Frailty and anemia in the elderly appear to share a common pathophysiology associated with chronic inflammatory processes. This study uses an analytical, cross-sectional, population-based methodology to investigate the probable relationships between frailty, red blood cell parameters and inflammatory markers in 255 community-dwelling elders aged 65 years or older. The frailty phenotype was assessed by non-intentional weight loss, fatigue, low grip strength, low energy expenditure and reduced gait speed. Blood sample analyses were performed to determine hemoglobin level, hematocrit and reticulocyte count, as well as the inflammatory variables IL-6, IL-1ra and hsCRP. In the first multivariate analysis (model I), considering only the erythroid parameters, Hb concentration was a significant variable for both general frailty status and weight loss: a 1.0g/dL drop in serum Hb concentration represented a 2.02-fold increase (CI 1.12-3.63) in an individual's chance of being frail. In the second analysis (model II), which also included inflammatory cytokine levels, hsCRP was independently selected as a significant variable. Each additional year of age represented a 1.21-fold increase in the chance of being frail, and each 1-unit increase in serum hsCRP represented a 3.64-fold increase in the chance of having the frailty phenotype. In model II reticulocyte counts were associated with weight loss and reduced metabolic expenditure criteria. Our findings suggest that reduced Hb concentration, reduced RetAbs count and elevated serum hsCRP levels should be considered components of frailty, which in turn is correlated with sarcopenia, as evidenced by weight loss.

Hydroxyapatite (HA), a stable and biocompatible material for bone tissue therapy, may present a variable stoichiometry and accept a large number of cationic substitutions. Such substitutions may modify the chemical activity of HA surface, with possible impact on biocompatibility. In this work, we assessed the effects of calcium substitution with diverse divalent cations (Pb(2+), Sr(2+), Co(2+), Zn(2+), Fe(2+), Cu(2+), or Mg(2+)) on the biological behavior of HA. Physicochemical analyses revealed that apatite characteristics related to crystallinity and calcium dissolution/uptake rates are very sensitive to the nature of cationic substitution. Cytocompatibility was evaluated by mitochondrial activity, membrane integrity, cell density, proapoptotic potential, and adhesion tests. With the exception of Zn-HA, all the substituted HAs induced some level of apoptosis. The highest apoptosis levels were observed for Mg-HA and Co-HA. Cu-HA was the only material to impair simultaneously mitochondrial activity, membrane integrity, and cell density. The highest relative cell densities after exposure to the modified HAs were observed for Mg-HA and Zn-HA, while Co-HA significantly improved cell adhesion onto HA surface. These results show that changes on surface dissolution caused by cationic substitution, as well as the increase of metal species released to biological media, were the main responsible factors related to alterations on HA biocompatibility. Human organism is interpenetrated by the world of microorganisms, from the conception until the death. This interpenetration involves different levels of interactions between the partners including trophic exchanges, bi-directional cell signaling and gene activation, besides genetic and epigenetic phenomena, and tends towards mutual adaptation and coevolution. Since these processes are critical for the survival of individuals and species, they rely on the existence of a complex organization of adaptive systems aiming at two apparently conflicting purposes: the maintenance of the internal coherence of each partner, and a mutually advantageous coexistence and progressive adaptation between them. Humans possess three adaptive systems: the nervous, the endocrine and the immune system, each internally organized into subsystems functionally connected by intraconnections, to maintain the internal coherence of the system. The three adaptive systems aim at the maintenance of the internal coherence of the organism and are functionally linked by interconnections, in such way that what happens to one is immediately sensed by the others. The different communities of infectious agents that live within the organism are also organized into functional networks. The members of each community are linked by intraconnections, represented by the mutual trophic, metabolic and other influences, while the different infectious communities affect each other through interconnections. Furthermore, by means of its adaptive systems, the organism influences and is influenced by the microbial communities through the existence of transconnections. It is proposed that these highly complex and dynamic networks, involving gene exchange and epigenetic phenomena, represent major coevolutionary forces for humans and microorganisms.

We study the problem of the partition of a system of initial size V into a sequence of fragments s1,s2,s3 . . . . By assuming a scaling hypothesis for the probability p(s;V) of obtaining a fragment of a given size, we deduce that the final distribution of fragment sizes exhibits power-law behavior. This minimal model is useful to understanding the distribution of avalanche sizes in first-order phase transitions at low temperatures.

Este documento contiene el Diseño de Aplicación de la Norma internacional ISO 26000:2010 Modelo de Gestión de Responsabilidad Social en la Fundación Hospital San Carlos, Bogotá - Colombia, en el que se incluye la herramienta que se diseñó para el desarrollo del estudio con base en los requisitos aplicables de la norma que orientan a un comportamiento socialmente responsable; así como el diagnóstico inicial que se realizó en la organización objeto de estudio desde una perspectiva cualicuantitativa, frente a los lineamientos que la norma presenta como elementos esenciales: Principios y Materias Fundamentales. De igual manera y acorde a la metodología que se definió para el estudio que fue observacional de corte descriptivo cualitativo interpretativo, se muestra la matriz DOFA de la institución según el diagnóstico, con el respectivo análisis e interpretación derivados de los hallazgos evidenciados en el proceso de evaluación; en el cual se identificó que la Fundación Hospital San Carlos cumple con un 47,97% de los requerimientos de responsabilidad social según la norma ISO 26000:2010, con el logro de 71 criterios de los 148 evaluados y aplicables a la organización, observándose especial fragilidad en los componentes Fortalecimiento de la Comunidad, Prácticas Laborales, y Transparencia, con un cumplimiento que estuvo por debajo del 50%. Por otra parte y como propósito fundamental del estudio se presenta el diseño propuesto para la aplicación de la norma ISO 26000:2010 en la IPS Fundación Hospital San Carlos, en el cual se registran estrategias y mecanismos que los autores sugieren y recomiendan se deben trabajar para que la implementación de este modelo internacional de Responsabilidad Social, se haga de una manera pragmática y sencilla, que lo conviertan además en un diseño de aplicación de la norma que pueda ser referenciado por organizaciones del sector salud o no, interesadas en trabajar en responsabilidad social empresarial. Para la estructura del diseño de aplicación de la norma y conforme el estudio realizado, se plantean 7 pasos que deben seguir las organizaciones de manera sistemática, metódica y ordenada: comprender la responsabilidad social; reconocer su Responsabilidad Social; levantar una matriz DOFA con base en un diagnóstico institucional; planificar; estructurar y definir de la Responsabilidad Social dentro de la organización; sensibilizar, divulgar y capacitar los estándares de la Norma ISO 26000:2010; documentar el Modelo de Responsabilidad Social; Implementar el modelo de Responsabilidad Social; y monitorear el modelo mediante un mecanismo que integre un sistema de auditoría integral y la revisión de gerencia.

Measurements of down-welling microwave radiation from raining clouds performed with the Advanced Microwave Radiometer for Rain Identification (ADMIRARI) radiometer at 10.7-21-36.5 GHz during the Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation ""Cloud processes of the main precipitation systems in Brazil: A contribution to cloud resolving modeling and to the Global Precipitation Measurement"" (CHUVA) campaign held in Brazil in March 2010 represent a unique test bed for understanding three-dimensional (3D) effects in microwave radiative transfer processes. While the necessity of accounting for geometric effects is trivial given the slant observation geometry (ADMIRARI was pointing at a fixed 30 elevation angle), the polarization signal (i.e., the difference between the vertical and horizontal brightness temperatures) shows ubiquitousness of positive values both at 21.0 and 36.5 GHz in coincidence with high brightness temperatures. This signature is a genuine and unique microwave signature of radiation side leakage which cannot be explained in a 1D radiative transfer frame but necessitates the inclusion of three-dimensional scattering effects. We demonstrate these effects and interdependencies by analyzing two campaign case studies and by exploiting a sophisticated 3D radiative transfer suited for dichroic media like precipitating clouds.

Realistic coupled-channel calculation results for the (18)[O] + (58,60,64)Ni systems in the bombarding energy range 34.5 <= E(Lab) <= 6-5 MeV are presented. The overall agreement with existing experimental data is quite good. Our calculations predict an unexpected fusion suppression for above-barrier energies, with an important contribution of the two neutron ((18)O, (16)O) transfer channel couplings. The sub-barrier fusion enhancement and the above barrier suppression, predicted by the calculations, are consistent with the nuclear structure of the Ni region. Comparisons with recently reported similar effects in reactions induced by the (6)He projectile are discussed. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Researchers have made different attempts to investigate the interaction between the quality and efficiency of a country’s institutions and a country’s economic performance. Within this framework, emphasis has been put on the relationship between the legal institutions and the financial system as essential factors in creating and enhancing overall economic growth. The link between legal institutions and the financial systems, however, is still somewhat controversial. This paper reports on a survey administered to 1,362 participants regarding preferences for investment under different legal and financial institutions. Results suggest that the performance of a country‘s legal institutions affects the willingness to invest money in that country and that people of different gender, age, political traditions, and professional experience react differently to these institutions.
