End-brominated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMABr) was prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and employed in a series of atom transfer radical coupling (ATRC) and radical trap-assisted ATRC (RTA-ATRG) reactions. When coupling reactions were performed in the absence of a nitroso radical trap-traditional ATRC condition-very little coupling of the PMMA chains was observed, consistent with disproportionation as the major termination pathway for two PMMA chain-end radicals in our reactions. When 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane (MNP) was used as the radical trap, coupling of the PMMA chains in this attempted RTA-ATRC reaction was again unsuccessful, owing to capping of the PMMA chains with a bulky nitroxide and preventing further coupling. Analogous reactions performed using nitrosobenzene (NBz) as the radical trap showed significant dimerization, as observed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) by a shift in the apparent molecular weight compared to the PMMABr precursors. The extent of coupling was found to depend on the concentrion of NBz compared to the PMMABr chain ends, as well as the temperature and time of the coupling reaction. To a lesser extent, the concentrations of copper(I) bromide (CuBr), nitrogen ligand (N,N,N',N',N"-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine = PMDETA), and elemental copper (Cu) were also found to play a role in the success of the RTA-ATRC reaction. The highest levels of dimerization were observed when the coupling reaction was carried out at 80 degrees C for 0.5h, with ratio of 1:4:2.5:8:1 equiv of NBz: CuBr:Cu:PMDETA:PMMABr.

1-Benzyl-3-(2-hydroxy-2-phenylethyl)imidazolium chloride (5), which is a precursor of an N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, in combination with palladium acetate, has been employed as an effective catalyst for the fluorine-free Hiyama reaction. A systematic study of the catalytic mixture, by a 32 factorial design, has revealed that both the amount of palladium and the Pd/NHC precursor ratio are important factors for obtaining good yields of the coupling products, indicating an interaction between them. The best catalytic system involves mixing 0.1 mol-% palladium acetate in a 1:5 ratio (Pd/salt 5), which allows the effective coupling of a range of aryl bromides and chlorides with trimethoxy(phenyl)silane. The Hiyama reactions are carried out in NaOH solution (50 % H2O w/w), at 120 °C under microwave irradiation during 60 min.

The palladium-catalyzed synthesis of dihydroisobenzofurans has been performed by sequential Sonogashira cross-coupling/cyclization reactions between terminal alkynes and 2-(hydroxymethyl)bromo- and chlorobenzenes in methanol as solvent at 130 °C under microwave irradiation. A 4,4′-dichlorobenzophenone oxime-derived chloro-bridged palladacycle is an efficient pre-catalyst to perform this tandem process using 2-dicyclohexylphosphanyl-2′,4′,6′-triisopropylbiphenyl (Xphos) as ancillary ligand and potassium hydroxide as base in the absence of a copper cocatalyst. Under these conditions, functionalized 2-bromo- and 2-chlorobenzaldehydes are also suitable partners in the domino process affording phthalans in good yields. All the reactions can be performed under air and employing reagent-grade chemicals under low loading conditions (1 mol% Pd).

A novel magnetic nanoparticle-supported oxime palladacycle catalyst was successfully prepared and characterized. The magnetically recoverable catalyst was evaluated in the room temperature Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of aryl iodides and bromides in aqueous media. The catalyst was shown to be highly active under phosphine-free and low Pd loading (0.3 mol%) conditions. The catalyst could be easily separated from the reaction mixture using an external magnet and reused for six consecutive runs without significant loss of activity.

The comprehensive study on the coupling of magnetism, electrical polarization and the crystalline lattice with the off-stoichiometric effects in self-doped multiferroic hexagonal h-LuMnxO3±δ (0.92≤x≤1.12) ceramic oxides was carried out for the PhD work. There is a complex coupling of the three ferroic degrees. The cancelation of the magnetic moments of ions in the antiferromagnetic order, electric polarization with specific vortex/antivortex topology and lattice properties have pushed researchers to find out ways to disclose the underlying physics and chemistry of magneto-electric and magneto-elastic couplings of h-RMnO3 multiferroic materials. In this research work, self-doping of Lu-sites or Mn-sites of h-LuMnxO3±δ ceramics prepared via solid state route was done to pave a way for deeper understanding of the antiferromagnetic transition, the weak ferromagnetism often reported in the same crystalline lattices and the ferroelectric properties coupled to the imposed lattice changes. Accordingly to the aim of the PhD thesis, the objectives set for the sintering study in the first chapter on experimental results were two. First, study of sintering off-stoichiometric samples within conditions reported in the bibliography and also extracted from the phase diagrams of the LuMnxO3±δ, with a multiple firings ending with a last high temperature step at 1300ºC for 24 hours. Second, explore longer annealing times of up to 240 hours at the fixed temperature of 1300 ºC in a search for improving the properties of the solid solution under study. All series of LuMnxO3±δ ceramics for each annealing time were characterized to tentatively build a framework enabling comparison of measured properties with results of others available in literature. XRD and Rietveld refinement of data give the evolution the lattice parameters as a function to x. Shrinkage of the lattice parameters with increasing x values was observed, the stability limit of the solid solution being determined by analysis of lattice parameters. The evolution of grain size and presence of secondary phases have been investigated by means of TEM, SEM, EDS and EBSD techniques. The dependencies of grain growth and regression of secondary phases on composition x and time were further characterized. Magnetic susceptibility of samples and magnetic irreversibility were extensively examined in the present work. The dependency of magnetic susceptibility, Neel ordering transition and important magnetic parameters are determined and compared to observation in other multiferroics in the following chapter of the thesis. As a tool of high sensitivity to detect minor traces of the secondary phase hausmannite, magnetic measurements are suggested for cross-checking of phase diagrams. Difficulty of previous studies on interpreting the magnetic anomaly below 43 K in h-RMnO3 oxides was discussed and assigned to the Mn3O4 phase, with supported of the electron microscopy. Magneto-electric coupling where AFM ordering is coupled to dielectric polarization is investigated as a function of x and of sintering condition via frequency and temperature dependent complex dielectric constant measurements in the final chapter of the thesis. Within the limits of solid solubility, the crystalline lattice of off-stoichiometric ceramics was shown to preserve the magneto-electric coupling at TN. It represents the first research work on magneto-electric coupling modified by vacancy doping to author’s knowledge. Studied lattices would reveal distortions at the atomic scale imposed by local changes of x dependent on sintering conditions which were widely inspected by using TEM/STEM methods, complemented with EDS and EELS spectroscopy all together to provide comprehensive information on cross coupling of distortions, inhomogeneity and electronic structure assembled and discussed in a specific chapter. Internal interfaces inside crystalline grains were examined. Qualitative explanations of the measured magnetic and ferroelectric properties were established in relation to observed nanoscale features of h-LuMnxO3±δ ceramics. Ferroelectric domains and topological defects are displayed both in TEM and AFM/PFM images, the later technique being used to look at size, distribution and switching of ferroelectric domains influenced by vacancy doping at the micron scale bridging to complementary TEM studies on the atomic structure of ferroelectric domains. In support to experimental study, DFT simulations using Wien2K code have been carried out in order to interpret the results of EELS spectra of O K-edge and to obtain information on the cation hybridization to oxygen ions. The L3,2 edges of Mn is used to access the oxidation state of the Mn ions inside crystalline grains. In addition, rehybridization driven ferroelectricity is also evaluated by comparing the partial density of states of the orbitals of all ions of the samples, also the polarization was calculated and correlated to the off-stoichiometric effect.

Section 1 is focused on the bis-alkoxycarbonylation reaction of olefins, catalyzed by aryl α-diimine/Pd(II) complexes, for the synthesis of succinic acid ester derivatives, important compounds in many industrial fields. The opening chapter (Chapter 1) of this thesis presents an overview of the basic chemistry of organopalladium compounds and carbonylation reactions, focusing on oxidative bis-alkoxycarbonylation processes. In Chapter 2 the results obtained in the bis-alkoxycarbonylation of 1,2-disubstituted olefins are reported. The reaction proceeds under very mild reaction conditions, using an aryl α-diimine/Pd(II) catalyst and p-benzoquinone as oxidant, in the presence of a suitable alcohol. This process proved to be very efficient, selective and diastereospecific and various 2,3-disubstituted succinic esters have been obtained in high yields. In Chapter 3 the first bis-alkoxycarbonylation reaction of acrylic esters and acrylic amides, leading to the synthesis of 2-alkoxycarbonyl and 2-carbamoyl succinates respectively, is reported. Remarkably, the utilized aryl α-diimine/Pd(II) catalyst is able to promote the carbonylation of both the β- and the generally non-reactive α- positions of these alkenes. The proposed catalytic cycle is supported by DFT calculations. Section 2 is mainly focused on the Ni-catalyzed difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes tethered to unstabilized ketones. This reaction allows for a wide range of pharmaceutically useful cyclic architectures to be obtained. Chapter 4 consists of an introduction to the difunctionalization reactions of unactivated olefins. In particular, intramolecular reactions will be discussed in detail. In Chapter 5 the results obtained from the Ni-catalyzed difunctionalization of unactivated alkenes tethered to unstabilized ketones are reported. The reaction proceeds through the formation of a zinc-enolate compound, followed by a cyclization/cross-coupling reaction, which takes place in the presence of a phosphine/Ni(II) complex and an (hetero)aryl electrophile, leading to different cyclic and bicyilc architectures. In Chapter 6, preliminary results concerning the anionic cyclization of zinc enolates tethered to unactivated alkenes are presented.

The main purpose of my PhD was the combination of the principles of transition metal catalysis with photoredox catalysis. We focused our attention on the development of novel dual catalytic protocols for the functionalization of carbonyl compounds through the generation of transient nucleophilic organometallic species. Specifically, we focused on the development of new methodologies combining photoredox catalysis with titanium and nickel in low oxidation state. Firstly, a Barbier-type allylation of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes –catalytic in titanium– in the presence of a blue photon-absorbing dye was developed. Parallelly, we were pleased to observe that the developed methodology could also be extended to the propargylation of aldehydes under analogous conditions. After an extensive re–optimization of all the reaction parameters, we developed an enantioselective and diastereoselective pinacol coupling of aromatic aldehydes promoted by non-toxic, cheap and easy to synthetize titanium complexes. The key feature, that allows the complete (dia)stereocontrol played by titanium, is the employment of a red-absorbing organic dye. The tailored (photo)redox properties of the red-absorbing organic dye [nPr–DMQA+][BF4–] promote the selective reduction of Ti(IV) to Ti(III). Moreover, even if the major contribution in dual photoredox and nickel catalysis is devoted to the realization of cross-coupling-type reactions, we wanted to evaluate different possible scenarios. Our focus was on the possibility of exploiting intermediates arising from the oxidative addition of nickel complexes as transient nucleophilic species. The first topic considered regarded the possibility to perform allylation of aldehydes by dual photoredox and nickel catalysis. In the first instance, a non–stereocontrolled version of the reaction was presented. Finally, after a long series of drastic modification of the reaction conditions, a highly enantioselective variant of the protocol was also reported. All the reported methodologies are supported by careful photophysical analysis and, in some cases, computational modelling.

The effect of ultraviolet radiation on the properties of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) was studied. The PHB investigated is produced from microbial fermentation using saccharose from sugarcane as the carbon source to the bacteria. The material was exposed to artificial UV-A radiation for 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks. The photodegradation effect was followed by changes of molecular weight, of chemical and crystalline structures, of thermal, morphological, optical and mechanical properties, as well as of biodegradability. The experimental results showed that PHB undergoes both chain scission and cross-linking reactions, but the continuous decrease in its mechanical properties and the low amount of gel content upon UV exposure indicated that the scission reactions were predominant. Molar mass, melting temperature and crystallinity measurements for two layers of PHB samples with different depth suggested that the material has a strong degradation profile, which was attributed to its dark colour that restricted the transmission of light. Previous photodegradation initially delayed PHB biodegradability, due to the superficial increase in crystallinity seen with UV exposure. The possible reactions taking place during PHB photodegradation were presented and discussed in terms of the infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. A reference peak (internal standard) in the infrared spectra was proposed for PHB photodegradation. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A wide range of polyfunctional aryl and heteroaryl zinc reagents were efficiently prepared in THF by using (TMP)(2)Mg center dot 2LiCl (TMP = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperamidyl) in the presence of ZnCl(2). The possible pathways of this metalation procedure as well as possible reactive intermediates are discussed. This experimental protocol expands the tolerance of functional groups and allows an efficient zincation of sensitive heterocycles such as quinoxaline or pyrazine. The zincated arenes and heteroarenes react with various electrophiles providing the expected products in 60-95 % yield.
