(eta-5-C5H5)2YbCl.THF reacts with an equivalent molecular quantity of K(2,4-C7H11) (2,4-dimethyl pentadienyl potassium), and treatment of the product with DME yields (eta-5-C5H5)2Yb.DME. The crystal of (eta-5-C5H5)2Yb.DME belongs to the orthorhombic space group Fdd2 with a = 13.678(4) angstrom, b = 23.255(6) angstrom, c = 9.192(2) angstrom and Z = 8. The crystal parameters are found to differ from previously reported data.

An imidosamarium(III) cubane has been prepared from the reductive cleavage of azobenzene by a divalent samarium bis (amidinate) complex, indicating that the "spectratoe" bis(amidinate) and the resulting imido ligands help to stabilize the cubane framework. The cubane-type imido cluster is a novel unit in lanthanide chemistry.

The terbium complex supported by beta-diketiminate was synthesized and structurally characterized. Due to an efficient energy transfer from the ligand to the central Tb3+, this complex shows a strong emission corresponding to Tb3+5D4-F-7(J) (J = 6,5,4,3) transitions, with D-5(4)-F-7(5) (550 nm) green emission as the most prominent group. The decay behavior of Tb3+ luminescence depends strongly on the excitation wavelengths.

Reaction of 3-(2-pyridylmethyl)indenyl lithium (1) with LnI(2)(THF)(2) (Ln = Sm, Yb) in THF produced the divalent organolanthanides (C5H4NCH2C9H6)(2)Ln(II)(THF) (Ln = Sm (2), Yb (3)) in high yield. 1 reacts with LnCl(3) (Ln = Nd, Sm, Yb) in THF to give bis(3-(2-pyridylmethyl)indenyl) lanthanide chlorides (C5H4NCH2C9H6)(2)Ln(III)Cl (Ln = Nd (4), Sm (5)) and the unexpected divalent lanthanides 3 (Ln = Yb). Complexes 2-5 show more stable in air than the non-functionalized analogues. X-ray structural analyses of 2-4 were performed. 2 and 3 belong to the high symmetrical space group (Cmcm) with the same structures, they are THF-solvated 9-coordinate monomeric in the solid state, while 4 is an unsolvated 9-coordinate monomer with a trans arrangement of both the side-arms and indenyl rings in the solid state. Additionally, 2 and 3 show moderate polymerization activities for F-caprolactone (CL).

It has been established that 6-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridines (R,hemi-BTPs) have properties which are intermediate between those of the terpyridines and the bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridines (BTPs). However, they resemble the terpyridines much more closely than the BTPs. It has been shown that Et, hemi-BTP when dissolved in TPH-a dodecane-like solvent-is a selective reagent for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III). Solution NMR in acetonitrile largely confirmed the crystallographic results. There was no evidence for a 1 : 3 complex cation, or for significant differences between metal(III)-N distances for the pyridine and 1,2,4-triazine rings. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a crucial role in the formation of metal coordination spheres, which explains the differences between the terpyridyl, R,hemi-BTPs and the BTPs. Protonation of the R,hemi-BTPs facilitates a conformational change which is necessary for complexation.

Significant cleavage by hammerhead ribozymes requires activation by divalent metal ions. Several models have been proposed to account for the influence of metal ions on hammerhead activity. A number of recent papers have presented data that have been interpreted as supporting a one-metal-hydroxide-ion mechanism. In addition, a solvent deuterium isotope effect has been taken as evidence against a proton transfer in the rate-limiting step of the cleavage reaction. We propose that these data are more easily explained by a two-metal-ion mechanism that does not involve a metal hydroxide, but does involve a proton transfer in the rate-limiting step.

We investigate the evolution of electronic structure with dimensionality (d) of Ni-O-Ni connectivity in divalent nickelates, NiO (3-d), La2NiO4, Pr2NiO4 (2-d), Y2BaNiO5 (1-d) and Lu2BaNi5 (0-d), by analyzing the valence band and the Ni 2p core-level photoemission spectra in conjunction with detailed many-body calculations including full multiplet interactions. Experimental results exhibit a reduction in the intensity of correlation-induced satellite features with decreasing dimensionality. The calculations based on the cluster model, but evaluating both Ni 3d and O 2p related photoemission processes on the same footing, provide a consistent description of both valence-band and core-level spectra in terms of various interaction strengths. While the correlation-induced satellite features in NiO is dominated by poorly screened d(8) states as described in the existing literature, we find that the satellite features in the nickelates with lower dimensional Ni-O-Ni connectivity are in fact dominated by the over-screened d(10)L(2) states. It is found that the changing electronic structure with the dimensionality is primarily driven by two factors: (i) a suppression of the nonlocal contribution to screening; and (ii) a systematic decrease of the charge-transfer energy Delta driven by changes in the Madelung potential. Lanthanide coordination complexes with unidentate and bidentate amide ligands have been widely reported in the literature[l].In contrast, however, coordination compounds with tridentate ligands and with ligands containing ether oxygen as donor atoms to lanthanides have received little attention. In this paper we report the preparation and characterization of complexes formed by the interaction of the lanthanide perchlorates with N, N, N', N'- tetramethyloxydiacetamide (TMODA). The new complexes have been characterized by analysis, conductance, IR and electronic spectra. In addition, ~H and '3C NMR spectra of the ligand and its diamagnetic La ~+ and y3+ complexes are also discussed.

New lanthanide complexes of salicylaldehyde-Schiff bases with salicyloyl hydrazide and anthranilic acid, were synthesized by a novel method consisting of refluxing the mixtures of Schiff base ligands and lanthanide trichloroacetate in acetone. Solid complexes of formulae Ln(SHSASB)s*2Hz0 and Ln2(AASASB)s*2Hz0 where Ln = La-Yb and Y, were isolated. Proton NMR and IR spectra for the complexes reveal the bidentate binding of both the Schiff base ligands to the lanthanide ion. Electronic spectra along with the conductance data for the complexes indicate a coordination number of six for the lanthanide ion in the complexes of both the Schiff bases.

Complexes of lanthanide perchlorates with the ligand N,N,N,N-tetra-methyl-3,6,9-trioxaundecane diamide (TUD) of the composition Ln(TUD)2-(ClO4)3 (Ln triple bond; length as m-dash La, Nd, Ho, Er, Y) were isolated. Electrical conductivity values indicate that all the perchlorate groups are ionic. IR and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C) data prove that the ligand coordinates to the metal via the three ether oxygens and the two carbonyl oxygens. A probable coordination number of ten can be assigned for all the complexes.
