A study of Governor-General Ronald Munro-Ferguson with particular attention to the views of modern historians. It describes his constitutional role and interventions in the Australian political process. It concludes that he was a conscientious King’s representative, with a deep interest in Australian political and social affairs and was accepted by members of both parties.

This thesis is a sociological study of bisexuality and gender in Australian society. A theoretical frame informed by philosophers Deleuze and Guattari is deployed to analyse data from 47 interviews. It finds that the diversity of participants’ bisexual lives challenge conventional dichotomous understandings of heterosexual/homosexual, man/woman and masculine/feminine.

By exploring and reviewing the constraints in maintaining the sustainability of aid projects, this research provides an actual description of an education-based aid project in Indonesia in the post-funding period.

This thesis explores the role of participatory arts in social change in Timor-Leste. Examination of five case studies of current arts initiatives indicate significant positive outcomes for program participants and community members, particularly in the dimensions of social, cultural, and personal well-being. Models developed to evaluate outcomes indicate promising potential.

In some mental illnesses the behavior to be understood suggests explanation in terms of motivational states that hold of the patient. I have demonstrated in this dissertation that there are no reasonable grounds to prohibit this style of explanation and that it has a potential place within contemporary psychological frameworks.

 The study found that the West Sumatran matrilineal system offered limited support to female politicians who still experienced disadvantages in the national system. It concludes that there is a need to include aspects of local culture into regional electoral policy and for women to develop better political credential.

 Racial discrimination results in economic inefficiency. This thesis has investigated its impact and estimated, for the first time, the health-related costs attributable to racial discrimination. The study found that the Australian economy incurs substantial loss due to the burden of disease associated with the exposure of minorities to racial discrimination.
