More fathers than ever before attend at the birth of their child and, internationally, there is a palpable pressure on maternity and neonatal services to include and engage with fathers. It is, thus, more important than ever to understand how fathers experience reproductive and neonatal health services and to understand how fathers can be successfully accommodated in these environments alongside their partners. In this paper we advance a theoretical framework for re-thinking fatherhood and health services approaches to fatherhood based on Critical Studies of Men and Masculinities (CSM). We illustrate the importance of this feminist-informed theoretical approach to understanding the gendered experiences of fathers in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) setting. Using a longitudinal follow-up research design, with two data collection points, a total of 39 in-depth semi-structured interviews was conducted with 21 fathers of infants admitted to NICU between August 2008 and December 2009. The findings demonstrate: (i) ways in which men are forging new gendered identities around the birth of their baby but, over time, acknowledge women as the primary caregivers; (ii) how social class is a key determinant of men’s ability to enact hegemonic forms of ‘involved fatherhood’ in the NICU, and; (iii) how men also encounter resistance from their partners and health professionals in challenging a gender order which associates women with the competent care of infants. An understanding of these gendered experiences operating at both individual and structural levels is critical to leading change for the inclusion of fathers as equal parents in healthcare settings. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Developing a strong relationship is essential for optimal child development and it is possible for fathers to fully participate in developing this close bond. Men often develop this relationship through interactive play which usually occurs later in their child's development. As a result, fathers often feel dissatisfied with their ability to form a close attachment in the early post-partum period, which in turn may increase their stress level. However, men can be prepared for the transition to fatherhood if they develop the knowledge and skill necessary to create positive relationships with their infants. Infant massage appears to be a viable option for teaching fathers care-giving sensitivity. To build on the notion of teaching fathers attachment system behaviour in early infancy, a quasi-experimental, mixed methods study was employed. Twenty-four infant-father dyads were recruited for the study. The fathers were asked to fill out the Parent Stress Index and a facial cues rating scale at two times, one month apart. The experimental group also participated in an infant massage intervention taught by a Certified Infant Massage Instructor of the International Association of Infant Massage. A repeated measures MANOVA revealed infant massage decreased paternal stress. Qualitatively, the fathers provided rich descriptions of their experience in the baby massage class which provided useful insight into the efficacy of the intervention. Overall, the fathers enjoyed the experience but did not necessarily see the direct benefit of the intervention on their relationship. Recommendations for pre and postnatal education for fathers are made.

A father’s participation in a child’s life has been regarded as a significant factor in the enhancement of a couple’s relationship. Although the investigations between paternal behavior and marital satisfaction come with mixed results, they clearly link the concepts of maternal and paternal role expectations to paternal behavior, which can be also moderated by earner status, child’s gender, and traditional versus contemporary role expectations. Research needs to focus on examining how individuals’ perceptions of role expectations relate to fathers’ actual parenting behavior. Therefore, a framework that outlines the interaction between and among these variables is developed, as supported by recent literature as a guide for future research directives.

Infertility treatments are relatively easily available in most Western countries today, but the psychological consequences of these high-tech treatments have scarcely been addressed. The purpose of this controlled longitudinal study was to explore the early environment of the infant born by assisted reproductive treatment (ART). We focused on the parents mental well-being, marital relations and experience of parenting. In addition to this, we assessed parent child interaction and parents mental representations of their child after long-standing infertility and several unsuccessful ART attempts. The subjects were infertile couples who achieved a singleton pregnancy by in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The control group comprised of spontaneously conceiving couples with singleton pregnancies. ART women showed fewer depressive symptoms than controls during pregnancy and after delivery, but the difference vanished by the end of the child s first year. ART men consistently had lower levels of anxiety symptoms, sleeping difficulties, and social dysfunction than control men. Control women experienced a decrease in dyadic consensus during the child s first year, which did not happen among ART women. After the child was born, ART men reported a higher level of sexual affection compared with control men. Psychic symptoms and stressful life events were differently related to marital relations in ART and control groups. The parenting experiences of ART mothers were in general at a higher level, compared with controls, and they changed in a positive direction during the child s first year. Fathering experiences were at the same level in both groups, and they changed positively in both groups by the end of the child s first year. The parenting experiences of ART mothers and fathers were more resilient to certain child-related stressors than those of control group. Both mothers and fathers with long-term infertility showed more sensitive behaviour with their child in toddler-age than in infancy. Correspondingly, children s cooperation increased. Mothers often mentioned a fear of miscarriage and difficulty in creating representations of the child during pregnancy. Descriptions of the infants were mainly rich, vivid and loaded with positive features. In conclusion, ART parents in general seem to adapt well to the transition to parenthood. Former infertility and ART do not seem to constitute a risk for parents mental health, marital relations or experience of parenting. Even longstanding infertility with several unsuccessful treatment attempts did not create a risk as regards parenting behaviour or parents mental representations of their child. In this group, however, women were found to have fear for losing the child and difficulty in creating representations of the child during pregnancy, which in some cases may indicate need for psychosocial support. Even though our results are encouraging, infertility and infertility treatments are generally considered as a stressful experience. It is a challenge for health authorities to recognize those couples who need professional help to overcome the distressing experiences of infertility and ART.

Evolutionary conflicts among social hymenopteran nestmates are theoretically likely to arise over the production of males and the sex ratio. Analysis of these conflicts has become an important focus of research into the role of kin selection in shaping social traits of hymenopteran colonies. We employ microsatellite analysis of nestmates of one social hymenopteran, the primitively eusocial and monogynous bumblebee Bombus hypnorum, to evaluate these conflicts. In our 14 study colonies, B. hypnorum queens mated between one and six times (arithmetic mean 2.5). One male generally predominated, fathering most of the offspring, thus the effective number of matings was substantially lower (1–3.13; harmonic mean 1.26). In addition, microsatellite analysis allowed the detection of alien workers, those who could not have been the offspring of the queen, in approximately half the colonies. Alien workers within the same colony were probably sisters. Polyandry and alien workers resulted in high variation among colonies in their sociogenetic organization. Genetic data were consistent with the view that all males (n = 233 examined) were produced by a colony’s queen. Male parentage was therefore independent of the sociogenetic organization of the colony, suggesting that the queen, and not the workers, was in control of the laying of male-destined eggs. The population-wide sex ratio (fresh weight investment ratio) was weakly female biased. No evidence for colony-level adaptive sex ratio biasing could be detected.

Work and family roles have changed considerably in the past number of decades. Fathers are now expected to fulfil the role of 'new father' that involves actively caring and sharing in child rearing and, at the same time, maintain commitment to their occupational role. As a consequence, men are subject to the same pressure that women were when they initially entered the workplace decades ago and indeed still are today. This study aims to explore the meanings fathers attach to their life roles, how these meanings influence behaviour within these roles and how they negotiate the demands of these roles. In-depth interviews were carried out with 15 fathers, and the results were analysed adhering to the principles of grounded theory. The findings show the variability among fathers in both their commitment to fathering and the meanings they attach to that role. A significant tension between new fatherhood ideals and actual fathering practices is also apparent. These findings are discussed drawing upon traditional definitions of masculinity and wider occupational and cultural influences.

Parent education programs offered by a variety of public health services are effective support and knowledge resources that enhance positive parenting competencies in early childhood and adolescence. However, parenting education programs are less effective and encompass fewer benefits for fathers in comparison to mothers. This study sought to investigate trends of paternal involvement in early childhood and to compare the influence of parenting education programs on paternal involvement and conceptualization of fathers. A sample of 52 fathers, between the ages of 19 to 54, with children 6 years old and younger completed an electronic or hard copy version of a survey questionnaire reporting on their fathering and experiences as a dad. Findings indicate the sample of Canadian fathers self-reported high levels of paternal involvement, including many who favoured play-based interactions with their children. Although no significant difference in levels of involvement was noted between fathers who had versus those who had not previously participated in a parenting education program, half of the Canadian fathers indicated that supports are needed to strengthen their role as fathers. Results suggest that future initiatives to strengthen parent education program services available in Canada should specifically consider the father’s role.

Tout autant que la mère, le père est une figure d’attachement importante pour l’enfant. Toutefois le lien d’attachement père-enfant se formerait différemment du lien d’attachement mère-enfant. Les pères sont souvent plus engagés que les mères dans des activités ludiques, moins dans des activités de soins. Les jeux faits avec le père sont souvent plus physiques aussi, plus stimulants. En incitant son enfant au jeu de façon sensible, le père devient un tremplin pour l’exploration de son enfant et le développement de sa confiance en soi et en l’autre. C’est en tant que figure d’ouverture sur le monde que le père aurait une plus grande influence sur le développement de son enfant. C’est ce que nous apprennent les études sur l’engagement paternel. Jusqu’à maintenant peu d’auteurs ont étudié l’engagement des pères en même temps que l’attachement père-enfant, mais plusieurs proposent déjà que cette fonction d’ouverture sur le monde expliquerait la formation du lien père-enfant. La relation d’attachement père-enfant serait basée sur une relation d’activation. L’objectif de la présente thèse est précisément de mieux comprendre la nature du lien d’attachement père-enfant. Deux articles composent cette thèse. Le premier article est théorique et fait une recension de la littérature sur l’attachement père-enfant et l’engagement paternel. Le deuxième article est empirique et propose justement de vérifier l’influence de l’engagement paternel sur la formation du lien d’attachement au père. En tout 53 dyades pères-enfants ont participé à cette étude. L’engagement des pères au niveau du réconfort, de la stimulation et de la discipline a été évalué lorsque les enfants avaient entre 12 et 18 mois. À cet âge, la qualité d’attachement et de la relation d’activation ont aussi été évaluées, respectivement avec la Situation étrangère et la Situation risquée. Les deux mises en situation ont ensuite été comparées pour voir laquelle prédit mieux le développement des enfants à l’âge préscolaire, au niveau des compétences sociales, des problèmes intériorisés et des problèmes extériorisés. Les résultats obtenus indiquent que la Situation risquée prédit mieux le développement socio-affectif des enfants (compétences sociales et problèmes intériorisés). Aucun lien n’a été trouvé avec la Situation étrangère, même en tenant compte de l’engagement du père au niveau du réconfort. Ces résultats valident la théorie de la relation d’activation et l’importance de la fonction paternelle d’ouverture sur le monde. Les limites de la présente étude, ainsi que ses implications théoriques et méthodologiques, seront abordées dans la discussion du deuxième article et en conclusion de la présente thèse.

La présente étude longitudinale a pour objectif d’évaluer la stabilité de la relation d’activation père-enfant entre 12-18 mois et 3-5 ans. De plus, nous nous intéressons aux facteurs qui pourraient être associés à la stabilité ou l’instabilité. La situation risquée a été conduite auprès des 39 dyades père-enfant aux deux temps de mesures, soit lorsque l’enfant était âgé entre 12 et 18 mois et lorsqu’il était âgé entre 3 et 5 ans. Le questionnaire d’ouverture au monde ainsi que le questionnaire d’évènements de vie ont été passés aux pères. Les résultats démontrent que seulement 46 % des enfants sont demeurés stables. L’instabilité et la stabilité ne se sont pas révélées associées significativement à aucun des facteurs mesurés.

Background: Oxytocin is associated with the establishment and quality of maternal behavior in animal models. Parallel investigations in humans are now under way. This article reviews the current research examining the role of oxytocin in mother-infant relations, attachment, and bonding in humans. Methods: A systematic search was made of three electronic databases and other bibliographic sources for published research studies that examined oxytocin and mother-infant relations in humans, including attachment, maternal behavior, parenting, and mother-infant relations. Results: Eight studies were identified, all of which were unique in their methodologies, populations studied, and measures used. Seven studies found significant and strong associations between levels or patterns of oxytocin and aspects of mother-infant relations or attachment. Conclusions: Oxytocin appears to be of crucial importance for understanding mother-infant relationships. The findings of this review suggest that the pioneering, but preliminary, research undertaken to date is promising and that replication with larger samples is needed. Research that draws on more robust measures of attachment and bonding, as well as improved measures of oxytocin that include both central and peripheral levels, will elucidate the role of oxytocin in human mother-infant relationships. As the production of oxytocin is by no means restricted to mothers, the extension of the oxytocin studies to fathering, as well as to alloparental caregiving, would be an intriguing next step.

Researchers in intellectual disability have had limited theoretical engagement with mainstream theories of masculinity. In this article, the authors consider what mainstream theories of masculinity may offer to applied research on, and hence to therapeutic interventions with, men and boys with intellectual disability. An example from one research project that explored male sexual health illustrates how using masculinity theory provided greater insight into gendered data. Finally, we discuss the following five topics to illustrate how researchers might use theories of masculinity: (a) fathering, (b) male physical expression, (c) sexual expression, (d) men's health, and (e) underweight and obesity. Theories of masculinity offer an additional framework to analyze and conceptualize gendered data; we challenge researchers to engage with this body of work.
