By means of two dimension beam propagation method (2D-BPM) with high order Pade approximation, behaviors of SOI waveguide based bend intersections with variant bending radius are simulated and analized. The result shows that crosstalk of intersections decreases with the increase of bending radius and intersecting angle. Furthermore, loss and crosstalk characteristics of bend intersections formed by sine bend, cosine bend and arc bend are compared. Sine bend based structures are proved that it can present lowest loss and smallest crosstalk properties among the three and may find their wide application in the design of bend intersections and other more complicated photonic devices and circuits.

A new fabrication technology for three-dimensionally buried silica on silicon optical waveguide based on deep etching and thermal oxidation is presented. Using this method, a silicon layer is left at the side of waveguide. The stress distribution and effective refractive index are calculated by using finite element method and finite different beam propagation method, respectively. The results indicate that the stress of silica on silicon optical waveguide fabricated by this method can be matched in parallel and vertical directions and stress birefringence can be effectively reduced due to the side-silicon layer.

A silicon-on-insulator based channel-shifted multimode interference coupler is designed and fabricated. A two dimensional beam propagation method is used to analyze the dependence of coupler′s performances on the width and length of the multimode waveguide. The device fabricated has a power shift ratio of 73 and an excess loss of about 2.2 dB. An enhancement of fabrication accuracies could further improve the coupler performances.

In this paper, we present simulation results of an electrooptical variable optical attenuator (VOA) inte-grated in silicon-on-insulator waveguide. The device is functionally based on free carriers absorption toachieve attenuation. Beam propagation method (BPM) and two-dimensional semiconductor device simu-lation tool PISCES-Ⅱ were used to analyze the dc and transient characteristics of the device. The devicehas a response time (including rise time and fall time) less than 200 ns, much faster than the thermoopticand micro-electromechanical systems (MEMSs) based VOAs.

A novel structure of MMI coupler with different background refractive index has been designed. With stronger optical confinement in multimode waveguides, more guided modes are excited to improve imaging quality. Two-dimensional finite difference beam propagation method (2-D FDBPM) was used to simulate this new structure and had proven that its imaging quality, in terms of power uniformity and excess loss, is much better than conventional structure. This structure can be applied in SOI rib waveguides by deep etching method.

A type of thermo-optic variable optical attenuator based on multimode interference coupler is proposed. The optical field propagation properties of the devices are simulated using finite difference beam propagation method. The propagation loss of the fabricated device is 2-4.2 dB at the wavelength range 1510-1610 nm. The total power consumption is 370 mW and the maximum attenuation is more than 25 dB, which almost can meet the requirements of optical fiber communication systems.

High-spin levels of 189Pt have been studied with the in-beam γ-spectroscopy method via the 176Yb(18O,5n) reaction at the beam energies of 88 and 95 MeV. The previously known νi-131/2 band has been confirmed, and its unfavored signature branch extended up to the 13/2+ state. Within the framework of the triaxial particle-rotor model, the νi-113/2 band is suggested to be associated with the 11/2[615] configuration, and to have triaxial deformation.

Spectra of the ionized oxygen atom were researched with the Pro-500i monochromator equipped with CCD. The beam foil method was used at energy of 2 MeV in a 2 x 1.7 Tandem accelerator. In this work, we report 201 spectral lines determined in the region 250-350 nm, and most spectral lines were attributed to n, l energy level transitions from O II to O IV atoms. Our experimental results are in good agreement with existing theoretical calculations. Many lines reported in this paper have not been measured in past experiments, and a majority of them are week transitional lines.

Gaussian beam is the asymptotic solution of wave equation concentred at the central ray. The Gaussian beam ray tracing method has many advantages over ray tracing method. Because of the prevalence of multipath and caustics in complex media, Kirchhoff migration usually can not get satisfactory images, but Gaussian beam migration can get better results. The Runge-Kutta method is used to carry out the raytracing, and the wavefront construction method is used to calculate the multipath wavefield. In this thesis, a new method to determine the starting point and initial direction of a new ray is proposed take advantage of the radius of curvature calculated by dynamic ray tracing method. The propagation characters of Gaussian beam in complex media are investigated. When Gaussian beam is used to calculate the Green function, the wave field near the source was decomposed in Gaussian beam in different direction, then the wave field at a point is the superposition of individual Gaussian beams.Migration aperture is the key factor for Kirchhoff migration. In this thesis, the criterion for the choice of optimum aperture is discussed taking advantage of stationary phase analysis. Two equivalent methods are proposed, but the second is more preferable.Gaussian beam migration based on dip scanning and its procedure are developed. Take advantage of the travel time, amplitude, and takeoff angle calculated by Gaussian beam method, the migration is accomplished.Using the proposed migration method, I carry out the numerical calculation of simple theoretical model, Marmousi model and field data, and compare the results with that of Kirchhoff migration. The comparison shows that the new Gaussian beam migration method can get a better result over Kirchhoff migration, with fewer migration noise and clearer image at complex structures.

The role of renewable energy in power systems is becoming more significant due to the increasing cost of fossil fuels and climate change concerns. However, the inclusion of Renewable Energy Generators (REG), such as wind power, has created additional problems for power system operators due to the variability and lower predictability of output of most REGs, with the Economic Dispatch (ED) problem being particularly difficult to resolve. In previous papers we had reported on the inclusion of wind power in the ED calculations. The simulation had been performed using a system model with wind power as an intermittent source, and the results of the simulation have been compared to that of the Direct Search Method (DSM) for similar cases. In this paper we report on our continuing investigations into using Genetic Algorithms (GA) for ED for an independent power system with a significant amount of wind energy in its generator portfolio. The results demonstrate, in line with previous reports in the literature, the effectiveness of GA when measured against a benchmark technique such as DSM.

A model for understanding the formation and propagation of modes in curved optical waveguides is developed. A numerical method for the calculation of curved waveguide mode profiles and propagation constants in two dimensional waveguides is developed, implemented and tested. A numerical method for the analysis of propagation of modes in three dimensional curved optical waveguides is developed, implemented and tested. A technique for the design of curved waveguides with reduced transition loss is presented. A scheme for drawing these new waveguides and ensuring that they have constant width is also provided. Claims about the waveguide design technique are substantiated through numerical simulations.
