The differential cross section for the production of direct photons in p + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV at midrapidity was measured in the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Inclusive direct photons were measured in the transverse momentum range from 5: 5-25 GeV/c, extending the range beyond previous measurements. Event structure was studied with an isolation criterion. Next-to-leading-order perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations give a good description of the spectrum. When the cross section is expressed versus x(T), the PHENIX data are seen to be in agreement with measurements from other experiments at different center-of-mass energies.

The PHENIX experiment has measured electrons and positrons at midrapidity from the decays of hadrons containing charm and bottom quarks produced in d + Au and p + p collisions at root S-NN = 200 GeV in the transverse-momentum range 0.85 <= p(T)(e) <= 8.5 GeV/c. In central d + Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor R-dA at 1.5 < p(T) < 5 GeV/c displays evidence of enhancement of these electrons, relative to those produced in p + p collisions, and shows that the mass-dependent Cronin enhancement observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider extends to the heavy D meson family. A comparison with the neutral-pion data suggests that the difference in cold-nuclear-matter effects on light- and heavy-flavor mesons could contribute to the observed differences between the pi(0) and heavy-flavor-electron nuclear modification factors R-AA. Unpolarized cross sections and double-helicity asymmetries of single-inclusive positive and negative charged hadrons at midrapidity from p + p collisions at root s = 62.4 GeV are presented. The PHENIX measurement of the cross sections for 1.0 < p(T) < 4.5 GeV/c are consistent with perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the strong-coupling constant, alpha(s). Resummed pQCD calculations including terms with next-to-leading-log accuracy, yielding reduced theoretical uncertainties, also agree with the data. The double-helicity asymmetry, sensitive at leading order to the gluon polarization in a momentum-fraction range of 0.05 less than or similar to x(gluon) less than or similar to 0.2, is consistent with recent global parametrizations disfavoring large gluon polarization.

Measurements of the anisotropy parameter v(2) of identified hadrons (pions, kaons, and protons) as a function of centrality, transverse momentum p(T), and transverse kinetic energy KET at midrapidity (vertical bar eta vertical bar < 0.35) in Au + Au collisions at root s(N N) = 200 GeV are presented. Pions and protons are identified up to p(T) = 6 GeV/c, and kaons up to p(T) = 4 GeV/c, by combining information from time-of-flight and aerogel Cerenkov detectors in the PHENIX Experiment. The scaling of v(2) with the number of valence quarks (n(q)) has been studied in different centrality bins as a function of transverse momentum and transverse kinetic energy. A deviation from previously observed quark-number scaling is observed at large values of KET/n(q) in noncentral Au + Au collisions (20-60%), but this scaling remains valid in central collisions (0-10%).

Measurements of the differential cross section and the transverse single-spin asymmetry, A(N), vs x(F) for pi(0) and eta mesons are reported for 0.4 < x(F) < 0.75 at an average pseudorapidity of 3.68. A data sample of approximately 6.3 pb(-1) was analyzed, which was recorded during p(up arrow) + p collisions at root s = 200 GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The average transverse beam polarization was 56%. The cross section for pi(0), including the previously unmeasured region of x(F) > 0.55, is consistent with a perturbative QCD prediction, and the eta/pi(0) cross-section ratio agrees with existing midrapidity measurements. For 0.55 < x(F) < 0.75, the average A(N) for eta is 0.210 +/- 0.056, and that for pi(0) is 0.081 +/- 0.016. The probability that these two asymmetries are equal is similar to 3%.

In spite of the higher toxicity of oxygen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) than of their parent-PAHs, there are only a few studies of the concentrations, composition pattern, sources and fate of OPAHs in soil, the presumably major environmental sink of OPAHs. This is related to the fact that there are only few available methods to measure OPAHs together with PAHs in soil. rnThe objectives of my thesis were to (i) develop a GC/MS-based method to measure OPAHs and their parent-PAHs in soils of different properties and pollution levels, (ii) apply the method to soils from Uzbekistan and Slovakia and (iii) investigate into the fate of OPAHs, particularly their vertical transport in soilrnI optimized and fully evaluated an analytical method based on pressurized liquid extraction, silica gel column chromatographic fractionation of extracted compounds into alkyl-/parent-PAH and OPAH fractions, silylation of hydroxyl-/carboxyl-OPAHs with N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoracetamide and GC/MS quantification of the target compounds. The method was targeted at 34 alkyl-/parent-PAHs, 7 carbonyl-OPAHs and 19 hydroxyl-/carboxyl-OPAHs. I applied the method to 11 soils from each of the Angren industrial region (which hosts a coal mine, power plant, rubber factory and gold refinery) in Uzbekistan and in the city of Bratislava, the densely populated capital of Slovakia.rnRecoveries of five carbonyl-OPAHs in spike experiments ranged between 78-97% (relative standard deviation, RSD, 5-12%), while 1,2-acenaphthenequinone and 1,4-naphtho-quinone had recoveries between 34-44%% (RSD, 19-28%). Five spiked hydroxyl-/carboxyl-OPAHs showed recoveries between 36-70% (RSD, 13-46%), while others showed recoveries <10% or were completely lost. With the optimized method, I determined, on average, 103% of the alkyl-/parent-PAH concentrations in a certified reference material.rnThe ∑OPAHs concentrations in surface soil ranged 62-2692 ng g-1 and those of ∑alkyl-/parent-PAHs was 842-244870 ng g-1. The carbonyl-OPAHs had higher concentrations than the hydroxyl-/carboxyl-OPAHs. The most abundant carbonyl-OPAHs were consistently 9-fluorenone (9-FLO), 9,10-anthraquinone (9,10-ANQ), 1-indanone (1-INDA) and benzo[a]anthracene-7,12-dione (7,12-B(A)A) and the most abundant hydroxyl-/carboxyl-OPAH was 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde. The concentrations of carbonyl-OPAHs were frequently higher than those of their parent-PAHs (e.g., 9-FLO/fluorene >100 near a rubber factory in Angren). The concentrations of OPAHs like those of their alkyl-/parent-PAHs were higher at locations closer to point sources and the OPAH and PAH concentrations were correlated suggesting that both compound classes originated from the same sources. Only for 1-INDA and 2-biphenylcarboxaldehyde sources other than combustion seemed to dominate. Like those of the alkyl-/parent-PAHs, OPAH concentrations were higher in topsoils than subsoils. Evidence of higher mobility of OPAHs than their parent-PAHs was provided by greater subsoil:topsoil concentration ratios of carbonyl-OPAHs (0.41-0.82) than their parent-PAHs (0.41-0.63) in Uzbekistan. This was further backed by the consistently higher contribution of more soluble 9-FLO and 1-INDA to the ∑carbonyl-OPAHs in subsoil than topsoil at the expense of 9,10-ANQ, 7,12-B(A)A and higher OPAH/parent-PAH concentration ratios in subsoil than topsoil in Bratislava.rnWith this thesis, I contribute a suitable method to determine a large number of OPAHs and PAHs in soil. My results demonstrate that carbonyl-OPAHs are more abundant than hydroxyl-/carboxyl-OPAHs and OPAH concentrations are frequently higher than parent-PAH concentrations. Furthermore, there are indications that OPAHs are more mobile in soil than PAHs. This calls for appropriate legal regulation of OPAH concentrations in soil.

The Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) is a simultaneous sampling campaign of the world's oceans which took place (for the first time) on the summer solstice (June 21st) in the year 2014. These cumulative samples, related in time, space and environmental parameters, provide insights into fundamental rules describing microbial diversity and function and contribute to the blue economy through the identification of novel, ocean-derived biotechnologies. We see OSD data as a reference data set for generations of experiments to follow in the coming decade. The present data set includes a description of each sample collected during the Ocean Sampling Day 2014 and provides contextual environmental data measured concurrently with the collection of water samples for genomic analyses.

Tin disulfide SnS2 was recently proposed as a high efficiency solar cell precursor [1]. The aim of this work is a deep study of the structural disposition of the most important polytipes of this layered material, not only describing the electronic correlation but also the interatomic Van der Waals interactions that is present between the layers. The two recent implementations to take Van der Waals interactions into account in the VASP code are the self-consistent Dion et al. [2] functional optimized for solids by Michaelides et al [3] and the Grimme [4] dispersion correction that is applied after each autoconsistent PBE electronic calculation. In this work these two methods are compared with DFT PBE functional. The results we will presented at this Conference, demonstrates the enhancement of the geometric parameters by the use of the Van der Waals interactions in agreement with the experimental values.

High-density mutational spectra have been established for exon 3 of the gene encoding adenine phosphoribosyltransferase (APRT) of the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line derivative D422 and closely related and/or modified lines by using the mutagen ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS). The total number of selectable sites (GC-->AT transitions yielding a selectable APRT- phenotype) was estimated at 31 based on our own accumulated data base of 136 sequenced exon 3 mutations and on literature reports. D422 and two other APRT hemizygous lines each yielded very similar spectra and showed two populations of mutable sites: (i) 24 "baseline" sites that followed the Poisson distribution and therefore were equally susceptible to mutation and (ii) two hotspots, one comprising a cluster at nucleotides 1293-1309 and the other at nucleotide 1365. Collectively, the latter sites were about 10-fold more frequently mutated than the others. CHO cells are mer- as they lack the repair enzyme O6-methylguanidine methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.63). In modified repair-proficient CHO cells, the distribution of mutations among all of the 31 sites was random, with only 3 of the 19 GC-->AT transitions in the above hotspots. To determine whether the distribution was locus-dependent, two independent lines carrying single copies of transfected APRT genes were generated from a derivative of D422 carrying a deletion in the endogenous APRT gene. Nucleotides 1293-1309 were again no longer preferentially mutated, but the site at nucleotide 1365 was still a hotspot. We conclude that mutational spectra in mer- cells are at least in part locus dependent and that some sequences are particularly susceptible to EMS mutagenesis and perhaps also to methyltransferase repair.
