The main constituents of red mud produced in Aluminio city (S.P., Brazil) are iron, aluminum, and silicon oxides. It has been determined that the average particle diameter for this red mud is between 0.05 and 0.002 mm. It is observed that a decrease in the percentage of smaller particles occurs at temperatures greater than 400 degrees C. This observation corresponds with the thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) data, which illustrate the phase transition of goethite to hematite. A 10% mass loss is observed in the thermal analysis patterns due to the hydroxide-oxide phase transitions of iron (primary phase transition) and aluminum (to a lesser extent). The disappearance and appearance of the different phases of iron and aluminum confirms the decomposition reactions proposed by the thermal analysis data. This Brazilian red mud has been classified as mesoporous at all temperatures except between 400 and 500 degrees C where the classification changes to micro/mesoporous.

Wet impregnation of pre-synthesized surfactant-stabilized aqueous rhodium (0) colloidal suspension on silica was employed in order to prepare supported Rh-0 nanoparticles of well-defined composition, morphology and size. A magnetic core-shell support of silica (Fe(3)O4@SiO2) was used to increase the handling properties of the obtained nanoheterogeneous catalyst. The nanocomposite catalyst Fe3O4@SiO2-Rh-0 NPs was highly active in the solventless hydrogenation of model olefins and aromatic substrates under mild conditions with turnover frequencies up to 143,000 h(-1). The catalyst was characterized by various transmission electron microscopy techniques showing well-dispersed rhodium nanoparticles (similar to 3 nm) mainly located at the periphery of the silica coating. The heterogeneous magnetite-supported nanocatalyst was investigated in the hydrogenation of cyclohexene and compared to the previous surfactant-stabilized aqueous Rh-0 colloidal suspension and various silica-supported Rh-0 nanoparticles. Finally, the composite catalyst could be reused in several runs after magnetic separation. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful oxidant that finds application in several areas, but most particularly in the treatment of industrial wastewaters. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of applied potential and electrolyte flow conditions on the in situ generation of hydrogen peroxide in an electrochemical flow-by reactor with a gas diffusion electrode (GDE). The electrolyses were performed in an aqueous acidic medium using a GDE constructed with conductive black graphite and polytetrafluoroethylene (80:20 w/w). Under laminar flow conditions (flow rate = 50 L/h), hydrogen peroxide was formed in a maximum yield of 414 mg/L after 2 h at -2.25 V vs Pt //Ag/AgCl (global rate constant = 3.1 mg/(L min); energy consumption = 22.1 kWh/kg). Under turbulent flow (300 L/h), the maximum yield obtained was 294 mg/L after 2 h at -1.75 V vs Pt//Ag/AgCl (global rate constant = 2.5 mg/ (L min); energy consumption = 30.1 kWh/kg).

BACKGROUND: Fed-batch culture allows the cultivation of Arthrospira platensis using urea as nitrogen source. Tubular photobioreactors substantially increase cell growth, but the successful use of this cheap nitrogen source requires a knowledge of the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the process. This work aims at identifying the effect of two independent variables, temperature (T) and urea daily molar flow-rate (U), on cell growth, biomass composition and thermodynamic parameters involved in this photosynthetic cultivation. RESULTS: The optimal values obtained were T = 32 degrees C and U = 1.16 mmol L-1 d-1, under which the maximum cell concentration was 4186 +/- 39 mg L-1, cell productivity 541 +/- 5 mg L-1 d-1 and yield of biomass on nitrogen 14.3 +/- 0.1 mg mg-1. Applying an Arrhenius-type approach, the thermodynamic parameters of growth (?H* = 98.2 kJ mol-1; ?S* = - 0.020 kJ mol-1 K-1; ?G* = 104.1 kJ mol-1) and its thermal inactivation (Delta H-D(0) =168.9 kJ mol-1; Delta S-D(0) = 0.459 kJ mol-1 K-1; Delta G(D)(0) =31.98 kJ mol-1) were estimated. CONCLUSIONS: To maximize cell growth T and U were simultaneously optimized. Biomass lipid content was not influenced by the experimental conditions, while protein content was dependent on both independent variables. Using urea as nitrogen source prevented the inhibitory effect already observed with ammonium salts. Copyright (c) 2012 Society of Chemical Industry

Albendazole sulfoxide (ABZSO), a broad spectrum anthelmintic drug extensively used in veterinary medicine, exhibits a low and erratic bioavailability due to its poor solubility in biological fluids. The aims of this study were the development, physicochemical characterization, and in vitro release profile evaluation of ABZSO-loaded Eudragit RS PO (R) microparticles (MPs) in order to improve the rate of dissolution and the dissolved percentage of the drug in pH 7.4. MPs were successfully obtained by the emulsification/solvent evaporation method, achieving entrapment efficiency and process yield of about 60% and mean size of 254 nm. The in vitro release profile study showed that dissolution of ABZSO followed a pseudo-second order kinetics and MPs were able to increase significantly (p < 0.05) the rate of dissolution of ABZSO compared to the micronized and non-micronized free drug, what could lead to an improvement in bioavailability and, consequently, in the antiparasitic activity. The study introduces a new regression model developed to estimate the hourly values of diffuse solar radiation at the surface. The model is based on the clearness index and diffuse fraction relationship, and includes the effects of cloud (cloudiness and cloud type), traditional meteorological variables (air temperature, relative humidity and atmospheric pressure observed at the surface) and air pollution (concentration of particulate matter observed at the surface). The new model is capable of predicting hourly values of diffuse solar radiation better than the previously developed ones (R-2 = 0.93 and RMSE = 0.085). A simple version with a large applicability is proposed that takes into consideration cloud effects only (cloudiness and cloud height) and shows a R-2 = 0.92. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. The objective of this research was to study phenol degradation in anaerobic fluidized bed reactors (AFBR) packed with polymeric particulate supports (polystyrene - PS, polyethylene terephthalate - PET, and polyvinyl chloride - PVC). The reactors were operated with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h. The influent phenol concentration in the AFBR varied from 100 to 400 mg L-1, resulting in phenol removal efficiencies of similar to 100%. The formation of extracellular polymeric substances yielded better results with the PVC particles; however, deformations in these particles proved detrimental to reactor operation. PS was found to be the best support for biomass attachment in an AFBR for phenol removal. The AFBR loaded with PS was operated to analyze the performance and stability for phenol removal at feed concentrations ranging from 50 to 500 mg L-1. The phenol removal efficiency ranged from 90-100%.

NiAl intermetallic compound was synthesized by mechanical alloying technique in planetary and attritor mills. The starting powders consisted of elemental mixtures of Ni and Al at Ni50Al50(at%) composition. In the planetary mill, compound formation occurred gradually during mechanical alloying, while the occurrence of a mechanically induced self-propagating reaction (MSR) can be suggested in the attritor mill. The NiAl obtained in both mill types was partially disordered with long-range order parameter not inferior to 0.66. Quantitative phase analysis using the Rietveld method was performed in as-milled samples, and this method was also employed to estimate changes in crystallite size and lattice strain of the NiAl produced during mechanical alloying. The present study aimed at evaluating the production of Arthrospira platensis in tubular photobioreactor using CO2 from ethanol fermentation. The results of these cultivations were compared to those obtained using CO2 from cylinder at different protocols of simultaneous ammonium sulfate and sodium nitrate feeding. Maximum cell concentration (X-m), cell productivity (P-x), nitrogen-to-cell conversion factor (Y-X/N), and biomass composition (total lipids and proteins) were selected as responses and evaluated by analysis of variance. The source of CO2 did not exert any significant statistical influence on these responses, which means that the flue gas from ethanol fermentation could successfully be used as a carbon source as well as to control the medium pH, thus contributing to reduce the greenhouse effect. The results taken as a whole demonstrated that the best combination of responses mean values (X-m = 4.543 g L-1; P-x = 0.460 g L-1 d(-1); Y-X/N = 15.6 g g(-1); total lipids = 8.39%; total proteins = 18.7%) was obtained using as nitrogen source a mixture of 25% NaNO3 and 75% (NH4)(2)SO4, both expressed as nitrogen. Catalysts containing mixtures of NiO, MgO and ZrO2 were synthesized by the polymerization method. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), physisorption of N-2 (BET), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and then tested in the partial oxidation of methane (POM) in the presence of air (2CH(4):1O(2)) at 750 degrees C for 6 h. Among the ternary oxides, the catalyst with 40 mol% MgO showed the highest conversion rates in the catalytic processes, but also the highest carbon deposition values (48 mmol h (1)). The greater the amount of NiO-MgO solid solution formed, the higher was the conversion rate of reactants (CH4), peaking at 40 mol% of MgO. Catalysts with lower Ni content on the surface achieved a high rate of CH4 conversion into synthesis gas (H-2 + CO). The formation of more NiO-MgO solid solution seemed to inhibit the deactivation of Ni degrees during reaction. The values of the H-2/CO product ratio were generally found to be slightly lower than stoichiometric. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Significant amounts of wastes are generated by the coffee industry, among of which, coffee silverskin (CS) and spent coffee grounds (SCG) are the most abundantly generated during the beans roasting and instant coffee preparation, respectively. This study evaluated the sugars metabolism and production of ethanol by three different yeast strains (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia stipitis and Kluyveromyces fragilis) when cultivated in sugar rich hydrolysates produced by acid hydrolysis of CS and SCG. S. cerevisiae provided the best ethanol production from SCG hydrolysate (11.7 g/l, 50.2% efficiency). On the other hand, insignificant (<= 1.0 g/l) ethanol production was obtained from CS hydrolysate, for all the evaluated yeast strains, probably due to the low sugars concentration present in this medium (approx. 22 g/l). It was concluded that it is possible to reuse SCG as raw material for ethanol production, which is of great interest for the production of this biofuel, as well as to add value to this agro-industrial waste. CS hydrolysate, in the way that is produced, was not a suitable fermentation medium for ethanol production; however, the hydrolysate concentration for the sugars content increase previous the use as fermentation medium could be an alternative to overcome this problem. Corrosion is a relevant issue regarding the problem of biodiesel compatibility with polymers and metals. This work aims to evaluate the influence of the natural light incidence and temperature in the corrosion rate of brass and copper immersed in commercial biodiesel as well as biodiesel degradation after the contact with metallic ions. The characterization of corrosion behavior was performed by weight loss measurements according to ASTM G1 and ASTM G31. The experiments according to ASTM G1 were performed at room temperature in light presence and absence. Experiments were also conducted at 55 degrees C in order to compare with ASTM G31 that is also performed at that temperature. The biodiesel degradation was characterized by water content, oxidation stability, viscosity as well as XRF, IR and Raman spectroscopies. The results of ASTM G1 tests showed that the thickness loss for both metals determined at room temperature is slightly higher when there is light incidence and these values significantly decrease for the highest temperature. The results of ASTM G31 tests indicated that air bubbling along with higher temperature affects mostly immersed samples. Biodiesel in contact with metals shows significant degradation in its properties as evidenced by increasing water content, higher viscosity and lower oxidation stability. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, the effect of various casting solution salt dopants with similar cations, but different anions: (NaPO3)(6), Na2SO4, Na2CO3, NaCl, and NaF, on the morphology and performance of polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membranes was evaluated. The phase inversion process was used to produce all membranes using an 18% polyethersulfone in n-methylpyrrolidone casting solution and water as the non-solvent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the membrane cross-section and surface pores were used to determine the specific anion effects on membrane morphology. The SEM images depicted significant changes to the membrane internal structure and pore size with respect to the type and concentration of the casting solution anion dopant. Membrane permeability, molecular weight cut-off, alginate retention, and susceptibility to fouling were evaluated using ultrapure water dead-end and ultrapure water, aqueous polyethylene glycol, aqueous sodium alginate, and natural surface water cross-flow filtration tests. Among the anions evaluated, hexametaphosphate doped at 1% w/w to the polymer resulted in the membrane with highest dead-end permeability at 490 LMH-bar (2- to 3-fold greater than the control), greatest alginate retention at 96.5%, and lowest susceptibility to fouling. The significant increase in membrane performance indicates that the hexametaphosphate anion has great potential to be used as a membrane casting solution dopant. It was also clearly demonstrated that membrane pore morphological characteristics can be effectively used to predict drinking water treatment performance. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This work addresses the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) by up-cycling common solid wastes. These feedstocks could supersede the use of costly and often toxic or highly flammable chemicals, such as hydrocarbon gases, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen, which are commonly used as feedstocks in current nanomanufacturing processes for CNMs. Agricultural sugar cane bagasse and corn residues, scrap tire chips, and postconsumer polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle shreddings were either thermally treated by sole pyrolysis or by sequential pyrolysis and partial oxidation. The resulting gaseous carbon-bearing effluents were then channeled into a heated reactor. CNMs, including carbon nanotubes, were catalytically synthesized therein on stainless steel meshes. This work revealed that the structure of the resulting CNMs is determined by the feedstock type, through the disparate mixtures of carbon-bearing gases generated when different feedstocks are pyrolyzed. CNM characterization was conducted by scanning and transmission electron microscopy as well as by Raman spectroscopy and by thermogravimetric analysis. Gas chromatography was used to characterize the gases in the synthesis chamber. This work demonstrated an alternative method for efficient manufacturing of CNMs using both biodegradable and nonbiodegradable agricultural and municipal carbonaceous wastes.

Batch combustion of fixed beds of coal, bagasse and blends thereof took place in a pre-heated two-stage electric laboratory furnace, under high-heating rates. The average input fuel/air equivalence ratios were similar for all fuels. The primary and secondary furnace temperatures were varied from 800 degrees C to 1000 degrees C. The effects of fuel blending, combustion staging, and operating furnace temperatures on the emissions from the two fuels were assessed. Furnace effluents were analyzed for carbon dioxide and for products of incomplete combustion (PIC) including CO, volatile and semi-volatile hydrocarbons, as well as particulate matter. Results showed that whereas CO2 was generated during both the observed sequential volatile matter and char combustion phases of the fuels, PICs were only generated during the volatile matter combustion phase. CO2 emissions were the highest from coal, whereas CO and other PIC emissions were the highest from bagasse. Under this particular combustion configuration, combustion of the volatile matter of the blends resulted in lower yields of PIC, than combustion of the volatiles of the neat fuels. Though CO and unburned hydrocarbons from coal as well as from the blends did not exhibit a clear trend with furnace temperature, such emissions from bagasse clearly increased with temperature. The presence of the secondary furnace (afterburner) typically reduced PIC, by promoting further oxidation of the primary furnace effluents. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
