A folding nonblocking 4 X 4 optical matrix switch in simplified-tree architecture was designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator wafer. To compress chip size, switch elements (SEs) were connected by total internal reflection mirrors instead of conventional S-bends. For obtaining smooth interfaces, potassium hydroxide (KOH) anisotropic chemical etching of silicon was employed. The device has a compact size of 20 X 3.2 mm(2) and a fast response of 8 +/- 1 mu s. Power consumption of 2 x 2 SE and excess loss per mirror were 145 mW and -1.1 dB, respectively. (c) 2005 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

A folding rearrangeable nonblocking 4 x 4 optical matrix switch was designed and fabricated on silicon-on-insulator wafer. To compress chip size, switch elements (SEs) were interconnected by total internal reflection (TIR) mirrors instead of conventional S-bends. For obtaining smooth interfaces, potassium hydroxide anisotropic chemical etching of silicon was utilized to make the matrix switch for the first time. The device has a compact size of 20 x 1.6 mm(2) and a fast response of 7.5 mu s. The power consumption of each 2 x 2 SE and the average excess loss per mirror were 145 mW and -1.1 dB, respectively. Low path dependence of +/- 0.7 dB in total excess loss was obtained because of the symmetry of propagation paths in this novel matrix switch.

Peculiar current jumps and hysteresis in current-voltage curves are reported in an illuminated heterostructure consisting basically of a thick AlAs layer and a narrow GaAs quantum well. These novel features come from the photon-assisted transfer of electron-hole pairs and the resultant charge polarization in the structure, mainly caused by the resonant Gamma-X coupling at the heterointerfaces. Using the transfer-matrix method, the simulated current density-voltage curve reproduces the main features of the experimental observations in the case where the influence of resonant Gamma-X coupling at the heterointerfaces is included, further confirming the physical mechanism involved. The structure presented here may be used as a new type of photonic memory cell and also as an optically controlled switch.

In this article, we report an optical fluoride probe based on microstructured polymer optical fibers (MPOFs) which is modified with morin-Al complex doped silica gel film. This probe is fabricated by sol-gel fluxion coating process. Sol solution doped with morin-Al is directly inhaled into array holes of MPOF and then forms morin-Al-gel matrix film in them. The sensing probe shows different fluorescence intensity to different fluoride ion concentrations in the aqueous solution. The range of response is 550 mmol/L, under the condition of pH 4.6. Thiosemicarbazone derivatives have been used as ion carriers for the preparation of PVC-matrix based mercury(II)-selective membrane sensors. The electrodes give near-Nernstian responses in the linear concentration range of 1.0×10-1-5.0×10-6 M with detection limits of the order of 10-6 M. The stable potentiometric signals are obtained within a short time period of 20-25s. The effect of different plasticizers has been studied and dioctylsebacate (DOS) found to give a better response in comparison to other plasticizers. Selectivity coefficient values (log KPotHg,M) have been evaluated using fixed interference method. Better selectivity for mercury(II) ions is observed over many of the monovalent (Na+, K+ and NH4+) and divalent ions (Mg2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Co2+, etc.). The sensors have also been used as indicator electrodes in potentiometric titration of mercury(II) ions with EDTA and its determination in synthetic water samples.

In this study, compositional dependence of age hardening response and tensile properties were investigated for Mg-10G(d-x)Y-0.4Zr (x = 1, 3, 5 wt.%) alloys. With increasing Y content, the age hardening response of the alloys enhanced and tensile properties increased. The Mg-10Gd-5Y-0.4Zr alloy exhibited maximum tensile strength and yield strength at aged-peak hardness, and the values were 302 MPa and 289 MPa at room temperature, and 340 MPa and 267 MPa at 250 degrees C, respectively. The strong peak age hardening was attributed to the precipitation of prismatic beta' plates in a triangular arrangement. The cubic shaped beta phase was also observed at grain boundaries. The remarkable improvement in strength is associated with a uniform and high dense distribution of beta' and cubic shaped beta precipitate phases in Mg matrix. Elongation of Mg-10Gd-0.4Zr alloys decreased with increasing Y content, and the elongation of Mg-10Gd-5Y-0.4Zr alloy was less than 3% below 250 degrees C, whereas the alloys containing I wt.% and 3 wt.% Y exhibited higher elongation than 5% at room temperature.

An amperometric tyrosinase enzyme electrode for the determination of phenols was developed by a simple and effective immobilization method using sol-gel techniques. A grafting copolymer was introduced into sol-gel solution and the composition of the resultant organic-inorganic composite material was optimized, the tyrosinase retained its activity in the sol-gel thin film and its response to several phenol compounds was determined at 0 mV vs. Ag/AgCl (sat. KCI). The dependences of the current response on pH, oxygen level and temperature were studied, and the stability of the biosensor was also evaluated. The sensitivity of the biosensor for catechol, phenol and p-cresol was 59.6, 23.1 and 39.4 muA/mM, respectively. The enzyme electrode maintained 73% of its original activity after intermittent use for three weeks when storing in a dry state at 4 degreesC. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A new type of tyrosinase biosensor was developed for the detection of phenolic compounds, based on the immobilization of tyrosinase in a sol-gel-derived composite matrix that is composed of titanium oxide sol and a grafting copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine. Tyrosinase entrapped in the composite matrix can retain its activity to a large extent owing to the good biocompatibility of the matrix. The parameters of the fabrication process and the variables of the experimental conditions for the enzyme electrode were optimized. The resulting sensor exhibited a fast response (20 s), high sensitivity (145.5 muA mmol(-1) 1) and good storage stability. A detection limit of 0.5 muM catechol was obtained at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3.

A tyrosinase-based amperometric biosensor using a self-gelatinizable graft copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine (PVA-g-PVP) as an immobilization matrix was constructed. The 4-vinylpyridine component of PVA-g-PVP enhances the adherence to a glassy carbon electrode surface. The content of 4-vinylpyridine in this immobilization matrix plays a key role in retaining the activity of tyrosinase. A simple, milder method was adopted by simply syringing the copolymer-tyrosinase aqueous solution on to the electrode surface and allowing water to evaporate at 4 degrees C in a refrigerator. Several parameters, including copolymer composition; pH, applied potential and enzyme membrane composition, ware optimized. The enzyme membrane composition can be varied to obtain higher sensitivity or a wider linear detection range. The biosensor was used for the determination of phenol, p-cresol and catechol. The biosensor exhibited excellent reproducibility, stability and sensitive response and can be used in flow injection analysis. The biosensor showed an extended linear range in hydrophilic organic solvents and it can be used in monitoring organic reaction processes. The analytical performance demonstrated this immobilization matrix is suitable for the immobilization of tyrosinase.

A graded piezoelectric composite consisting of a spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric inclusion imbedded in an infinite nonpiezoelectric matrix, with the physical properties of the graded spherical inclusion having a power-law profile with respect to the radial variable r, is studied theoretically. Under an external uniform electric field, the electric displacement field and the elastic stress tensor field of this spherically anisotropic graded piezoelectric composite are derived exactly by means of displacement separation technique, based on the governing equations in the dilute limit. A piezoelectric response mechanism, in which the effective piezoelectric response vanishes along the z direction (or x,y directions), is revealed in this kind of graded piezoelectric composites. Furthermore, it is found that the effective dielectric constant decreases (or increases) with the volume fraction p of the inclusions if the exponent parameter k of the grading profile is larger (or smaller) than a critical value. The processes of seismic wave propagation in phase space and one way wave extrapolation in frequency-space domain, if without dissipation, are essentially transformation under the action of one parameter Lie groups. Consequently, the numerical calculation methods of the propagation ought to be Lie group transformation too, which is known as Lie group method. After a fruitful study on the fast methods in matrix inversion, some of the Lie group methods in seismic numerical modeling and depth migration are presented here. Firstly the Lie group description and method of seismic wave propagation in phase space is proposed, which is, in other words, symplectic group description and method for seismic wave propagation, since symplectic group is a Lie subgroup and symplectic method is a special Lie group method. Under the frame of Hamiltonian, the propagation of seismic wave is a symplectic group transformation with one parameter and consequently, the numerical calculation methods of the propagation ought to be symplectic method. After discrete the wave field in time and phase space, many explicit, implicit and leap-frog symplectic schemes are deduced for numerical modeling. Compared to symplectic schemes, Finite difference (FD) method is an approximate of symplectic method. Consequently, explicit, implicit and leap-frog symplectic schemes and FD method are applied in the same conditions to get a wave field in constant velocity model, a synthetic model and Marmousi model. The result illustrates the potential power of the symplectic methods. As an application, symplectic method is employed to give synthetic seismic record of Qinghai foothills model. Another application is the development of Ray+symplectic reverse-time migration method. To make a reasonable balance between the computational efficiency and accuracy, we combine the multi-valued wave field & Green function algorithm with symplectic reverse time migration and thus develop a new ray+wave equation prestack depth migration method. Marmousi model data and Qinghai foothills model data are processed here. The result shows that our method is a better alternative to ray migration for complex structure imaging. Similarly, the extrapolation of one way wave in frequency-space domain is a Lie group transformation with one parameter Z and consequently, the numerical calculation methods of the extrapolation ought to be Lie group methods. After discrete the wave field in depth and space, the Lie group transformation has the form of matrix exponential and each approximation of it gives a Lie group algorithm. Though Pade symmetrical series approximation of matrix exponential gives a extrapolation method which is traditionally regarded as implicit FD migration, it benefits the theoretic and applying study of seismic imaging for it represent the depth extrapolation and migration method in a entirely different way. While, the technique of coordinates of second kind for the approximation of the matrix exponential begins a new way to develop migration operator. The inversion of matrix plays a vital role in the numerical migration method given by Pade symmetrical series approximation. The matrix has a Toepelitz structure with a helical boundary condition and is easy to inverse with LU decomposition. A efficient LU decomposition method is spectral factorization. That is, after the minimum phase correlative function of each array of matrix had be given by a spectral factorization method, all of the functions are arranged in a position according to its former location to get a lower triangular matrix. The major merit of LU decomposition with spectral factorization (SF Decomposition) is its efficiency in dealing with a large number of matrixes. After the setup of a table of the spectral factorization results of each array of matrix, the SF decomposition can give the lower triangular matrix by reading the table. However, the relationship among arrays is ignored in this method, which brings errors in decomposition method. Especially for numerical calculation in complex model, the errors is fatal. Direct elimination method can give the exact LU decomposition But even it is simplified in our case, the large number of decomposition cost unendurable computer time. A hybrid method is proposed here, which combines spectral factorization with direct elimination. Its decomposition errors is 10 times little than that of spectral factorization, and its decomposition speed is quite faster than that of direct elimination, especially in dealing with a large number of matrix. With the hybrid method, the 3D implicit migration can be expected to apply on real seismic data. Finally, the impulse response of 3D implicit migration operator is presented.
