Transformers with parallel windings are commonly used to reduce the losses in the windings. Windings losses depend on the winding positioning and the frequency effects because each winding affects the current sharing of itself and the neighboring windings. In this paper a methodology for determining the connections of the parallel windings that reduces the power losses (and temperature) in the windings of multi-winding transformers is presented. Other applications of the method, such as balanced current sharing and voltage drop reduction are also explored. Power losses due to wind turbine wakes are of the order of 10 and 20% of total power output in large wind farms. The focus of this research carried out within the EC funded UPWIND project is wind speed and turbulence modelling for large wind farms/wind turbines in complex terrain and offshore in order to optimise wind farm layouts to reduce wake losses and loads.

Non-uniform irradiance patterns created by Concentrated Photovoltaics (CPV) concentrators over Multi-Junction Cells (MJC) can originate significant power losses, especially when there are different spectral irradiance distributions over the different MJC junctions. This fact has an increased importance considering the recent advances in 4 and 5 junction cells. The spectral irradiance distributions are especially affected with thermal effects on Silicone-on-Glass (SoG) CPV systems. This work presents a new CPV optical design, the 9-fold Fresnel Köhler concentrator, prepared to overcome these effects at high concentrations while maintaining a large acceptance angle, paving the way for a future generation of high efficiency CPV systems of 4 and 5 junction cells.

Several boost-derived topologies are analyzed and compared for an aerospace application that uses a 100 V voltage bus. All these topologies have been designed and optimized considering the electrical requirements and the reduced number of space-qualified components. The comparison evaluates the power losses, mass, and dynamic response. Special attention has been paid to those topologies that may cancel the inherent right half plane zero (RHP) zero of the boost topology. Experimental results of the less common topologies are presented.

ABSTRACT This work is a contribution to photovoltaic (PV) systems with distributed maximum power point tracking (DMPPT), a system topology characterized by performing the MPPT at module level, instead of the more traditional topologies which perform MPPT for a larger number of modules. The two DMPPT technologies available at the moment are known as microinverters and power optimizers, also known as module level power electronics (MLPE), and they provide certain advantages over central MPPT systems like: higher energy production in mismatch situations, monitoring of each individual module, system design flexibility, higher system safety, etc. Although DMPPT is not limited to urban environments, it has been emphasized in the title as it is their natural market, since in large ground-mounted PV plants the extra cost is difficult to justify. Since 2010 MLPE have increased their market share steadily and continuing to grow steadily. However, there still lacks a profound understanding of how they work, especially in the case of power optimizers, the achievable energy gains with their use and the possibilities in failure diagnosis. The main objective of this thesis is to provide a complete understanding of DMPPT technologies: how they function, their limitations and their advantages. A series of equations used to model PV arrays with power optimizers have been derived and used to point out limitations in solving certain mismatch situation. Because one of the most emphasized benefits of DMPPT is their ability to mitigate shading losses, an extensive study on the effects of shadows on PV systems is presented; both on the I-V curve and on MPPT algorithms. Experimental tests have been performed on the MPPT algorithms of central inverters and MLPE, highlighting their inefficiency in I-V curves with local maxima. An analysis of the possible mitigation of hot-spots with DMPPT is discussed and experimentally verified. And a theoretical analysis of the possible power and energy gains is presented as well as experiments in real PV systems. A short economic analysis of the benefits of DMPPT has also been performed. In order to aide in the previous task, a program which simulates I-V curves under shaded conditions has been developed and experimentally verified. This same program has been used to develop a software tool especially designed for PV systems affected by shading, which estimates the losses due to shading and the energy gains obtained with DMPPT. Finally, a set of algorithms for diagnosing system faults in PV systems with DMPPT has been developed and experimentally verified. The tool can diagnose the following failures: fixed object shading (with distance estimation), localized dirt, generalized dirt, possible hot-spots, module degradation and excessive losses in DC cables. In addition, it alerts the user of the power losses produced by each failure and classifies the failures by their severity and it does not require the use of irradiance or temperature sensors.

Non-uniform irradiance patterns over Multi-Junction Cells gives rise to power losses, especially when considering spectral irradiance distributions over different junctions. Thermal effects on Silicone-on-Glass lenses affect spectral irradiance distributions. A new Photovoltaic Concentrator (CPV), formed by nine optical channels, each one with a Köhler configuration, has been designed to overcome these effects at high concentrations for a large acceptance angle. A Fresnel Lens with a Variable Focal Point is proposed to prevent optical crosstalk in multichannel systems. When integrated into the concentrator, improves the acceptance angle. These designs are designed to fulfill the expected requirements of four junction CPV systems.

The hot-spot phenomenon is a relatively frequent problem occurring in current photovoltaic generators. It entails both a risk for the photovoltaic module’s lifetime and a decrease in its operational efficiency. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of widely accepted procedures for dealing with them in practice. This paper presents the IES–UPM observations on 200 affected photovoltaic modules. Visual and infrared inspection, as well as electroluminescence, peak power rating and operating voltage tests have been carried out. Thermography under steady state conditions and photovoltaic module operating voltage, both at normal photovoltaic system operating conditions, are the selected methods to deal in practice with hot-spots. The temperature difference between the hot-spot and its surroundings, and the operating voltage differences between affected and non-affected photovoltaic modules are the base for establishing defective criteria, at the lights of both lifetime and operating efficiency considerations. Hot-spots temperature gradients larger than 20 °C, in any case, and larger than 10 °C when, at the same time, voltage operating losses are larger than the allowable power losses fixed at the photovoltaic module warranties, are proposed as rejecting conditions for routine inspections under contractual frameworks. The upper threshold of 20 °C is deduced for temperate climates from the basic criterion of keeping absolute hot-spot temperatures below 20 °C.

This paper presents the impact of non-homogeneous deposits of dust on the performance of a PV array. The observations have been made in a 2-MW PV park in the southeast region of Spain. The results are that inhomogeneous dust leads to more significant consequences than the mere short-circuit current reduction resulting from transmittance losses. In particular, when the affected PV modules are part of a string together with other cleaned (or less dusty) ones, operation voltage losses arise. These voltage losses can be several times larger than the short-circuit ones, leading to power losses that can be much larger than what measurements suggest when the PV modules are considered separately. Significant hot-spot phenomena can also arise leading to cells exhibiting temperature differences of more than 20 degrees and thus representing a threat to the PV modules' lifetime.

ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes the powertrain of a battery electric vehicle, focusing on energy efficiency and passenger exposure to electromagnetic fields (electromagnetic radiation). This study comprises the energy storage system as well as the electric machine, along with their associated power electronics and control systems. The analysis and conclusions presented in this dissertation are based on mathematical models, computer simulations and laboratory scale tests. The research performed during this thesis was intended to be of industrial nature, despite being developed in a university. In this sense, the work described in this document was carried out thinking of both the designer and the manufacturer of the vehicle. However, some of the results obtained lack industrial readiness, and therefore they remain utterly academic. Regarding energy efficiency, hybrid energy storage systems consisting in lithium batteries, supercapacitors and up to two DC-DC power converters are considered. These kind of systems are analyzed by means of mathematical models and simulations from the energy efficiency point of view, quantifying its impact on other relevant aspects such as battery aging. Concerning the electric machine, permanent magnet synchronous machines are studied in this work. The energy efficiency analysis comprises the machine design and the control strategy, while the inverter and its modulation technique are taken into account but only as sources of further power losses, and not as potential sources for further efficiency optimization. In this sense, both the inverter topology (3-phase IGBT-based inverter) and the switching technique (hysteresis current control) are fixed from the beginning. The second aspect studied in this work is passenger exposure to magnetic fields. This topic is approached from the prediction point of view, rather than from the diagnosis point of view. In other words, a methodology to estimate the magnetic field generated by the power devices of an electric vehicle is proposed and analyzed in this dissertation. This methodology has been validated by laboratory tests. The most important aspects of this contribution, apart from the methodology itself, are the consequences (for instance, design guidelines) and the understanding of the magnetic radiation issue provided by it. The main contributions of this dissertation are listed next: a compilation of loss models for most of the power devices found in a battery electric vehicle powertrain, a simulation-based methodology to analyze hybrid energy storage performance in traction applications, an explanation of how to assign energy-based weights to different operating points in traction drives (useful when assessing electrical machine performance, for instance), a proposal to include one DC-DC converter in electric powertrains to minimize overall power losses in the system (despite the new losses added by the DC-DC), a brief comparison between two kinds of loss-minimization algorithms for permanent magnet synchronous machines in terms of adaptability and energy efficiency, a predictive methodology to estimate passenger magnetic field exposure due to power devices in an electric vehicle, and finally some useful conclusions and design guidelines concerning magnetic field exposure.

Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) are gaining in popularity in industrial drives due to their permanent magnet-free, competitive performance, and robust features. This paper studies the power losses in a 90-kW converter-fed SynRM drive by a calorimetric method in comparison of the traditional input-output method. After the converter and the motor were measured simultaneously in separate chambers, the converter was installed inside the large-size chamber next to the motor and the total drive system losses were obtained using one chamber. The uncertainty of both measurement methods is analyzed and discussed.
