There is a nationwide need for a safe, efficient and cost effective transportation system. An essential component of this system is the bridges. Local agencies perhaps have an even greater task than federal and state agencies in maintaining the low volume road (LVR) bridge system due to lack of sufficient resources and funding. The primary focus of this study was to review the various aspects of off-system bridge design, rehabilitation, and replacement. Specifically, a reference report was developed to address common problems in LVR bridges. The source of information included both Iowa and national agencies. This report is intended to be a “user manual” or “tool box” of information, procedures and choices for county engineers to employ in the management of their bridge inventory plus identify areas and problems that need to be researched

Dídac Martínez, Director de l'Àrea de Serveis Universitaris de la UPC, va esmentar en la seva introducció una sèrie de 10 prioritats per aldesenvolupament dels dipòsits institucionals, de les quals la desena era la integració dels repositoris en la infraestructura institucional de gestió de la informació científica. A més de citar diverses iniciatives de integració en aquest sentit -tant per investigació com per a continguts docents- a la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, la presentació va esmentar NARCIS com a model, un sistema CRIS d'àmbit nacional desenvolupat a Holanda per una sèrie d'universitats (que comparteixen Metis com a sistema CRIS institucional), NWO i el KNAW.

This paper presents a theoretical model to analyze the privacy issues around location based mobile business models. We report the results of an exploratory field experiment in Switzerland that assessed the factors driving user payoff in mobile business. We found that (1) the personal data disclosed has a negative effect on user payoff; (2) the amount of personalization available has a direct and positive effect, as well as a moderating effect on user payoff; (3) the amount of control over user's personal data has a direct and positive effect, as well as a moderating effect on user payoff. The results suggest that privacy protection could be the main value proposition in the B2C mobile market. From our theoretical model we derive a set of guidelines to design a privacy-friendly business model pattern for third-party services. We discuss four examples to show the mobile platform can play a key role in the implementation of these new business models.

Demand forecasting is one of the fundamental managerial tasks. Most companies do not know their future demands, so they have to make plans based on demand forecasts. The literature offers many methods and approaches for producing forecasts. When selecting the forecasting approach, companies need to estimate the benefits provided by particular methods, as well as the resources that applying the methods call for. Former literature points out that even though many forecasting methods are available, selecting a suitable approach and implementing and managing it is a complex cross-functional matter. However, research that focuses on the managerial side of forecasting is relatively rare. This thesis explores the managerial problems that are involved when demand forecasting methods are applied in a context where a company produces products for other manufacturing companies. Industrial companies have some characteristics that differ from consumer companies, e.g. typically a lower number of customers and closer relationships with customers than in consumer companies. The research questions of this thesis are: 1. What kind of challenges are there in organizing an adequate forecasting process in the industrial context? 2. What kind of tools of analysis can be utilized to support the improvement of the forecasting process? The main methodological approach in this study is design science, where the main objective is to develop tentative solutions to real-life problems. The research data has been collected from two organizations. Managerial problems in organizing demand forecasting can be found in four interlinked areas: 1. defining the operational environment for forecasting, 2. defining the forecasting methods, 3. defining the organizational responsibilities, and 4. defining the forecasting performance measurement process. In all these areas, examples of managerial problems are described, and approaches for mitigating these problems are outlined.

In recent decades, business intelligence (BI) has gained momentum in real-world practice. At the same time, business intelligence has evolved as an important research subject of Information Systems (IS) within the decision support domain. Today’s growing competitive pressure in business has led to increased needs for real-time analytics, i.e., so called real-time BI or operational BI. This is especially true with respect to the electricity production, transmission, distribution, and retail business since the law of physics determines that electricity as a commodity is nearly impossible to be stored economically, and therefore demand-supply needs to be constantly in balance. The current power sector is subject to complex changes, innovation opportunities, and technical and regulatory constraints. These range from low carbon transition, renewable energy sources (RES) development, market design to new technologies (e.g., smart metering, smart grids, electric vehicles, etc.), and new independent power producers (e.g., commercial buildings or households with rooftop solar panel installments, a.k.a. Distributed Generation). Among them, the ongoing deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) has profound impacts on the electricity retail market. From the view point of BI research, the AMI is enabling real-time or near real-time analytics in the electricity retail business. Following Design Science Research (DSR) paradigm in the IS field, this research presents four aspects of BI for efficient pricing in a competitive electricity retail market: (i) visual data-mining based descriptive analytics, namely electricity consumption profiling, for pricing decision-making support; (ii) real-time BI enterprise architecture for enhancing management’s capacity on real-time decision-making; (iii) prescriptive analytics through agent-based modeling for price-responsive demand simulation; (iv) visual data-mining application for electricity distribution benchmarking. Even though this study is from the perspective of the European electricity industry, particularly focused on Finland and Estonia, the BI approaches investigated can: (i) provide managerial implications to support the utility’s pricing decision-making; (ii) add empirical knowledge to the landscape of BI research; (iii) be transferred to a wide body of practice in the power sector and BI research community.

However, it’s relatively rare that researches are focused on the differences in forecasting between consumer and industrial companies. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the potential of improving demand forecasting practices for B2B and B2C sectors in the global supply chains. Business to business (B2B) sector produces products for other manufacturing companies. On the other hand, consumer (B2C) sector provides goods for individual buyers. Usually industrial sector have a lower number of customers and closer relationships with them. The research questions of this thesis are: 1) What are the main differences and similarities in demand planning between B2B and B2C sectors? 2) How the forecast performance for industrial and consumer companies can be improved? The main methodological approach in this study is design science, where the main objective is to develop tentative solutions to real-life problems. The research data has been collected from a case company. Evaluation and improving in organizing demand forecasting can be found in three interlinked areas: 1) demand planning operational environment, 2) demand forecasting techniques, 3) demand information sharing scenarios. In this research current B2B and B2C demand practices are presented with further comparison between those two sectors. It was found that B2B and B2C sectors have significant differences in demand practices. This research partly filled the theoretical gap in understanding the difference in forecasting in consumer and industrial sectors. In all these areas, examples of managerial problems are described, and approaches for mitigating these problems are outlined.

Yli puolet kuntien vuosibudjeteista kuluu sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluihin. Jatkossa väestö ikääntyy ja huoltosuhteen muutos tulee niukentamaan kuntien resursseja ja lisäämään palvelujen tarvetta. Näin ollen vaikuttavien ja kustannustehokkaiden ratkaisumallien luominen on ensiarvoisen tärkeää. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on rakentaa malli, jota voidaan hyödyntää tuottavuuden, vaikuttavuuden ja kustannusvaikuttavuuden jatkuvassa seurannassa alueellisissa sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluissa ja testata mallia esimerkkitapauksilla. Pääpaino on vaikuttavuudessa ja kustannusvaikuttavuudessa. Aiemman tutkimuksen perusteella tuottavuuden, vaikuttavuuden ja kustannusvaikuttavuuden mittaamiseen on useita lähestymistapoja. Tässä tutkimuksessa tuottavuutta arvioidaan panosten ja tuotosten suhteella, vaikuttavuutta palvelujen käytöllä ja kustannusvaikuttavuutta palvelujen käytön kustannuksilla. Kirjallisuudesta nousee esille selkeä tarve yli perinteisten organisaatiorajojen menevälle jatkuvalle vaikuttavuuden seurannalle. Aikaisempi tutkimus kattaa kertaluontoisia selvityksiä, joissa usein mittarit ovat operatiivisella tasolla, toimialasidonnaisia tai vaikeasti mitattavissa. Tutkimus on suunnittelutiedettä. Tutkimuksen lopputuloksena syntyy sosiaali- ja terveyspalvelujen käyttömalli (sote-palvelujen käyttömalli), jota varten toteutetaan tietokanta ja raportointikerros. Sote-palvelujen käyttömallia testataan tässä tutkimuksessa kolmella eri organisaatioyksiköllä ja asiakasryhmällä, jotka ovat strategisesti merkittäviä tutkittavalle organisaatiolle ja asiakasryhmiin on kohdennettu selkeä kehittämistoimenpide (kuntoutukseen panostaminen ja vammaisten sekä vanhusten laitoshoidon purku). Sote-palvelujen käyttömalli tuottaa tietoa kehittämistoimenpiteiden tuottavuudesta, vaikuttavuudesta ja kustannusvaikuttavuudesta. Sote-palvelujen käyttömallin todetaan soveltuvan tutkittavaan organisaatioon ja sote-palvelujen käyttömalli on sielläjatkuvassa käytössä. Sote-palvelujen käyttömalli on siirrettävissä myös muihin soteorganisaatioihin ja laajennettavissa myös muihin sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluihin ja niitä lähellä oleviin palveluihin.

Outiller de façon satisfaisante la gestion des connaissances de consultants dans un secteur d’activité en constante évolution est une tâche ardue, pour laquelle il n’existe aucune solution applicable à tous types de milieux. Toutefois, notre expérience de plus de 25 ans en consultation nous amène à croire que, si l’on se restreint à des PME d’au plus 200 consultants dotées d’une culture d’entreprise favorable, il est faisable d’en arriver à une solution informatique réduisant significativement la problématique de gestion des connaissances. Cette étude vise à présenter la conception d’une telle solution. Ses principales caractristiques sont : utilisation d’une taxonomie pour classifier et décrire uniformément les expertises et leurs usages; prise en compte systématique des caractristiques des consultants; imbrication avec la gestion des demandes, des affectations, du recrutement et de la rétention; gestion décentralisée et participative; notifications de possibilités d’enrichissements et d’usages des expertises. Cette conception est basée sur des critères de qualité établis à partir d’une description du type d’organisation visé et d’hypothèses sur leur fonctionnement et leurs besoins. Ces hypothèses s’appuient sur une revue de littérature et sur plus de 25 années d’expérience dans le milieu. Il s’agit donc d’une recherche de type « design science », Hevner (2007) et March et Storey (2008), où les hypothèses de nature heuristique (basées sur l’expérience) complètent les connaissances empiriquement établies recensées dans la revue de littérature. La suite naturelle de notre travail serait d’implanter différentes parties de la solution, pour vérifier jusqu’à quel point celle-ci permet bien de réduire la problématique.

Analog-to digital Converters (ADC) have an important impact on the overall performance of signal processing system. This research is to explore efficient techniques for the design of sigma-delta ADC,specially for multi-standard wireless tranceivers. In particular, the aim is to develop novel models and algorithms to address this problem and to implement software tools which are avle to assist the designer's decisions in the system-level exploration phase. To this end, this thesis presents a framework of techniques to design sigma-delta analog to digital converters.A2-2-2 reconfigurable sigma-delta modulator is proposed which can meet the design specifications of the three wireless communication standards namely GSM,WCDMA and WLAN. A sigma-delta modulator design tool is developed using the Graphical User Interface Development Environment (GUIDE) In MATLAB.Genetic Algorithm(GA) based search method is introduced to find the optimum value of the scaling coefficients and to maximize the dynamic range in a sigma-delta modulator.

“Los modelos de negocio describen las bases sobre las cuales una empresa, crea, proporciona y capta valor”. Osterwalder, Alexander. (2010). Kids Club es una empresa manufacturera de calzado para niños catalogada por PROEXPORT como una de las mejores empresas Colombianas dentro del sector; y una de las pocas empresas que en menos de 10 años logro exportar sus productos a mercados internacionales a partir de técnicas administrativas empíricas. A través del siguiente estudio de caso, se pretende describir el modelo de negocio de la empresa; identificando sus segmentos de mercado, estructura de cadena de valor y mecanismos de generación de ventas con el objetivo de identificar sus factores críticos de éxito y proponer nuevas alternativas para que se mantenga como líder del sector, en el entorno empresarial actual.

Las tecnologías de la información han empezado a ser un factor importante a tener en cuenta en cada uno de los procesos que se llevan a cabo en la cadena de suministro. Su implementación y correcto uso otorgan a las empresas ventajas que favorecen el desempeño operacional a lo largo de la cadena. El desarrollo y aplicación de software han contribuido a la integración de los diferentes miembros de la cadena, de tal forma que desde los proveedores hasta el cliente final, perciben beneficios en las variables de desempeño operacional y nivel de satisfacción respectivamente. Por otra parte es importante considerar que su implementación no siempre presenta resultados positivos, por el contrario dicho proceso de implementación puede verse afectado seriamente por barreras que impiden maximizar los beneficios que otorgan las TIC.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the coverage made by CNN and Al Jazeera (in Arabic) to operation Caste Lead and the Goldstone Report during 2008 and 2009. This investigation is based in the theory of Qualitative Analysis of Content, by Wildemuth and Zhang. The methodology follows up with the one proposed by the authors in the main theory, complementing it with the Gamson and Modigliani´s Framing theory. The methodology mention above display the different in the coverage development, determined by the geopolitical influences; being CNN more influenced by a Western pro USA and pro Israeli speech, while Al Jazeera is more prone to support the Palestinian cause, this is the thesis of this article. During the development of the investigation, the thesis was demonstrated to be only partially accurate as CNN was not completely supportive to the Israeli arguments during the coverage, but Al Jazeera did have preferential speech for the Palestinian cause.
