Ao estudar os romances policiais mais vendidos no Brasil entre 2000 e 2007, Fernanda Massi constatou um grande distanciamento entre esses textos e os romances policiais tradicionais. Nos livros escritos por autores clássicos como Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle e Georges Simenon, há algumas características recorrentes: um crime de autoria desconhecida, um criminoso com motivos para assassinar e um detetive encarregado de encontrar a identidade do criminoso e entregá-lo à polícia para que receba a merecida punição. Nesta obra, Massi nota que autores contemporâneos como Rubem Fonseca, Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza e Dan Brown, entre outros, mantêm a tríade criminoso-vítima-detetive, pois ela é indispensável ao enredo. Mas utilizam o núcleo do romance policial para abordar outros temas, como adultério, corrupção em órgãos públicos, segredos de fundo religioso ou deterioração familiar. Assim, segundo a autora, esses escritores escrevem com uma liberdade característica da pós-modernidade: desenvolvem a narrativa seguindo o modelo fixo de estrutura do gênero policial, porém de modo vivo e adaptado à contemporaneidade, inclusive no que concerne aos valores morais. O diagnóstico alcançado lança nova luz sobre o cenário contemporâneo da literatura policial.

Este estudo, tem como objetivo, a tentativa de estabelecimento dos determinantes históricos relacionados à emergência da noção de personalidade em psicologia. Deste modo, no que se refere à metodologia, colocamo-nos em referência a uma analise histórica centrada nas condições de emergência do saber, ou seja, uma analise dos determinantes sócio-ideológicos atuantes na constituição da psicologia da personalidade. Assim, nosso estudo pode ser delimitado como a tentativa de articular as relações entre produtos e lugares de produção. O trabalho, foi dividido em, basicamente, duas partes. A primeira, corresponde a uma abordagem antropológica, que tem como objetivo central, a desnaturalização das questões relativas à personalidade como categorias humanas inatas. Nesta perspectiva, as condutas individuais, para terem seu sentido apreendido, devem ser remetidas a uma rede de relações simbólicas, a uma estrutura propriamente sociológica. A segunda parte, abordagem propriamente histórica objetiva buscar nas ideias e doutrinas ocidentais, as bases de elaboração do conceito de personalidade, no século XIX, relacionado à individualidade e à interioridade. Em suma, podemos indicar nosso objetivo como a tentativa de demonstração da articulação passada de uma realidade histórica atual, mostrando suas condições de produção e seus efeitos de controle, que necessariamente irão atuar sobre o corpo dos elementos integrantes da sociedade.

Este trabalho se propõe como uma análise histórica da questão da subjetividade tal como ela foi pensada desde sua emergência com Descartes, até Freud. Não se trata propriamente da história de um conceito, mas de uma abordagem histórica a um espaço mais amplo de questões que tem como referencial o sujeito e a subjetividade. O texto está dividido em três partes. Na Parte I, é analisada a emergência da subjetividade como objeto do saber e o esforço do racionalismo para identificá-la com a razão. A Parte 11, é dedicada à abordagem empirista e seus desdobramentos psicológicos. A Parte III é toda ela ocupada pela questão da clivagem da subjetividade operada pela teoria psicanalítica. O objetivo mais imediato do trabalho, é o de confrontar as virias concepções da subjetividade considerada como una e identificada com a consciência, ã concepção que nos é oferecida por Freud e que implica numa subjetividade clivada e num descentramento da razão. Face a este objetivo, a divisão do trabalho em suas duas partes iniciais, não se oferece como rigorosa mas visa apenas uma maior comodidade expositiva. O objetivo mais amplo do trabalho é, no entanto a delimitação da questão do platonismo que serve de tessitura ao conjunto dos discursos que compõem o texto, inclusive ao discurso psicanalítico.

With the rapid growth of databases of various types (text, multimedia, etc..), There exist a need to propose methods for ordering, access and retrieve data in a simple and fast way. The images databases, in addition to these needs, require a representation of the images so that the semantic content characteristics are considered. Accordingly, several proposals such as the textual annotations based retrieval has been made. In the annotations approach, the recovery is based on the comparison between the textual description that a user can make of images and descriptions of the images stored in database. Among its drawbacks, it is noted that the textual description is very dependent on the observer, in addition to the computational effort required to describe all the images in database. Another approach is the content based image retrieval - CBIR, where each image is represented by low-level features such as: color, shape, texture, etc. In this sense, the results in the area of CBIR has been very promising. However, the representation of the images semantic by low-level features is an open problem. New algorithms for the extraction of features as well as new methods of indexing have been proposed in the literature. However, these algorithms become increasingly complex. So, doing an analysis, it is natural to ask whether there is a relationship between semantics and low-level features extracted in an image? and if there is a relationship, which descriptors better represent the semantic? which leads us to a new question: how to use descriptors to represent the content of the images?. The work presented in this thesis, proposes a method to analyze the relationship between low-level descriptors and semantics in an attempt to answer the questions before. Still, it was observed that there are three possibilities of indexing images: Using composed characteristic vectors, using parallel and independent index structures (for each descriptor or set of them) and using characteristic vectors sorted in sequential order. Thus, the first two forms have been widely studied and applied in literature, but there were no records of the third way has even been explored. So this thesis also proposes to index using a sequential structure of descriptors and also the order of these descriptors should be based on the relationship that exists between each descriptor and semantics of the users. Finally, the proposed index in this thesis revealed better than the traditional approachs and yet, was showed experimentally that the order in this sequence is important and there is a direct relationship between this order and the relationship of low-level descriptors with the semantics of the users

It proposes a established computational solution in the development of a software to construct species-specific primers, used to improve the diagnosis of virus of plant for PCR. Primers are indispensable to PCR reaction, besides providing the specificity of the diagnosis. Primer is a synthetic, short, single stranded piece of DNA, used as a starter in PCR technique. It flanks the sequence desired to amplify. Species-specific primers indicate the well known region of beginning and ending where the polymerase enzyme is going to amplify on a certain species, i.e. it is specific for only a species. Thus, the main objective of this work is to automatize the process of choice of primers, optimizing the specificity of chosen primers by the traditional method

This study investigated the potentially detrimental effects of copper and elevated aquatic CO2 (hypercarbia), alone or in combination, on pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus. Fish were exposed for 48 h to control (no copper addition in normocarbia), to 400 mu g Cu2+L-1, to hypercarbic (1% CO2; PCO2=6.9 mm Hg) water and to 400 mu g Cu2+L-1+ hypercarbia. In liver the single factors caused an increase in lipid hydroperoxide concentration that was not observed when the factors were combined. Copper exposure elicited increased hepatic superoxide dismutase activity, irrespective of aquatic CO2 level. On the other hand, the effects of copper on hepatic glutathione peroxidase activity were dependent on water CO2 levels. The two stressors combined did not affect hepatic catalase activity. Hypercarbic water caused a decline in plasma glucose concentration, but this was not observed when hypercarbia was combined with copper exposure. Copper caused a decrease in branchial Na+/K+-ATPase activity that was independent of water CO2 level. Copper caused an increase in branchial metallothionein concentration that was independent of water CO2 level. Thus, branchial metallothionein and Na+/K+-ATPase were effective biomarkers of copper exposure that were not affected by water CO2 level. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Background: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is associated with high in-hospital mortality. Alveolar recruitment followed by ventilation at optimal titrated PEEP may reduce ventilator-induced lung injury and improve oxygenation in patients with ARDS, but the effects on mortality and other clinical outcomes remain unknown. This article reports the rationale, study design, and analysis plan of the Alveolar Recruitment for ARDS Trial (ART). Methods/Design: ART is a pragmatic, multicenter, randomized (concealed), controlled trial, which aims to determine if maximum stepwise alveolar recruitment associated with PEEP titration is able to increase 28-day survival in patients with ARDS compared to conventional treatment (ARDSNet strategy). We will enroll adult patients with ARDS of less than 72 h duration. The intervention group will receive an alveolar recruitment maneuver, with stepwise increases of PEEP achieving 45 cmH(2)O and peak pressure of 60 cmH2O, followed by ventilation with optimal PEEP titrated according to the static compliance of the respiratory system. In the control group, mechanical ventilation will follow a conventional protocol (ARDSNet). In both groups, we will use controlled volume mode with low tidal volumes (4 to 6 mL/kg of predicted body weight) and targeting plateau pressure <= 30 cmH2O. The primary outcome is 28-day survival, and the secondary outcomes are: length of ICU stay; length of hospital stay; pneumothorax requiring chest tube during first 7 days; barotrauma during first 7 days; mechanical ventilation-free days from days 1 to 28; ICU, in-hospital, and 6-month survival. ART is an event-guided trial planned to last until 520 events (deaths within 28 days) are observed. These events allow detection of a hazard ratio of 0.75, with 90% power and two-tailed type I error of 5%. All analysis will follow the intention-to-treat principle. Discussion: If the ART strategy with maximum recruitment and PEEP titration improves 28-day survival, this will represent a notable advance to the care of ARDS patients. Conversely, if the ART strategy is similar or inferior to the current evidence-based strategy (ARDSNet), this should also change current practice as many institutions routinely employ recruitment maneuvers and set PEEP levels according to some titration method.

We propose in this work, a new method of conceptual organization of areas involving assistive technology, categorizing them in a logical and simple manner; Furthermore, we also propose the implementation of an interface based on electroculography, able to generate high-level commands, to trigger robotic, computer and electromechanical devices. To validate the eye interface, was developed an electronic circuit associated with a computer program that captured the signals generated by eye movements of users, generating high-level commands, able to trigger an active bracing and many other electromechanical systems. The results showed that it was possible to control many electromechanical systems through only eye movements. The interface is presented as a viable way to perform the proposed task and can be improved in the signals analysis in the the digital level. The diagrammatic model developed, presented as a tool easy to use and understand, providing the conceptual organization needs of assistive technology

Alloys of Al-Sn and Al-Si are widely used in tribological applications such as cylinder liners and journal bearings. Studies of the influence of the as-cast microstructures of these alloys on the final mechanical properties and wear resistance can be very useful for planning solidification conditions in order to permit a desired level of final properties to be achieved. The aim of the present study was to contribute to a better understanding about the relationship between the scale of the dendritic network and the corresponding mechanical properties and wear behavior. The Al-Sn (15 and 20 wt pct Sn) and Al-Si (3 and 5 wt pct Si) alloys were directionally solidified under unsteady-state heat flow conditions in water-cooled molds in order to permit samples with a wide range of dendritic spacings to be obtained. These samples were subjected to tensile and wear tests, and experimental quantitative expressions correlating the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield tensile strength, elongation, and wear volume to the primary dendritic arm spacing (DAS) have been determined. The wear resistance was shown to be significantly affected by the scale of primary dendrite arm spacing. For Al-Si alloys, the refinement of the dendritic array improved the wear resistance, while for the Al-Sn alloys, an opposite effect was observed, i.e., the increase in primary dendrite arm spacing improved the wear resistance. The effect of inverse segregation, which is observed for Al-Sn alloys, on the wear resistance is also discussed.

The aim of present study was to verify the in vitro antitumor activity of a ruthenium complex, cis-(dichloro)tetraammineruthenium(III) chloride (cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)]Cl) toward different tumor cell lines. The antitumor studies showed that ruthenium(III) complex presents a relevant cytotoxic activity against murine B cell lymphoma (A-20), murine ascitic sarcoma 180 (S-180), human breast adenocarcinoma (SK-BR-3), and human T cell leukemia (Jurkat) cell lines and a very low cytotoxicity toward human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The ruthenium(III) complex decreased the fraction of tumor cells in G0/G1 and/or G2-M phases, indicating that this compound may act on resting/early entering G0/G1 cells and/or precycling G2-M cells. The cytotoxic activity of a high concentration (2 mg mL(-1)) of cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)]Cl toward Jurkat cells correlated with an increased number of annexin V-positive cells and also the presence of DNA fragmentation, suggesting that this compound induces apoptosis in tumor cells. The development of new antineoplastic medications demands adequate knowledge in order to avoid inefficient or toxic treatments. Thus, a mechanistic understanding of how metal complexes achieve their activities is crucial to their clinical success and to the rational design of new compounds with improved potency.

Ruthenium compounds in general are well suited for medicinal applications. They have been investigated as immunosuppressants, nitric oxide scavengers, antimicrobial agents, and antimalarials. The aim of this study is to evaluate the immunomodulatory activity of cis-(dichloro) tetraammineruthenium(III) chloride (cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)]Cl) on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The cytotoxic studies performed here revealed that the ruthenium( III) complex presents a cytotoxic activity towards normal human PBMC, only at very high concentration. Results also showed that cis-[ RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)] Cl presents a dual role on PBMC stimulating proliferation and interleukin-2 (IL-2) production at low concentration and inducing cytotoxicity, inability to proliferate, and inhibiting IL-2 production at high concentration. The noncytotoxic activity of cis-[RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)] Cl at low concentration towards PBMC, which correlates with the small number of annexin V positive cells and also the absence of DNA fragmentation, suggest that this compound does not induce apoptosis on PBMC. For the first time, we show that, at low concentration (10-100 mu g L(-1)), the cis-[ RuCl(2)(NH(3))(4)] Cl compound induces peripheral blood lymphocytes proliferation and also stimulates them to IL-2 production. These results open a new potential applicability of ruthenium(III) complexes as a possible immune regulatory compound acting as immune suppressor at high concentration and as immune stimulator at low concentration.

OBJETIVO: A medida da adesão tem sido considerada alternativa objetiva e versátil para avaliação do resultado do tratamento de alcoolistas. Este estudo avaliou fatores associados à adesão de alcoolistas atendidos em um programa ambulatorial. MÉTODO: Foram estudados 300 alcoolistas que concluíram a fase de avaliação do programa e avaliada a associação da adesão dos pacientes ao tratamento a todas as mais de mil variáveis do banco de dados do programa, utilizando o teste qui-quadrado de Pearson (p < 0,1). RESULTADOS: Entre as variáveis que se associaram positivamente à adesão foram identificadas: ter filhos; relação conjugal estável; afirmar problemas psicológicos; ter sofrido esquecimento ou fraqueza recentemente; sentir-se irritado quando alcoolizado; beber sozinho; apresentar comorbidade psiquiátrica; já ter procurado tratamento para alcoolismo, tratamento em psiquiatria; uso anterior de antidepressivos etc. Associaram-se negativamente: reduzir consumo por influência familiar; sentir-se auto-suficiente, expansivo, insatisfeito quando sóbrio; sentir-se auto-suficiente ou conformado quando alcoolizado; início do consumo com idade acima da média do grupo; ter-se envolvido em agressão física com amigos etc. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados sugerem a necessidade de desenvolvimento de estratégias diferenciadas para o cuidado de determinados grupos de pacientes e contribuem para a simplificação das rotinas de avaliação de alcoolistas.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to observe the number of pacemakers that had never been reprogrammed after implantation, and the effect of optimised output programming on estimated longevity of pulse generators in patients with pacemaker METHODS: Sixty patients with Teletronics Reflex pacemakers were evaluated in a pacemaker clinic, from the time of the beginning of its activities, in June 1998, until March 1999. Telemetry was performed during the first clinic visit, and we observed how many pulse generators retained nominal output settings of the manufactures indicating the absence of reprogramming until that date. After evaluation of the capture threshold, reprogramming of pacemakers was performed with a safety margin of 2 to 2.5:1, and we compared the estimated longevity based on battery current at the manufacturer's settings with that based on settings achieved after reprogramming. RESULTS: In 95% of the cases, the original programmed setting was never reprogrammed before the patients attended the pacemaker clinic. Reprogramming the pacemaker prolonged estimated pulse generator life by 19.7±15.6 months (35.5%). CONCLUSION: The majority of the pacemakers evaluated had never been reprogrammed. Estimated pulse generator longevity can be prolonged significantly, using this simple, safe, efficacious, and cost-effective procedure.

Transcripts similar to those that encode the nonstructural (NS) proteins NS3 and NS5 from flaviviruses were found in a salivary gland (SG) complementary DNA (cDNA) library from the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus.Tick extracts were cultured with cells to enable the isolation of viruses capable of replicating in cultured invertebrate and vertebrate cells. Deep sequencing of the viral RNA isolated from culture supernatants provided the complete coding sequences for the NS3 and NS5 proteins and their molecular characterisation confirmed similarity with the NS3 and NS5 sequences from other flaviviruses. Despite this similarity, phylogenetic analyses revealed that this potentially novel virus may be a highly divergent member of the genus Flavivirus. Interestingly, we detected the divergent NS3 and NS5 sequences in ticks collected from several dairy farms widely distributed throughout three regions of Brazil. This is the first report of flavivirus-like transcripts inR. microplus ticks. This novel virus is a potential arbovirus because it replicated in arthropod and mammalian cells; furthermore, it was detected in a cDNA library from tick SGs and therefore may be present in tick saliva. It is important to determine whether and by what means this potential virus is transmissible and to monitor the virus as a potential emerging tick-borne zoonotic pathogen.
