Aggregating Local Descriptors for Epigraphs Recognition

In this paper, we consider the task of recognizing epigraphs in images such as photos taken using mobile devices. Given a set of 17,155 photos related to 14,560 epigraphs, we used a k-NearestNeighbor approach in order to perform the recognition. The contribution of this work is in evaluating state-of-the-art visual object recognition techniques in this specific context. The experimental results conducted show that Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors obtained aggregating SIFT descriptors is the best choice for this task.

Ce mémoire en recherche-création explore l’hybridation identitaire et le désir d’échapper aux attentes normatives. Dans le récit Ce ne sont que des corps, deux étrangers attendent le train en se racontant, en alternance, les événements qui ont marqué les derniers mois de leur vie. Emmanuel, âgé de vingt-cinq ans, s’éprend de Michelle, une femme de tête quinquagénaire rencontrée dans un bar. Cette femme rêve de réaliser certains fantasmes et Emmanuel accepte de se plier au jeu jusqu’à ce que les choses s’enveniment. Quant à Alex, jeune femme dans la vingtaine, elle quitte son village natal pour étudier à Montréal et succombe au charme de Gabriel, un aspirant musicien pour qui elle est prête à tout abandonner. Chacun des personnages de ce roman brouille les identités sexuées et sexuelles. Pour ce qui est de l’essai, il explore la manière dont Nelly Kaplan manipule le sexe et le gender de ses protagonistes pour postuler une « poétique de l’androgynie » dans certaines nouvelles du recueil Le réservoir des sens. L’essai mobilise les ressources des études consacrées à l’ironie, à la poétique surréaliste, au gender ainsi qu’à l’intertextualité pour mettre en évidence la façon dont l’auteure brouille les identités sexuées et sexuelles.

Toward a scholarly edition of Beckett's critical writings

This essay outlines the case for a new, scholarly edition of Beckett's critical writings, one that would be complete and with critical annotation. For the most part these texts (critical writings, tributes, in memoria and epigraphs) have been published in a range of places. As well as in the magazines, newspapers, books and special-issue publications in which pieces originally appeared, a number were collected in Disjecta (Calder 1983 & Grove 1984). This volume, however, is not exhaustive; it misses out a number of important texts (not least Proust) and contains some textual inaccuracies. Furthermore, Beckett's critical writings are currently not available from the UK publishers Faber and the Grove Press Centenary Edition of Beckett's works, the fourth volume of which contains a section entitled ‘Criticism’, presents only three works of criticism by Beckett (Proust, ‘Dante … Bruno . Vico . . Joyce’ and ‘Three Dialogues’). In this essay, we give a brief (and far from exhaustive) overview of the publication history of Beckett's non-fiction prose texts, before outlining some of the editorial challenges they pose. Although Beckett tended to be dismissive of these works, they form an integral part of his canon.

Do teatro Elisabetano ao sertão do século XIX: a presença de Shakespeare em Inocência

The Shakespearean theater is a result of the genius of this playwright alongside the material provided by the period in which they came out the Elizabethan Age. Most of his works bring up themes and elements which keep them up-to-date, arousing an ongoing interest of readers and theatergoers, and also serving as inspiration for other writers to create their own works. Taking these ideas into account, this work aims to bring up questions concerning the presence of Shakespeare in a nineteenth-century Brazilian novel, Inocência, by Viscount of Taunay. In this novel, Taunay makes references to this playwright, using some epigraphs taken from Romeo and Juliet, from which we seek to understand how the novel dialogues with this Shakespearean drama. In order to develop such a study, we take into account some theoretical assumptions of hypertextuality, as proposed by the French scholar Gerard Genette, whose ideas about the dialogue between literary works support the analysis of the relationship between Taunay s novel and the above-referenced play of Shakespeare.

Do periódico ao livro: originalidade da criação literária de Guimarães Rosa em Tutaméia

Este trabalho objetiva analisar o lugar de Tutaméia: terceiras estórias na obra de João Guimarães Rosa. Para tanto, far-se-á uma abordagem dos conceitos da Estética da recepção apresentados por Hans Robert Jauss em suas teses de 1967, que serão o embasamento teórico para a exposição de algumas recepções críticas da obra ao longo de sua trajetória histórica. Os autores utilizados para efetuarem esse diálogo com o texto rosiano foram: Benedito Nunes, Vera Novis, Paulo Rónai. O estudo mais centrado dessa narrativa levará em consideração a análise das principais inovações introduzidas por Guimarães Rosa em Tutaméia, a saber, a extensão e a origem dos contos, o título e o subtítulo da obra, a ordem alfabética do índice e o índice de releitura, a presença das epígrafes e a presença de quatro prefácios. Busca-se também fazer uma inédita comparação hermenêutica e estilística entre a publicação no periódico Pulso e a edição em livro de 1967. Assim, fez-se um recorte dentre os variados temas da obra, elegendo-se para a análise, alguns dos contos que abordam a temática amorosa, sendo eles: “A vela ao Diabo”; “João Porém, o criador de perus” e “Palhaço da boca verde”.

O latim das inscrições romanas em território português até à queda do império

O latim das inscrições romanas no território português não foi até à data alvo de um estudo individualizado. A única obra na qual o assunto foi tratado analisa o latim de toda a Península Ibérica e foi publicada há pouco mais de cem anos, estando desactualizada. As inscrições romanas do território português estão publicadas em diferentes obras. O Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum continua a ser uma referência fundamental, mas, ao longo do século XX, foram publicados novos estudos, que actualizam leituras ou divulgam novas epígrafes. Desta forma, para caracterizar o latim das inscrições romanas no território português, é necessário constituir um corpus que inevitavelmente terá de incluir epígrafes provenientes de diversas publicações. A análise do latim das inscrições compreende aspectos fonéticos, morfológicos, sintácticos e lexicais. São seleccionados apenas aspectos relevantes para o estudo do texto epigráfico. O tratamento de cada um dos aspectos está dividido numa componente teórica, na qual se faz um balanço das conclusões da literatura científica, e numa componente prática, na qual se relatam os dados das inscrições do território português. O latim das inscrições do território português pode ser caracterizado como conservador, predominando nele o respeito pela correcção da língua. Para esta caracterização conservadora, contribui a presença de arcaísmos nas desinências nominais e verbais, alguns no século II. Por outro lado, não deixa de manifestar, à semelhança do latim de outras regiões, nomeadamente de Pompeios, algumas particularidades inovadoras, como a monotongação do ditongo ae ou a oscilação na grafia das vogais. Além destes aspectos, são ainda perceptíveis ténues diferenças internas, visto que há fenómenos documentados apenas em algumas regiões.

Motzkin Decomposable Sets

Theodore Motzkin proved, in 1936, that any polyhedral convex set can be expressed as the (Minkowski) sum of a polytope and a polyhedral convex cone. We have provided several characterizations of the larger class of closed convex sets, Motzkin decomposable, in finite dimensional Euclidean spaces which are the sum of a compact convex set with a closed convex cone. These characterizations involve different types of representations of closed convex sets as the support functions, dual cones and linear systems whose relationships are also analyzed. The obtaining of information about a given closed convex set F and the parametric linear optimization problem with feasible set F from each of its different representations, including the Motzkin decomposition, is also discussed. Another result establishes that a closed convex set is Motzkin decomposable if and only if the set of extreme points of its intersection with the linear subspace orthogonal to its lineality is bounded. We characterize the class of the extended functions whose epigraphs are Motzkin decomposable sets showing, in particular, that these functions attain their global minima when they are bounded from below. Calculus of Motzkin decomposable sets and functions is provided.

Conservare e comunicare l'epigrafia romana: il caso dei lapidari di Regium Lepidi e di Bononia

Il presente lavoro si pone l’obbiettivo di individuare una modalità di comunicazione dell’oggetto epigrafe esposto in museo che superi il modello di trasmissione frontale e didascalico di nozioni e tenga conto della sua polisemia. Come campo di sperimentazione sono stati individuati i lapidari dei Musei Civici di Reggio Emilia, dove è stata completata una ricognizione e schedatura del patrimonio epigrafico di età romana e sono stati progettati strumenti di accompagnamento alla visita, e il Museo Civico Archeologico di Bologna, per il quale si è proceduto alla schedatura di un gruppo di iscrizioni provenienti da un contesto di reimpiego noto come “muro del Reno” e alla stesura di un progetto di mediazione narrativa della collezione lapidari.
