The primary goal of this research is to design and develop an education technology to support learning in global operations management. The research implements a series of studies to determine the right balance among user requirements, learning methods and applied technologies, on a view of student-centred learning. This research is multidisciplinary by nature, involving topics from various disciplines such as global operations management, curriculum and contemporary learning theory, and computer aided learning. Innovative learning models that emphasise on technological implementation are employed and discussed throughout this research.

The need for global logistics services has increased dramatically and become extremely complex and dynamic as a result of a number of changes in manufacturing and in industrial production. In response, the logistics industry is changing in a variety of ways, including mergers to form integrated transportation service providers, outsourcing and increased use of information technology. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the evolution and the most important trends in the logistics services provider (LSP) industry. Specific emphasis will be given to the role of Internet-based applications. Within this context, the chapter will also present the role of logistics e-marketplaces. In particular, based on the secondary research of currently existing logistics on-line marketplaces, an analysis and classification of them is provided with the aim of identifying service gaps. The analysis reveals that logistics electronic marketplaces, despite the increased range of services currently offered, still face limitations with reference to integrated customs links or translation services, which both reduce the efficiency of global operations.
Model for facilities or vendors location in a global scale considering several echelons in the Chain

The facilities location problem for companies with global operations is very complex and not well explored in the literature. This work proposes a MILP model that solves the problem through minimization of the total logistic cost. Main contributions of the model are the pioneer carrying cost calculation, the treatment given to the take-or-pay costs and to the international tax benefits such as drawback and added value taxes in Brazil. The model was successfully applied to a real case of a chemical industry with industrial plants and sales all over the world. The model application recommended a totally new sourcing model for the company.

This paper analyzes the internationalization of new multinationals from emerging countries. It also focuses on Production`s role in firm internationalization, a subject seldom addressed because the discipline of International Manufacturing is still embryonic, while International Business tends to overlook production. The authors integrate International Business and International Manufacturing concepts and frameworks in order to analyze new multinationals from emerging countries, using the empirical evidence of a survey plus case studies of Brazilian multinationals for understanding late-movers` strategies and competences, with emphasis on production. Com este trabalho pretendemos desenvolver um projeto de intervenção no âmbito do Mapeamento de Competências, a implementar na Amorim & Irmãos, SA, a Entidade Acolhedora do Projeto. O diagnóstico realizado à Função Recursos Humanos permitiu identificar como potencial de intervenção o Mapeamento de Competências Chave. As Competências Chave são fundamentais para a operacionalização da missão e visão das organizações. Nos contextos de atuação global das empresas prevalece a incerteza e a necessidade de constantes readaptações da estrutura organizativa para garantir o sucesso dos planos estratégicos do negócio. Neste contexto empresarial, os modelos de gestão das pessoas assentes na Avaliação e Gestão de Competências são uma resposta adequada aos ciclos frequentes de mudança organizacional. O Mapeamento de Competências é, neste quadro de atuação das empresas, fundamental para a necessária adequação das competências dos colaboradores à operacionalização do plano estratégico do negócio. Assim, optamos pela conceção de um projeto de intervenção para Mapeamento das Competências Chave focado nas chefias de uma unidade industrial produtora de rolhas de cortiça. A metodologia adotada para a implementação deste projeto parte dos elementos estratégicos da empresa: Fatores Críticos de Sucessos, Pontos Fortes e Pontos Fracos. Foram definidos dois âmbitos para a implementação de uma estratégia de mapeamento de competências de cima para baixo: (1) identificação das Competência Chave e (2) definição da Competências Chave. Na implementação deste projeto intervieram vários interlocutores: as chefias intermedias da Unidade Industrial de Lamas, o Diretor de Logística, o Diretor de Recursos Humanos e um Técnico de Recursos Humanos que, sob a gestão do autor do projeto, manifestaram ao longo de todo o processo o envolvimento e compromisso indispensáveis para a sua concretização. Os resultados da avaliação permitem concluir que o projeto planeado e implementado atingiu a finalidade proposta: ter validado, em novembro de 2015, o Portfólio das Competências Chave Transversais e as Competências Chave Específicas das chefias intermedias da Unidade Industrial de Lamas, necessárias para a sustentabilidade do negócio da Amorim & Irmãos, SA.

We propose a new approach and related indicators for globally distributed software support and development based on a 3-year process improvement project in a globally distributed engineering company. The company develops, delivers and supports a complex software system with tailored hardware components and unique end-customer installations. By applying the domain knowledge from operations management on lead time reduction and its multiple benefits to process performance, the workflows of globally distributed software development and multitier support processes were measured and monitored throughout the company. The results show that the global end-to-end process visibility and centrally managed reporting at all levels of the organization catalyzed a change process toward significantly better performance. Due to the new performance indicators based on lead times and their variation with fixed control procedures, the case company was able to report faster bug-fixing cycle times, improved response times and generally better customer satisfaction in its global operations. In all, lead times to implement new features and to respond to customer issues and requests were reduced by 50%.

Tämän työn päätavoitteena oli rakentaa malli yrityksen kansainvälisten strategisten kumppanuuksien (partnership-hankintasuhteiden) aloittamiselle ja kehittämiselle sekä soveltaa sitä operatiivisessa toiminnassa kansainväliseen toimittajaan – arvioiden suhteen tulevaisuuden menestystekijät ja rakentaen toimintamalli yhteistyön askelille. Työssä rakennettiin kvalitatiivisen tutkimusmenetelmään perustuen malli askeleista strategiseen kumppanuuteen kansainvälisen toimittajan kanssa. Malli luotiin yrityksen bisnesprosessien, teoriatiedon, bench-markingien ja haastattelujen pohjalta. Mallilla pyritään yrityksessä jatkossa vastaamaan yhä kiristyvään markkinoiden kilpailutilanteeseen. Työn sovellusosassa keskityttiin valittujen tuotteiden toimitusketjun kehittämiseen. Strategisella kumppanuudella kansainvälisen toimittajan kanssa kehitetään toimitusketjua ja aikaansaadaan menestystä työssä luodun toimintamallin mukaan.

Maritime transports are very essential for Finland as over 80% of the foreign trade in the country is seaborne and possibilities to carry out these transports by are limited. Any disruption in maritime transports has negative consequences to many sectors in the Finnish economy. Maritime transport thus represents critical infrastructure for Finland. This report focuses on the importance of maritime transports on security of supply in Finland and for the so called critical industries in particular. The report summarizes the results of the Work Package 2 of the research project STOCA – “Study of cargo flows in the Gulf of Finland in emergency situations”. The aim of the research was to analyze the cargo flows and infrastructure that are vital for maintaining security of supply in Finland, as well as the consequences of disruptions in the maritime traffic for the Finnish critical industries and for the Finnish society. In the report we give a presentation of the infrastructure and transport routes which are critical for maintaining security of supply in Finland. We discuss import dependency of the critical industries, and the importance of the Gulf of Finland ports for Finland. We assess vulnerabilities associated with the critical material flows of the critical industries, and possibilities for alternative routings in case either one or several of the ports in Finland would be closed. As a concrete example of a transport disruption we analyze the consequences of the Finnish stevedore strike at public ports (4.3.–19.3.2010). The strike stopped approximately 80% of the Finnish foreign trade. As a result of the strike Finnish companies could not export their products and/or import raw materials, components and spare parts, or other essential supplies. We carried out personal interviews with representatives of the companies in Finnish critical industries to find out about the problems caused by the strike, how companies carried out they transports and how they managed to continue their operations during the strike. Discussions with the representatives of the companies gave us very practical insights about companies’ preparedness towards transport disruptions in general. Companies in the modern world are very vulnerable to transport disruptions because companies regardless of industries have tried to improve their performance by optimizing their resources and e.g. by reducing their inventory levels. At the same time they have become more and more dependent on continuous transports. Most companies involved in foreign trade have global operations and global supply chains, so any disruption anywhere in the world can have an impact on the operations of the company causing considerable financial loss. The volcanic eruption in Iceland in April 2010 stopping air traffic in the whole Northern Europe and most recently the earth quake causing a tsunami in Japan in March 2011 are examples of severe disruptions causing considerable negative impacts to companies’ supply chains. Even though the Finnish stevedore strike was a minor disruption compared to the natural catastrophes mentioned above, it showed the companies’ vulnerability to transport disruptions very concretely. The Finnish stevedore strike gave a concrete learning experience of the importance of preventive planning for all Finnish companies: it made them re-think their practical preparedness towards transport risks and how they can continue with their daily operations despite the problems. Many companies realized they need to adapt their long-term countermeasures against transport disruptions. During the strike companies did various actions to secure their supply chains. The companies raised their inventory levels before the strike began, they re-scheduled or postponed their deliveries, shifted customer orders between production plants among their company’s production network or in the extreme case bought finished products from their competitor to fulfil their customers’ order. Our results also show that possibilities to prepare against transport disruptions differ between industries. The Finnish society as a whole is very dependent on imports of energy, various raw materials and other supplies needed by the different industries. For many of the Finnish companies in the export industries and e.g. in energy production maritime transport is the only transport mode the companies can use due to large volumes of materials transported or due to other characteristics of the goods. Therefore maritime transport cannot be replaced by any other transport mode. In addition, a significant amount of transports are concentrated in certain ports. From a security of supply perspective attention should be paid to finding ways to decrease import dependency and ensuring that companies in the critical industries can ensure the continuity of their operations.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata suomalaisen PK-yrityksen kasvamista globaa- liksi toimijaksi. Tapahtunut kasvu on tarkoittanut case-yrityksen kohdalla liike- vaihdon ja henkilöstömäärän kasvun lisäksi myös toimipaikkojen määrän kasvua ja organisaatiorakenteen monimutkaistumista. Näiden muutosten perusteella ja ta- pahtuneiden muutoskohtien avulla on löydettävissä yrityksen toimintaa kuvaavia vaiheita, joita ovat alkuvaihe, kasvuvaihe ja kypsä vaihe. Näiden vaiheiden jälkeen tulee vielä neljäs vaihe, eli uusiutumisvaihe tai laskeva vaihe. Tämän neljännen vaiheen suunta riippuu yrityksen kyvystä uusiutua ja kehittyä vastaamaan uusiin tuleviin haasteisiin joita aikaisempaa globaalimpi toiminta tuo tullessaan. Tapahtuneilla muutoksilla on ollut myös vaikutusta tietohallintoon. Tämä tieto- hallinnossa tapahtunut muutos onkin tämän tutkimuksen ydin, eli mitä haasteita ja vaatimuksia Trafotekin tietohallinto on kohdannut toiminnan eri vaiheissa, ja onko tietohallinto pystynyt omalta osaltaan vastaamaan näihin vaatimuksiin. Toiminnan alkuvaiheessa tietotekniikalla ei ollut suurtakaan strategista ja liike- toimintaa tukevaa roolia, ja tietohallinto pystyikin vastaamaan liiketoiminnan vaa- timuksiin. Tässä vaiheessa Trafotekissa ei ollut erillistä tietohallintoa, vaan tieto- tekniset työt hoidettiin muiden työtehtävien ohessa. Tietotekniset tehtävät olivat lähinnä tukitoimintoihin liittyviä tehtäviä. Kasvuvaiheessa tietotekniikan merkitys kasvoi, ja Trafotekiin tuli tarvetta luoda erillinen tietotekninen työtehtävä. Tässä toiminnan vaiheessa kyvykkyydet ja kypsyys eivät kuitenkaan kehittyneet halu- tulla tavalla, sillä kaikki käytössä oleva resursointi käytettiin edelleen päivittäisiin tukitoimintoihin, kehittämisen sijaan. Sama kehittymättömyys vaivasi toiminnan kypsässä vaiheessa. Tässä vaiheessa toki alettiin jo ymmärtää, että tietohallinnolla on strateginen rooli, joka tukee liiketoimintaa sen tavoitteiden saavuttamisessa. Tehty tutkimus tukee näkemystä siitä, että myös tietohallinnon kehittäminen on kokonaisvaltaista kehittämistä, jossa pitää huomioida toimintaa tukevia kyvyk- kyyksiä kaikissa toiminnan vaiheissa. Yrityksen kasvaessa myös tietohallinnon tu- lee kasvaa ja kehittyä. Osa tämän tutkimuksen tapahtumista oli tapahtunut ennen tämän tutkimustyön varsinaista aloittamista, eli ne kuvataan ja selitetään jälkijättöisesti. Des données de Statistique Canada montrent que le Québec a perdu 86 700 emplois manufacturiers nets entre 2004 et 2008, ce qui représente un recul de 13,8% (Bernard, 2009). Un dollar canadien fort, la concurrence internationale, les délocalisations de la production et les consolidations globales d'opérations sont souvent mentionnés comme étant les causes des difficultés du secteur manufacturier canadien - principalement concentré au Québec et en Ontario. La crise financière amorcée à l’été 2007, a contribué à aggraver la crise propre au secteur manufacturier dont les origines remontent au début des années 2000 (Weir, 2007; AgirE, 2008; Pilat et al., 2006). Cette recherche examine le processus de restructuration du secteur manufacturier québécois de manière détaillée au niveau des établissements afin d’en évaluer l’ampleur et la nature entre 2003 et 2008. Les données colligées permettent de poser un regard unique et original sur les restructurations ayant impliqué des licenciements collectifs au Québec. Ces données sont issues de deux sources. D'abord, nous avons utilisé une liste d‘entreprises qui ont envoyé un avis de licenciement collectif au Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale du Québec entre 2003 et 2008. En second lieu, nous avons eu recours aux archives en ligne des médias pour trouver d’autres évènements de restructuration non rapportés par le ministère ainsi que pour obtenir des informations complémentaires sur les évènements déjà compilés dans la liste du ministère. Notre méthodologie de recherche et notre typologie analytique des types de restructuration sont basées sur celles développées par l’European Monitoring Center on Change (EMCC) et reprises dans certaines études comme celles de Bronfenbrenner et Luce (2004) et Hickey et Schenk (soumis). Les résultats, présentés en termes d’événements de restructuration et d’emplois perdus, sont ventilés en fonction de quelques variables (année d’occurrence, taille de l’établissement, sous-secteur d’activité, intensité technologique, région administrative, types de restructuration). Les raisons données par l’entreprise afin de justifier la restructuration ont aussi été colligées. Au cours de la période étudiée, nous avons identifié au total 1 631 évènements de restructurations dans le secteur manufacturier à travers toutes les régions du Québec, qui ont entraîné la perte de 129 383 emplois. Ainsi, 78 246 emplois ont été perdus suite à la réduction des activités de l‘établissement et 51 137 emplois l’ont été suite à la fermeture de leur établissement. La forme la plus fréquente de restructuration est la restructuration interne, suivi par la faillite/fermeture. Les types de restructuration qui ont engendré le plus de pertes d’emplois en moyenne par évènement sont dans l’ordre, la délocalisation, la sous-traitance, la consolidation d’activités ainsi que la fusion-acquisition. L’année 2008 fut celle où il y a eu le plus grand nombre de restructurations. Montréal et la Montérégie sont les régions qui ont le plus été touchées par la restructuration, les pertes d’emplois et les fermetures d’établissements. Les industries à faible intensité technologique ont davantage été frappées par la crise manufacturière. C’est le sous-secteur du papier et du bois qui connu le plus grand nombre d’événements de restructurations. Ce sous-secteur a aussi subi les pertes d’emplois les plus importantes, suivi par le sous-secteur du textile et du vêtement. Ces deux industries se partagent plus de la moitié des fermetures d’établissements. L’insuffisance de la demande (22,1%), la concurrence internationale (14,3%), la hausse de la valeur du dollar canadien (11,2%), la réorganisation interne de l’entreprise (11,1%), la rationalisation des coûts visant une augmentation de la profitabilité (10,1%) ainsi que les difficultés financières (9,9%) sont les motifs principaux donnés par les employeurs. Nos résultats montrent qu’il y a eu deux temps dans l’évolution de la restructuration du secteur manufacturier au Québec. Un premier temps au début de la période où des changements structurels profonds ont été observés dans certaines industries (p.ex. le bois-papier et le textile-vêtement) et un second temps, en fin de période caractérisé par des changements davantage liés à la conjoncture en raison de la crise économique dont les effets commençaient à se faire sentir à ce moment (Institut de la statistique du Québec, 2009a).

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o recente processo de fusões e a aquisições na economia brasileira, no tocante aos seus impactos sobre a concentração. Busca-se verificar correlações entre a natureza da operação e algumas variáveis econômicas referentes às empresas envolvidas. Através de dados dos relatórios de julgamento dos atos de concentração do Conselho Administrativo de Defesa Econômica (CADE) e dos pareceres econômicos formulados pela Secretaria de Acompanhamento Econômico do Ministério da Fazenda (SEAE), realiza-se um estudo econométrico através do modelo logit. A suposição é de que operações de natureza horizontal possuem efeitos prejudiciais maiores sobre a concentração de mercado do que as de natureza vertical e/ou conglomerado. O resultado obtido mostra que a desnacionalização de empresas e as operações ocorridas em alguns setores aumentam a concentração, enquanto que nas operações de abrangência mundial este efeito é menor.

Muitas empresas manufatureiras buscam aumentar a participação dos serviços em seus negócios. Essa estratégia é conhecida como servitização e significa aumentar a oferta de pacotes combinados de produtos e serviços com foco nos clientes e seus negócios. Porém, a servitização constitui um grande desafio para essas empresas, pois seus modelos de negócio tradicionais tem foco no desenvolvimento, produção e venda de produtos. Esta pesquisa investiga como uma empresa manufatureira modifica seu modelo de negócio para aumentar sua servitização. A pesquisa também analisa quais são as motivações para que uma empresa busque isso e quais são os desafios que ela enfrenta nessa busca. Com esses objetivos, realizou-se um estudo de caso de uma montadora de veículos pesados com operações globais e presença consolidada no Brasil. Conduziu-se entrevistas com 8 executivos da empresa, responsáveis por Vendas, Serviços, Marketing e Produção no Brasil e América Latina. As entrevistas foram combinadas com análise de documentos da empresa entre os anos de 1996 e 2011. Utilizou-se o conceito de modelo de negócio como unidade básica de análise, já que este conceito explica como uma empresa cria, entrega e captura valor. Os resultados mostram que o modelo de negócio da empresa está em transição, de seu foco tradicional em produto, para maior centralidade do cliente e suas operações. A proposta de valor da empresa passou a enfatizar o desempenho de seus pacotes de produtos e serviços nas operações dos clientes, ao invés do foco tradicional na qualidade dos produtos. A empresa também criou novas organizações, processos e métricas com foco nos clientes e novos modelos de receitas, baseados em contratos de risco e na venda de desempenho e disponibilidade. Os resultados mostram que a empresa possui motivações estratégicas, financeiras e de marketing para buscar a servitização. Eles também mostram que o alinhamento das diversas áreas da empresa e de sua rede de parceiros, para maior foco nos clientes e em serviços, ao invés do seu foco tradicional no produto, ainda representa um importante desafio empresarial.
Gestão estratégica de operações sustentáveis: perspectiva institucional e abordagem dos stakeholders

The competiveness within the global market has forced large manufacturing companies to reorganize their global operations. To act proficiently abroad is therefore no longer a choice but an important prerequisite. In global production networks, there are different plant roles that serve different purposes. One of the important roles within these networks is the core plant role. There are limited amount of the researches done regarding the core plant role. There is also a lack of consistency regarding the definition of the core plant role. It is also evident that there is a knowledge gap regarding the managerial aspects of this plant role both in the academia and in the industry. Managing a core plant requires certain capabilities. It is important to target this knowledge gap since global manufacturing is becoming a common norm for large enterprises and the importance of the core plant role is getting more evident. There is also a lack of understanding towards the challenges that a core plant must deal with both within the organization and globally towards the other plants within the manufacturing network. To address this knowledge gap further, two research questions were created ―What key capabilities are required in order to manage the core plant role?” (RQ1) and ―What are the main challenges in managing the core plant role?” (RQ2). Case study was chosen as the research method for this study since it is the most appropriate method when investigating a phenomenon in its own context. Interviews were the main research technique used to collect data. 18 semi-structured interviews were conducted in eight different cases. A literature review was conducted and was the foundation for the interview guide used in the interviews and for the data analysis. The results show that various capabilities are important for the management of the core plant role. Proximity to R&D and knowledge were the most emphasized factors. For the main challenges in terms of managing a core plant, the communication, cooperation and coordination where the most challenging aspects. Based upon finding, two frameworks have been proposed a concluding generalization and contribution of this research study. The study provides a generalization based upon data that has been collected from companies from different industries. These findings are a contribution towards both the large enterprises operating globally and the academia.

Työn tavoitteena oli määrittää myyntikonfiguraattorissa käytettävän tuotemallin yleinen rakenne. Ensin selvitettiin tuotemallin luomista ja konseptin suunnittelua kirjallisuuden ja asiantuntijoiden haastattelujen avulla. Asiantuntijoiden haastattelut toteutettiin vapaamuotoisesti kysymyslistaa apuna käyttäen. Tämän lisäksi työssä pohditaan sähköisen liiketoiminnan roolia sekä myyntikonfiguraattorin tulevaisuuden näkymiä. Diplomityössä käsitellään tuotemallia yleisellä tasolla. Toinen näkökulma käsittelee tuotemallia tietoteknisissä sovelluksissa käytettyjen menetelmien pohjalta. Tuotemallin muodostaminen aloitettiin asiakkaalle näkyvästä osasta eli myyntikonfiguraattorin ulkoasusta. Seuraava ongelma oli standardoida tuotetta ja tarjousta kuvaavat dokumentit globaalisti. Tähän ratkaisuun päädyttiin haastattelujen sekä asiantuntijoiden kokoontumisien pohjalta. Loppuosa diplomityöstä käsittelee myyntikonfiguraattorin asemaa kohdeyrityksen sähköisessä liiketoiminnassa sekä esittelee erään näkemyksen myyntikonfiguraattorin yhteenliittymästä asiakashallinta- ja tuotetiedonhallinta järjestelmiin. Diplomityössä saavutettiin asetetut tavoiteet: Myyntikonfigurattori yhtenäistää kohdeyrityksen hinnoittelua globaalisti, nopeuttaa tarjouksentekoprosessia, helpottaa uuden tuotteen lanseerausta ja standardoi tuotemallin globaalisti. Myyntikonfiguraattorin integrointi muihin tietojärjestelmiin tehostaa myynnin toimintoja. Haasteeksi jää loppukäyttäjien kannustaminen tehokkaaseen käyttöön sekä ylläpidon toteuttaminen. Ilman käyttäjiä ja heidän innostustaan voi projekti menettää johdon luottamuksen.
