The hydrological and biogeochemical processes that operate in catchments influence the ecological quality of freshwater systems through delivery of fine sediment, nutrients and organic matter. Most models that seek to characterise the delivery of diffuse pollutants from land to water are reductionist. The multitude of processes that are parameterised in such models to ensure generic applicability make them complex and difficult to test on available data. Here, we outline an alternative - data-driven - inverse approach. We apply SCIMAP, a parsimonious risk based model that has an explicit treatment of hydrological connectivity. we take a Bayesian approach to the inverse problem of determining the risk that must be assigned to different land uses in a catchment in order to explain the spatial patterns of measured in-stream nutrient concentrations. We apply the model to identify the key sources of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) diffuse pollution risk in eleven UK catchments covering a range of landscapes. The model results show that: 1) some land use generates a consistently high or low risk of diffuse nutrient pollution; but 2) the risks associated with different land uses vary both between catchments and between nutrients; and 3) that the dominant sources of P and N risk in the catchment are often a function of the spatial configuration of land uses. Taken on a case-by-case basis, this type of inverse approach may be used to help prioritise the focus of interventions to reduce diffuse pollution risk for freshwater ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the residues of the insecticide carbosulfan and its carbofuran metabolites and 3-hydroxy-carbofuran in orange compartments (whole fruit, bagasse and juice) and comparison between the residual levels found in fruits with the maximum residue level and the safety interval established by the Brazilian legislation. Two field experiments were carried out, both with the following treatments: a-check; b-one application of 10 g of carbosulfan . 100 L-1 of water; c-one application with twice the rate applied in treatment b; d-four applications with the same rate applied in treatment b. Samples were taken at (-1), zero, 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after the last or unique application. The quantitative determinations were done by gas chromatography technique, using a nitrogen-phosphorus detector. The carbosulfan metabolism to its carbofuran metabolite was rapid (3 days), being both analytes concentrated in the bagasse (peel + flavedo + albedo). However, the metabolism of carbofuran to 3-hydroxy-carbofuran was of low intensity or this metabolite was quickly dissipated. Carbosulfan residues and its metabolites did not penetrate into the fruit, thus not contaminating the juice. The use of the pesticide was adequate, with respect to fruit consumption, in relation to the Brazilian legislation.

Pig slurry is a valuable nutrient resource but constitutes a waste disposal problem in areas of high animal density. In the semiarid area of Pla d’Urgell, in the Ebro Valley, North-East Spain, irrigated crops receive large amounts of nutrients in the form of manure and mineral fertilizers. We studied the effect of pig slurry and additional side-dress mineral fertilizers on irrigated wheat, Triticum aestivum L., on a coarse loam soil, with high soil P and K levels. Yields increased by 62.3% when using pig slurry. The application of ammonium sulfate nitrate sidedress did not significantly increase wheat production. The average apparent recoveries were higher for potassium (88.7%) than for nitrogen (51.3%) and phosphorus (36.3%). Greater amounts of soil NO3-N were measured over the four growing seasons, which was consistent with the amount of N applied. Macronutrient and micronutrient uptake was significant higher for pig slurry treatments, but only small differences were found between the pig slurry and pig slurry plus ammonium sulfate nitrate treatments. The unfertilized treatment showed significantly lower soil P, K, Cu and Zn content than pig slurry treatments; 34%, 21%, 34%, and 26% respectively. These findings could be used to develop a nutrient management plan based on knowledge of soil test results and crop nutrient removal. This could help to improve the use of pig slurry and mineral fertilizers on limited available land areas and prevent the accumulation of potentially toxic elements in soils and the export of nutrients through agricultural drainage.

The high cost of feed ingredients, the use of non-renewable sources of phosphate and the dramatic increase in the environmental load resulting from the excessive land application of manure are major challenges for the livestock industry. Precision feeding is proposed as an essential approach to improve the utilization of dietary nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients and thus reduce feeding costs and nutrient excretion. Precision feeding requires accurate knowledge of the nutritional value of feedstuffs and animal nutrient requirements, the formulation of diets in accordance with environmental constraints, and the gradual adjustment of the dietary nutrient supply to match the requirements of the animals. After the nutritional potential of feed ingredients has been precisely determined and has been improved by the addition of enzymes (e.g. phytases) or feed treatments, the addition of environmental objectives to the traditional feed formulation algorithms can promote the sustainability of the swine industry by reducing nutrient excretion in swine operations with small increases in feeding costs. Increasing the number of feeding phases can also contribute to significant reductions in nutrient excretion and feeding costs. However, the use of precision feeding techniques in which pigs are fed individually with daily tailored diets can further improve the efficiency with which pigs utilize dietary nutrients. Precision feeding involves the use of feeding techniques that allow the provision of the right amount of feed with the right composition at the right time to each pig in the herd. Using this approach, it has been estimated that feeding costs can be reduced by more than 4.6%, and nitrogen and phosphorus excretion can both be reduced by more than 38%. Moreover, the integration of precision feeding techniques into large-group production systems can provide real-time off-farm monitoring of feed and animals for optimal slaughter and production strategies, thus improving the environmental sustainability of pork production, animal well-being and meat-product quality.

The aim of this work was to determine the sugar, organic acid and mineral compositions of the whole fruit and fractions (skin, pulp and seed) of the Paulista (Plinia cauliflora) and Sabará (Plinia jaboticaba) jabuticaba tree genotypes, as well as the oil compositions of their skin and seeds. High levels of sugar, especially fructose, followed by glucose and sucrose, were encountered in the fruit. In the Paulista genotype, higher levels of total and reducing sugars were found in the pulp and skin, which was not observed when comparing the whole fruit of both genotypes. Five organic acids were found in the whole fruit and in the fractions of the two jabuticaba genotypes in quantitative order: citric acid > succinic acid > malic acid > oxalic acid > acetic acid. Potassium was the most abundant mineral found. This fruit was also shown to be rich in magnesium, phosphorus, calcium and copper. The seed oil had nearly the same constitution as the oil extracted from the skin in both genotypes and the major compounds were an unidentified phytosterol, palmitic, linoleic and oleic acids, and squalene.

Työssä selvitettiin sulfaattisellutehtaan kemikaalikierron eräiden virtojen vierasainepitoisuudet. Tavoitteena oli myös laatia kaustisoinnin ja meesauunin vierasainetaseet sekä arvioida kalkkikierron aukaisun vaikutusta kierron vierasainetasoihin. Kirjallisuusosassa on tarkasteltu sulfaattisellutehtaan kemikaalikiertoa ja sen osaprosesseja. Kirjallisuusosassa on keskitytty tarkastelemaan eri vierasaineiden käyttäytymistä kemikaalikierrossa. Lisäksi kalkkikierron prosesseja sekä kalkkikierron taselaskentaa on tarkasteltu. Kokeellisessa osassa määritettiin Metsä-Botnia Oy:n Joutseno Pulpin sulfaattisellutehtaan kemikaalikierron vierasainetasot ja verrattiin niitä muiden tehtaiden vierasainetasoihin. Kokeellisessa osassa selvitettiin myös ne prosessin kohdat, joihin vierasaineet rikastuvat. Lisäksi laadittiin kaustisoinnin ja meesauunin vierasainetaseet sekä tehtiin arvio kalkkikierron vierasainetasojen ja kalkkikierron aukaisun välisestä korrelaatiosta. Tehtyjen määritysten perusteella Joutseno Pulpin sulfaattisellutehtaan eräiden prosessivirtojen vierasainetasot ovat selvästi muiden Metsä-Botnian tehtaiden tasoja korkeammalla. Etenkin valkolipeän kaliumpitoisuus ja meesan fosforipitoisuus ovat korkeita. Kloridi rikastuu voimakkaasti soodakattilan lentotuhkaan ja fosfori rikastuu meesauunin sähkösuodinpölyyn. Laadittujen taseiden perusteella vierasaineista fosfori ja magnesium rikastuvat selvästi kalkkikiertoon. Niiden määrät kalkkikierrossa ovat huomattavasti suuremmat kuin muiden vierasaineiden määrät. Kalkkikierron fosforitasoa voidaan alentaa poistamalla kierrosta meesauunin sähkösuodinpölyä ja korvaamalla poisto make-up kalkilla. Tällöin muiden vierasaineiden määrä kalkkikierrossa kuitenkin kasvaa.

Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli tutkia pitkäketjuisten rasvahappokloridien ja alkyyliketeenidimeerien (AKD) valmistusreaktioiden kinetiikkaa. Työn tavoitteena oli saada mittaustuloksia, joiden perusteella voitaisiin kehittää reaktioille kineettinen kineettinen malli ja suorittaa valmistusprosessien alustava optimointi. Teoreettisessa osassa on selvitetty rasvahappokloridien ja alkyyliketeenidimeerien (AKD) eri valmistustapoja. Lisäksi on perehdytty tarkemmin rasvahappokloridien dehydrohalogenointireaktioiden reaktiomekanismeihin ja valmistusprosessin problematiikkaan. Kokeellisessa osassa tutkittiin rasvahappokloridien valmistusta klooraamalla öljyhappoa 30 mol-% fosforitrikloridiylimäärällä lämpötiloissa 45, 50 ja 55OC. Alkyyliketeenidimeerien valmistusta tutkittiin dehydrohalogenoimalla palmitiini- ja öljyhappokloridia 0-30 mol-% trietyyliamiiniylimäärällä inertissä liuottimessa, lämpötiloissa 45 ja 50OC. Reaktiot toteutettiin puolipanosreaktiona, joissa reaktioastiassa olevaan reagenssin ja liuottimen seokseen lisättiin lähtöaine tasaisena massavirtana. Reaktioiden etenemistä seurattiin FT-IR- ja GC-analyysien avulla. Kalorimetrisilla kokeilla tutkittiin öljyhappokloridin dimeroitumisreaktion reaktiolämmön muodostumista ja UV-VIS-analyyseillä seurattiin öljyhappokloridin vanhenemista. Öljyhappokloridin valmistusreaktiolle saatiin hyvä kineettinen malli. Kineettisen mallin puutteena voidaan pitää sitä, ettei kokeissa saatu tietoa mahdollisten sivutuotteiden muodostumisesta. Sovitusohjelmalla saatiin sovitettua estimaatit reaktionopeusvakioille lämpötiloissa 45, 50 ja 55OC. Happokloridien dimeroitumisreaktioiden kineettisen mallin sopivuudelle saatiin suhteellisen hyvä kuva Kuten öljyhappokloridin tapauksessa, myöskään AKD:n valmistusreaktioissa syntynyt sivutuotteita, joten niiden osuutta oletettuun kineettiseen malliin ei tunneta. Sovitusohjelmalla saatiin sovitettua estimaatit reaktionopeusvakioille lämpötiloissa 45 ja 50OC.

Työssä tutkittiin, mikä on kustannustehokkain tapa lisätä ilmastuskapasiteettia ja selvitettiin, saostaako vesilaitokselta flotaatioaltaasta poistettava ferrisulfaattisakka jäteveden fosforia esiselkeyttimessä. Työssä määritettiin teoreettinen hapentarve ilmastusaltaassa maksimikuormituksen aikana ja hapensiirtonopeus jäteveteen olemassa olevalla laitteistolla. Hapensiirtonopeuden funktion korjauskertoimet  ja  sekä kokonaishapensiirtokerroin määritettiin laboratorio-olosuhteissa. Lisäksi laskettiin kuinka paljon nykyisten ilmastimien kautta saadaan happea jäteveteen liukenemaan ja verrattiin tätä lukua teoreettiseen hapentarpeeseen. Jälkimmäistä menettelytapaa käyttäen arvioitiin lisähapen tarve. Tulokseksi saatiin, että maksimi BOD-kuormituksen aikana happea tarvitsee saada jäteveteen liuotettua 5200 m³/d lisää. Ilmastuskapasiteetin lisäyksen kustannuslaskelmassa verrattiin neljää vaihtoehtoa: puhdasta happea liuotettuna happimattojen kautta tai OKI-ilmastimen kautta, onsite-happilaitoksen puhdasta happea liuotettuna OKI-ilmastimen kautta tai ilman happea liuotettuna jäteveteen EDI-ilmastimien kautta. Laskelmat osoittivat uusien EDI-ilmastimien hankinnan olevan edullisin vaihtoehto pitkällä aikavälillä. Vaikka EDI-ilmastimien investointikustannukset ovat korkeat, tulevat ne käyttökustannuksiltaan kaikkein edullisimmaksi. Vesilaitokselta tulevan rautasuolasakan fosforia saostavaa vaikutusta tutkittiin laboratoriossa astiakokein. Näytteet otettiin vesilaitokselta jätevesilaitokselle menevästä rautasuolasakasta sekä esiselkeyttimen kirkasteesta. Näitä eri suhteissa keskenään sekoittamalla saatiin selville, että rautasuolasakka ja sakan mukana tuleva reagoimaton rautasuola saostavat liukoista ja kokonaisfosforia esiselkeytyksessä.

Elevated serum phosphorus, calcium, and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels are associated with cardiovascular disease in chronic renal disease. This study evaluated the effects of sucroferric oxyhydroxide (PA21), a new iron-based phosphate binder, versus lanthanum carbonate (La) and sevelamer carbonate (Se), on serum FGF23, phosphorus, calcium, and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) concentrations, and the development of vascular calcification in adenine-induced chronic renal failure (CRF) rats. After induction of CRF, renal function was significantly impaired in all groups: uremic rats developed severe hyperphosphatemia, and serum iPTH increased significantly. All uremic rats (except controls) then received phosphate binders for 4 weeks. Hyperphosphatemia and increased serum iPTH were controlled to a similar extent in all phosphate binder-treatment groups. Only sucroferric oxyhydroxide was associated with significantly decreased FGF23. Vascular calcifications of the thoracic aorta were decreased by all three phosphate binders. Calcifications were better prevented at the superior part of the thoracic and abdominal aorta in the PA21 treated rats. In adenine-induced CRF rats, sucroferric oxyhydroxide was as effective as La and Se in controlling hyperphosphatemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and vascular calcifications. The role of FGF23 in calcification remains to be confirmed.

Tässä työssä tarkastellaan haja-asutusalueilla käytössä olevia kiinteistökohtaisia jäteveden käsittelymenetelmiä. Koelaitteistona oli biologinen pienpuhdistamo, jonka toimintaa tutkittiin tavanomaisessa kotitalouskäytössä. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää jäteveden biologisen suodatuksen soveltuvuutta haja-asutuksen jätevesien käsittelyyn. Kirjallisuusosiossa käsitellään haja-asutuksen jätevesien aiheuttamia ympäristövaikutuksia, ympäristölainsäädäntöä ja yleisesti käytössä olevia erilaisia jäteveden käsittelymenetelmiä, sekä vaihtoehtoisia käymäläratkaisuja. Ennen kokeellisen osuuden alkua asennettiin pienpuhdistamo oheislaitteineen omakotitalon viemärijärjestelmään. Tämän jälkeen päästiin tutkimaan puhdistamon puhdistustehokkuutta ja ympäristökuormitusta lähtevästä jätevedestä keräilynäyttein. Puhdistamolta lähtevän jäteveden kuormitusarvoja verrattiin Ympäristöministeriössä suunnitteilla oleviin enimmäisrajoihin: BOD7 5 g/(d,as), kokonaisfosfori 0,33 g/(d,as) ja kokonaistyppi 8,4 g/(d,as). Mitatut BOD7- ja kokonaistyppikuormitukset alittivat raja-arvot kerran. Muilla mittauskerroilla kuormitus oli enimmäisrajoja suurempi. Kokonaisfosforikuormitus oli kaikilla mittauskerroilla moninkertainen enimmäisrajaan verrattuna. Puhdistamon todellinen BOD7-reduktio oli noin 60 %. Kokonaisfosforin ja kokonaistypen reduktiot vaihtelivat paljon ollen kokonaisfosforilla korkeimmillaan 12 % ja kokonaistypellä 29 %.

The optimal diet for chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an issue frequently brought up by patients and/or their relatives during outpatient visits. For patients without malnutrition who are motivated and supported by an experienced multidisciplinary team, the optimal protein intake of 0,6 g/kg of ideal body weight/day is recommended to halt the progression of CKD. A calorie intake of 30 to 35 kcal/kg of ideal body weight/day is necessary to reduce the risk of malnutrition from a low protein diet and to maintain a neutral nitrogen balance. A low-salt diet, namely 5 to 6 g/d, is useful to optimize the treatment of hypertension associated with CKD and to limit fluid overload. At the advanced stage of CKD, it is also necessary to restrict the intake of phosphorus and sometimes potassium. Given the complexity of optimal renal diet, coordination between general practitioners, nephrologists and dietitians is essential to foster optimal care.

N-type as well P-type top-gate microcrystalline silicon thin film transistors (TFTs) are fabricated on glass substrates at a maximum temperature of 200 °C. The active layer is an undoped μc-Si film, 200 nm thick, deposited by Hot-Wire Chemical Vapor. The drain and source regions are highly phosphorus (N-type TFTs) or boron (P-type TFTs)-doped μc-films deposited by HW-CVD. The gate insulator is a silicon dioxide film deposited by RF sputtering. Al-SiO 2-N type c-Si structures using this insulator present low flat-band voltage,-0.2 V, and low density of states at the interface D it=6.4×10 10 eV -1 cm -2. High field effect mobility, 25 cm 2/V s for electrons and 1.1 cm 2/V s for holes, is obtained. These values are very high, particularly the hole mobility that was never reached previously.

The objective of my thesis is to assess mechanisms of ecological community control in macroalgal communities in the Baltic Sea. In the top-down model, predatory fish feed on invertebrate mesograzers, releasing algae partly from grazing pressure. Such a reciprocal relationship is called trophic cascade. In the bottom-up model, nutrients increase biomass in the food chain. The nutrients are first assimilated by algae and, via food chain, increase also abundance of grazers and predators. Previous studies on oceanic shores have described these two regulative mechanisms in the grazer - alga link, but how they interact in the trophic cascades from fish to algae is still inadequately known. Because the top-down and bottom-up mechanisms are predicted to depend on environmental disturbances, such as wave stress and light, I have studied these models at two distinct water depths. There are five factorial field experiments behind the thesis, which were all conducted in the Finnish Archipelago Sea. In all the experiments, I studied macroalgal colonization - either density, filament length or biomass - on submerged colonization substrates. By excluding predatory fish and mesograzers from the algal communities, the studies compared the strength of the top-down control to natural algal communities. A part of the experimental units were, in addition, exposed to enriched nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, which enabled testing of bottom-up control. These two models of community control were further investigated in shallow (<1 m) and deep (ca. 3 m) water. Moreover, the control mechanisms were also expected to depend on grazer species. Therefore different grazer species were enclosed into experimental units and their impacts on macroalgal communities were followed specifically. The community control in the Baltic rocky shores was found to follow theoretical predictions, which have not been confirmed by field studies before. Predatory fish limited grazing impact, which was seen as denser algal communities and longer algal filaments. Nutrient enrichment increased density and filament length of annual algae and, thus, changed the species composition of the algal community. The perennial alga Fucus vesiculosusA and the red alga Ceramium tenuicorne suffered from the increased nutrient availabilities. The enriched nutrient conditions led to denser grazer fauna, thereby causing strong top-down control over both the annual and perennial macroalgae. The strength of the top-down control seemed to depend on the density and diversity of grazers and predators as well as on the species composition of macroalgal assemblages. The nutrient enrichment led to, however, weaker limiting impact of predatory fish on grazer fauna, because fish stocks did not respond as quickly to enhanced resources in the environment as the invertebrate fauna. According to environmental stress model, environmental disturbances weaken the top-down control. For example, on a wave-exposed shore, wave stress causes more stress to animals close to the surface than deeper on the shore. Mesograzers were efficient consumers at both the depths, while predation by fish was weaker in shallow water. Thus, the results supported the environmental stress model, which predicts that environmental disturbance affects stronger the higher a species is in the food chain. This thesis assessed the mechanisms of community control in three-level food chains and did not take into account higher predators. Such predators in the Baltic Sea are, for example, cormorant, seals, white-tailed sea eagle, cod and salmon. All these predatory species were recently or are currently under intensive fishing, hunting and persecution, and their stocks have only recently increased in the region. Therefore, it is possible that future densities of top predators may yet alter the strengths of the controlling mechanisms in the Baltic littoral zone.

A method for the determination of phosphorus in steel samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, using the Zeeman effect background correction and the STPF conditions is proposed. The effect of iron (III) on the phosphorus signal was studied. It was verified, through the pyrolysis temperature curves, that iron (III) is an efficient chemical modifier, thermically stabilizing phosphorus up to 1400ºC. The phosphorus signal increases with the iron (III) concentration, but in the range, which corresponds to the usual concentrations of iron in the sample solutions, the increase is small. Phosphorus was determined in three standard reference materials, after its dissolution in a mixture of hydrochloric and perchloric acids in a PTFE bomb. The agreement with the certified concentration values was excellent. Iron (III) was added to the reference analytical solutions prepared in the blank of the dissolution, while the sample solutions were measured directly, since they already contained the modifier. The detection limit (k = 2) was 0.0042% of phosphorus in the steel sample.
