A novel and environment friendly analytical method is reported for total chromium determination and chromium speciation in water samples, whereby tungsten coil atomic emission spectrometry (WCAES) is combined with in situ ionic liquid formation dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (in situ IL-DLLME). A two stage multivariate optimization approach has been developed employing a Plackett–Burman design for screening and selection of the significant factor involved in the in situ IL-DLLME procedure, which was later optimized by means of a circumscribed central composite design. The optimum conditions were complexant concentration: 0.5% (or 0.1%); complexant type: DDTC; IL anion: View the MathML sourcePF6−; [Hmim][Cl] IL amount: 60 mg; ionic strength: 0% NaCl; pH: 5 (or 2); centrifugation time: 10 min; and centrifugation speed: 1000 rpm. Under the optimized experimental conditions the method was evaluated and proper linearity was obtained with a correlation coefficient of 0.991 (5 calibration standards). Limits of detection and quantification for both chromium species were 3 and 10 µg L−1, respectively. This is a 233-fold improvement when compared with chromium determination by WCAES without using preconcentration. The repeatability of the proposed method was evaluated at two different spiking levels (10 and 50 µg L−1) obtaining coefficients of variation of 11.4% and 3.6% (n=3), respectively. A certified reference material (SRM-1643e NIST) was analyzed in order to determine the accuracy of the method for total chromium determination and 112.3% and 2.5 µg L−1 were the recovery (trueness) and standard deviation values, respectively. Tap, bottled mineral and natural mineral water samples were analyzed at 60 µg L−1 spiking level of total Cr content at two Cr(VI)/Cr(III) ratios, and relative recovery values ranged between 88% and 112% showing that the matrix has a negligible effect. To our knowledge, this is the first time that combines in situ IL-DLLME and WCAES.

A flow injection analysis (FIA) procedure for the speciation of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) using the 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) method is presented. As Cr(III) does not interfere in the Cr(VI) - DPC reaction, both Cr(VI) and total chromium [after the on-line oxidation of Cr(III) by Ce(IV)] are sequentially determined. Cr(III) is obtained by difference. Under the experimental conditions described, the calibration graphs are linear up to 2 μg mh1 of Cr(VI) and 4 μg ml-1 of Cr(III). The detection limits found were 18 ng ml -1 for Cr(VI) and 55 ng ml-1 for Cr(III), at a signal to noise ratio of 3. The common interfering elements in the Cr(VI) - DPC reaction were investigated under dynamic FIA conditions. The FIA method was also compared with the conventional spectrophotometric procedure.

A rapid and sensitive method for separation and determination of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) in bottom mud of lake by flow injection on-line preconcentrtion system and GFAAS was developed. The available Cr(VI) and Cr(III) were extracted by HOAc or EDTA + NH4 NO3 and adsorbed simultaneously by an anion and a cation resin microclummn and then eluted simultaneously by 2 mol/L NH4 NO3 + 0.05 mol/L ascorbate and 2 mol/L H2SO4, respectively. The elution was performed for 50 s after adsorption for 2 min, and the efficiencies of elution were 85.4% - 94.8% and 96.7% - 106% for Cr(VI) and Cr(M) respectively. The detection limits of the method were 0.9 mu g/L and 2.7 mu g/L with relative standard deviations of 3.5% and 6.4% for the determination of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) in sample, respectively.

A plasticized Cr3+ ion sensor by incorporating 2,3,8,9-tetraphenyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododeca-1,3,7,9-tetraene (TTCT) ionophore exhibits a good potentiometric response for Cr3+ over a wide concentration range (1.0×10-6-1.0×10-1 M) with a slope of 19.5 mV per decade. The sensor response is stable for at least three months. Good selectivity for Cr3+ in comparison with alkali, alkaline earth, transition and heavy metal ions, and minimal interference are caused by Li+, Na+, K+, Co2+, Hg2+, Ca2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions, which are known to interfere with other chromium membrane sensors. The TTCT-based electrode shows a fast response time (15 s), and can be used in aqueous solutions of pH 3 - 5.5. The proposed sensor was used for the potentiometric titration of Cr3+ with EDTA and for a direct potentiometric determination of Cr3+ content in environmental samples.

A new chemiluminescence(CL) system for the determination of ascorbic acid has been established. By the fast reduction reaction between chromium(VI) and ascorbic acid, chromium(M was generated to react with luminol and hydrogen peroxide in alkaline aqueous solution and hydrogen peroxide to produce CL. The CL emission intensity was correlated with ascorbic acid concentration in the range 8.0 x 10(-9) to 1.6 x 10(-4) mol/L, and the detection limit was 8.0 x 10(-9) mol/L ascorbic acid. The relative standard deviation (n = 11) for 1.0 x 10(-6) mol/L ascorbic acid is 0.9%. The method has been applied to the determination of ascorbic acid in vitamin C tablets with satisfactory results.

The chromium(II) antimony(III) sulphicle, [Cr((NH2CH2CH2)(3)N)]Sb4S7, was synthesised under solvothermal conditions from the reaction of Sb2S3. Cr and S dissolved in tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) at 438 K. The products were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. elemental analysis, SQUID magnetometry and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The compound crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 7.9756(7), b = 10.5191(9), c = 25.880(2) angstrom and beta = 90.864(5)degrees. Alternating SbS33- trigonal pyramids and Sb36 semi-cubes generate Sb4S72- chains which are directly bonded to Cr(tren pendant units. The effective magnetic moment of 4.94(6)mu(B) shows a negligible orbital contribution, in agreement with expectations for Cr(II):d(4) in a (5)A ground state. The measured band gap of 2.14(3) eV is consistent with a correlation between optical band gap and framework density that is established from analysis of a wide range of antimony sulphides. This paper reports a method for the direct and simultaneous determination of Cr and Mn in alumina by slurry sampling graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (SiS-SIMAAS) using niobium carbide (NbC) as a graphite platform modifier and sodium fluoride (NaF) as a matrix modifier. 350 mu g of Nb were thermally deposited on the platform surface allowing the formation of NbC (mp 3500 degrees C) to minimize the reaction between aluminium and carbon of the pyrolytic platform, improving the graphite tube lifetime up to 150 heating cycles. A solution of 0.2 mol L(-1) NaF was used as matrix modifier for alumina dissolution as cryolite-based melt, allowing volatilization during pyrolysis step. Masses (c.a. 50 mg) of sample were suspended in 30 ml of 2.0% (v/v) of HNO(3). Slurry was manually homogenized before sampling. Aliquots of 20 mu l of analytical solutions and slurry samples were co-injected into the graphite tube with 20 mu l of the matrix modifier. In the best conditions of the heating program, pyrolysis and atomization temperatures were 1300 degrees C and 2400 degrees C, respectively. A step of 1000 degrees C was optimized allowing the alumina dissolution to form cryolite. The accuracy of the proposed method has been evaluated by the analysis of standard reference materials. The found concentrations presented no statistical differences compared to the certified values at 95% of the confidence level. Limits of detection were 66 ng g(-1) for Cr and 102 ng g(-1) for Mn and the characteristic masses were 10 and 13 pg for Cr and Mn, respectively.

One method using a solid sampling device for the direct determination of Cr and Ni in fresh and used lubricating oils by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry are proposed. The high organic content in the samples was minimized using a digestion step at 400 degrees C in combination with an oxidant mixture 1.0% (v v(-1)) HNO3+15% (v v(-1)) H2O2+0.1% (m v(-1)) Triton X-100 for the in situ digestion. The 3-field mode Zeeman-effect allowed the spectrometer calibration up to 5 ng of Cr and Ni. The quantification limits were 0.86 mu g g(-1) for Cr and 0.82 mg g(-1) for Ni, respectively. The analysis of reference materials showed no statistically significant difference between the recommended values and those obtained by the proposed methods.

This paper presents a simple, fast and sensitive method to determine chromic oxide (used as a biological marker of fish feed) in samples of fish feces by GFAAS through the direct introduction of slurries of the samples into the spectrometer's graphite tube. The standard samples of feces and of fish feed containing 0.10-1.00 mg kg(-1) of Cr2O3 were pre-frozen for I min in liquid nitrogen and then ground a cryogenic mill for 2 min, which reduced the samples' grain size to less than 60 mu m. The standard slurries were prepared by mixing 20 mg of standard samples of fish feed or feces with I mL of a solution containing 0.05% (v/v) of Triton X-100 and 0.50% (v/v) of suprapure HNO3 directly in the spectrometer's automatic sampling glass. The final concentrations of Cr2O3 present in the standard slurries were 2, 4, 8, 16 and 20 mu g L-1. After sonicating the mixture for 20s, 10 mu L of standard slurries were injected into the graphite tube, whose internal wall was lined with a metallic palladium film that acted as a permanent chemical modifier. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) calculated for 20 readings of the blank of the standard slurries (2%, m/v of feces or feed devoid of minerals) were 0.81 and 2.70 mu g L-1 of Cr2O3 for the standard feces slurries, 0.84 and 2.83 mu g L-1 of Cr2O3 for the standard feed slurries. The proposed method was applied in studies of nutrient digestibility of different fish feeds and its results proved compatible with the results obtained from samples pre-mineralized by acid digestion. Screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with poly-L-histidine film can be successfully applied for chromium(VI) determination based on its pre-concentration. Optimum adherence and stability of the POIY-L-histidine film was obtained by direct addition of PH solution 1% (w/v) on the electrode surface, followed by heating at 80 degrees C during 5 min. Linear response range, sensitivity and limit of detection were 0. 1-150 [mu mol L-1, 4. 13 LA mu mol L` and 0.046 mu mol L-1. The repeatability of the proposed sensor, evaluated in terms of relative standard deviation, was measured as 3.2% for 10 experiments in 40 mu mol L-1 using the same electrode and 4.0% using screen-printed electrode as disposable sensor, respectively. The voltammetric sensor was applied to determination of Cr(VI) and indirect determination of Cr(III) in wastewater samples previously treated by a leather dyeing industry and the average recovery for these samples was around 97%. The present work reports the use of a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified by poly-L-histidine film to determine chromium (VI). Stable films can be formed by direct addition of PH solution 1 % (w/v) on the electrode surface, followed by heating at 80°C during 5 min. Calibration curves can be constructed for Cr(VI) from 1.0 × 10-5 mol L-1 to 7.0 × 10-5 mol L-1 Cr (VI) in acetate buffer pH 4 using a preconcentration step of 60s at open circuit potential. A relative standard deviation of 3.2% was for five determination of 4.0 × 10 -5 mol L-1 Cr (VI). The method was successful applied to determination of Cr(VI) in wastewater samples from a leather dyeing industry. copyright The Electrochemical Society.

It is well known that the microcrack density is a fundamental parameter in hard chromium electroplating. The chemical and mechanical properties of this coating are widely dependent on its microcrack density. In this paper a simple image analysis procedure to determine microcrack density is presented in order to demonstrate it as a fundamental tool to estimate the fatigue, corrosion and wear behavior, as well as the residual stress field of a coated component. For this purpose, the image analysis procedure was carried out on two kinds of hard chromium plating - one called accelerated (high velocity of deposition and fluoride-free) and the other conventional (with fluoride). The coatings were applied on samples of AISI 4340 aeronautical steel, which is widely used in aircraft landing gear components. To characterize the practical significance of this study, the microcrack density results were related to the fatigue, wear and corrosion behavior from previous study and to the residual stress field in the coatings.
