Pure and niobium doped bismuth titanate ceramics (Bi4Ti3-xNbxO12 (BTN)), with x ranging from 0 to 0.4 were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction showed no secondary phases. Increasing niobium content leads to more resistive ceramics. The shape and size of the grains are strongly influenced by the niobiurn added to the system. The dielectric constant is not influenced by the niobium addition while hysteresis loops are significantly narrowed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are glass and polymer composite materials. These materials currently find use in the dental field. The purpose of this work is to obtain systems based on composition 4.5SiO(2)-3Al(2)O(3)-XNb2O5-2CaO to be used in Dentistry. The systems were prepared by chemical route at 700 degrees C. The results obtained by XRD and DTA showed that all systems prepared are glasses. The structures of the obtained glasses were compared to commercial material using Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR. The analysis of MAS NMR spectra indicated that the systems developed and commercial material are formed by SiO4 and AlO4 linked tetrahedra. The properties of glass ionomer cements based on the glasses prepared with several niobium contents were studied. Setting and working times of the cement pastes, microhardness and diametral tensile strength were evaluated for the experimental GICs and commercial luting cements. It was concluded that setting time of the cement pastes increased with increasing niobium content of the glasses (X). The properties to the GICs such as setting time and microhardness were influenced by niobium content. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The optimal combination of the mechanical characteristics of austempered spheroidal graphitic cast steel together with modern casting techniques yielded an economically promising product. The maximum potential of the usage of these steels is related to fabrication and characterization techniques, among which, one of the most important is the cooling diagram (TTT curve). In this work, 3 heats of graphitic steels with the following nominal compositions were cast: 1.0 % C, 2.3 % Si, 0.4 % Mn, and with niobium contents of. 0.0 %, 0.5 % and 1.0 %. TTT curves were determined by dilatometric testing and test specimens of these steels were austempered. The samples were then characterized by hardness testing and optical and SEM microscopy. Tensile, impact (no notch) and wear testing were also performed. The addition of niobium produced significant alterations in the TTT diagrams. Increasing niobium content moves the pearlite transformation nose to the right and the bainitic transformation nose to the left. Tensile strength of these alloys was high, in the range of 1700 MPa and impact values were around of 45 Joules for alloy with 1 % Nb, 49 Joules for alloy with 0.5 % Nb and fracture did not occur for the alloy without the addition of Nb.

This paper reports on the sol-gel preparation and structural and optical characterization of new Er3+-doped SiO2-Nb 2O5 nanocomposite planar waveguides. Erbium-doped (100-x)SiO2-xNb2O5 waveguides were deposited on silica-on-silicon substrates and Si(1 0 0) by the dip-coating technique. The waveguides exhibited uniform refractive index distribution across the thickness, efficient light injection at 1538 nm, and low losses at 632 and 1538 nm. The band-gap values lied between 4.12 eV and 3.55 eV for W1-W5, respectively, showing an excellent transparency in the visible and near infrared region for the waveguides. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy analysis evidenced SiO2-Nb2O5 nanocomposite formation with controlled phase separation in the films. The HRTEM and XRD analyses revealed Nb2O5 orthorhombic T-phase nanocrystals dispersed in a silica-based host. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis showed a broad band emission at 1531 nm, assigned to the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition of the Er3+ ions present in the nanocomposite, with a full-width at half medium of 48-68 nm, depending on the niobium content and annealing. Hence, these waveguides are excellent candidates for application in integrated optics, especially in EDWA and WDM devices. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials can be prepared dispersing organic species into well-defined inorganic nanoblocks. This paper describes the immobilization of natural dyes from the extract of the Brazilian acai-fruit into two types of layered hexaniobate precursors derived from H(2)K(2)Nb(6)O(17): (i) colloidal dispersion of niobate exfoliated nanoparticles and (ii) niobate pre-intercalated with tetraethylammonium cations (TEA(+)). The restacking of exfoliated particles in the presence of acai anthocyanins promotes their intercalation and produces stacked layers showing large basal spacing (ca. 50 angstrom). The TEA(+) pre-intercalated niobate provides particles with lower content of dye species than the exfoliated precursor but with higher degree of organization and regularity according to X-ray diffraction data and images obtained by electron microscopies. Vibrational (FTIR and Raman) and (13)C NMR spectroscopies indicate the presence of flavylium cations in the hybrid materials and spectral profiles characteristic of glycosylated anthocyanidins. According to thermal analysis results, the purplish hybrids materials are more stable than the free acai-dyes. One hybrid sample was heated under air up to 170 degrees C and maintained at this temperature for 240 min. No weight loss events were observed and the sample retained its original color, indicating that the intercalation of anthocyanin into hexaniobate increases its thermal stability. Considering the structural, chemical, optical and thermal properties of the synthesized hybrid materials, they might be good candidates to be investigated for future specialized applications.

The electrodeposition of nickel based composites is been performed in order to improve properties of nickel layers, such as hardness, wear resistance, lubrication, corrosion resistance and catalytic activity. In the present work Nb powders (20 mu m average size) and Ni were codeposited on 1020 carbon steel by galvanostatic electrolysis of Watts bath, using 10, 20 and 40 mA/cm(2) cathodic current density and 240, 400 and 550 rpm electrolyte stirring rate. The morphology and texture of the coatings, Nb incorporated volume fraction, microhardness, adhesion to the substrate and corrosion behavior were evaluated. The Ni-Nb composite layers presented a rough morphology with randomly oriented Ni grains, whereas pure Ni coatings were smooth and showed highly preferred orientation in the [110] or [100] direction. The volume fraction of Nb in the composites determined by image analysis ranged from 8.5 to 19%. The 400 rpm stirring rate led to the highest Nb content (16 to 19016) for all current densities investigated The microhardness of the composite layers was higher than that of pure Ni coatings due to refining of Ni grains induced by incoporation of Nb particles. The adhesion of the coatings estimated qualitatively by bend test was found satisfactory. The Ni-Nb composites presented lower corrosion rate than Ni coatings in both 3% NaCl and 20% H2SO4 solutions.

The present work concerns a new synthesis approach to prepare niobium based SAPO materials with AEL structure and the characterization ofNb species incorporated within the inorganic matrixes. The SAPO-11 materials were synthesized with or without the help of a small amine, methylamine (MA) as co-template, while Nb was added directly during the preparation of the initial gel. Structural, textural and acidic properties of the different supports were evaluated by XRD, TPR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, pyridine adsorption followed by IR spectroscopy and thermal analyses. Pure and well crystalline Nb based SAPO-11 materials were obtained, either with or without MA, using in the initial gel a low Si content of about 0.6. Increasing the Si content of the gel up to 0.9 led to an important decrease of the samples crystallinity. Niobium was found to incorporate the AEL pores support as small Nb2O5 oxide particles and also as extra framework cationic species (Nb5+), compensating the negative charges from the matrix and generating new Lewis acid sites. A series of vanadium-niobium oxide catalysts in which the vanadia content varies between 0.3 and 18mol%was prepared by coprecipitation. These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy ion scattering (LEIS), and by catalytic testing in the oxidative dehydrogenation reaction of propane. The results of the surface analysis by XPS and LEIS are compared. It is concluded that the active site on the catalyst surface contains 2.0 ± 0.3 vanadium atoms on average. This can be understood byassuming the existenceof two or three different sites:isolated vanadium atoms, pairs of vanadium atoms, or ensembles of three vanadium atoms. At higher vanadium concentration more vanadium clusters with a higher activity are at the surface.LEIS revealed that as the vanadium concentration in the catalyst increases, vanadium replaces niobium at the surface. At vanadium concentrations above 8 mol%, new phases such as P-(Nb, V)20S which are less active because vanadium is present in isolated sites are formed, while the vanadium surface concentration shows a slight decrease

Nanocrystalline FeCuNbSiB alloys obtained from the partial crystallization of amorphous alloys have attracted technological attention due to their excellent magnetic properties, but the relationship between corrosion resistance and magnetic properties is not well established. The influence of Nb as an alloying element and effect of partial crystallization on the corrosion resistance of Fe73.5Si13.5B10Cu1, Fe73.5Si13.5B7Nb3Cu1 and Fe73.5Si13.5B5Nb5Cu1 amorphous alloys were studied and the effect of corrosion on magnetization saturation flux density, B-s, was investigated. The addition of niobium on amorphous alloys increases the corrosion resistance. The raise of Nb content from 3 to 5% increases the corrosion resistance also. A partial crystallization increases the corrosion resistance of the samples with Nb. However, in the samples without Nb, the partial crystallization diminishes the corrosion resistance. The values of B-s depend on the alloy corrosion resistance.) (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.
