Enhancing reflexivity and technology in translation learning: case study on the use of ePortfolio as a training environment

In this paper we describe a casestudy of an experiment on how reflexivity and technology can enhance learning, by using ePorfolios as a training environment to develop translation skills. Translation is today a multiskilled job and translators need to assure their clients a good performance and quality, both in language and in technology domains. In order to accomplish it, for the translator all the tasks and processes he develops appear as crucial, being pretranslation and posttranslation processes equally important as the translation itself, namely as far as autonomy, reflexive and critical skills are concerned. Finally, the need and relevance for collaborative tasks and networks amongst virtual translation communities, led us to the decision of implementing ePortfolios as a tool to develop the requested skills and extend the use of Internet in translation, namely in terminology management phases, for the completion of each task, by helping students in the management of the projects deadlines, improving their knowledge on the construction and management of translation resources and deepening their awareness about the concepts related to the development and usability of ePorfolios.

Le projet pilote e-Portfolio offre aux étudiant-e-s la possibilité de créer un dossier portfolio personnalisé et disponible en ligne sur une plateforme informatique. Les dossiers portfolio se partagent en deux familles : les dossiers d'apprentissage (a.), permettant de documenter un cheminement d'apprentissage, et les dossiers de présentation(b.), ayant pour rôle de valoriser les acquis d'une formation ou d'un parcours professionnel. Un e-Portfolio, par la plasticité des outils informatiques qui en forment le support, permet de combiner les deux approches - pédagogique et biographique - en intégrant sur un mode dynamique le parcours de formation, le questionnement des acquis et la présentation curriculaire. ePortfolio as a tool for reflexivity and skills' communication : learn how to communicate skills

This paper aims to present an ePortfolio project led for two years in a multilingual and interdisciplinary Master's program in public discourse and communication analysis offered by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). Globally, the project - named Learn to communicate skills - offers a reflection about academic skills and their transferability to the professional world. More precisely, the aim of the project is to make students aware of the importance of reflexive learning to make their skills transferable to other contexts.

ePortfolios in translators’ training and assessment

Translator’s training and assessment has used more and more tools and innovative strategies over the years. The goals and results to achieve haven’t changed much, however: translation quality. In this paper we describe a case-study of a pilot experiment on the using of e-portfolios as a translation training tool and discuss their role in the definition of a clear set of objectives and phases for the completion of each task, by helping students in the management of the projects deadlines, improving their knowledge on the construction and management of translation resources and deepening their awareness about the concepts related to the development of eportfolios.

Integration of e-portfolios in learning management systems

The LMS plays a decisive role in most eLearning environments. Although they integrate many useful tools for managing eLearning activities, they must also be effectively integrated with other specialized systems typically found in an educational environment such as Repositories of Learning Objects or ePortfolio Systems. Both types of systems evolved separately but in recent years the trend is to combine them, allowing the LMS to benefit from using the ePortfolio assessment features. This paper details the most common strategies for integrating an ePortfolio system into an LMS: the data, the API and the tool integration strategies. It presents a comparative study of strategies based on the technical skills, degree of coupling, security features, batch integration, development effort, status and standardization. This study is validated through the integration of two of the most representative systems on each category - respectively Mahara and Moodle.

Dynamique réflexive et transférabilité des compétences : un usage intégré du e-Portfolio en spécialisation

Dernière étape avant le monde professionnel, un cursus de spécialisation est un lieu de discussion, au carrefour des savoirs et des savoir-faire, permettant aux étudiants d'envisager sous un angle nouveau les contenus enseignés à l'université. Il ne s'agit plus seulement d'acquérir des connaissances mais aussi de développer des compétences transférables à d'autres types d'activité. L'équipe en charge de la spécialisation en Analyse du discours et de la communication publics proposée par la Faculté des Lettres de l'Université de Lausanne a oeuvré à l'intégration d'un nouvel outil informatique, le e-Portfolio, destiné à faciliter l'expression et la documentation des compétences individuelles développées par l'étudiant lors de son parcours de formation.

Savoir-faire communicationnels et communication des compétences en Master de spécialisation ès Lettres

Notre article porte sur la mise en oeuvre d'un dispositif de portfolio en ligne (ePortfolio) dans le cadre d'un Master de spécialisation ès lettres en Analyse des discours et de la communication publics. Dans le but d'améliorer la transférabilité de compétences académiques vers les contextes professionnels, l'équipe enseignante de ce Master a créé un ensemble d'activités permettant à l'étudiant de prendre conscience des compétences qu'il a développées et d'apprendre à mieux communiquer celles-ci. La démarche articule deux dimensions : réflexive et communicative. Sur le premier point, le projet se focalise sur le développement de l'attitude réflexive de l'étudiant par rapport à son apprentissage. Sur le second point, le projet se concentre sur le développement d'une aptitude à communiquer ses compétences. Vu la nature du cursus, communiquer à propos de ses compétences reflète précisément des compétences à communiquer et ce type de savoir-faire discursif représente une distinction essentielle par rapport à d'autres filières de formation en communication.

Digital learner portfolio as a tool for inovating assessment in the European Higher Education Area

The present article comes from a doctoral thesis that turns on digital learner portfolio, which is an innovating methodology from the perspective of European Higher Education Area. First, the educative concept of eportfolio is described in the sense of its procedure and its structure, by means of the technological support of a platform of virtual campus. Second, it is shown the pedagogical model of an eportfolio that adapts subjects with an instrumental character to one organization based on tasks and reflections. This design of virtual learning environment is based on a teaching- learning methodology sustained in the activity of the student, which tries to give support to the management of his or her own process of learning and assessment. Finally, the article illustrates the experience of implementation of the first digital learner portfolios in the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, with the objective of reflecting about the pedagogical consequences that this assessment model with technological support has in a traditional higher education institution.

Investigating university students' adaptation to digital learner course portfolio

Digital learner portfolios are of growing importance in higher education as the sector seeks new teaching-learning-assessment methods which promote students" autonomy as managers of their own virtual learning environment. The purpose of this study was to analyse descriptively the undergraduate students" perceptions, attitudes and behaviour when using an eportfolio to support their learning and assessment in practice based courses at two traditional Spanish universities. The participants were 88 students, who were studying through a blended learning mode. Data were collected through questionnaires: a computer experience survey, another which examined the psychological, pedagogical and technological dimensions of eportfolios use. Further, an individual overall reflection was obtained from each student to help gain an understanding of their experiences of using the eportfolio. A mixed-method analysis was applied in order to study the impact of this technological innovation on students and their satisfaction. The results showed that the students had positive opinions and self-efficiency through the eportfolio as a tool to manage their learning and assessment during a semester, especially from the second month of use. However, the expected impact on their learning was not so significant. Nevertheless, the students emphasised that the eportfolio was valuable as a personal developmental learning tool.
