The larger chemical shift of cerium compounds was discoveried. The chemical states of the cerium compounds were identified by the chemical shifts of Auger energy. The changes in Anger energy and parameters are principally due to the changes in extra-atomic relaxation or polarization energy. The increase of the polarizable properties in anions of cerium compounds corresponds to the increase of Auger energy and parameter. The Auger parameter can be measured more accurately. Ce(CF3COO)(x)Cl-3-x was also studied by ESCA. It is shown that the electron density at cerium atom increases with the increase of x, while the electron density at oxygen atom decreases.

The bonding and the 4f orbital effect of lanthanide elements at different valence state in their compounds have been studied by INDO method in this paper. The results obtained show that the bonding of lanthanide compounds is affected by many factors, such as valence state, ionic radius, ligand, coordinate number, space configuration etc. The strength of bonds composed of different ligands with lanthanide is distinctly different. The covalence of Ln-L bonds of lanthanide ions at high valence state in their compounds is larger than that at low valence state, The covalency at low coordinate number is larger than that at high coordinate number. Some lanthanide compounds with special configuration, besides sigma-bond, can form p(pi)-d(pi) dative bond with much overlap, which makes the Ln-L bond increase markedly. The effect of 4f orbitals on bonding is far less than that of 5d orbitals. The Ln 4f orbitals at 3 or 2 valence state may be considered to be essentially localized, while the contribution of 4f orbitals on bonding in 4 valent cerium compounds increases obviously, up to 1%.

This work studied the degradation of dipyrone, via electrochemical processes and via electro-Fenton reaction using a 4% CeO2/C gas diffusion electrode (GDE) prepared via modified polymeric precursor method. This material was used to electrochemically generate H2O2 through oxygen reduction. The mean crystallite sizes estimated by the Scherrer equation for 4% CeO2/C were 4 nm for CeO2-x (0 4 4) and 5 nm for CeO2 (1 1 1) while using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) the mean nanoparticle size was 5.4 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements revealed nearly equal concentrations of Ce(III) and Ce(IV) species on carbon, which contained high oxygenated acid species like CO and OCO. Electrochemical degradation using Vulcan XC 72R carbon showed that the dipyrone was not removed during the two hour electrolysis in all applied potentials by electro-degradation. Besides, when the Fenton process was employed the degradation was much similar when using cerium catalysts but the mineralization reaches just to 50% at -1.1 V. However, using the CeO2/C GDE, in 20 min all of the dipyrone was degraded with 26% mineralization at -1.3 V and when the Fenton process was employed, all of the dipyrone was removed after 5 min with 57% mineralization at -1.1 V. Relative to Vulcan XC72R, ceria acts as an oxygen buffer leading to an increase in the local oxygen concentration, facilitating H2O2 formation and consequently improving the dipyrone degradation © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The electrochemistry of homoleptic substituted phthalocyaninato rare earth double-decker complexes M(TBPc)2 and M(OOPc)2 [M = Y, La...Lu except Pm; H2TBPc = 3(4),12(13),21(22),30(31)-tetra-tert-butylphthalocyanine, H2OOPc = 3,4,12,13,21,22,30,31-octakis(octyloxy)phthalocyanine] has been comparatively studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in CH2Cl2 containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP). Two quasi-reversible one-electron oxidations and three or four quasi-reversible one-electron reductions have been revealed for these neutral double-deckers of two series of substituted complexes, respectively. For comparison, unsubstituted bis(phthalocyaninato) rare earth analogues M(Pc)2 (M = Y, La...Lu except Pm; H2Pc = phthalocyanine) have also been electrochemically investigated. Two quasi-reversible one-electron oxidations and up to five quasi-reversible one-electron reductions have been revealed for these neutral double-decker compounds. The three bis(phthalocyaninato)cerium compounds display one cerium-centered redox wave between the first ligand-based oxidation and reduction. The half-wave potentials of the first and second oxidations and first reduction for double-deckers of the tervalent rare earths depend on the size of the metal center. The difference between the redox potentials of the second and third reductions for MIII(Pc)2, which represents the potential difference between the first oxidation and first reduction of [MIII(Pc)2]−, lies in the range 1.08−1.37 V and also gradually diminishes along with the lanthanide contraction, indicating enhanced π−π interactions in the double-deckers connected by the smaller, lanthanides. This corresponds well with the red-shift of the lowest energy band observed in the electronic absorption spectra of reduced double-decker [MIII(Pc′)2]− (Pc′ = Pc, TBPc, OOPc).

The microstructures of the quenched melts of samples of Y123 and Y123+15-20 mol% Y211 with PtO2 and CeO2 additives have been examined with optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray Diffractometry (XRD). Significantly higher temperatures are required for the formation of dendritic or lamellar eutectic patterns throughout the samples with PtO2 and CeO2 additives as compared to samples without additives. The BaCuO2 (BCl) phase appears first in solid form and, instead of rapidly melting, is slowly dissolving or decomposing in the oxygen depleted melt. PtO2 and CeO2 additives slow down or shift to higher temperatures the dissolution or decomposition process of BCl. A larger fraction of BCl in solid form explains why samples with additives have higher viscosities and hence lower diffusivities than samples without additives. There is also a reduction in the Y solubility to about half the value in samples without additives. The mechanism that limits the Ostwald ripening of the Y211 particles is correlated to the morphology of the quenched partial melt. It is diffusion controlled for a finely mixed morphology and interface-controlled when the melt quenches into dendritic or lamellar eutectic patterns. The change in the morphology of the Y211 particles from blocky to acicular is related to an equivalent undercooling of the Y-Ba-Cu-O partial melt, particularly through the crystallization of BCl.

Density-functional theory calculations have been carried out to systematically study single surface oxygen vacancies on CeO2(111). It is surprisingly found that multiple structures with the two excess electrons localized at different positions can exist. We show that the origin of the multiconfigurations of 4f electrons is a result of geometric relaxation on the surface and strong localization characteristic of 4f electrons in ceria. The importance of 4f electron structures is also presented and discussed. These results may possess implications for our understanding of materials with f electrons.

Cerium carbonate hydroxide (orthorhombic Ce(OH)CO3) hexagonal-shaped microplates were synthesized by a simple and fast microwave-hydrothermal method at 150 degrees C for 30 min. Cerium nitrate, urea and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide were used as precursors. Ceria (cubic CeO2) rhombus-shape was obtained by a thermal decomposition oxidation process at 500 degrees C for 1 h using as- synthesized Ce(OH)CO3. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. The use of microwave-hydrothermal method allowed to obtain cerium compounds at low temperature and shorter time compared to other synthesis methods. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper evaluated the critical level, responsivity and boron use effciency on growth and the biomass production in six Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla clones (Ca, Cb, Cc, Cd, Ce and Cf). An experiment was carried out in pots containing ground silicon, under greenhouse conditions using four boron rates per solution (0; 0.135; 0.27; 0.54 mg L -1 of B). The treatments were combined in a randomized block experimental design in a 4 × 6 factorial scheme with three replications. Plant height, stem diameter, dry matter production in the shoots of the plant and boron use effciency in the leaves, stem and total dry matter at the 8th month of age were evaluated. Due to boron fertilization, growth and shoot biomass were observed in the Eucalyptus plants after 240 days of being planted in pots. The increases in growth and biomass were 35 to 54% and 21 to 64%, respectively. The boron rates that promoted major growth of the plants were 0.33 to 0.44 mg L -1 of B and in this range the most effcient clone for dry matter production of leaves was Cf and the least effcient one to stem biomass production and the shoot biomass was Cd, no signifcant differences among other clones were observed. The critical level of boron in solution was 0.09 to 0.24 mg L -1 of B in the growth of the plants.

An investigation on the sinterization of Gd:CeO2 (Ce 0.85Gd0.15O1.9-δ ceramic system) 3-10 nm nanoparticles in pressed bodies was done. The heating rate was taken as a key parameter and two competing sinterization processes were identified, associated with different diffusional mechanisms. Using heating rates of 113 C min -1, a high-final density (98 % of the theoretical) was obtained by superposing the two aforementioned mechanisms, resulting in a homogeneous microstructure at lower temperatures. © 2012 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

Cystalline ceria (CeO2) nanoparticles have been synthesized by a simple and fast microwave-assisted hydrothermal (MAH) under NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH mineralizers added to a cerium ammonium nitrate aqueous solution. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transformed-IR and Raman spectroscopies. Rietveld refinement reveals a cubic structure with a space group Fm3m while infrared data showed few traces of nitrates. Field emission scanning microcopy (FEG-SEM) revealed a homogeneous size distribution of nanometric CeO2 nanoparticles. The MAH process in KOH and NaOH showed most effective to dehydrate the adsorbed water and decrease the hydrogen bonding effect leaving a weakly agglomerated powder of hydrated ceria. TEM micrographs of CeO2 synthesized under MAH conditions reveal particles well-dispersed and homogeneously distributed. The MAH enabled cerium oxide to be synthesized at 100 °C for 8 min. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Thermal and spectroscopic studies on solid trivalent lanthanides and yttrium(III) α-hydroxyisobutyrates, Ln(C4H7O 3)3·nH2O were investigated employing simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), elemental analysis, X-ray diffractometry, complexometry, experimental and theoretical infrared spectroscopy and TG-DSC coupled to FTIR. The dehydration of lanthanum to neodymium and terbium to thulium and yttrium compounds occurs in a single step while for samarium, europium and gadolinium ones it occurs in three consecutives steps. Ytterbium and lutetium compounds were obtained in the anhydrous state. The thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occursin two consecutives steps, except lanthanum (five steps) and cerium (single step), with formation of the respective oxides CeO2, Pr6O 11, Tb4O7 and Ln2O3 (Ln = La, Nd to Lu and Y), as final residue. The resultsalso provided information concerning the composition, thermal behavior, crystallinity and gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition. The theoretical and experimental spectroscopic data suggested the possible modes of coordination of the ligand with the lanthanides.© 2013 Elsevier B.V.

A solid state system having the configuration WO 3/Ormolyte/CeO2-TiO2 has been assembled. Syntheses routes for tungsten oxide WO3, and cerium-titanium CeO 2-TiO2 oxide sols, were developed. A novel solid electrolyte - Ormolyte is reported, which were obtained by the sol-gel process, they have a chemical stability due to the covalent bonds between the inorganic and organic phase, and were prepared with different [O]/[L] ratios, being the best for [O]/[L]=15. The variation of transmittance of the electrochromic device using the ormolyte [O]/[L]=15 was 35% (colored state) and 77% (bleached state).
