The slow reaction in an Al-5 wt.% Ag alloy has been investigated by resistivity measurements. The "slope change" method gave an activation energy of 1.25 eV for silver diffusion during the slow reaction. The existence of an excess concentration of vacancies in equilibrium with the dislocation loops seems to be responsible for the slow reaction. The presence of silver inhibits the nucleation of dislocation loops by holding up the quenched-in vacancies in solution. There is no indication of the presence of a third stage in the low-temperature ageing process of this alloy.

A Pd-Ag (24 wt%) alloy composite membrane was prepared by the magnetron sputtering. A gamma-Al2O3 membrane was synthesized by the sol-gel method and used as substrate of the Pd-Ag alloy film. The process parameters of the magnetron sputtering were optimized as a function of the compactness of the Pd-Ag alloy film. The best membrane with a thickness of 1 mu m was produced with a sputtering pressure of 2.7 Pa and a substrate temperature of 400 degrees C. The membrane had an H-2/N-2 permselectivity of 51.5-1000 and an H-2 permeation rate of 0.036-1.17 x 10(-5)cm(3)/cm(2).s. Pa, depending on operating conditions.

A hierarchical nanoparticle strategy to simultaneously gain super Raman signal amplification, high uniformity, and reproducibility is presented. Using hollow Au-Ag alloy nanourchins, an ultrahigh sensitivity, e.g., down to 1 fM concentrations for DEHP molecule is obtained. A small standard deviation of <10% is achieved by simply dropping and evaporating sub-100 nm nanourchins onto a substrate.

The application vistas of superconductors have widened very much since the discovery of high TC superconductors (HTS) as many of the applications can be realised at 77 K rather than going down to 4.2 K, the liquid He temperature. One such application is the HTS current lead which is used to connect a superconducting system with a room temperature power source. Minimising heat leak to the cryogenic environment is the main advantage of introducing current leads into superconducting systems. The properties of HTSS likes zero resistance (avoiding joule heating) and very low thermal conductivity (minimized conductive heat transfer) make them ideal candidates to be used as current leads. There are two forms of HTS current leads. (i) bulk form (tube or rod) prepared either from YBCO or BSCCO and (ii) tape form prepared from Bi-2223 multifilamentary tapes. The tape form of current leads has many advantages with respect to the mechanical and thermal stability related criteria. Crucial information on various aspects of HTS current lead development are not available in the literature as those are kept proprietary by various companies around the world. The present work has been undertaken to tailor the properties of multifilamentary tapes for the current lead application and to optimise the processing parameters of the same for enhanced critical current density and field tolerance. Also it is the aim of the present investigation is to prepare prototype current leads engineered for operation in conduction cooled mode and test them for operational stability

The Ag precipitation and dissolution reactions in the Cu-3 wt.% Al-4 wt.% Ag alloy were studied using isothermal and non-isothermal analyses. The activation energy values, obtained for the Ag precipitation reaction indicated that, when the Kissinger, Ozawa and Johnson-MehI-Avrami methods are compared, the Kissinger method is the most appropriate. Although the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation often does not fit precipitation data, the energy values obtained for Ag precipitation kinetics are in agreement with what was experimentally observed. For the dissolution reaction of Ag precipitates the activation energy values obtained from the Kissinger and Ozawa methods are higher than that found in the literature for the Ag dissolution in Cu. This discrepancy seems to be related to the fact that the activation energy is influenced by the heating rate. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The influence of 4 wt.%Ag addition on the isothermal decomposition kinetics of the beta' phase in the Cu-9wt.%Al alloy was studied by microhardness measurements, optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and X-ray diffractometry. The results showed that the presence of Ag decreases the beta' --> (alpha + gamma(1)) decomposition reaction rate in the Cu-9%Al-4%Ag alloy, an effect that may be associated to the gamma(1) phase which catalyses the Ag precipitation, making it faster than the decomposition reaction, and thus, stabilizing the martensitic phase. The reverse martensitic transformation in the Cu-10 wt%Al-6 wt%Ag alloy was studied by classical differential thermal analysis (IDTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicated that the presence of Ag in the Cu-10%Al alloy is responsible for the separation of the competitive reactions that occur during the reverse martensitic transformation and is also associated to an increase in the disordering degree at high temperatures, when compared with alloys without Ag addition. In this work the (alpha + gamma(1)) complex phase formation reaction in the Cu-10mass% Al-6mass% Ag alloy was studied using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Differential Thermodilatometry (DTD), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Optical (OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopies (SEM). The results indicated the presence of two different processes, related to a change in the Ag diffusion route from the alpha matrix to the (alpha + gamma(1)) complex phase.

Thermal analysis and compression tests at room temperature have been carried out for Cu-10 wt.% Al and Cu-10 wt.% Al-10 wt.% Ag alloys samples. The results indicate that the decomposition reaction of the (beta(1)) parent phase is decreased suppressed and a martensite stabilization effect can be induced by Ag addition. The Cu-Al-Ag alloy shows some degree of shape memory capacity. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The phase transitions that occur in the Cu-22.26 at.%Al-9.93 at.%Mn and Cu-22.49 at.%Al-10.01 at.%Mn-1.53 at.%Ag alloys after slow cooling were studied using differential scanning calorimetry at different heating rates, microhardness changes with temperature, magnetization changes with temperature, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy. The results indicated that the presence of Ag does not modify the transition sequence of Cu-Al-Mn alloy, introduces a new transition due to the (Ag-Cu)-rich precipitates dissolution at about 800 K, and changes the mechanism of DO 3 phase dissolution. This mechanistic change was analyzed and a sequence of phase transitions was proposed for the reaction. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The variation in the tensile properties at 77 K and 300 K in warm-rolled (300 K) Cd-1% Ag alloy with deformation has been studied in longitudinal as well as transverse specimens. The low-temperature yield strength increases with warm rolling without much loss in ductility. The strength at 300 K, however, decreases with heavy warm deformation. From microstructural studies and X-ray investigations, it was observed that changes in grain size and texture occur during warm rolling. Both these changes are found to be important in deciding the tensile properties. The longitudinal and transverse strengths at 77 K vary linearly with l-frac12, where l is the average grain diameter, and thus they obey the Hall-Petch relation. The Hall-Petch slope, k, is lower in specimens with favourable lcub1013rcub texture while the intercept σo is higher when the lcub0002rcub texture is less favourable.
