The problem of classification of Jordan bit-nodules over (non-semisimple) finite dimensional Jordan algebras with respect to their representation type is considered. The notions of diagram of a Jordan algebra and of Jordan tensor algebra of a bimodule are introduced and a mapping Qui is constructed which associates to the diagram of a Jordan algebra J the quiver of its universal associative enveloping algebra S(J). The main results are concerned with Jordan algebras of semi-matrix type, that is, algebras whose semi-simple component is a direct sum of Jordan matrix algebras. In this case, criterion of finiteness and tameness for one-sided representations are obtained, in terms of diagram and mapping Qui, for Jordan tensor algebras and for algebras with radical square equals to 0. We present the Unified Form Language (UFL), which is a domain-specific language for representing weak formulations of partial differential equations with a view to numerical approximation. Features of UFL include support for variational forms and functionals, automatic differentiation of forms and expressions, arbitrary function space hierarchies formultifield problems, general differential operators and flexible tensor algebra. With these features, UFL has been used to effortlessly express finite element methods for complex systems of partial differential equations in near-mathematical notation, resulting in compact, intuitive and readable programs. We present in this work the language and its construction. An implementation of UFL is freely available as an open-source software library. The library generates abstract syntax tree representations of variational problems, which are used by other software libraries to generate concrete low-level implementations. Some application examples are presented and libraries that support UFL are highlighted. © 2014 ACM.

We deal with homogeneous isotropic turbulence and use the two-point velocity correlation tensor field (parametrized by the time variable t) of the velocity fluctuations to equip an affine space K3 of the correlation vectors by a family of metrics. It was shown in Grebenev and Oberlack (J Nonlinear Math Phys 18:109–120, 2011) that a special form of this tensor field generates the so-called semi-reducible pseudo-Riemannian metrics ds2(t) in K3. This construction presents the template for embedding the couple (K3, ds2(t)) into the Euclidean space R3 with the standard metric. This allows to introduce into the consideration the function of length between the fluid particles, and the accompanying important problem to address is to find out which transformations leave the statistic of length to be invariant that presents a basic interest of the paper. Also we classify the geometry of the particles configuration at least locally for a positive Gaussian curvature of this configuration and comment the case of a negative Gaussian curvature.

In an earlier paper (Part I) we described the construction of Hermite code for multiple grey-level pictures using the concepts of vector spaces over Galois Fields. In this paper a new algebra is worked out for Hermite codes to devise algorithms for various transformations such as translation, reflection, rotation, expansion and replication of the original picture. Also other operations such as concatenation, complementation, superposition, Jordan-sum and selective segmentation are considered. It is shown that the Hermite code of a picture is very powerful and serves as a mathematical signature of the picture. The Hermite code will have extensive applications in picture processing, pattern recognition and artificial intelligence.

We study properties of subspace lattices related to the continuity of the map Lat and the notion of reflexivity. We characterize various “closedness” properties in different ways and give the hierarchy between them. We investigate several properties related to tensor products of subspace lattices and show that the tensor product of the projection lattices of two von Neumann algebras, one of which is injective, is reflexive.

We establish a description of the maximal C*-algebra of quotients of a unital C*-algebra A as a direct limit of spaces of completely bounded bimodule homomorphisms from certain operator submodules of the Haagerup tensor product of A with itself labelled by the essential closed right ideals of A into A. In addition the invariance of the construction of the maximal C*-algebra of quotients under strong Morita equivalence is proved.

We prove that every unital bounded linear mapping from a unital purely infinite C*-algebra of real rank zero into a unital Banach algebra which preserves elements of square zero is a Jordan homomorphism. This entails a description of unital surjective spectral isometries as the Jordan isomorphisms in this setting.

We show that if $\cl A$ is the tensor product of finitely many continuous nest algebras, $\cl B$ is a CDCSL algebra and $\cl A$ and $\cl B$ have the same normaliser semi-group then either $\cl A = \cl B$ or $\cl A^* = \cl B$.

The purpose of the present paper is to lay the foundations for a systematic study of tensor products of operator systems. After giving an axiomatic definition of tensor products in this category, we examine in detail several particular examples of tensor products, including a minimal, maximal, maximal commuting, maximal injective and some asymmetric tensor products. We characterize these tensor products in terms of their universal properties and give descriptions of their positive cones. We also characterize the corresponding tensor products of operator spaces induced by a certain canonical inclusion of an operator space into an operator system. We examine notions of nuclearity for our tensor products which, on the category of C*-algebras, reduce to the classical notion. We exhibit an operator system S which is not completely order isomorphic to a C*-algebra yet has the property that for every C*-algebra A, the minimal and maximal tensor product of S and A are equal.

We show that, if M is a subspace lattice with the property that the rank one subspace of its operator algebra is weak* dense, L is a commutative subspace lattice and P is the lattice of all projections on a separable Hilbert space, then L⊗M⊗P is reflexive. If M is moreover an atomic Boolean subspace lattice while L is any subspace lattice, we provide a concrete lattice theoretic description of L⊗M in terms of projection valued functions defined on the set of atoms of M . As a consequence, we show that the Lattice Tensor Product Formula holds for AlgM and any other reflexive operator algebra and give several further corollaries of these results.

The main objective of this thesis was to extend some basic concepts and results in module theory in algebra to the fuzzy setting. The concepts like simple module, semisimple module and exact sequences of R-modules form an important area of study in crisp module theory. In this thesis generalising these concepts to the fuzzy setting we have introduced concepts of ‘simple and semisimple L-modules’ and proved some results which include results analogous to those in crisp case. Also we have defined and studied the concept of ‘exact sequences of L-modules’.Further extending the concepts in crisp theory, we have introduced the fuzzy analogues ‘projective and injective L-modules’. We have proved many results in this context. Further we have defined and explored notion of ‘essential L-submodules of an L-module’. Still there are results in crisp theory related to the topics covered in this thesis which are to be investigated in the fuzzy setting. There are a lot of ideas still left in algebra, related to the theory of modules, such as the ‘injective hull of a module’, ‘tensor product of modules’ etc. for which the fuzzy analogues are not defined and explored.

Following an introduction to the diagonalization of matrices, one of the more difficult topics for students to grasp in linear algebra is the concept of Jordan normal form. In this note, we show how the important notions of diagonalization and Jordan normal form can be introduced and developed through the use of the computer algebra package Maple®.
