Photoluminescence (PL) at room temperature has been achieved in amorphous thin films and powders of the TiO2-PbO system. They were prepared by the polymeric precursor method with [PbO]/[TiO2] molar ratios ranging from 0.0 to 1.0. The energy position of maximum PL emission and the PL intensity showed dependence on Pb concentration. The Pb addition suggests an increase in the number of nonbridging oxygens (NBO) in the amorphous TiO2 network. These results support the relationship between photoluminescence and structure in TiO2-based amorphous materials.

Vitreous samples containing high concentrations of WO3 (above 40% M) have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. These films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), perfilometry, X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), M-Lines and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. In this work, experimental parameters were established to obtain stable thin films showing a chemical composition close to the glass precursor composition and with a high concentration of WO3. These amorphous thin films of about 4 mu m in thickness exhibit a deep blue coloration but they can be bleached by thermal treatment near the glass transition temperature. Such bleached films show several guided modes in the visible region and have a high refractive index. Controlled crystallization was realized and thus it was possible to obtain WO3 microcrystals in the amorphous phase. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A set of optimized deposition conditions for the inner wall coating of fused silica tubes with amorphous selenium was elaborated. The method is based on the vapor transport deposition of pure elemental selenium on a cooled substrate held at liquid nitrogen temperatures. Morphological and structural examination of the deposited layer was performed by optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. Neutron activated selenium was used to monitor the deposition pattern and its stability under high gas flows. Monte Carlo simulations allowed the estimation of the different Se species composing the amorphous phase, at the given experimental deposition conditions. The versatility of the coating method presented in this work allows for the coating of tubes of different lengths and diameters, opening the way for several applications of amorphous selenium films in various fields.
Water-triggered spontaneous surface patterning in thin films of mexylaminotriazine molecular glasses
Resumo:
Surface patterning that occurs spontaneously during the formation of a thin film is a powerful tool for controlling film morphology at the nanoscale level because it avoids the need for further processing. However, one must first learn under which conditions these patterning phenomena occur or not, and how to achieve control over the surface morphologies that are generated. Mexylaminotriazine-based molecular glasses are small molecules that can readily form amorphous thin films. It was discovered that this class of materials can either form smooth films, or films exhibiting either dome or pore patterns. Depending on the conditions, these patterns can be selectively obtained during film deposition by spin-coating. It was determined that this behavior is controlled by the presence of water or, more generally, of a solvent in which the compounds are insoluble, and that the relative amount and volatility of this poor solvent determines which type of surface relief is obtained. Moreover, AFM and FT-IR spectroscopy have revealed that the thin films are amorphous independently of surface morphology, and no difference was observed at the molecular or supramolecular level. These findings make this class of materials and this patterning approach in general extremely appealing for the control of surface morphology with organic nanostructures.

Azobenzene-containing materials exhibit various photomechanical properties, including the formation of surface relief gratings (SRG) when irradiated with two interfering laser beams. In a recent study, a novel glass-forming derivative of Disperse Red 1 (DR1) with a mexylaminotriazine group was synthesized in high yield with a simple and efficient procedure, and showed the ability to form high-quality amorphous thin films with a high resistance to crystallization. Irradiation of films of this material yielded SRG with growth rates comparable to other reported azo materials. Herein, a series of closely related molecular glasses containing azobenzene chromophores with various absorption maxima ranging from 410 to 570 nm were synthesized, and their physical and photomechanical properties were studied. All materials studied showed the ability to form stable glassy phases, and irradiation with lasers emitting at various wavelengths allowed to perform a comparative study of SRG growth within a series of analogous chromophores.

The work presented in this thesis describes an investigation into the production and properties of thin amorphous C films, with and without Cr doping, as a low wear / friction coating applicable to MEMS and other micro- and nano-engineering applications. Firstly, an assessment was made of the available testing techniques. Secondly, the optimised test methods were applied to a series of sputtered films of thickness 10 - 2000 nm in order to: (i) investigate the effect of thickness on the properties of coatingslcoating process (ii) investigate fundamental tribology at the nano-scale and (iii) provide a starting point for nanotribological coating optimisation at ultra low thickness. The use of XPS was investigated for the determination of Sp3/Sp2 carbon bonding. Under C 1s peak analysis, significant errors were identified and this was attributed to the absence of sufficient instrument resolution to guide the component peak structure (even with a high resolution instrument). A simple peak width analysis and correlation work with C KLL D value confirmed the errors. The use of XPS for Sp3/Sp2 was therefore limited to initial tentative estimations. Nanoindentation was shown to provide consistent hardness and reduced modulus results with depth (to < 7nm) when replicate data was suitably statistically processed. No significant pile-up or cracking of the films was identified under nanoindentation. Nanowear experimentation by multiple nanoscratching provided some useful information, however the conditions of test were very different to those expect for MEMS and micro- / nano-engineering systems. A novel 'sample oscillated nanoindentation' system was developed for testing nanowear under more relevant conditions. The films were produced in an industrial production coating line. In order to maximise the available information and to take account of uncontrolled process variation a statistical design of experiment procedure was used to investigate the effect of four key process control parameters. Cr doping was the most significant control parameter at all thicknesses tested and produced a softening effect and thus increased nanowear. Substrate bias voltage was also a significant parameter and produced hardening and a wear reducing effect at all thicknesses tested. The use of a Cr adhesion layer produced beneficial results at 150 nm thickness, but was ineffective at 50 nm. Argon flow to the coating chamber produced a complex effect. All effects reduced significantly with reducing film thickness. Classic fretting wear was produced at low amplitude under nanowear testing. Reciprocating sliding was produced at higher amplitude which generated three body abrasive wear and this was generally consistent with the Archard model. Specific wear rates were very low (typically 10-16 - 10-18 m3N-1m-1). Wear rates reduced exponentially with reduced film thickness and below (approx.) 20 nm, thickness was identified as the most important control of wear.

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films with diamond like structures have been formed on different substrates at very low energies and temperatures by a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process employing acetylene as the precursor gas. The plasma source was of a cascaded arc type with Ar as carrier gas. The films were grown at very high deposition rates. Deposition on Si, glass and plastic substrates has been studied and the films characterized in terms of sp3 content, roughness, hardness, adhesion and optical properties. Deposition rates up to 20 nm/s have been achieved at substrate temperatures below 100°C. The typical sp3 content of 60-75% in the films was determined by X-ray generated Auger electron spectroscopy. Hardness, reduced modulus and adhesion were measured using a MicroMaterials Nano Test Indenter/Scratch tester. Hardness was found to vary from 4 to 13 GPa depending on deposition conditions. Adhesion was significantly influenced by the substrate temperature and in situ DC cleaning. Hydrogen content in the film was measured by a combination of the Fourier transform infrared and Rutherford backscattering techniques. Advantages of these films are: low ion energy and deposition temperature, very high deposition rates, low capital cost of the equipment and the possibility of film properties being tailored according to the desired application.

Despite considerable research to develop carbon based materials for biomedical applications, the toxicity of carbon remains a major concern. In order to address this issue as well as to investigate the cell fate processes of neural cells from the perspective of neural tissue engineering applications, the in vitro cytocompatibility of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) derived continuous carbon nanofibers and PAN derived carbon thin films were investigated both quantitatively and qualitatively using in vitro biochemical assays followed by extensive flow cytometry analysis. The experimental results of Schwann cell fate, i.e. cell proliferation, cell metabolic activity and cell apoptosis on amorphous carbon substrates are discussed in reference to the time dependent evolution of intracellular oxidative stress. Apart from providing evidence that an electrospun carbon nanofibrous substrate can physically guide the cultured Schwann cells, this study suggested that continuous carbon nanofibers and amorphous carbon films are not cytotoxic in vitro and do not significantly induce apoptosis of Schwann cells, but in fact even facilitate their proliferation and growth.

The high-kappa gate dielectrics, specifically amorphous films offer salient features such as exceptional mechanical flexibility, smooth surfaces and better uniformity associated with low leakage current density. In this work, similar to 35 nm thick amorphous ZrO2 films were deposited on silicon substrate at low temperature (300 degrees C, 1 h) from facile spin-coating method and characterized by various analytical techniques. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal the formation of amorphous phase ZrO2, while ellipsometry analysis together with the Atomic Force Microscope suggest the formation of dense film with surface roughness of 1.5 angstrom, respectively. The fabricated films were integrated in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) structures to check the electrical capabilities. The oxide capacitance (C-ox), flat band capacitance (C-FB), flat band voltage (V-FB), dielectric constant (kappa) and oxide trapped charges (Q(ot)) extracted from high frequency (1 MHz) C-V curve are 186 pF, 104 pF, 0.37V, 15 and 2 x 10(-11) C, respectively. The small flat band voltage 0.37V, narrow hysteresis and very little frequency dispersion between 10 kHz-1 MHz suggest an excellent a-ZrO2/Si interface with very less trapped charges in the oxide. The films exhibit a low leakage current density 4.7 x 10(-9)A/cm(2) at 1V. In addition, the charge transport mechanism across the MOSC is analyzed and found to have a strong bias dependence. The space charge limited conduction mechanism is dominant in the high electric field region (1.3-5 V) due to the presence of traps, while the trap-supported tunneling is prevailed in the intermediate region (0.35-1.3 V). Low temperature solution processed ZrO2 thin films obtained are of high quality and find their importance as a potential dielectric layer on Si and polymer based flexible electronics. This paper reviews the advances that flash lamp annealing brings to the processing of the most frequently used semiconductor materials, namely silicon and silicon carbide, thus enabling the fabrication of novel microelectronic structures and materials. The paper describes how such developments can translate into important practical applications leading to a wide range of technological benefits. Opportunities in ultra-shallow junction formation, heteroepitaxial growth of thin films of cubic silicon carbide on silicon, and crystallization of amorphous silicon films, along with the technical reasons for using flash lamp annealing are discussed in the context of state-of-the-art materials processing. © 2005 IEEE.

A series of silicon film samples were prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) near the threshold from amorphous to nanocrystalline state by adjusting the plasma parameters and properly increasing the reactions between the hydrogen plasma and the growing surface. The microstucture of the films was studied by micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The influences of the hydrogen dilution ratio of silane (R-H = [H-2]/[SiH4]) and the substrate temperature (T-s) on the microstructural and photoelectronic properties of silicon films were investigated in detail. With the increase of RH from 10 to 100, a notable improvement in the medium-range order (MRO) of the films was observed, and then the phase transition from amorphous to nanocrystalline phase occurred, which lead to the formation of diatomic hydrogen complex, H-2* and their congeries. With the increase of T-s from 150 to 275 degreesC, both the short-range order and the medium range order of the silicon films are obviously improved. The photoconductivity spectra and the light induced changes of the films show that the diphasic nc-Si/a-Si:H films with fine medium-range order present a broader light spectral response range in the longer wavelength and a lower degradation upon illumination than conventional a-Si:H films. Field emission (FE) from a single-layer ultra-thin semiconductor film cathode (SUSC) on a metal substrate has been investigated theoretically. The self-consistent quantum FE model is developed by synthetically considering the energy band bending and electron scattering. As a typical example, we calculate the FE properties of ultra-thin A1N film with an adjustable film thickness from 1 to 10 nm. The calculated results show that the FE characteristic is evidently modulated by varying the film thickness, and there is an optimum thickness of about 3 nm. Furthermore, a four-step FE mechanism is suggested such that the distinct FE current of a SUSC is rooted in the thickness sensitivity of its quantum structure, and the optimum FE properties of the SUSC should be attributed to the change in the effective potential combined with the attenuation of electron scattering.

Polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon) has been used as an important structural material for microelectro-mechnical systems (MEMS) because of its compatibility with standard integrated circuit (IC) processes. As the structural layer of micromechanical high resonance frequency (high-f) and high quality factor (high-Q) disk resonators, the low residual stress and low resistivity are desired for the polysilicon thin films. In the present work, we investigate the effect of deposition and annealing conditions on the residual stress and resistivity for in-situ deposited low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) polysilicon films. Low residual stress (-100 MPa) was achieved in in-situ boron-doped polysilicon films deposited at 570 degrees C and annealed at 1000 degrees C for 4 hr. The as-deposited amorphous polysilicon films were crystallized by the rapid thermal annealing and have the (111)-preferred orientation, the low tensile residual stress is expected for this annealed film, the detailed description on this work will be reported soon. The controllable residual stress and resistivity make these films suitable for high-Q and bigh-f micro-mechanical disk resonators.
