The results of theoretical investigations of two-channel waveguide modulator based on Surface Wave (SW) propagation are presented. The structure studied consists of two n-type semiconductor waveguide channels separated from each other by a dielectric gap and coated by a metal. The SW propagates at the semiconductor-metal interface across an external magnetic field which is parallel to the interface. An external dc voltage is applied to the metal surface of one channel to provide a small phase shift between two propagating modes. In a coupled mode approximation, two possible regimes of operation of the structure, namely as a directional coupler and as an electro-optical modulator, are considered. Our results suggest new applications in millimeter and submillimeter wave solid-state electronics and integrated optics.

Bit-Stream based control, which uses one bit wide signals to control power electronics applications, is a new approach for controller design in power electronic systems. Bit-Stream signals are inherently high frequency in nature, and as such some form of down sampling or modulating is essential to avoid excessive switching losses. This paper presents a novel three-phase space vector modulator, which is based on the Bit-Stream technique and suitable for standard three-phase inverter systems. The proposed modulator simultaneously converts a two phase reference to the three-phase domain and reduces switching frequencies to reasonable levels. The modulator consumes relatively few logic elements and does not require sector detectors, carrier oscillators or trigonometric functions. The performance of the modulator was evaluated using ModelSim. Results indicate that, subject to limits on the modulation index, the proposed modulator delivers a spread-spectrum output with total harmonic distortion comparable to standard space vector pulse width modulation techniques.

This paper presents a new algorithm for the step-size change of instantaneous adaptive delta modulator. The present strategy is such that the step-size at any sampling instant can increase or decrease by either of the two constant factors or can remain the same, depending upon the combination of three or four most recent output bits. The quantizer has been simulated on a digital computer, and its performance compared with other quantizers. The figure of merit used is the SNR with gaussian signals as the input. The results indicate that the new design can give an improved SNR over a wider dynamic range and fast response to step inputs, as compared to the earlier systems.

A novel comparator architecture is proposed for speed operation in low voltage environment. Performance comparison with a conventional regenerative comparator shows a speed-up of 41%. The proposed comparator is embedded in a continuous time sigma-delta ADC so as to reduce the quantizer delay and hence minimizes the excess loop delay problem. A performance enhancement of 1dB in the dynamic range of the ADC is achieved with this new comparator. We have implemented this ADC in a standard single-poly 8-Metal 0.13 mum UMC process. The entire system operates at 1.2 V supply providing a dynamic range of 32 dB consuming 720 muW of power and occupies an area of 0.1 mm2.

We have demonstrated novel concept of utilizing the photomechanical actuation in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to tune and reversibly switch the Bragg wavelength. When fiber Bragg grating coated with CNTs (CNT-FBG) is exposed externally to a wide range of optical wavelengths, e. g., ultraviolet to infrared (0.2-200 mu m), a strain is induced in the CNTs which alters the grating pitch and refractive index in the CNT-FBG system resulting in a shift in the Bragg wavelength. This novel approach will find applications in telecommunication, sensors and actuators, and also for real time monitoring of the photomechanical actuation in nanoscale materials. Quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) is one of the most popular modulation schemes in coherent optical communication systems for data rates in excess of 40 Gbps because of its high spectral efficiency. This paper proposes a simple method of implementing a QPSK modulator in integrated optic (IO) domain. The QPSK modulator is realized using standard IO components, such as Y-branches and electro-optic modulators (EOMs). Design optimization of EOM is carried out considering the fabrication constraints, miniaturization aspects, and simplicity. Also, the interdependency between electrode length, operating voltage, and electrode gap of an EOM has been captured in the form of a family of curves. These plots enable designing of EOMs for custom requirements. An innovative approach has been adopted in demonstrating the operation of IO QPSK modulator in terms of phase data extracted from beam propagation model. The results obtained by this approach have been verified using the conventional interferometric approach. The operation of the proposed IO QPSK modulator is experimentally demonstrated. The design of IO QPSK modulator is taken up as a part of a broader scheme that aims at generation of QPSK modulated microwave signal based on optical heterodyning. We report on the resonant frequency modulation of inertial microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) structures due to squeeze film stiffness over a range of working pressures. Squeeze film effects have been studied extensively, but mostly in the context of damping and Q-factor determination of dynamic MEMS structures, typically suspended over a fixed substrate with a very thin air gap. Here, we show with experimental measurements and analytical calculations how the pressure-dependent air springs (squeeze film stiffness) change the resonant frequency of an inertial MEMS structure by as much as five times. For capturing the isolated effect of the squeeze film stiffness, we first determine the static stiffness of our structure with atomic force microscope probing and then study the effect of the air spring by measuring the dynamic response of the structure, thus finding the resonant frequencies while varying the air pressure from 1 to 905 mbar. We also verify our results by analytical and Finite Element Method calculations. Our findings show that the pressure-dependent squeeze film stiffness can affect a rather huge range of frequency modulation (>400%) and, therefore, can be used as a design parameter for exploiting this effect in MEMS devices. 2014-0310]

Increasing the field of view of a holographic display while maintaining adequate image size is a difficult task. To address this problem, we designed a system that tessellates several sub-holograms into one large hologram at the output. The sub-holograms we generate is similar to a kinoform but without the paraxial approximation during computation. The sub-holograms are loaded onto a single spatial light modulator consecutively and relayed to the appropriate position at the output through a combination of optics and scanning reconstruction light. We will review the method of computer generated hologram and describe the working principles of our system. Results from our proof-of-concept system are shown to have an improved field of view and reconstructed image size. ©2009 IEEE.
