Central European marine to brackish ostracod and benthic foraminiferal phenetic similarities between seven areas have been calculated (Jaccard index) for the early Chattian, late Chattian (Late Oligocene) and Aquitanian (Early Miocene) time slices. The results demonstrate the existence of three (micro-) faunal palaeobiogeographic units: a northern unit, the Upper Rhine Subprovince (URSP for Ostracoda; or Upper Rhine Area, URA for Foraminifera; encompassing the Mainz Basin, northern Upper Rhine Graben and Hanau Basin/Wetterau) and the Western Paratethys. Progressive isolation of the URSP is indicated by reduced indices that bottomed in the basal Miocene, when connections appear to be completely interrupted (Ostracoda) or reduced to a few cosmopolitan species (Foraminifera). The interpretations are, to a large extent, in agreement with other palaeontological data (e.g. molluscs, fish). The general isolation trend is not always continuous for ostracod or foraminiferal assemblages.

Decentralization process became prominent in Bhutan since early 1980s. Starting with an account of historical precedents for decentralized authority, the paper gives theoretical perspectives and factual descriptions of this process. Limiting itself to a discussion of broader social and political issues, the paper interprets decentralization as an approach towards diversity and pluralism among different communities that is shaped as a dynamics between peasants and civil servants.

Following a Royal Edict to adopt universal suffrage in election for local government institutions, maiden elections were held in 199 gewogs (counties) in Bhutan in 2002 to elect their chief executives. This paper gives an account of this first time event in a country where most villagers had never seen secret ballots and poll booths. It synthesizes detailed data, mostly qualitative, collected soon after the election was over, and assesses aspects of electoral participation that His Majesty the King of Bhutan has introduced steadily to deepen democracy. Beginning with a glance at the territorial organization of the Bhutanese state within which the counties are embedded, the paper compares the electoral results with the relevant election rules.

ABSTRACT This Grade End Project has as fundamental objective the improvement and deployment of a decision support system for evaluating children language development from 0 to 6 years of age. This system is mainly formed by an application designed and built using a modular and reusable software component architecture. The application will be used by pediatricians for evaluating children´s speech development and also by neuro-pediatricians, speech therapists and early childhood intervention team members, for consulting previous evaluations and for validating system´s proposed decision. The system is web based and stores its information in a database. Likewise, the system is supported by a conceptual model or ontology previously developed to infer the appropriate decision for language evaluation. The system also includes user management functions.

tRNA pseudouridine synthase I (ΨSI) catalyzes the conversion of uridine to Ψ at positions 38, 39, and/or 40 in the anticodon loop of tRNAs. ΨSI forms a covalent adduct with 5-fluorouracil (FUra)-tRNA (tRNAPhe containing FUra in place of Ura) to form a putative analog of a steady-state intermediate in the normal reaction pathway. Previously, we proposed that a conserved aspartate of the enzyme serves as a nucleophilic catalyst in both the normal enzyme reaction and in the formation of a covalent complex with FUra-tRNA. The covalent adduct between FUra-tRNA and ΨSI was isolated and disrupted by hydrolysis and the FUra-tRNA was recovered. The target FU39 of the recovered FUra-tRNA was modified by the addition of water across the 5,6-double bond of the pyrimidine base to form 5,6-dihydro-6-hydroxy-5-fluorouridine. We deduced that the conserved aspartate of the enzyme adds to the 6-position of the target FUra to form a stable covalent adduct, which can undergo O-acyl hydrolytic cleavage to form the observed product. Assuming that an analogous covalent complex is formed in the normal reaction, we have deduced a complete mechanism for ΨS.

Lipocalin-type prostaglandin D synthase (L-PGDS) is localized in the central nervous system and male genital organs of various mammals and is secreted as β-trace into the closed compartment of these tissues separated from the systemic circulation. In this study, we found that the mRNA for the human enzyme was expressed most intensely in the heart among various tissues examined. In human autopsy specimens, the enzyme was localized immunocytochemically in myocardial cells, atrial endocardial cells, and a synthetic phenotype of smooth muscle cells in the arteriosclerotic intima, and accumulated in the atherosclerotic plaque of coronary arteries with severe stenosis. In patients with stable angina (75–99% stenosis), the plasma level of L-PGDS was significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the great cardiac vein (0.694 ± 0.054 μg/ml, n = 7) than in the coronary artery (0.545 ± 0.034 μg/ml), as determined by a sandwich enzyme immunoassay. However, the veno-arterial difference in the plasma L-PGDS concentration was not observed in normal subjects without stenosis. After a percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty was performed to compress the stenotic atherosclerotic plaques, the L-PGDS concentration in the cardiac vein decreased significantly (P < 0.05) to 0.610 ± 0.051 μg/ml at 20 min and reached the arterial level within 1 h. These findings suggest that L-PGDS is present in both endocardium and myocardium of normal subjects and the stenotic site of patients with stable angina and is secreted into the coronary circulation.
