'Statesmanship of the highest order': Governor-General Ronald Munro-Ferguson and Australia's war of 1914-1918

A study of Governor-General Ronald Munro-Ferguson with particular attention to the views of modern historians. It describes his constitutional role and interventions in the Australian political process. It concludes that he was a conscientious King’s representative, with a deep interest in Australian political and social affairs and was accepted by members of both parties.

Re-Visioning bisexuality: rhizomatic cartographies of sex, gender and sexuality

This thesis is a sociological study of bisexuality and gender in Australian society. A theoretical frame informed by philosophers Deleuze and Guattari is deployed to analyse data from 47 interviews. It finds that the diversity of participants’ bisexual lives challenge conventional dichotomous understandings of heterosexual/homosexual, man/woman and masculine/feminine.

Bonhoeffer as Kierkegaard’s ‘single individual’ in a ‘state of exception’

This thesis interrogates the idea that violence can be justified as a ‘last resort’ through investigating the concept of ‘exception’ in the writing and action of the German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, in conjunction with the writings of Soren Kierkegaard and the Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt.

Examination of five case studies of current arts initiatives indicate significant positive outcomes for program participants and community members, particularly in the dimensions of social, cultural, and personal well-being. Models developed to evaluate outcomes indicate promising potential.

This new needs theory assists in the understanding children’s basic needs as well as a way to diagnose the unmet needs of children. Anosognosia and the very idea of psychodynamic neuroscience

In some mental illnesses the behavior to be understood suggests explanation in terms of motivational states that hold of the patient. I have demonstrated in this dissertation that there are no reasonable grounds to prohibit this style of explanation and that it has a potential place within contemporary psychological frameworks.

Women in politics in matrilineal society (a case study of West Sumatra, Indonesia)

 The study found that the West Sumatran matrilineal system offered limited support to female politicians who still experienced disadvantages in the national system. It concludes that there is a need to include aspects of local culture into regional electoral policy and for women to develop better political credential.

Indonesia's national parties and the representation of a diverse society

 This study explores laws that promote the nationalisation of Indonesia’s political parties, and considers what this means for the representation of a diverse society. Overall, the research finds that the laws have restricted the development of political parties, but not for the reasons commonly expected.

Measuring the economic consequences of racial discrimination in Australia

 Racial discrimination results in economic inefficiency. This thesis has investigated its impact and estimated, for the first time, the health-related costs attributable to racial discrimination. The study found that the Australian economy incurs substantial loss due to the burden of disease associated with the exposure of minorities to racial discrimination.
