The authors use data from several sources, including plant-level data from the manufacturing sector in Germany, to expand the literature on outsourcing. They find that, in Germany, the extent of outsourcing among manufacturing industries is higher than among service industries and that the outsourcing intensity of these industries did not change much between 1995 and 2005. They also find a statistically significantly positive impact of industry-level outsourcing intensity on German plant-level labor productivity for both 2000 and 2005. The estimated economic impact of outsourcing on plant-level productivity is also fairly significant.

The main purpose of the study is to develop an integrated framework for managing project risks by analyzing risk across project, work package and activity levels, and developing responses. Design/methodology/approach: The study first reviews the literature of various contemporary risk management frameworks in order to identify gaps in project risk management knowledge. Then it develops a conceptual risk management framework using combined analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and risk map for managing project risks. The proposed framework has then been applied to a 1500 km oil pipeline construction project in India in order to demonstrate its effectiveness. The concerned project stakeholders were involved through focus group discussions for applying the proposed risk management framework in the project under study. Findings: The combined AHP and risk map approach is very effective to manage project risks across project, work package and activity levels. The risk factors in project level are caused because of external forces such as business environment (e.g. customers, competitors, technological development, politics, socioeconomic environment). The risk factors in work package and activity levels are operational in nature and created due to internal causes such as lack of material and labor productivity, implementation issues, team ineffectiveness, etc. Practical implications: The suggested model can be applied to any complex project and helps manage risk throughout the project life cycle. Originality/value: Both business and operational risks constitute project risks. In one hand, the conventional project risk management frameworks emphasize on managing business risks and often ignore operational risks. On the other hand, the studies that deal with operational risk often do not link them with business risks. However, they need to be addressed in an integrated way as there are a few risks that affect only the specific level. Hence, this study bridges the gaps. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The manufacturing sector is leaving the West for Asia’s low wages and good working culture. Europe would be better off keeping these manufacturing activities, slowing down wage inflation and what is more, letting a young, cheaper workforce from the East settle down within their borders. This would aid in preserving the diverse economic structure which has been characteristic for Europe.Beside the economic growth there are two more concepts which have turned into the “holy cows” of economics during the last fifty years. One is the need to constantly improve labor productivity and the other is increasing competitiveness of nations. The high labor productivity of some countries, induces severe unemployment in the globalized world. In the other hand it is high time we understood that it is not competition, but cooperation that brings more happiness to humanity.Should we still opt for “happiness” and “sanity”, it is quite obvious that we all should, in economists’ terms, define our individual welfare functions corresponding to our own set of values, staying free from the influence of media, advertisements and fashion. The cornerstone to all this is the intelligent citizen who prefers local goods and services.

Os resultados obtidos confirmam a dimensão, a idade e o endividamento como determinantes do crescimento; ABSTRACT: In the present study we analyzed the determinants of growth of family businesses through a sample of family businesses members of the Family Business Association, during the period between 2006 and 2014. In order to test the hypotheses under study were used panel data, with models of fixed and random effects. The Sales growth was defined as the dependent variable. The independent variables were defined: size; age; debt; short-term debt; medium and long term debt; labor productivity; asset structure; dummy variable of the financial crisis; dummy administration belong to the family; and dummy administrator gender variable. The results confirm the size, age, and debt as determinants of growth.

Being married may raise worker productivity and increase the probability of remaining in a job and, as consequence, obtaining a wage premium -- Yet, this effect may be different for males and females -- In developing countries, such as Colombia, the premium may be larger than in developed countries due to the differing social norms and labor market structures -- Using cross-sectional data from Colombian Household Surveys, this paper examines the marriage wage premium and its evolution in Colombia both at the aggregate level and by gender -- We find a marriage wage premium for both male and female populations; this wage premium is explained by the greater human capital endowment in married people and to employer favoritism due to the “social norms” which consider being married an appropriate behavior and reward it

Abstract Conditions of managerial and country’s competitiveness are the result of a consistent and sustained strategy linked with transfer of knowledge and technology from the investigation and development centers to enterprises. They offer an opportune and innovative answer for companies and countries, which are facing a strong competition in the local and international markets. Additionally, the public policy on the macroeconomic, meso and meta levels improve the growth production, labor productivity, incomes per capita and wages, as well as the use of natural resources. Therefore, Costa Rica has generated strategies and investments to reach appropriate positions in the world wide competition.
