceo(2)/C catalysts exhibited improved performance when compared with Pt/C. The best result was obtained for the Pt-CeO(2)/C 1:3 catalyst, which gave better results than the Pt-Ru/C (Etek) catalyst. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In situ solid state oxidation reaction for an alternative La1-xSrxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) formation is reported. Samples have been obtained by using strontium peroxide, lanthanum and manganese (III) oxide reagents. Strontium peroxide has induced the oxidation of Mn+3 to Mn+4. Lanthanum strontium-doped manganite was obtained without secondary phase formation. La0.825Sr0.175MnO3 showed two structural transitions. The first from 88 to 373 K and the second at 1073 K. which are explained by Jahn-Teller effect at low temperature and cation displacement at high temperature. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. In this paper we report a simple and environmentally friendly synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNps) and their electrocatalytic activity for borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR). Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV- vis) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the formation of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)protected colloidal AuNps through direct reduction of Au3+ by glycerol in alkaline medium at room temperature. For the BOR tests the AuNps were directly produced onto carbon to yield the Au/C catalyst. Levich plots revealed that the process occured via 7.2 electrons, therefore near the theoretical value of 8 electrons. When compared to bulk Au, the gold nanoparticles presented enhanced catalytic properties since the onset potential for BOR was shifted 200 mV towards negative potentials. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. This work describes the study of the ethanol oxidation reaction of a Pt/C Etek electrocatalyst that was supported on different substrates, such as gold, glassy carbon and carbon cloth treated with PTFE. In the ethanol oxidation reaction, the activity varies with the substrate, as well as the pathways for ethanol oxidation, as studied by an ATR-FTIR in situ setup using the carbon cloth as the electrocatalyst support. The electrocatalyst Pt/C supported on gold starts acetaldehyde production from ethanol oxidation at an onset potential of 0.1 V less than that observed for the same process on Teflon-treated carbon cloth. The Pt/C supported on the carbon cloth starts its CO2 production for the same oxidation process at 0.2 V less than on the Pt/C supported on gold substrate. The differences in catalytic activity for the ethanol oxidation reaction depend not only on the electrocatalyst but also on various electrode factors, such as the substrate, the roughness of the electrode and the charge transfer resistance.

The CuO/CeO2 system was investigated as a catalyst for preferential CO oxidation reaction in hydrogen-rich feed (PROX-CO). The catalysts were prepared by deposition-precipitation (DEP) and co-precipitation (COP) methods and the catalytic performance reveals that the preparation method influences the properties of solids prepared, where a direct consequence is the difference in behavior of the catalysts in the PROX-CO reaction. A high specific area and a better dispersion of the metallic phase were obtained in the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation. The redox properties during the reaction were reported by measures of temperature programmed reduction (TPR), OSC measurements and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES-TPR) in situ showed the relationship between the preparation method, the physicochemical characteristics and redox properties in the PROX-CO reaction. By this means, the good dispersion of CuO and the best oxygen capacity are the response of the high performance of CuO/CeO2-COP catalysts for the PROX-CO reaction.
