The reaction of the Schiff base (3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (H3L) with a copper(II) salt of a base of a strong acid, i.e., nitrate, chloride or sulphate, yielded the mononuclear complexes [Cu(H2L)(NO3)(H2O)] (1), [Cu(H2L)Cl]center dot 2MeOH (2) and the binuclear complex [{Cu(H2L)}(2)(mu-SO4)]center dot 2MeOH (3), respectively, with H2L- in the keto form. Compounds 1-3 were characterized by elemental analysis, Infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Electrospray Ionisation-Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) and single crystal X-ray crystallography. All compounds act as efficient catalysts towards the peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexyl hydroperoxide, cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone, under mild conditions. In the presence of an acid promoter, overall yields (based on the alkane) up to 25% and a turnover number (TON) of 250 (TOF of 42 h(-1)) after 6 h, were achieved.

Three types of metal-containing molecular sieves with AFI, AEL and CHA structures (Me = Co, Mn, Cr and V) were synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by XRD, XRF, TG, TPR, NH3-TPD and FT-IR. It was revealed that metals were incorporated into the framework of molecular sieves and induced the presence of charge centers. Both cobalt and manganese in the framework of AIPO-5, AlPO-11 and SAPO-34 were not reducible before the structure collapse. The redox behaviours of these catalysts in cyclohexane oxidation at 403 K using O-2 as oxidant were examined. CoAPO-11 exhibited best activity and good selectivities for the monofunctional oxidation products (88.5%). Cyclohexanol was the major product over most catalysts, whereas for Cr-containing molecular sieves, high selectivity of cyclohexanone was observed. Investigation of reaction mechanism based on CoAPO-11 and CrAPO-5 catalysts indicated that the decomposition of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide (CHHP), the intermediate in cyclohexane oxidation, followed the pathway: cyclohexanone <-- CHHP --> cyclohexanol -->cyclohexanone. The selective oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone is an important chemical process and it has been paid more attentions recently. In the present work, the stainless steel reactor wall was found to influence the selective oxidation of cyclohexane very significantly, and a quasi-crystalline Ti45Zr35Ni17Cu3 alloy with the similar compositions as the reactor wall was used as a catalyst for the cyclohexane oxidation, as expected, a higher activity was obtained with it. The present results open up a new avenue for developing new catalyst for alkane oxidation.

Co3O4 nanocrystals with average particle sizes of 30 and 50 run were synthesized using cobalt nitrate as precursor, and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Catalytic oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen was studied over Co3O4 nanocrystals. These catalysts showed obviously higher activities as compared to Co3O4 prepared by the conventional methods, Co3O4/Al2O3, or homogeneous cobalt catalyst under comparable reaction conditions. The 89.1% selectivity to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone at 7.6% conversion of cyclohexane was realized over 50 nm sized Co3O4 nanocrystals at 393 K for 6 h. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. [CoCl(-Cl)(Hpz(Ph))(3)](2) (1) and [CoCl2(Hpz(Ph))(4)] (2) were obtained by reaction of CoCl2 with HC(pz(Ph))(3) and Hpz(Ph), respectively (Hpz(Ph)=3-phenylpyrazole). The compounds were isolated as air-stable solids and fully characterized by IR and far-IR spectroscopy, MS(ESI+/-), elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry (CV), controlled potential electrolysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies showed that 1 and 2 undergo single-electron irreversible (CoCoIII)-Co-II oxidations and (CoCoI)-Co-II reductions at potentials measured by CV, which also allowed, in the case of dinuclear complex 1, the detection of electronic communication between the Co centers through the chloride bridging ligands. The electrochemical behavior of models of 1 and 2 were also investigated by density functional theory (DFT) methods, which indicated that the vertical oxidation of 1 and 2 (that before structural relaxation) affects mostly the chloride and pyrazolyl ligands, whereas adiabatic oxidation (that after the geometry relaxation) and reduction are mostly metal centered. Compounds 1 and 2 and, for comparative purposes, other related scorpionate and pyrazole cobalt complexes, exhibit catalytic activity for the peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone under mild conditions (room temperature, aqueous H2O2). Insitu X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies indicated that the species derived from complexes 1 and 2 during the oxidation of cyclohexane (i.e., Ox-1 and Ox-2, respectively) are analogous and contain a Co-III site. Complex 2 showed low invitro cytotoxicity toward the HCT116 colorectal carcinoma and MCF7 breast adenocarcinoma cell lines.

Spinel systems with the composition of Cu 1−x Zn x Cr 2 O 4 [x = 0 CCr, x = 0.25 CZCr-1, x = 0.5 CZCr-2, x = 0.75 CZCr-3 and x = 1 ZCr] were prepared by homogeneous co-precipitation method and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and FT-IR spectroscopy. Elemental analysis was done by EDX, and surface area measurements by the BET method. The redox behavior of these catalysts in cyclohexane oxidation at 243 K using TBHP as oxidant was examined. Cyclohexanone was the major product over all catalysts with some cyclohexanol. 69.2% selectivity to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone at 23% conversion of cyclohexane was realized over zinc chromite spinels in 10 h.

The [Ru(3)O(H(3)CCO(2))(6)(py)(2)(L)]PF(6) clusters, where L=methanol or dimethyl sulfoxide, can be activated by peroxide or oxygen donor species, such as tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) or iodosylbenzene (PhIO), respectively, generating reactive intermediates of the type [Ru(3)(IV,IV,III)=0](+). In this way, they catalyse the oxidation of cyclohexane or cyclohexene by TBHP and PhIO, via oxygen atom transfer, rather than by the alternative oxygen radical mechanism characteristic of this type of complexes. In addition to their ability to perform efficient olefin epoxydation catalysis, these clusters also promote the cleavage of the C-H bond in hydrocarbons, resembling the oxidation catalysis by metal porphyrins. The highly efficient eco-friendly synthesis of ketones (yields over 99%) from secondary alcohols is achieved by combination of [FeCl2{eta(3)-HC(pz)(3)}] (pz = pyrazol-1-yl) supported on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and microwave irradiation, in a solvent-free medium. The carbon homoscorpionate iron(II) complex is the first one of this class to be used as catalyst for the oxidation of alcohols.

Reaction of the tris(3-phenylpyrazolyl)methane sulfonate species (Tpms(Ph))Li with the copper(I) complex [Cu(MeCN)(4)][PF6] affords [Cu(Tpms(Ph))(MeCN)] 1. The latter, upon reaction with equimolar amounts of cyclohexyl-(CyNC) or 2,6-dimethylphenyl (XylNC) isocyanides, or excess CO, furnishes the corresponding Cu(I)complexes [Cu(Tpms(Ph))(CNR)] (R = Cy 2, Xyl 3) or [Cu(Tpms(Ph))(CO)] 4. The ligated isocyanide in 2 or 3 (or the acetonitrile ligand in 1)is displaced by 3-iminoisoindolin-1-one to afford 5, the first copper(I) complex containing an 3-iminoisoindolin-1-one ligand. The ligated acetonitrile in 1 undergoes nucleophilic attack by methylamine to give the amidine complex [Cu(Tpms(Ph)){MeC(NH)NHMe}] 6, whereas only the starting materials were recovered from the attempted corresponding reactions of 2 and 3 with methylamine. Complexes 1 or 6 form the trinuclear hydroxo-copper(II)species [(mu-Cu){Cu(mu-OH) (2)(Tpms(Ph))}(2)] 7 upon air oxidation in moist methanol. In all the complexes the scorpionate ligand facially caps the metal in the N,N,O-coordination mode.

This work describes the synthesis of a first-generation iron porphyrin catalyst entrapped in a silica matrix by the sol-gel route, leading to spherical particles. The catalyst was synthesized by the method of Stober, through hydrolysis and condensation of the alkoxysilane TEOS in a mixture of alcohol, water and ammonia, in the presence of the iron porphyrin Fe(TPP)Cl. The relation between particle morphology and catalytic activity of the different Fe(TPP)-SiO2, obtained using different H2O/silane molar ratios and ammonia concentrations in the xerogel syntheses, was studied. The obtained catalysts were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy, NMR Si-29. thermogravimetric analysis and transmission electron microscopy. Their ability to catalyze (Z)-cyclooctene epoxidation and cyclohexane oxidation was tested using iodosylbenzene as oxygen donor; the oxidation products were analyzed by gas chromatography and the catalysts obtained in a form of particles spherical and monodispersed showed to be a promising catalytic system for selective oxidation. In this work, the catalytic intermediates for Fe(TPP)(+), Fe(TDCPP)(+), Fe(TFPP)(+), Mn(TPP)(+) and Mn(TDCPP)(+) supported on imidazole propyl gel with PhIO were studied by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. For Fe(TPP)+ and Fe(TFPP)+ the study was also monitored by EPR spectroscopy. The active catalytic intermediate observed for FeP-IPG is the ore-iron (IV) porphyrin pi cation radical Fe-IV(O)P.+, which is evidenced by a decrease in the intensity of the Sorer band. The total re-establishment of the initial Soret band intensity for Fe(TDCPP)IPG and Fe(TFPP)IPG at the end of the reaction shows that they were completely recovered, There are advantages in following the reactions of PNO with unsubstituted Fe(TPP)(+) and Mn(TPP)(+) on IPG by UV-Vis, since they were slower and allowed to 'see' the intermediate species without spectral interference from the recovered catalyst, since they are only partially recovered. With Fe(TPP)IPG, a band at 580 nm was detected at the beginning of the reaction, indicating the possible formation of a Fe-OIPh intermediate. Supporting Mn(TPP)(+) on IPG leads to a shift of band V from 478 nm to 488 nm. In the reaction of MnP-IPG with PhIO, we observed the disappearance of the band in 488 nm and the appearance of a band in 412 nm, which corresponds to the active catalytic intermediate Mn-V(O)P as the main component, as is expected for a more efficient system. The recovery of supported catalysts observed in these experiments was further proved with the possibility of their successive recyclings in cyclohexane oxidation reactions by PhIO.
