Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4, 8 and 14 mol% CaO, were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and impedance spectroscopy (IS) and tested in the carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of CaO-ZrO(2) solid solutions. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the support composition. The electrical properties of the support have a proportional effect on the catalytic activities. Catalytic tests were done at 800 degrees C for 6 h and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion depended on the CaO-ZrO(2) solid solution composition and its influence on supported NiO species. A direct relation was found between the variation in the electrical conductivity of the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt.% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4 mol%, 8 mol% and 12 mol% of Y(2)O(3), were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and tested as catalysts for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of a Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the composition of the support. Catalytic tests were conducted at 800 degrees C for 6 h, and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion rate depended on the composition of the Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution and its influence on the supported NiO species. A direct relation was observed between the variation in the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Catalysts containing NiO/MgO/ZrO(2) mixtures were synthesized by the polymerization method in a single step. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and physisorption of N(2) (BET) and then tested in the reforming of a model biogas (1.5CH4:1CO(2)) in the presence of air (1.5CH(4) + 1CO(2) + 0.25O(2)) at 750 degrees C for 6h. It was observed that the catalyst Ni20MZ performed better in catalytic processes than the well known catalysts, Ni/ZrO(2) and Ni/MgO, synthesized under the same conditions. The formation of solid solutions, MgO-ZrO(2) and NiO-MgO, increased the rate of conversion of reactants (CH(4) and CO(2)) into synthesis gas (H(2) + CO). The formation of oxygen vacancies (in samples containing ZrO(2) and MgO) seems to promote removal of the coke deposited on the nickel surface. The values of the H(2)/CO ratio were generally found to be slightly lower than stoichiometric, owing to the reverse water gas shift reaction occurring in parallel. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. ZrO(2), gamma-Al(2)O(3) and ZrO(2)/gamma-Al(2)O(3)-supported copper catalysts have been prepared, each with three different copper loads (1, 2 and 5 wt%), by the impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) with H(2), Raman spectroscopy and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The reduction of NO by CO was studied in a fixed-bed reactor packed with these catalysts and fed with a mixture of 1% CO and 1% NO in helium. The catalyst with 5 wt% copper supported on the ZrO(2)/gamma-Al(2)O(3) matrix achieved 80% reduction of NO. Approximately the same rate of conversion was obtained on the catalyst with 2 wt% copper on ZrO(2). Characterization of these catalysts indicated that the active copper species for the reduction of NO are those in direct contact with the oxygen vacancies found in ZrO(2). Supported nickel catalysts of composition Ni/Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) were synthesized in one step by the polymerization method and compared with a nickel catalyst prepared by wet impregnation. Stronger interactions were observed in the formed catalysts between NiO species and the oxygen vacancies of the Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) in the catalysts made by polymerization, and these were attributed to less agglomeration of the NiO during the synthesis of the catalysts in one step. The dry reforming of ethanol was catalyzed with a maximum CO(2) conversion of 61% on the 5NiYZ catalyst at 800 degrees C, representing a better response than for the catalyst of the same composition prepared by wet impregnation. The effect of the sintering method on the microstructural and electrical properties of (Pb(0.89)Nd(0.02)La(0.09))(Zr(0.65)Ti(0.35))O(3) (PNLZT) ceramics was studied by impedance spectroscopy. Structural and microstructural analyses were performed using x-ray and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Two different sintering routes were employed: the conventional and the hot-pressing sintering methods. The impedance analysis provided a convincing evidence for the existence of both grain (g) and grain boundary (gb) contributions to the conduction process. An equivalent circuit for the impedance behaviour has been proposed and discussed. The variation in the sintering method produces significant changes in the grain and grain boundary conductivities. For the grain effect, the main conduction mechanism has been associated with oxygen vacancy migration. Otherwise, for grain boundary conductivity the impedance behaviour has been discussed in terms of the brick-layer and the constriction resistance models (BLM and CRM, respectively).

Polycrystalline Ba0.5Sr0.5(Ti0.80Sn0.20)O-3 (BST:Sn) thin films with a perovskite structure were prepared by the soft chemical method on a platinum-coated silicon substrate from spin-coating technique. The resulting thin films showed a dense structure with uniform grain size distribution. The dielectric constant of the films estimated from C-V curve is around 1134 and can be ascribed to a reduction in the oxygen vacancy concentration. The ferroelectric nature of the film indicated by butterfly-shaped C-V curves and confirmed by the hysteresis curve, showed remnant polarization of 14 mu C/cm(2) and coercive field of 74 kV/cm at frequency of 1 MHz. At the same frequency, the leakage current density at 1.0 V is equal to 1.5 x 10(-7) A/cm(2). This work clearly reveals the highly promising potential of BST:Sn for application in memory devices. The nature of defects in polycrystalline Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (BLT) thin films with x=0.00, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 was evaluated by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements. The influence of oxygen vacancies and substitution of Bi for La atoms were discussed. In the BLT thin films, it was found that the oxygen ions at the metal-oxygen octahedral were much more stable than those at the [Bi2O2] layers. on the other hand, for Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) thin film, oxygen vacancies could be induced both at the titanium-oxygen octahedral and at the [Bi2O2] layers. The oxygen-vacancy defect pairs determined in BIT and Bi3.75La0.25Ti3O12 (BLT025) can pin the polarization of surrounding lattices leading to fatigue of capacitors. Meanwhile, the concentration of similar defect pairs is relatively low in heavily doped BIT films and then good fatigue resistance is observed.

Tin oxide is an n-type semiconductor material with a high covalent behavior. Mass transport in this oxide depends on the surface state promoted by atmosphere or by the solid solution of a non-isovalent oxide doping The sintering and grain growth of this type of oxide powder is then controlled by atmosphere and by extrinsic oxygen vacancy formation. For pure SnO2 powder the surface state depends only on the interaction of atmosphere molecules with the SnO2 surface. Inert atmosphere like argon or helium promotes oxygen vacancy formation at the surface due to reduction of SnO2 to SnO at the surface and liberation of oxygen molecules forming oxygen vacancies. As consequence surface diffusion is enhanced leading to grain coarsening but no densification. Oxygen atmosphere inhibits the SnO2 reduction decreasing the surface oxygen vacancy concentration. Addition of dopants with lower valence at sintering temperature creates extrinsic charged oxygen vacancies that promote mass transport at grain boundary leading to densification and grain growth of this polycrystalline oxide.

Thin films of undoped and Sb-doped (2 atg%) SnO2 have been prepared by sol-gel dip-coating technique on borosilicate glasses. Variation of photoconductivity excitation with wavelength and optical absorption indicate indirect bandgap transition with energy of ≅ 3.5 eV. Conductance as function of temperature indicates two levels of capture with 39 and 81 meV as activation energies, which may be related to an Sb donor and oxygen vacancy respectively. Electron trapping by these levels are practically destroyed by UV photoexcitation (305 nm) and heating in vacuum to 200°C. Gas analysis using a mass spectrometer indicates an oxygen related level, which may not be desorbed in the simpler O2 form.
