In this paper, the Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH s) type hydrotalcite were synthesized, characterized and tested as basic heterogeneous catalysts for the production of biodiesel by transesterification of sunflower oil with methanol. The synthesis of materials Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH s) by co-precipitation method from nitrates of magnesium and aluminum, and sodium carbonate. The materials were submitted to the variation in chemical composition, which is the amount of Mg2+ ions replaced by Al3+. This variation affects the characteristic physico-chemical and reaction the solid. The molar ratio varied in the range of 1:1 and 3:1 magnesium / aluminum, and their values between 0.2 and 0.33. This study aims to evaluate the influence of variation of molar ratio of mixed oxides derived from LDH s and the influence of impregnation of a material with catalytic activity, the KI, the rate of conversion of sunflower oil into methyl esters (biodiesel) through transesterification by heterogeneous catalysis. .The catalysts were calcined at 550 ° C and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy of X-ray (SEM / EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and test basicity. The transesterification reaction was performed for reflux is a mixture of sunflower oil and methanol with a molar ratio of 15:1, a reaction time of 4h and a catalyst concentration of 2% by weight. The physical-chemical characterization of sunflower oil and biodiesel obtained by the route methyl submitted according NBR, EN, ASTM. Subsequently, it was with the chromatographic and thermogravimetric characterizations of oils. The results of chromatographic analysis showed that the catalysts were effective in converting vegetable oil into biodiesel, in particular the type hydrotalcite KI-HDL-R1, with a conversion of 99.2%, indicating the strong influence of the chemical composition of the material, in special due to presence of potassium in the structure of the catalyst

In recent years, studies about the physicochemical properties of mixed oxides, call attention of the scientific community, properties like as piezoelectricity, photoluminescence, or applications as catalysts, arise in these compounds, when their chemical compositions are modified, in this context some routes are employed in the synthesis of these materials, among which can be cited these methods: ceramic, combustion, co-precipitation, Pechini or polymeric precursor method, hydrothermal, sol-gel; these routes are divided into traditional routes or chemical routes. In this work were synthesized oxides with variable composition, from the thermal decomposition of titanium, cobalt, nickel and praseodymium nitrilotriacetates. The nitrilotriacetates were characterized by IR Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric (TG/ DTG) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), while oxides have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Spectrofluorimetry and IR Spectroscopy (FTIR). From FTIR data, it was demonstrated that the displacement of the band corresponding to the carboxylate group (νCOOH) at 1712 cm-1, present in nitrilotriacetic acid (H3NTA), for 1680-1545 cm-1, these stretches are characteristics of coordinated nitrilotriacetates, By thermal analysis (TG/DTG /DSC), it was suggested, that in an oxidizing atmosphere (air) oxides are obtained at lower temperatures than in an inert atmosphere N2(g). By results from X-ray Diffraction (XRD), it was determinated that the oxides are crystalline and the predominant phases obtained are summarized titanate phases rutile and ilmenite. By fluorimetry was observed that the intensity of emission bands are directly proportional to the concentration of ions Ni2+, Co2+ and Pr3+, and IR spectroscopy (FTIR) from oxides, demonstrated the disappearance of characteristic bands by nitrilotriacetates, determining the complete decomposition of the nitrilotriacetates in oxides

One of the main applications of methane is in the production of syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Procedures used in this process are steam reforming, CO2 reforming, partial oxidation and autothermal reforming. The present study evaluated and compared the behavior of nickel catalysts supported on mixed oxides of cerium and manganese in the partial oxidation of methane with that of nickel catalysts supported on mixed oxides of cerium and zirconium. Mixed oxides of cerium and zirconium or cerium and manganese were synthesized using two different preparation methods, the polymeric precursor based on Pechini method and combustion reaction using a microwave. This was followed by impregnation with nickel content of 15 %. Samples were calcined at 300, 800 and 900 °C and characterized by specific surface area (SSA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and the reaction of partial oxidation of methane. The specific areas of samples decrease with the rise in calcination temperature and after nickel impregnation. Metal-cerium solid solution was formed and the presence of other manganese species outside the solid solution structure was confirmed in the compound with the highest amounts of manganese oxides showed. With regard to scanning electron microscopy, supports based on cerium and zirconium prepared by Pechini method exhibited agglomerated particles without uniform geometry or visible pores on the surface. However, compounds containing manganese presented empty spaces in its structure. Through synthesis by combustion reaction, morphology acquired independently of the proposed composition demonstrated greater porosity in relation to Pechini synthesis. Although catalysts were prepared using different synthesis methods, the insertion of nickel showed very similar reduction profiles (TPR). In relation to nickel catalysts supported on mixed oxide of cerium and zirconium, there is an initial reduction of NiO species that present certain interaction with the support. This is followed by the reduction of Ce4+ in Ce3+ surface, with subsequent bulk reduction. For catalysts containing manganese, a reduction of nickel oxide species occurs, followed by two stages of reduction for species Mn2O3 in Mn3O4 and Mn3O4 in MnO, with subsequent reduction of bulk. With respect to partial oxidation reactions, the nickel catalyst supported on mixed oxide of cerium and zirconium, prepared using the Pechini method, exhibited CH4 conversion of approximately 80 %, with conversion of 81 % when prepared by combustion. This behavior continued for 10 hours of reaction. Manganese content was also found to directly influence catalytic activity of materials; the greater the manganese oxide content, the faster deactivation and destabilization occurred in the catalyst. In both synthesis methods, the nickel catalyst supported on mixed oxide of cerium and zirconium maintained an H2/CO ratio very close to 2 during the 10 hours of partial oxidation reaction. Samples containing manganese displayed smaller H2/CO ratios and lower performance in partial oxidation.

Titanium oxide is a good candidate as new support for hydrotreating (HDT) catalysts, but has the inconvenience of presenting small surface area and poor thermal stability. To overcome these handicaps TiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides were proposed as catalyst support. Here, the results concerning the preparation, characterization and testing of molybdenum catalyst supported on titania-alumina are presented. The support was prepared by sol-gel route using titanium and aluminum isopropoxides, chelated with acetylacetone (acac) to promote similar hydrolysis ratio for both the alcoxides. The effect of nominal complexing ratios [acac]/[Ti] and of sol aging temperature on the structural features of nanometric particles was analyzed by quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) and N-2 adsorption isotherm measurements. These characterizations have shown that the addition of acac and the increase of aging temperature favor the full dispersion of primary nanoparticles in mother acid solution. The dried powder presents a monomodal distribution of slit-shaped micropores, formed by irregular packing of platelet primary particles, surface area superior to 200 m(2) g(-1) and mean pore size of about 1 nm. These characteristics of porous texture are preserved after firing at 673 K. The diffraction patterns of sample fired above 973 K show only the presence of anatase crystalline phase. The crystalline structure of the support remained unaltered after molybdenum adsorption, but the surface area and the micropore volume were drastically reduced. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier B.V. A preparation method for a new electrode material based on the LiNi0.8Co0.2O2/polyaniline (PANI) composite is reported. This material is prepared by in situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 assisted by ultrasonic irradiation. The materials are characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDX, AFM, nitrogen adsorption (BET surface area) and electrical conductivity measurements. PANI in the emeraldine salt form interacts with metal-oxide particles to assure good connectivity. The dc electrical conductivity measurements at room temperature indicate that conductivity values are one order of magnitude higher in the composite than in the oxide alone. This behavior determines better reversibility for Li-insertion in charge-discharge cycles compared to the pristine mixed oxide when used as electrode of lithium batteries. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Traditional hydrotreating catalysts are constituted by molybdenum deposited on Al2O3 promoted by nickel and phosphorous. Several studies have shown that TiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides are excellent supports for the active phases. Results concerning the preparation, characterization and testing of molybdenum catalyst supported on titania-alumina are presented. The support was prepared by sol-gel route using titanium and aluminum isopropoxides, the titanium one chelated with acetylacetone (acac) to promote similar hydrolysis ratio for both the alcoxides. The effect of nominal molar ratio [Ti]/[Ti+Al] on the microstructural features of nanometric particles was analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction, N-2 Adsorption Isotherms and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The catalytic activity of Mo impregnated supports was evaluated using the thiophene hydrodesulfurization at different temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The pores size distribution curve moves from the micropores to the mesopores by increasing the Ti contents, allowing the fine tuning of average size from 2.5 to 6 nm. Maximal (367 m(2).g(-1)) and minimal (127 m(2).g(-1)) surface area were found for support containing [Ti]/[Ti+Al] ratio equal to 0.1 and 1, respectively. The good mesopore texture of alumina-titania support with [Ti]/[Ti+Al] molar ratio between 0.3 and 0.5 was found particularly valuable for the preparation of well dispersed MoS2 active phase, leading to HDS catalyst with somewhat higher activity than that prepared using a commercial alumina support.

Precursor powders to obtain SrTiO3 were prepared by using 8-hydroxyquinoline precipitant agent. The residues from the thermal decomposition, followed by TG/DTG/DTA, were characterized by XRD and it could be verified that the mixed oxides could be obtained varying the thermal decomposition conditions like atmosphere and heating rate. However, the morphology and crystallinity of these residues is highly affected by such variations. (C) 2000 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

A comparative study of two customary routes of ceramics processing applied to the synthesis of SnO2-based varistors is reported in this paper. Devices of equivalent composition were prepared through the Pechini method and through directly mixing the oxides without the addition of anti-agglomerants or binders. The microstructures of the sintered samples were characterised with X-ray diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The electrical behaviour of the devices was studied on the basis of the current density versus electric field (J-E) characteristics and impedance spectroscopy measurements. The Pechini method ensures the homogeneity in the distribution of the additives in the tin oxide matrix but the formation of secondary phases seems to be independent of the synthesis route. Devices with similar non-linear coefficients of 18 and 21 were obtained through the mixed oxides route and the Pechini method, respectively. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. This work presents a study on the production of biodiesel by esterification reaction of oleic acid with methanol using batch reactor and different catalysts based on CeO2 and WO3 and HZSM-5. Acid treatment was performed in order to increase the catalytic activity. Different characterization techniques were performed, among them X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analysis TGA/DTA, Spectroscopy in the Region in Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). The effects of independent variables: temperature, molar ratio of oil: alcohol and the amount of catalyst and their interactions on the dependent variable (conversion of oleic acid to the corresponding ester). Overall, through the results obtained in the characterization was observed that the applied treatments were efficient, however the XRF technique, indicated that tungsten oxide leaching could occur during the preparation of the materials. The treatments performed on HZSM-5 caused no significant changes in the structure indicating that the zeolite was quite resistant to the treatments used. It was evaluated using complete 23 factorial design. For the catalysts investigated, the best reaction conditions were obtained when using higher levels of the independent variables temperature and amount of catalyst. However, for the variable molar ratio the lowest level showed significant yields for most of the synthesized catalyst, obtaining maximum conversion to the OC (67.97%), OW (74.37%), HZSM-5 (61.16%) OC-OW 1 (75.93%), OC-OW 2 (82.57%), OC-OW 3 (79.15%), S/OC-OW 1 (86.90%), S/OC-OW 2 (91.04%), S/OC-OW 3 (88.60%), S/OC-OW/H 1 (92.34%), S/OC-OW/H 2 (100%) and S/OC-OW/H 3 (98.16%). According to the experimental design, the temperature has the biggest influence on the reaction variable for all the synthesized catalysts. Among the catalysts investigated S/OC-OW/H 2 e S/OC-OW/H 3 were more effective. Reuse tests showed that the catalyst activity decreased after each cycle, indicating that the regeneration process was effective. The leaching test indicated that the catalysts are heterogeneous in the evaluated operating range. The catalysts investigated showed themselves promising for the production of biodiesel.

CexZr1-xO2 (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.9) were synthesized with Zr and Ce chloride precursors, using the triblock copolymer Pluronic P123 and HCl (2 mol/L). The pH adjustment was performed in two ways: synthesis A used 11.4 mL of a NH4OH solution added at once to the initial mixture, composed by metal precursors and template in HCl; synthesis B was done by dripping slowly until the change of pH value (between 3 and 6). In this work, CexZr1-xO2 samples synthesized by these two processes are compared. The effects of pH values in materials characteristics were also evaluated. These samples were analysed by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) with Rietveld refinement, and Nitrogen Adsorption/Desorption. In both processes, the studied materials presented two crystalline phases of CexZr1-xO2 solid solution: cubic and tetragonal. The synthesis A also presented a tetragonal phase of ZrO2. The average crystallite size and the Brunauer- Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area are bigger in process A. Both processes give samples with a mesoporous structure.

CuO/ceria-zirconia catalysts have been prepared, deeply characterised (N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms at −196 °C, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, TEM and H2-TPR) and tested for NO oxidation to NO2 in TPR conditions, and for soot combustion at mild temperature (400 °C) in a NOx/O2 stream. The behaviour has been compared to that of a reference Pt/alumina commercial catalyst. The ceria-zirconia support was prepared by the co-precipitation method, and different amounts of copper (0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6 wt%) were loaded by incipient wetness impregnation. The results revealed that copper is well-dispersed onto the ceria-zirconia support for the catalysts with low copper loading and CuO particles were only identified by XRD in samples with 4 and 6% of copper. A very low loading of copper increases significantly the activity for the NO oxidation to NO2 with regard to the ceria-zirconia support and an optimum was found for a 4% CuO/ceria-zirconia composition, showing a very high activity (54% at 348 °C). The soot combustion rate at 400 °C obtained with the 2% CuO/ceria-zirconia catalyst is slightly lower to that of 1% Pt/alumina in terms of mass of catalyst but higher in terms of price of catalyst.

This work presents a comparative study between the catalytic performance of the 2% CuO/ceria-zirconia powder catalyst and the same catalyst supported on silicon carbide DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) towards NO oxidation reaction and soot combustion reaction. The ceria-zirconia catalyst was prepared by the co-precipitation method and 2 wt% copper was incorporated by the incipient wetness impregnation method. The catalyst was incorporated onto the ceramic support using a simple and organic solvent-free procedure by a simply dipping the DPF into an aqueous solution of the catalyst. The powder catalyst has been characterized using N2 adsorption at −196 °C, XRD and Raman Spectroscopy; whereas the catalytic coating morphology has been evaluated by SEM and the mechanical stability by an adherence test. Both catalyst configurations were tested for NO oxidation to NO2 and for soot combustion under NOx/O2. The results revealed that incorporation of the very active copper/ceria-zirconia catalyst onto SiC-DPF has been successfully achieved by a simple coating procedure. Furthermore, the catalytic coating has shown suitable mechanical, chemical and thermal stability. A satisfactory catalytic performance of the catalytic-coated filter was reached towards the NO oxidation reaction. Moreover, it was proved that the catalytic coating is stable and the corresponding coated DPF can be reused for several cycles of NO oxidation without a significant decrease in its activity. Finally, it was verified that the loose-contact mode is a good choice to simulate the catalytic performance of this active phase in a real diesel particulate filter.
