Guaranteeing real-time message deadlines in PROFIBUS networks

The paper provides a comprehensive study on how to use Profibus networks to support real time communications, that is, ensuring the transmission of the real time messages before their deadlines. Profibus is based on a simplified Timed Token (TT) protocol, which is a well proved solution for real time communication systems. However, Profibus differences from the TT protocol prevent the application of the usual TT analysis. The main reason is that, conversely to the TT protocol, in the worst case, only one high priority message is processed per token visit. The major contribution of the paper is to prove that, despite this shortcoming, it is possible to guarantee communication real time behaviour with the Profibus protocol

Dynamic matching and bargaining: the role of deadlines

We consider a dynamic model where traders in each period are matched randomly into pairs who then bargain about the division of a fixed surplus. When agreement is reached the traders leave the market. Traders who do not come to an agreement return next period in which they will be matched again, as long as their deadline has not expired yet. New traders enter exogenously in each period. We assume that traders within a pair know each other's deadline. We define and characterize the stationary equilibrium configurations. Traders with longer deadlines fare better than traders with short deadlines. It is shown that the heterogeneity of deadlines may cause delay. It is then shown that a centralized mechanism that controls the matching protocol, but does not interfere with the bargaining, eliminates all delay. Reasoning about deadlines in concurrent real-time programs

We propose a method for the timing analysis of concurrent real-time programs with hard deadlines. We divide the analysis into a machine-independent and a machine-dependent task. The latter takes into account the execution times of the program on a particular machine. Therefore, our goal is to make the machine-dependent phase of the analysis as simple as possible. We succeed in the sense that the machine-dependent phase remains the same as in the analysis of sequential programs. We shift the complexity introduced by concurrency completely to the machine-independent phase.

A importância do programa preliminar e do projecto no âmbito da contratação pública

O Código dos contratos públicos (CCP) veio introduzir alguns novos conceitos, nas empreitadas de obras públicas, sobre erros e omissões e também sobre trabalhos a mais. Tais conceitos têm estado na origem de algumas polémicas envolvendo donos de obra, projectistas, fiscalizações, empreiteiros e técnicos. Por outro, quer à luz da anterior legislação quer ao abrigo da actual os desvios de preço e prazo, em empreitadas de obras públicas, continuam a ser frequentes, dir-se-á mesmo, praticamente uma constante e frequentemente alvo nos meios de comunicação. No âmbito desta dissertação pretende-se partilhar algumas reflexões emergentes da observação efectuada, como participante activo em diversos empreendimentos. Verificar-se-á ao longo da mesma dissertação que nela é atribuída grande relevância ao programa preliminar constante do Anexo I à Portaria n.º 701-H/2008 de 29 de Julho, que dá origem ao projecto. Com efeito, este documento embora a sua designação de preliminar possa induzir em erro, levando a conferir-lhe pouca importância, é, em boa verdade, o programa fundamental, para um bom entendimento entre o dono de obra e o projectista e subsequentemente com o empreiteiro. Nesta dissertação faz-se uma incursão pelos conteúdos mais relevantes do CCP, no âmbito dos desvios de preço e custo, das empreitadas de obras públicas. Procede-se, também, a uma análise detalhada e sequencial das fases e actividades que contribuem para a concretização de uma obra pública, observando simultaneamente o papel dos diversos intervenientes.

Enhancing reflexivity and technology in translation learning: case study on the use of ePortfolio as a training environment

In this paper we describe a casestudy of an experiment on how reflexivity and technology can enhance learning, by using ePorfolios as a training environment to develop translation skills. Translation is today a multiskilled job and translators need to assure their clients a good performance and quality, both in language and in technology domains. In order to accomplish it, for the translator all the tasks and processes he develops appear as crucial, being pretranslation and posttranslation processes equally important as the translation itself, namely as far as autonomy, reflexive and critical skills are concerned. Finally, the need and relevance for collaborative tasks and networks amongst virtual translation communities, led us to the decision of implementing ePortfolios as a tool to develop the requested skills and extend the use of Internet in translation, namely in terminology management phases, for the completion of each task, by helping students in the management of the projects deadlines, improving their knowledge on the construction and management of translation resources and deepening their awareness about the concepts related to the development and usability of ePorfolios.

ePortfolios in translators’ training and assessment

In order to accomplish it, the translator and all the tasks and processes he develops appear as crucial, being pre-translation and post-translation processes equally important as the translation itself, namely as far as autonomy, reflexive and critical skills are concerned. Finally, the need and relevance of collaborative tasks and networks amongst virtual translation communities, led us to the decision of implementing ePortfolios as a tool to develop the requested skills and extend the use of Internet in translation. In this paper we describe a case-study of a pilot experiment on the using of e-portfolios as a translation training tool and discuss their role in the definition of a clear set of objectives and phases for the completion of each task, by helping students in the management of the projects deadlines, improving their knowledge on the construction and management of translation resources and deepening their awareness about the concepts related to the development of eportfolios.

Deterioração e reabilitação de estruturas de betão armado

Apesar da enorme evolução tecnológica, os prazos na construção são cada vez mais reduzidos e os custos mais controlados, verificando-se uma despreocupação no que diz respeito a aspetos como a qualidade e durabilidade da construção das estruturas. Desperta assim nos técnicos, donos-de-obra, entidades executantes e projetistas a necessidade de avaliar o estado de conservação das estruturas de betão armado. Esta dissertação tem como objetivo principal abordar as anomalias e os mecanismos de deterioração mais correntes, os métodos de ensaio destrutivos ou parcialmente destrutivos mais utilizados e adequados, e abordar algumas das técnicas de reparação e reforço das estruturas de betão armado. Os principais danos apresentados nas estruturas são devidos a agentes físicos, mecânicos, biológicos e químicos. Podem ser devidos a causas diretas (acidentais ou naturais), que acarretam uma ação concreta sobre os elementos estruturais, e causas indiretas (humanas), diretamente ligadas com erros de projeto. É primordial fazer-se o levantamento de todas as anomalias existentes para se recorrer a um método de inspeção e ensaio. Consoante a necessidade de informação e estado da estrutura são selecionados os ensaios a realizar, podendo ser realizados “in situ” ou em laboratório. As técnicas de reparação e reforço são vistas como métodos para melhorar as condições da estrutura ao nível da segurança, desempenho, habitabilidade e durabilidade, prevenindo a evolução dos mecanismos de deterioração.
