Gravitational phase separation is a common unit operation found in most large-scale chemical processes. The need for phase separation can arise e.g. from product purification or protection of downstream equipment. In gravitational phase separation, the phases separate without the application of an external force. This is achieved in vessels where the flow velocity is lowered substantially compared to pipe flow. If the velocity is low enough, the denser phase settles towards the bottom of the vessel while the lighter phase rises. To find optimal configurations for gravitational phase separator vessels, several different geometrical and internal design features were evaluated based on simulations using OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The studied features included inlet distributors, vessel dimensions, demister configurations and gas phase outlet configurations. Simulations were conducted as single phase steady state calculations. For comparison, additional simulations were performed as dynamic single and two-phase calculations. The steady state single phase calculations provided indications on preferred configurations for most above mentioned features. The results of the dynamic simulations supported the utilization of the computationally faster steady state model as a practical engineering tool. However, the two-phase model provides more truthful results especially with flows where a single phase does not determine the flow characteristics.

L’Europe engendre des transformations majeures de l’État national, influence sa structure politique, sa conception de la démocratie et du droit, et produit des effets sur les rapports majorité minorités. Elle a pour effet d’éloigner l’État national du modèle traditionnel de l’État-Nation ethniquement ou culturellement homogène en l’amenant à reconnaître la pluralité de ses composantes nationales. Ces mutations sont le résultat du processus même d’intégration communautaire et des politiques de régionalisation et de décentralisation que favorisent les institutions européennes. Soumis au double processus d’intégration supranationale et de désagrégation infranationale, l’État national se transforme. Son rapport avec les minorités, également. L’Europe commande des aménagements de la diversité. Pour y arriver, elle impose un droit à la différence, lequel s’inscrit toujours dans la protection générale des droits de l’homme mais vise spécifiquement à reconnaître des droits identitaires ou poly ethniques aux personnes appartenant à des minorités, en tant que groupe, dans le but évident de les protéger contre la discrimination et l’intolérance. En faisant la promotion de ce droit à la différence, l’Europe propose un modèle alternatif à l’État-Nation traditionnel. La nation (majorité) peut désormais s’accommoder de la diversité. La nation n’est plus seulement politique, elle devient socioculturelle. En faisant la promotion du principe de subsidiarité, l’Europe incite à la décentralisation et à la régionalisation. En proposant un droit de la différence, l’Union européenne favorise la mise au point de mécanismes institutionnels permanents où la négociation continue de la normativité juridique entre groupes différents est possible et où l’opportunité est donnée aux minorités de contribuer à la définition de cette normativité. Le pluralisme juridique engendré par la communautarisation reste par ailleurs fortement institutionnel. L’État communautarisé détient encore le monopole de la production du droit mais permet des aménagements institutionnels de l’espace public au sein d’un ensemble démocratique plus vaste, donc l’instauration d’un dialogue entre les différentes communautés qui le composent, ce qui aurait été impensable selon la théorie classique de l’État-nation, du droit moniste et monologique. Ainsi, assistons-nous à la transformation progressive dans les faits de l’État-nation en État multinational. La question des minorités soulève un problème de fond : celui de l'organisation politique minoritaire. La volonté de respecter toutes les identités collectives, de donner un statut politique à toutes les minorités et de satisfaire toutes les revendications particularistes n’a pas de fin. L’État-Nation n’est certes pas le meilleur –ni le seul- modèle d’organisation politique. Mais l’État multinational constitue-t-il une alternative viable en tant que modèle d’organisation politique ?

Le lien entre le spectre de la matrice de transfert de la formulation de spins du modèle de Potts critique et celui de la matrice de transfert double-ligne de la formulation de boucles est établi. La relation entre la trace des deux opérateurs est obtenue dans deux représentations de l'algèbre de Temperley-Lieb cyclique, dont la matrice de transfert de boucles est un élément. Le résultat est exprimé en termes des traces modifiées, qui correspondent à des traces effectuées dans le sous-espace de l'espace de représentation des N-liens se transformant selon la m ième représentation irréductible du groupe cyclique. Le mémoire comporte trois chapitres. Dans le premier chapitre, les résultats essentiels concernant les formulations de spins et de boucles du modèle de Potts sont rappelés. Dans le second chapitre, les propriétés de l'algèbre de Temperley-Lieb cyclique et de ses représentations sont étudiées. Enfin, le lien entre les deux traces est construit dans le troisième chapitre. Le résultat final s'apparente à celui obtenu par Richard et Jacobsen en 2007, mais une nouvelle représentation n'ayant pas été étudiée est aussi investiguée.

Les récepteurs couplés aux protéines GRCPG sont une des plus grandes familles de récepteur membranaire codifié par le génome humain et certainement la plus grande famille de récepteurs. Localisés au niveau des membranes plasmiques, ils sont responsables d’une grande variété de réponses cellulaires. L’activation de ces derniers par des ligands était traditionnellement associée à un changement de conformation de la protéine, passant d’un état inactif à un état actif. Toutefois, certaines observations entraient en contradiction avec cette théorie et laissaient supposer la présence de plusieurs conformations actives du récepteur. Ces différentes conformations pouvaient être actives pour certaines voies de signalisation ou de régulation et inactives pour d’autres. Ce phénomène, initialement appelé agoniste dirigé ou « biased agonism », est maintenant décrit comme étant la sélectivité fonctionnelle des ligands des RCPG. Cette sélectivité des voies de signalisation et de régulation permettrait en théorie de développer des ligands capables de cibler seulement les voies de signalisation et de régulation responsable des effets thérapeutiques sans activer les voies responsables des effets secondaires ou indésirables. Le récepteur delta opiacé (DOR) est un RCPG impliqué dans la gestion de la douleur chronique. L’action analgésique de ses ligands est toutefois soumise à un effet de tolérance produite lors de leur utilisation à long terme. Cet effet secondaire limite l’utilisation thérapeutique de ces médicaments. Cette thèse s’est donc intéressée à la sélectivité fonctionnelle des ligands du DOR afin d’évaluer la possibilité de réduire les effets de tolérance produits par ces molécules. En premier lieu, nous avons déterminé que le DOR peut être stabilisé dans plusieurs conformations actives dépendantes du ligand qui le lie et ces conformations possèdent différents profils d’activation des voies de signalisation et de régulation. En deuxième lieu, nous avons déterminé que les différents ligands du DOR stabilisent des conformations du complexe récepteur/protéine G qui ne concordent pas avec la théorie des récepteurs à deux états, suggérant plutôt la présence d’une multitude de conformations actives. Finalement, nous avons démontré que ces différentes conformations interagissaient de façon distincte avec les protéines de régulation des RCPG; le ligand favorisant le retour du récepteur à la membrane produisant moins de désensibilisation et moins de tolérance aiguë à l’analgésie que le ligand favorisant la séquestration du récepteur à l’intérieur de la cellule. Les résultats de cette thèse démontrent que la sélectivité fonctionnelle des ligands opiacés pourrait être utilisée dans le développement de nouveau analgésique produisant moins de tolérance.

Why did a majority of French voters reject the Treaty Establishing a Constitution for Europe in the 2005 referendum? We argue here that the collective mobilization of the left-wing ‘No’ camp made the decisive difference through its formation of ‘Collectifs pour le non’, a coalition which facilitated the public expression of an anti-liberal and pro-European position capable of bringing together the Green and Socialist electorates, along with other parts of the left. Using a comprehensive analysis of the multi-organizational field of protest constituted by the mobilization of the left-wing ‘No’ camp, we show first that the mobilization was a ‘European affair’, in the sense that it developed a pro-European position in the context of struggles against liberal forces. Second, we show that the mobilization was also a ‘French’ affair because it relied on the high valuation of the ‘national’ mode of belonging, through the defence of the French state model.

In this paper we study the evolution of the kinetic features of the martensitic transition in a Cu-Al-Mn single crystal under thermal cycling. The use of several experimental techniques including optical microscopy, calorimetry, and acoustic emission, has enabled us to perform an analysis at multiple scales. In particular, we have focused on the analysis of avalanche events (associated with the nucleation and growth of martensitic domains), which occur during the transition. There are significant differences between the kinetics at large and small length scales. On the one hand, at small length scales, small avalanche events tend to sum to give new larger events in subsequent loops. On the other hand, at large length scales the large domains tend to split into smaller ones on thermal cycling. We suggest that such different behavior is the necessary ingredient that leads the system to the final critical state corresponding to a power-law distribution of avalanches.

Nanoparticles are of immense importance both from the fundamental and application points of view. They exhibit quantum size effects which are manifested in their improved magnetic and electric properties. Mechanical attrition by high energy ball milling (HEBM) is a top down process for producing fine particles. However, fineness is associated with high surface area and hence is prone to oxidation which has a detrimental effect on the useful properties of these materials. Passivation of nanoparticles is known to inhibit surface oxidation. At the same time, coating polymer film on inorganic materials modifies the surface properties drastically. In this work a modified set-up consisting of an RF plasma polymerization technique is employed to coat a thin layer of a polymer film on Fe nanoparticles produced by HEBM. Ball-milled particles having different particle size ranges are coated with polyaniline. Their electrical properties are investigated by measuring the dc conductivity in the temperature range 10–300 K. The low temperature dc conductivity (I–V ) exhibited nonlinearity. This nonlinearity observed is explained on the basis of the critical path model. There is clear-cut evidence for the occurrence of intergranular tunnelling. The results are presented here in this paper

El Plan Colombia fue diseñado como un paquete de ayuda internacional para la búsqueda de la paz en un marco de colaboración multilateral. Tras una negociación bilateral de dos años entre Colombia y Estados Unidos, el Plan concentró sus objetivos en la lucha contra el narcotráfico. Este trabajo pretende mostrar en qué consistió este cambio y describir el significado de la política del Plan. Se plantea que la política está determinada por la concepción del desarrollo como seguridad (Duffield, 2001 y 2002). Para ello, se realiza un análisis comparativo documental entre el primer texto del Plan Colombia, incluido en el Plan Nacional de Desarrollo de 1998, y el texto definitivo hecho por el gobierno en el 2000. La monografía argumenta que la ayuda otorgada está determinada por la lucha internacional contra las drogas y un nuevo modelo de Estado que implica tanto replantear las relaciones sociales a nivel local como una reflexión acerca de la soberanía estatal en el marco de nuevas tendencias globales.

The motion of adsorbate molecules across surfaces is fundamental to self-assembly, material growth, and heterogeneous catalysis. Recent Scanning Tunneling Microscopy studies have demonstrated the electron-induced long-range surface-migration of ethylene, benzene, and related molecules, moving tens of Angstroms across Si(100). We present a model of the previously unexplained long-range recoil of chemisorbed ethylene across the surface of silicon. The molecular dynamics reveal two key elements for directed long-range migration: first ‘ballistic’ motion that causes the molecule to leave the ab initio slab of the surface traveling 3–8 Å above it out of range of its roughness, and thereafter skipping-stone ‘bounces’ that transport it further to the observed long distances. Using a previously tested Impulsive Two-State model, we predict comparable long-range recoil of atomic chlorine following electron-induced dissociation of chlorophenyl chemisorbed at Cu(110)

We investigate the bilayer pre-transition exhibited by some lipids at temperatures below their main phase transition, and which is generally associated to the formation of periodic ripples in the membrane. Experimentally we focus on the anionic lipid dipalmytoylphosphatidylglycerol (DPPG) at different ionic strengths, and on the neutral lipid dipalmytoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC). From the analysis of differential scanning calorimetry traces of the two lipids we find that both pre- and main transitions are part of the same melting process. Electron spin resonance of spin labels and excitation generalized polarization of Laurdan reveal the coexistence of gel and fluid domains at temperatures between the pre- and main transitions of both lipids, reinforcing the first finding. Also, the melting process of DPPG at low ionic strength is found to be less cooperative than that of DPPC. From the theoretical side, we introduce a statistical model in which a next-nearest-neighbor competing interaction is added to the usual two-state model. For the first time, modulated phases (ordered and disordered lipids periodically aligned) emerge between the gel and fluid phases as a natural consequence of the competition between lipid-lipid interactions. The nonadiabatic photochemistry of 6-azauracil has been studied by means of the CASPT2//CASSCF protocol and double-zeta plus polarization ANO basis sets. Minimum energy states, transition states, minimum energy paths, and surface intersections have been computed in order to obtain an accurate description of several potential energy hypersurfaces. It is concluded that, after absorption of ultraviolet radiation (248 nm), two main relaxation mechanisms may occur, via which the lowest (3)(pi pi*) state can be populated. The first one takes place via a conical intersection involving the bright (1)(pi pi*) and the lowest (1)(n pi*) states, ((1)pi pi*/(1)n pi*)(CI), from which a low energy singlet-triplet crossing, ((1)n pi*/(3)pi pi*)(STC), connecting the (1)(n pi*) state to the lowest (3)(pi pi*) triplet state is accessible. The second mechanism arises via a singlet-triplet crossing, ((1)pi pi*/(3)n pi*)(STC), leading to a conical intersection in the triplet manifold, ((3)n pi*/(3)pi pi*)(CI), evolving to the lowest (3)(pi pi*) state. Further radiationless decay to the ground state is possible through a (gs/(3)pi pi*)(STC).

The primary objective of this work is to obtain a CIO¿s Critical Competencies model which could be applied to Brazilian CIO. This study was conducted by an explanatory research in a quantitative approach. Theoretical studies were done to understand CIO¿s environment, his identity, his career and organizational relationship. The analysis was based on six CIO¿s competencies models which describe how this professional could have a better performance. The intention of this approach was to provide a better understanding about the research problem. Then a meta-model was done as well as a survey. Once applied on Internet, the survey had 111 valid respondents, all Brazilian CIOs. To obtain the final model statistical factorial analysis was applied to the answers. Each identified factor in the model corresponds to a critical competency for Brazilian CIO. The model was submitted to hypotheses tests trying to establish what is the relation between each resultant factor and the time in the role for each respondent as well as his company size. This study has emerged a CIO critical competencies model to the Brazilian CIO, regarding his good performance.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal a obtenção de um modelo de Competências Críticas que possa ser aplicado ao CIO brasileiro. Para isso foi realizada uma pesquisa de natureza explanatória por meio de abordagem quantitativa. Para atingir este objetivo, foram feitos estudos teóricos relacionados ao ambiente do CIO, sua identidade, seu desenvolvimento na carreira, bem como seu relacionamento com sua organização e com fornecedores. Para efeito de análise foi considerado nesta pesquisa um conjunto de seis modelos encontrados na literatura mundial que descrevem as competências necessárias ao desempenho profissional do CIO, buscando assim, obter-se um melhor entendimento do problema de pesquisa. A partir daí, foi proposto um metamodelo de competências críticas e elaborado um questionário, sendo este o instrumento de pesquisa que foi utilizado neste estudo. Aplicado o questionário a partir da Internet, obteve-se uma participação de 111 respondentes válidos, sendo todos CIOs brasileiros. Uma vez efetuada a coleta de dados, foram adotados testes estatísticos relativos à Análise Fatorial, com o propósito de obter-se um modelo definitivo. Neste modelo encontrado, cada fator identificado representa uma competência crítica para o CIO brasileiro. Foram também testadas hipóteses a partir do modelo identificado, apurando qual a relação existente entre a importância atribuída aos fatores resultantes e o tempo de atuação de cada respondente como CIO, bem como o porte das empresas em que atuou. Como resultado do estudo, estabeleceu-se um modelo de competências críticas aplicável ao CIO brasileiro, associado ao seu bom desempenho nas suas atribuições.

Este ensaio identifica referenciais preferenciais para a interpretação do marco regulatório do setor bancário brasileiro. O texto parte da transição do modelo de Estado brasileiro nas últimas duas décadas e dos seus reflexos sobre o direito administrativo bancário. O argumento apresentado é o de que o intérprete do marco regulatório bancário deve guiar-se a partir de uma perspectiva que defino como teleológica e insularizada, porém limitada pelas normas e princípios constitucionais que resguardam as liberdades individuais dos agentes privados ante o arbítrio do Estado.

o modelo de Estado empresário começou a dar sinais de esgotamento no início da década de 80~ desde então, iniciou-se um sucateamento do parque industrial estatal. em função disto, o governo decidiu que, para atender às necessidades de investimentos, seria preciso repassar estas empresas para o setor privado. A aplicação desta nova orientação foi instrumentada pela criação do Programa Nacional de Privatização no governo Collor. Este programa, no entanto, não ficou restrito a este período, tendo sido continuado ao longo do governo Itamar Franco, assim como do Presidente Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Apesar dos vários focos de resistência que surgiram no decorrer do processo, houve resultados positivos na economia em função da desestataização. Um dos principais objetivos a ser alcançado pelo PND tem sido a redução da dívida global do setor públiCo, tanto interna quanto externamente, visando a reestruturação das finanças governamentais que, por sua vez, implica em menor necessidade de financiamento para o pagamento de juros da dívida pública. Esta dissertação avalia o Programa nacional de Desestatização do início de sua criação em 1990, até 1995. Das 74 empresas incluidas no programa, 41 foram privatizaas durante este período, total este que inclui a venda de empresas controladas pela Petroquisa e Petrofértil. o primeiro setor a ser totalmente privatizado foi o siderúrgico, que se encontra representado neste trabalho pela análise dos processos de privatização da U siminas e da Acesita, que se tomaram exemplos de sucesso da administração privada. Os processos de privatização da Usiminas e da Acesita foram analisados em termos da preparação das empresas para serem vendidas, situação financeira, realização do leilão em si e os resultados obtidos com este processo. Além disto, foi desenvolvida uma análise dos principais problemas enfrentados pelo setor siderúrgico antes da privatização, assim como demonstrou-se a importância da privatização destas empresas para que os mesmos fossem solucionados.
