With the widespread of social media websites in the internet, and the huge number of users participating and generating infinite number of contents in these websites, the need for personalisation increases dramatically to become a necessity. One of the major issues in personalisation is building users’ profiles, which depend on many elements; such as the used data, the application domain they aim to serve, the representation method and the construction methodology. Recently, this area of research has been a focus for many researchers, and hence, the proposed methods are increasing very quickly. This survey aims to discuss the available user modelling techniques for social media websites, and to highlight the weakness and strength of these methods and to provide a vision for future work in user modelling in social media websites.

One of the most vexing questions facing researchers interested in the World Wide Web is why users often experience long delays in document retrieval. The Internet's size, complexity, and continued growth make this a difficult question to answer. We describe the Wide Area Web Measurement project (WAWM) which uses an infrastructure distributed across the Internet to study Web performance. The infrastructure enables simultaneous measurements of Web client performance, network performance and Web server performance. The infrastructure uses a Web traffic generator to create representative workloads on servers, and both active and passive tools to measure performance characteristics. Initial results based on a prototype installation of the infrastructure are presented in this paper.

Single-page applications have historically been subject to strong market forces driving fast development and deployment in lieu of quality control and changeable code, which are important factors for maintainability. In this report we develop two functionally equivalent applications using AngularJS and React and compare their maintainability as defined by ISO/IEC 9126. AngularJS and React represent two distinct approaches to web development, with AngularJS being a general framework providing rich base functionality and React a small specialized library for efficient view rendering. The quality comparison was accomplished by calculating Maintainability Index for each application. Version control analysis was used to determine quality indicators during development and subsequent maintenance where new functionality was added in two steps. The results show no major differences in maintainability in the initial applications. As more functionality is added the Maintainability Index decreases faster in the AngularJS application, indicating a steeper increase in complexity compared to the React application. Source code analysis reveals that changes in data flow requires significantly larger modifications of the AngularJS application due to its inherent architecture for data flow. We conclude that frameworks are useful when they facilitate development of known requirements but less so when applications and systems grow in size.

Il problema dell'antibiotico-resistenza è un problema di sanità pubblica per affrontare il quale è necessario un sistema di sorveglianza basato sulla raccolta e l'analisi dei dati epidemiologici di laboratorio. Il progetto di dottorato è consistito nello sviluppo di una applicazione web per la gestione di tali dati di antibiotico sensibilità di isolati clinici utilizzabile a livello di ospedale. Si è creata una piattaforma web associata a un database relazionale per avere un’applicazione dinamica che potesse essere aggiornata facilmente inserendo nuovi dati senza dover manualmente modificare le pagine HTML che compongono l’applicazione stessa. E’ stato utilizzato il database open-source MySQL in quanto presenta numerosi vantaggi: estremamente stabile, elevate prestazioni, supportato da una grande comunità online ed inoltre gratuito. Il contenuto dinamico dell’applicazione web deve essere generato da un linguaggio di programmazione tipo “scripting” che automatizzi operazioni di inserimento, modifica, cancellazione, visualizzazione di larghe quantità di dati. E’ stato scelto il PHP, linguaggio open-source sviluppato appositamente per la realizzazione di pagine web dinamiche, perfettamente utilizzabile con il database MySQL. E’ stata definita l’architettura del database creando le tabelle contenenti i dati e le relazioni tra di esse: le anagrafiche, i dati relativi ai campioni, microrganismi isolati e agli antibiogrammi con le categorie interpretative relative al dato antibiotico. Definite tabelle e relazioni del database è stato scritto il codice associato alle funzioni principali: inserimento manuale di antibiogrammi, importazione di antibiogrammi multipli provenienti da file esportati da strumenti automatizzati, modifica/eliminazione degli antibiogrammi precedenti inseriti nel sistema, analisi dei dati presenti nel database con tendenze e andamenti relativi alla prevalenza di specie microbiche e alla chemioresistenza degli stessi, corredate da grafici. Lo sviluppo ha incluso continui test delle funzioni via via implementate usando reali dati clinici e sono stati introdotti appositi controlli e l’introduzione di una semplice e pulita veste grafica.

EUMETSAT (www.eumetsat.int) e’ l’agenzia europea per operazioni su satelliti per monitorare clima, meteo e ambiente terrestre. Dal centro operativo situato a Darmstadt (Germania), si controllano satelliti meteorologici su orbite geostazionarie e polari che raccolgono dati per l’osservazione dell’atmosfera, degli oceani e della superficie terrestre per un servizio continuo di 24/7. Un sistema di monitoraggio centralizzato per programmi diversi all’interno dell’ambiente operazionale di EUMETSAT, e’ dato da GEMS (Generic Event Monitoring System). Il software garantisce il controllo di diverse piattaforme, cross-monitoring di diverse sezioni operative, ed ha le caratteristiche per potere essere esteso a future missioni. L’attuale versione della GEMS MMI (Multi Media Interface), v. 3.6, utilizza standard Java Server Pages (JSP) e fa uso pesante di codici Java; utilizza inoltre files ASCII per filtri e display dei dati. Conseguenza diretta e’ ad esempio, il fatto che le informazioni non sono automaticamente aggiornate, ma hanno bisogno di ricaricare la pagina. Ulteriori inputs per una nuova versione della GEMS MMI vengono da diversi comportamenti anomali riportati durante l’uso quotidiano del software. La tesi si concentra sulla definizione di nuovi requisiti per una nuova versione della GEMS MMI (v. 4.4) da parte della divisione ingegneristica e di manutenzione di operazioni di EUMETSAT. Per le attivita’ di supporto, i test sono stati condotti presso Solenix. Il nuovo software permettera’ una migliore applicazione web, con tempi di risposta piu’ rapidi, aggiornamento delle informazioni automatico, utilizzo totale del database di GEMS e le capacita’ di filtri, insieme ad applicazioni per telefoni cellulari per il supporto delle attivita’ di reperibilita’. La nuova versione di GEMS avra’ una nuova Graphical User Interface (GUI) che utilizza tecnologie moderne. Per un ambiente di operazioni come e’ quello di EUMETSAT, dove l’affidabilita’ delle tecnologie e la longevita’ dell’approccio scelto sono di vitale importanza, non tutti gli attuali strumenti a disposizione sono adatti e hanno bisogno di essere migliorati. Allo stesso tempo, un’ interfaccia moderna, in termini di visual design, interattivita’ e funzionalita’, e’ importante per la nuova GEMS MMI.

Según datos publicados por eMarketer, casi el 25% del total de la inversión publicitaria mundial para el 2014 estará dirigida a medios digitales. Los medios de comunicación tradicionales están sumidos desde algún tiempo en una profunda crisis. En los comienzos de Internet, los protagonistas de este sector han creído en la red como un medio de publicación de contenidos en una única dirección, esto es la web 1.0, personas conectándose a páginas web. El típico lector de revista y seminario se ha convertido en un nuevo consumidor con necesidades muy distintas. El lector de un medio tradicional se encuentra con contenido cerrado, sin posibilidad de ser filtrado, que busca dirigir su opinión. Con el método tradicional no es posible ni personalizar el contenido ni la experiencia de uso. De ahí el nacimiento de la web 2.0, personas conectándose a personas (redes sociales). En un futuro cercano, van a triunfar las empresas, sectores y marcas que sepan adaptarse a la llegada de los social media, y que además de desarrollar su línea de negocio habitual, se conviertan en plataformas para la conversación y la construcción de contenidos en colaboración. En este proyecto voy a desarrollar el caso particular de una empresa de telecomunicaciones con una estrategia que use los social media como plataforma de atención al cliente, y para interaccionar también con su almacén en DHL. Los servicios añadidos que dicha empresa de telecomunicaciones ofrece a sus seguidores, clientes externos e internos se pueden agrupar en las siguientes funcionalidades: Hacer un volcado del sistema de gestión de incidencias de una empresa de telecomunicaciones en las redes sociales, a través de mensajes privados. Dichos mensajes privados se enviarán a las páginas de Facebook y Twitter de los clientes. Seguimiento por parte del cliente de puestas en marcha de los nuevos servicios a través de mensajes privados en Facebook y Twitter. Mediante este servicio el cliente podrá comprobar a través de las redes sociales el estado de su pedido e intercambiar información de utilidad con la empresa. Desarrollar a través de las redes sociales una herramienta de marketing para interaccionar con los clientes y posibles seguidores. A través de los canales de los social media se proporciona a los seguidores información de valor sobre novedades del mercado de las telecomunicaciones, soporte técnico, dudas, consejos sobre implementaciones técnicas, equipos de telecomunicaciones,.etc.Es decir, crear una plataforma de conversación entre usuarios, que aporte a los seguidores conocimientos y soluciones útiles para la problemática de sus negocios. Usar Facebook como base de datos y medio de comunicación entre nuestra empresa de telecomunicaciones y el almacén externalizado en DHL. Supongo que la primera pregunta que debo responder sería, ¿por qué un cliente de una empresa de telecomunicaciones estaría interesado en seguir a su proveedor a través de redes sociales? Facebook tiene en 2014 1,28 billones de usuarios activos. Twitter, la cuarta plataforma social por número de usuarios tras Facebook, alcanzó los 255 millones de usuarios en los primeros meses de 2014. La segunda red social en número de seguidores es Youtube, con un billón de usuarios. El 61,5% de los usuarios de Facebook visita la red todos los días. Los twitteros envían 110 millones tweets por día, tienen fama de muy activos, especialmente por la mañana. En 60 días, se sube más contenido de vídeo a YouTube que el producido por las tres principales cadenas de televisión estadounidense durante 60 años. Como conclusión, las redes sociales están ganando cada día más terreno, es un entorno de comunicación bidireccional en auge cada vez más extendido, por lo cual los usuarios no tienen que dedicar tiempo extra a conocer la herramienta de atención al cliente de su empresa, al usar ésta un canal fácil, conocido, rápido, versátil y gratuito como son las redes sociales. ABSTRACT. Social media are platforms of online communication where content is created by users themselves using technologies of web 2.0, which facilitate the editing, publication and the exchange of information, so that the social media are democratizing communications. According to data published by eMarketer, nearly 25% of the total global ad spend for 2014 will target digital media. The traditional media are trapped for some time in deep crisis. In the early days of the internet, the players of the sector have believed in the network as a means of publishing content in a single direction, this is the web 1.0, connecting people to websites. The typical magazine reader has become a new consumer with very different needs. Traditional medium readers encounter a closed content, unable to be filtered, which seeks handle their opinion. The traditional method doesn’t allow to customize the content and user experience. Hence the birth of Web 2.0, connecting people to people. In the near future, will succeed companies, sectors and brands who can adapt to the advent of social media, and further to develop their line of business as usual, become platforms for conversation and building collaborative content. In this project I will develop the particular case of a telecommunications company with a strategy to use social media as a platform for Customer Service, and also to interact with DHL warehouse. The additional services that the company offers telecommunications followers, external and internal customers can be grouped into the following functionality: Make a dump of the incident management system of a telecommunications company in social networks through private messages. These private messages are sent Facebook and Twitter clients. Monitoring by the client launched new services through private messages on Facebook and Twitter. Through this service, customers can check through the social networks of your order status and share useful information with the company. Develop through social media as a marketing tool to interact with customers and potential followers.Our telco will provide to followers through social media channels valuable information on market developments in telecommunications, technical support, questions, advice on technical implementations, telecommunications equipment,etc. Then we create a platform for discussion between users, to provide followers useful knowledge and solutions to their business problems. Use Facebook as a database and means of communication between our telco and outsourced telecommunications in DHL warehouse. I guess the first question that must be answered is why a customer of a telecommunications company would be interested in following your provider via social networks. Facebook has 1.28 billion active users in 2014. Twitter, the fourth social platform for many users after Facebook reached 255 million users in the first months of 2014. The second social network on number of followers is YouTube, with a billion users. 61.5% of Facebook users visit the network every day. The twitter users send 110 million tweets per day, have a reputation for very active, especially in the morning. In 60 days, it is produced more video content to YouTube by the three major US television for 60 years. In conclusion, social networks are gaining more ground every day. It is an environment of two-way communication on the rise, so users do not have to spend extra time to learn the tool of Customer Care telco, by using this easy, known, fast, versatile and free channels as are social networks.

Esta investigación aborda el consumo que los jóvenes universitarios de España y Brasil realizan de las publicaciones para tabletas. A través del estudio de seis casos –las revistas españolas Don, VisàVis y Quality Sport, y los vespertinos brasileños O Globo a Mais, de Río de Janeiro; Estadão Noite, de Sao Paulo; y Diário do Nordeste Plus, de Fortaleza– se aplica una metodología cualitativa, el test de usabilidad, para detectar qué aspectos ralentizan y entorpecen la navegación en las nuevas generaciones de usuarios de medios móviles. A pesar de la influencia de las revistas impresas en la configuración de las publicaciones para tableta, los datos muestran que el usuario necesita “entrenarse” para conocer unas opciones de interacción a veces poco intuitivas o para las que carece de la madurez visual necesaria. Por ello las publicaciones más sencillas obtienen los mejores resultados de usabilidad.

Sammanfattning: Ensidesapplikationer har historiskt sett påverkats av starka marknadskrafter som pådriver snabba utvecklingscykler och leveranser. Detta medför att kvalitetskontroll och förändringsbar kod, som är viktiga faktorer för förvaltningsbarhet, blir lidande. I denna rapport utvecklar vi två funktionellt ekvi-valenta ensidesapplikationer med AngularJS och React samt jämför dessa applikationers förvaltningsbarhet enligt ISO/IEC 9126. AngularJS och React representerar två distinkta angreppsätt på webbutveckling, där AngularJS är ett ramverk med mycket färdig funktionalitet och React ett mindre bibliotek specialiserat på vyrendering. Kvalitetsjämförelsen utfördes genom att beräkna förvaltningsbarhetsindex för respektive applikation. Versionshanteringsanalys användes för att bestämma andra kvalitetsindikatorer efter den initiala utvecklingen samt två efterföljande underhållsarbeten. Resultaten visar inga markanta skillnader i förvaltningsbarhet för de initiala applikationerna. I takt med att mer funktionalitet lades till sjönk förvaltnings-barhetsindex snabbare för AngularJS-applikationen, vilket motsvarar en kraftigare ökning i komplexitet jämfört med React-applikationen. Versionshanteringsanalys visar att ändringar i dataflödet kräver större modifikationer för AngularJS-applikationen på grund av dess förbestämda arkitektur. Utifrån detta drar vi slutsatsen att ramverk är användbara när de understödjer utvecklingen mot kända krav men att deras nytta blir begränsad ju mer en applikation växer i storlek.

Cipher Cities was a practice-led research project developed in 3 stages between 2005 and 2007 resulting in the creation of a unique online community, ‘Cipher Cities’, that provides simple authoring tools and processes for individuals and groups to create their own mobile events and event journals, build community profile and participate in other online community activities. Cipher Cities was created to revitalise peoples relationship to everyday places by giving them the opportunity and motivation to create and share complex digital stories in simple and engaging ways. To do so we developed new design processes and methods for both the research team and the end user to appropriate web and mobile technologies. To do so we collaborated with ethnographers, designers and ICT researchers and developers. In teams we ran a series of workshops in a wide variety of cities in Australia to refine an engagement process and to test a series of iteratively developed prototypes to refine the systems that supported community motivation and collaboration. The result of the research is 2 fold: 1. a sophisticated prototype for researchers and designers to further experiment with community engagement methodologies using existing and emerging communications technologies. 2. A ‘human dimensions matrix’. This matrix assists in the identification and modification of place based interventions in the social, technical, spatial, cultural, pedagogical conditions of any given community. This matrix has now become an essential part of a number of subsequent projects and assists design collaborators to successfully conceptualise, generate and evaluate interactive experiences. the research team employed practice-led action research methodologies that involved a collaborative effort across the fields of interaction design and social science, in particular ethnography, in order to: 1. seek, contest, refine a design methodology that would maximise the successful application of a dynamic system to create new kinds of interactions between people, places and artefacts’. 2. To design and deploy an application that intervenes in place-based and mobile technologies and offers people simple interfaces to create and share digital stories. Cipher Cities was awarded 3 separate CRC competitive grants (over $270,000 in total) to assist 3 stages of research covering the development of the Ethnographic Design Methodologies, the development of the tools, and the testing and refinement of both the engagement models and technologies. The resulting methodologies and tools are in the process of being commercialised by the Australasian CRC for Interaction Design.

Online Nail Artist (ONA) project aims to create a web-based application for nail salon customers. The application will help customers to customize their hands virtually and find suitable nail colors. The main research question is to reconfigure user experience in relation to product service in terms of customization of user needs. As results, the key function of the application will be to customize a virtual hand image by selecting a matched skin tone, a nail length, and a nail shape in accordance with their hands. The objectives of the project proceeding are to 1) identify customers’ experience in relation to the product features through preliminary research on existing products; 2) create a conceptual framework of the project development in order to reflect the user experience identified; and 3) present a mock up which include key features of the ONA for the future development.

‘Everybody is science conscious these days’ – so started the inaugural week of Frontiers of Science, a self described ‘intelligently presented and attractively drawn’ science-based comic strip published in the Sydney Morning Herald from 1961 to 1982 and ultimately syndicated to daily newspapers around the world. An archive of the first 200 Frontiers of Science comic strips (1961−65) has been made freely available online through an initiative of the University of Sydney Library. While the 1960s public interest in evolution, space exploration, and the Cold War have given way to the twenty-first century concerns about global warming, genetic engineering, and alternative energy sources, it is fair to say that everybody is still science conscious. Frontiers of Science provides an interesting and nostalgic insight into 1960s popular science through an unusual mode of dissemination.

Usability in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) is normally understood as the simplicity and clarity with which the interaction with a computer program or a web site is designed. Identity management systems need to provide adequate usability and should have a simple and intuitive interface. The system should not only be designed to satisfy service provider requirements but it has to consider user requirements, otherwise it will lead to inconvenience and poor usability for users when managing their identities. With poor usability and a poor user interface with regard to security, it is highly likely that the system will have poor security. The rapid growth in the number of online services leads to an increasing number of different digital identities each user needs to manage. As a result, many people feel overloaded with credentials, which in turn negatively impacts their ability to manage them securely. Passwords are perhaps the most common type of credential used today. To avoid the tedious task of remembering difficult passwords, users often behave less securely by using low entropy and weak passwords. Weak passwords and bad password habits represent security threats to online services. Some solutions have been developed to eliminate the need for users to create and manage passwords. A typical solution is based on generating one-time passwords, i.e. passwords for single session or transaction usage. Unfortunately, most of these solutions do not satisfy scalability and/or usability requirements, or they are simply insecure. In this thesis, the security and usability aspects of contemporary methods for authentication based on one-time passwords (OTP) are examined and analyzed. In addition, more scalable solutions that provide a good user experience while at the same time preserving strong security are proposed.

Tag recommendation is a specific recommendation task for recommending metadata (tag) for a web resource (item) during user annotation process. In this context, sparsity problem refers to situation where tags need to be produced for items with few annotations or for user who tags few items. Most of the state of the art approaches in tag recommendation are rarely evaluated or perform poorly under this situation. This paper presents a combined method for mitigating sparsity problem in tag recommendation by mainly expanding and ranking candidate tags based on similar items’ tags and existing tag ontology. We evaluated the approach on two public social bookmarking datasets. The experiment results show better accuracy for recommendation in sparsity situation over several state of the art methods.
