A comparative study on the annealing of the ITO substrates and the organic layers were conducted on Organic light-emitting device (OLED). We fabricated four devices with the structure of Al/Alq(3)/TPD: PVK/NiO/ITO/Glass, and investigated the effect of heat on device performance by selectively annealing. When the TPD: PVK layers were annealed at 90 degrees C with 30 min annealing time and the ITO substrates were annealed at 300 degrees C with a constant annealing time (100 min). We find the OLED shows obvious performance improvement in brightness and current efficiency, which is attributable to the fact that annealing reduces defects and improves the interface structures of the organics and the organic/ITO interfaces. On the other hand, an appropriate annealing would slow the transportation of the hole, thus finally leads to more balanced electron and hole.

The high-spin states of Pm-140 have been investigated through the reaction Te-126(F-19, 5n) at a beam energy of 90 MeV. A previous level scheme based on the 8(-) isomer has been updated with spin up to 23 (h) over bar. A total of 22 new levels and 41 new transitions were identified. Six collective bands were observed. Five of them were expanded or re-constructed, and one of them was newly identified. The systematic signature splitting and inversion of the yrast pi h(11/2)circle times vh(11/2) band in Pr and Pm odd-odd isotopes has been discussed. Based on the systematic comparison, two Delta I = 2 bands were proposed as double-decoupled bands; other two bands with strong Delta I = 1 M1 transitions inside the bands were suggested as oblate bands with gamma similar to -60 degrees; another band with large signature splitting has been proposed with oblate-triaxial deformation with gamma similar to -90 degrees. The characteristics for these bands have been discussed.

Two-dimensional (2-D) gold networks were spontaneously formed at the air-water interface after HAuCl4 reacted with fructose at 90 degrees C in a sealed vessel, in a reaction in which fructose acted as both a reducing and a protecting agent. Through fine-tuning of the molar ratio of HAuCl4 to fructose, the thus-formed 2-D gold networks can be changed from a coalesced pattern to an interconnected pattern. In the coalesced pattern, some well-defined single-crystalline gold plates at the micrometer-scale could be seen, while in the interconnected pattern, many sub-micrometer particles and some irregular gold plates instead of well-defined gold plates appeared. It is also found that the 2-D gold networks in the form of an interconnected pattern can be used as substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) because of the strong localized electromagnetic field produced by the gaps between the neighboring particles in the 2-D gold networks.

Colloidal CdSe and CdS quantum dots were synthesized at low temperatures (60-90 degrees C) by a two-phase approach at a toluene-water interface. Oil-soluble cadmium myristate (Cd-MA) was used as cadmium source, and water-soluble Na2S, thiourea, NaHSe, Na2SeSO3, and selenourea were used as sulfur and selenium sources, respectively. When a cadmium precursor in toluene and a selenium precursor in water were mixed, CdSe nanocrystals were achieved at a toluene-water interface in the range of 1.2-3.2 nm in diameter. Moreover, we also synthesized highly luminescent CdSe/CdS core-shell quantum dots by a two-phase approach using poorly reactive thiourea as sulfur source in an autoclave at 140 degrees C or under normal pressure at 90 degrees C. Colloidal solutions of CdSe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals exhibit a photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) up to 42% relative to coumarin 6 at room temperature.

The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns of isothermally crystallized Nylon 1212 show that gamma-form crystals form below 90 degrees C and the alpha-form crystals call exist above 140 degrees C. In the temperature range of 90-140 degrees C, the a-form gamma-form crystals coexist. Variable-temperature WAXD exhibits that the nylon 1212 gamma-form does not show crystal and transition on heating, while a-form isothermally crystallized at 160 degrees C exhibits Brill transition at a little higher than 180 degrees C on heating. The multiple melting behaviors of Nylon 1212 isothermally crystallized from melt come from a complex mechanism of different crystal structures, dual lamellar population and melting-recrystallization. In polarized optical microscope (POM) observations, Nylon 1212 isothermally crystallized at 175 degrees C shows the ringed banded spherulites. However, at temperatures below 160 degrees C the ringed handed image disappears, and cross-extinct spherulites are formed.

Scanning probe microscopy was used to simultaneously determine the molecular chain structure and intrinsic mechanical properties, including anisotropic elastic modulus and friction, for lamellae of highly oriented high-density polyethylene (HDPE) obtained by the melt-drawn method. The molecular-scale image of the highly oriented lamellae by friction force microscopy (FFM) clearly shows that the molecular chains are aligned parallel to the drawing direction, and the periodicities along and perpendicular to the drawing direction are 0.26 and 0.50 nm, respectively. The results indicate that the exposed planes of the lamellae resulting from the melt-drawn method are (200), which is consistent with results of transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. Because of the high degree of anisotropy in the sample, coming from alignment of the molecular chains along the drawing direction, the measured friction force, F, determined by FFM is strongly dependent on the angle, theta, between the scanning direction and the chain axis. The force increases as theta is increased from 0 degrees (i.e., parallel to the chain axis) to 90 degrees (i.e., perpendicular to the chain axis). The structural anisotropy was also found to strongly influence the measurements of the transverse chain modulus of the polymer by the nanoindentation technique. The measured value of 13.8 GPa with transverse modulus was larger than the value 4.3 GPa determined by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, which we attributed to anisotropic deformation of the lamellae during nanoindentation measurements that was not accounted for by the elastic treatment we adopted from Oliver and Pharr. The present approach using scanning probe microscopy has the advantage that direct correlations between the nanostructure, nanotribology, and nanomechanical properties of oriented samples can be determined simultaneously and simply.

The crystallization behaviors of poly (3-dodecylthiophene) (P3DDT) under two different oriented solidification conditions, i.e.. two different relative relations (90 degrees and 180 degrees) between the directions of gravity and solidification, were investigated. X-ray diffraction results reveal that although similar layered structures are formed, under the condition of the relative relation 180 degrees. temperature gradient has greater effects on the perfect degree of the layered structures of P3DDT. It also can be concluded that after recrystallization, the layered structures of P3DDT can be improved at relative relation 90 degrees, but the orderly degree of the arrangements of alkyl side chains are not improved yet, even is reduced for both of the oriented solidification conditions.

An organic-inorganic hybrid solid, (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26, has been hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Dark green crystals crystallize in the orthorhombic system, space group Pna21, a = 24.164(5), b = 18.281(4), c = 11.877(2) Angstrom, alpha = 90 degrees, beta = 90 degrees, gamma = 90 degrees, V= 5247(2) Angstrom (3), Z = 4, lambda (MoK alpha) = 0.71073 Angstrom (R(F) = 0.0331 for 5353 reflections). Data were collected on a Siemens P4 four-circle diffractometer at 293 K in the range 1.69 degrees < theta < 25.04 degrees using the omega -scan technique. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined by full-matrix least squares on F-2 using SHELXL-93. The structure of this compound consists of discrete (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2)Mo8O26 clusters, constructed from beta -octamolybdate subunits ((Mo8O26)(4-)) covalently bonded to two (Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2))(2+) coordination complexes via bridging oxo groups that connect two adjacent molybdenum sites. Polyimides were prepared from diamines: 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamine (3MPDA) and 2,3,4,5-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (4MPDA). 1,4-Bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride (HQDPA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 3,3'-4,4'-diphenylsulphone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SO(2)PDA), 3,3',4,4'-diphenylsulphide tetracarboxylic dianhydride (SPDA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA), and 2,2'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexa-fluoroisopropane dianhydride (6FDA) were used as dianhydride. The gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2 and N-2 through the polyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. The results show that as methyl and trifluoromethyl substitution groups densities increase from 7.73 x 10(-3) molcm(-3) to 13.50 x 10(-3)molcm(-3), the peameability of H-2 increases 10-fold at 60% loss of permselectivity of H-2/N-2 however, the permeability of O-2 increases 20-fold at 20% loss of permselectivity of O-2/N-2. For O-2/N-2 separation, PMDA-3MPDA has similar performance to 6FDA-3MPDA and 6FDA-4MPDA; all have higher permeabilities for O-2 than normal polyimides, and the P(O-2)/alpha(O-2/N-2) trade-off relationships lie on the upper bound line for polymers. A series of copolyimides were prepared from 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylenediamines (3MPDA), 3,3',4,4'-benzophenone tetracarboxyl dianhydride (BTDA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA). Modification of the copolyimides by ultraviolet irradiation were carried out. Gas permeabilities of H-2, O-2, and N-2 through the copolyimides and photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were measured at temperatures from 30 to 90 degrees C. The relationships between gas permeabilities and temperature are in agreement with the Arrhenius equation. The structure of photochemically crosslinked copolyimides were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and gel measurement methods. Linear relationships between both log P and E-p and the volume fraction of PMDA-3MPDA exist. Photochemically crosslinking modification result in a decrease in gas permeability and an increase in E-p and alpha(H-2/N-2) for all the copolyimides. For H-2/N-2 separation, photochemically crosslinked copolyimides are of higher gas permeabilities and permselectivities simultaneously than normal polyimides. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Experimental electron diffraction patterns and high resolution images were used to determine the space group and unit cell dimensions of 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakispentyloxytriphenylene. Subsequently the molecular conformation was calculated by energy minimized package in Cerius2. Using this method, we got the HPT crystal structure: space group: P6/mmm; lattice type: hexogonal; the lattice parameters are a = b = 20.3 angstrom, c = 3.52 angstrom, = = 90 degrees, = 120 degrees. The core of HPT is not perpendicular to the column. The angle between a axis and HPT core plane is 9 degrees which cannot be seen in b-c projection. The simulated ED patterns and HREM images are good agreement with the experimental ED patterns and HREM images.
