Esta dissertação descreve o estudo, concepção e desenvolvimento de uma aplicação baseada no sistema operativo Windows 8 que interage com um sistema domótico KNX, permitindo ao utilizador controlar a sua instalação domótica. Esta proposta, que combina a área de integração/instalação de sistemas domóticos e a de desenvolvimento de aplicações para Windows 8 e Windows 8 Phone, constitui um desafio particularmente interessante para quem tem experiência profissional nas duas áreas. A domótica surgiu na década de 70 como uma aplicação da eletrónica e das tecnologias da informação às instalações residenciais, comerciais e industriais. Esta nova área desencadeou uma revolução, não só, ao nível da produção e comercialização, mas, também, do ponto de vista do utilizador, ao promover a comodidade, segurança, personalização e o controlo de pessoas e bens. Os smartphones e tablets vieram permitir que o desenvolvimento de aplicações móveis de interacção com os sistemas domóticos. Ao longo desta dissertação são descritas e analisadas as múltiplas áreas de intervenção da domótica assim como as diferentes tecnologias de aplicação e mercados. Também são analisados os sistemas operativos que existentes, as respetivas cotas de mercado e os tipos de dispositivos disponíveis. Por último, a aplicação foi concebida, implementada e testada para verificar a correcta interacção com o sistema domótico KNX e as funcionalidades de controlo da instalação domótica.

For most people design is a mystery. The products of design are integrated into our daily lives to the point that design has become invisible to us. However. what is subsumed in design practice is a creative problem-solving process that is applicable as a teaching strategy as well as a method for teaching the subject of design. The purpose of this study was to inquire into the current classroom practice of Ontario Visual Arts and Technological Education teachers, understand the goals of Ontario government curriculum developers, and explore the position held by the professional design community on secondary school design education. Data for this study were collected from: (a) a textual analysis of 4 Ministry curriculum documents; (b) interviews with JO stakeholders; (c) unobtrusive observations and informal conversations conducted at 7 secondary school open house events; and (d) observation of 2 sessions of an AQ course for Design and Technology. The research design modeled the design process and was divided into 2 parts: a discovery or problem-finding phase and a discussion or problem-solving phase. The results showed that design is misunderstood and misused; it has become lost between visual arts and technology where neither program holds responsibility for its delivery; students mistake working on computers for design practice; and while there is a desire within the professional community to have a voice in secondary school design education. there is no forum for participation. The technology-driven paradigm shift taking place in society today calls for a new framework for tellching and practicing dcsign. Further research is required; howcvcr. in the meantime. secondary school educators might benefit from professional development and classroom support from the professional dcsign community.

La pratique du design industriel dans la province canadienne de l’Alberta est en pleine croissance. Ses activités sont principalement concentrées à Edmonton et à Calgary, qui sont les plus grandes villes de la province. On y trouve des studios de design de renom, des communautés de design complexes et des programmes universitaires de design bien établis. Cependant, la pratique du design industriel albertaine est sous-développée en comparaison avec celle du reste du Canada et il y a peu de recherches et de documentation sur le design industriel en Alberta. Dans ce projet de mémoire, la pratique du design industriel en Alberta a été explorée depuis une approche historique. Pour pallier le manque de documentation, la collecte de données a été faite par une recherche qualitative, des entretiens narratifs et une recherche quantitative statistique. Une base d’information historique sur le design industriel albertain a été établie puis située par rapport au développement de la pratique du design industriel ailleurs au Canada. Les facteurs, événements et tendances dans l’histoire de la pratique du design industriel en Alberta ont été identifiés. De plus, le développement de la pratique du design industriel de l’Alberta a été comparé à celui du Québec et de l’Ontario. Les retombées de cette étude indiquent que la pratique du design industriel en Alberta présente quatre domaines de spécialisations distincts se développant depuis les années 1980. La pratique du design industriel en Alberta est sous-développée en comparaison à celui du Québec et de l’Ontario, mais elle peut devenir plus compétitive, au niveau canadien, avec plus de soutien gouvernemental, de meilleures relations avec l’industrie manufacturière et les institutions académiques, une communauté de design plus unifiée et en portant une plus grande attention aux domaines les plus prometteurs de l’industrie. Ces informations supportent une meilleure compréhension de la pratique du design industriel en Alberta et pourront informer les praticiens, enseignants et administrateurs du domaine du design industriel dans la province. Finalement, le mémoire servira de base à d’autres projets de recherche sur les changements potentiels dans la pratique du design industriel en Alberta et l’étude du design canadien et des industries de design régionales.

Ce document présente les résultats d’une étude empirique sur l’utilisation de la vidéoconférence mobile selon le contexte de l’usager afin de proposer des lignes directrices pour la conception des interfaces des dispositifs de communication vidéo mobile. Grâce à un échange riche d’informations, ce type de communication peut amener un sentiment de présence fort, mais les interfaces actuelles manquent de flexibilité qui permettrait aux usagers d’être créatifs et d’avoir des échanges plus riches lors d’une vidéoconférence. Nous avons mené une recherche avec seize participants dans trois activités où leurs conversations, leurs réactions et leurs comportements ont été observés. Deux groupes de discussion ont aussi servi à identifier les habitudes développées à partir de leur utilisation régulière de la vidéoconférence. Les résultats suggèrent une différence importante entre l’utilisation de la caméra avant et la caméra arrière de l’appareil mobile, et la nécessité de fournir des outils qui offrent plus de contrôle sur l’échange dans la conversation. L’étude propose plusieurs lignes directrices de conception pour les interfaces de communication vidéo mobiles, concernant la construction du contexte mobile de l’utilisateur.

Purpose – This paper describes visitors' reactions to using an Apple iPad or smartphone to follow trails in a museum by scanning QR codes and draws conclusions on the potential for this technology to help improve accessibility at low-cost. Design/methodology/approach – Activities were devised which involved visitors following trails around museum objects, each labelled with a QR code and symbolised text. Visitors scanned the QR codes using a mobile device which then showed more information about an object. Project-team members acted as participant-observers, engaging with visitors and noting how they used the system. Experiences from each activity fed into the design of the next. Findings – Some physical and technical problems with using QR codes can be overcome with the introduction of simple aids, particularly using movable object labels. A layered approach to information access is possible with the first layer comprising a label, the second a mobile-web enabled screen and the third choices of text, pictures, video and audio. Video was especially appealing to young people. The ability to repeatedly watch video or listen to audio seemed to be appreciated by visitors with learning disabilities. This approach can have low equipment-cost. However, maintaining the information behind labels and keeping-up with technological changes are on-going processes. Originality/value – Using QR codes on movable, symbolised object labels as part of a layered information system might help modestly-funded museums enhance their accessibility, particularly as visitors increasingly arrive with their own smartphones or tablets.

Our employer, Gaddad, is a tattoo and piercing community that was created in 2006 with the basic idea to make it easier for people to get in touch with the tattoo artists and piercers from all over Sweden. With the homepage’s popularity at 2009 they decided to expand with the news page Inkzine. 2011 they contacted us with a plan to expand the homepage to Europe and then merge their two sites under the name Inkzine.The goal of this project was to create design suggestions for Gaddad / Inkzine that both the administration and the current users liked and would consider implementing on the website. In order to evaluate the current design and our suggestions we decided to use two questionnaires . The first questionnaire evaluated the currentdesign to provide us with information for the redesign. The second questionnaire evaluated our new suggestions.With these questionnaire we also carried out an analysis to see the differences in opinions among the users and also between the administration and the users.We also investigated other community homepages, company homepages that had been internationalized, and other tattoo homepages. To see what others had done to adapt to the international market and to investigate the design of tattoo homepages.We also did literary studies in redesign and internationalization, in order to obtain a theoretical foundation for our work.The results of the investigation of other homepages showed that in order to perform an internationalization of a web site no major changes to the looks were necessary, only linguistic changes. The rapid development of Web technologies has made the World Wide Web a huge information source. However, due to the lack of a well-defined underlying data model for Web documents, effectively and efficiently finding required information and managing Web data are usually tedious and difficult tasks when using conventional information retrieval and data management techniques. The Web page community, defined as a set of Web-based documents with its own logical and/or semantic structures, provides a flexible and effective approach to support Wed data management, information retrieval and applications. This book addresses using hyperlink information to discover Web page communities. The work establishes a uniform framework for hyperlink analysis and community construction. Algorithms, supporting mechanisms and data models are proposed in the book. This book should help shed some light on this new and exciting research and application area. It is useful to researchers and students in Web mining, Web data management and information retrieval, as well as to professionals who may be considering utilizing Web communities to improve their applications.

Appropriate, ethical, respectful depiction and referencing of Indigenous visual iconography has become an important issue around the world - especially when designers and their clients choose to visually represent national identity. This chapter for the book titled, agIdeas Research, Design for Business, highlights the need for governments, the private sector and the design community to show leadership in regard to appropriate representation and engagement with Indigenous knowledge. It is a sensitive area where guidance is needed to assist designers and their clients to engage appropriately with Indigenous culture when required.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the application in Brazil of a simple, low-cost procedure, developed in India by the 10/66 Dementia Research Group, for the identification of dementia cases in the community.DESIGN: Community-based dementia case-finding method.SETTING: Piraju, São Paulo, Brazil.PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-five community health workers were trained to identify dementia cases in 2,222 people aged 65 and older in Piraju, a Brazilian town with 27,871 inhabitants.MEAUREMENTS: After the training, the health workers prepared a list of possible cases that afterward an experienced psychiatrist clinically evaluated, according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV), criteria and the Clinical Dementia Rating.RESULTS: of the 72 cases that were clinically assessed, 45 met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for dementia. Therefore, the positive predictive value of this case finding method was 62.5%; the estimated frequency of dementia was 2%. Most of the confirmed cases met clinical criteria for Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.CONCLUSION: This simple method was appropriate to identify cases of dementia in the general population and can possibly be extended to other developing countries with limited resources to be applied in health programs.
