This work describes the preparation and characterization of composite materials obtained by the combination of natural rubber (NR) and carbon black (CB) in different percentages, aiming to improve their mechanical properties, processability, and electrical conductivity, aiming future applications as transducer in pressure sensors. The composites NR/CB were characterized through optical microscopy (OM), DC conductivity, thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMA), thermogravimetry (TGA), and stress-strain test. The electrical conductivity varied between 10(-9) and 10 S m(-1), depending on the percentage of CB in the composite. Furthermore, a linear (and reversible) dependence of the conductivity on the applied pressure between 0 and 1.6 MPa was observed for the sample with containing 80 wt % of NR and 20% of CB. The effect of La2O3 addition on the densification and electrical properties of the (0.9895 - x) SnO2 + 0.01 CoO + 0.0005 Nb2O5 + x La2O5 system, where x = 0.0005 or 0.00075, was considered in this study. The samples were sintered at 1300 degreesC for 2 and 4 h and a single SnO2 phase was identified by X-ray diffraction. Microstructure analysis by scanning electron microscopy showed that the affect of La2O3 addition is to decrease the SnO2 grain size. J versus E curves indicated that the system exhibits a varistor behavior and the effect of La2O3 is to increase both the non-linear coefficient (alpha) and the breakdown voltage (E-2). Considering the Schottky thermionic emission model the potential height and the width were estimated. The addition of small amounts of La2O3 to the basic system increases the potential barrier height and decreases both grain size and potential barrier width. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

It is known that the dielectric properties of BaTiO3 (BT) are strongly dependent on its grain size. Coarse-grained ceramics of pure BT showed lower dielectric constant at room temperature then fine grained. Many authors considered that when the grain size is lower than 700 nm, the lattice of BT changes from tetragonal to pseudocubic, and the dielectric constant value is very low. In the doped BT this effect is more complex, because it is necessary to consider also the influence of dopants. The grain size effect on the structure and dielectric properties of niobium-doped barium titanate was investigated. Niobium-doped barium titanate was prepared from powders obtained by doping of commercial barium titanate and from organometallic complex using citrates as precursors (Pechini procedure). The crystal and microstructure of sintered niobium-doped barium titanate were determined. Dielectric constant and dissipation factor were measured. The observation confirmed that the structure and properties are strongly dependent on grain size. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Structural, magnetic and spectroscopic data of a new trinuclear copper(II) complex with the ligand aspartame (apm) are described. [Cu(apm)(2)CU(mu-N,O:O'-apm)(2)(H2O)Cu(apm)(2)(H2O)]-5H(2)O crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P1 (#1) with a = 7.3300(1) angstrom, b = 15.6840(1) angstrom, c = 21.5280(1) angstrom, alpha = 93.02(1)degrees, beta = 93.21 (1)degrees, gamma = 92.66(1)degrees and Z = 1. Aspartame coordinates to Cu(II) through the carboxylate and beta-amino groups. The carboxylate groups of the two central ligands act as bidentate bridges in a syn-anti conformation while the carboxylate groups of the four peripheral ligands are monodentate in a syn conformation. The central copper ion is in a distorted square pyramidal geometry with the apical position being occupied by one oxygen atom of the water molecule. The two terminal copper(II) atoms are coordinated to the ligands in the same position but their coordination sphere differs from each other due to the fact that one copper atom has a water molecule in an apical position leading to an octahedral coordination sphere while the other copper atom is exclusively coordinated to aspartame ligands forming a distorted square pyramidal coordination sphere. Thermal analysis is consistent with the X-ray structure. EPR spectra and CV curves indicate a rupture of the trinuclear framework when this complex is dissolved in ethanol or DMF, forming a mononuclear species, with a tetragonal structure. The effect of LiNbO3 and KNbO3 seeds on the microstructure and dielectric characteristics of PMN ceramic prepared by columbite route have been investigated with the addition of 0, 1, and 2-wt% of seeds. X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and an impedance analyzer were used to characterize the influence of seeds on physical characteristics and dielectric properties of PMN. LiNbO3 -seeded PMN samples present a significant increase in the amount of perovskite phase. The addition of LiNbO3 seeds in sintered PMN ceramics at 1100degreesC during 4 h causes a decrease in the porosity and the amount of pyrochlore phase. Weight losses during sintering of PMN ceramics are suppressed more significantly for LiNbO3 -seeded PMN. T-m of PMN ceramics changes with seeds concentration. KNbO3 seeds displace T-m to lower temperature whereas LiNbO3 causes its elevation. Dielectric constants of approximately 13,000 at 1 kHz was measured at -5degreesC in PMN ceramics with 1-wt% of LiNbO3 seeds.

The BBT films were prepared by a spin-coating process from the polymeric precursor method (Pechini process). In order to study the influence of the temperature on the BBT microstructure and electrical properties, the films were deposited on platinum coated silicon substrates and annealed from 700degreesC to 800degreesC for 2 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The crystallinity of the films was examined by X-ray diffraction while the surface morphology was analysed by atomic force microscope. The dielectric properties and dissipation factor of BaBi2Ta2O9 films at 1 MHz were observed. The polarization-electric field hysteresis loops revealed the ferroelectric characteristics of BaBi2Ta2O9 thin films.

SrBi2(Ta0.5Nb0.5)(2)O-9 (SBTN) thin films were obtained by polymeric precursor method on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(1 0 0) substrates. The film is dense and crack-free after annealing at 700 degrees C for 2 h in static air. Crystallinity and morphological characteristic were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The films displayed rounded grains with a superficial roughness of 3.5 nm. The dielectric permittivity was 122 with loss tangent of 0.040. The remanent polarization (P-r) and coercive field (E-c) were 5.1 mu C/cm(2) and 96 kV/cm, respectively. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A series of alkyl sulfate detergents has been investigated in the presence of the cations Na +, methylviologen(2+) (MV 2+), 4-(cyanomethyl)pyridinium(1+) (CMP +), and tetramethylammonium (TMA +). The binding of these ions to the aqueous micellar assemblies has been measured through studies of luminescence quenching with the extramicellar probe, RuL 34-, where L = 4,4′-dicarboxy-2,2′-bipyridine. A general comparison of the alkyl sulfate aggregates with the nonquenching cations Na + and TMA + shows that the latter ion reduces the critical micelle concentration but at the same time depresses the ability of the detergent assemblies to bind or solubilize the hydrophobic quencher cations MV 2+ or CMP +. The reduced binding ability of the TMA + aggregates compared to that of the corresponding Na + soaps shows up largely in the form of a reduced favorable ΔS° for the solubilization in the case of the former. The results are in accord with a picture of the TMA + micelle as being more stable and more disordered than the corresponding assembly with Na + as the counterion. © 1989 American Chemical Society.

Strontium barium niobate (SBN) thin films were crystallized by conventional electric furnace annealing and by rapid-thermal annealing (RTA) at different temperatures. The average grain size of films was 70 nm and thickness around 500 nm. Using x-ray diffraction, we identified the presence of polycrystalline SBN phase for films annealed from 500 to 700 °C in both cases. Phases such as SrNb2O6 and BaNb2O6 were predominantly crystallized in films annealed at 500 °C, disappearing at higher temperatures. Dielectric and ferroelectric parameters obtained from films crystallized by conventional furnace and RTA presented essentially the same values.

The electrical conductivity changed from 10-9 to 10 Sm-1 depending on the percentage of CB in the composite. Besides, it was found a linear (and reversible) dependence of the conductivity on the applied pressure in the range from 0 to 1.6 MPa for the sample 80/20 (NR/CB wt%).
