BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Laboratory studies have been used to identify nitric oxide as a notable mediator in neuronal death after acute brain injury. To our knowledge, this has not previously been confirmed with in vivo study in humans. Our purpose was to seek in vivo evidence for the induction of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in human acute brain injury by using proton MR spectroscopy.

METHODS: In vitro proton MR spectra were obtained in neural extracts from 30 human cadavers, and in vivo spectra were obtained in 20 patients with acute brain injury and in a similar number of control subjects.

RESULTS: We identified a unique peak at 3.15 ppm by using in vivo proton MR spectroscopy in eight of 20 patients with acute brain injury but not in 20 healthy volunteers (P < .002). On the basis of in vitro data, we have tentatively assigned this peak to citrulline, a NOS by-product.

CONCLUSION:
To our knowledge, our findings suggest, for the first time, that excitotoxicity may occur in human acute brain injury. Confirmation with the acquisition of spectra in very early acute cerebral injury would provide a rationale for the use of neuroprotective agents in these conditions, as well as a new noninvasive method for quantification.

While scholars have paid much attention to YouTube in a Web 2.0 environment, the YouTube blockbuster is yet to be discussed as part of this convergence culture. It differs from transmedia storytelling in that no single company owns or controls the characters or concepts. Once users have elevated videos with rich narrative qualities to the heights of fame within YouTube and other virtual social networks, they are taken from the YouTube archive by global commercial media and given new exchange values in traditional media forms such as books, films, television shows and ancillary products, using fragmented classical narrative techniques to do so. This paper traces the history of the blockbuster as a way of large commercial media adapting to social and technological change after World War II, to its refinements in the 1970s to cater for younger audiences and changes in the media landscape, to its most recent incarnation in YouTube. We argue that the economic and cultural values of the blockbuster are being transformed and refigured by the new form it has begun to take within convergence culture.

By-products from most industries become waste when they are not recovered. This article gives examples of by-product recovery from industries such as pulp and paper, dairy, pig farm and food processing.

Although the recovery of by-products will require new processes, the investments on those processes will be paid-back easily from the benefits brought by those by-products. Also, in order to have a sustainable development, by-product recover will play a significant role in all industries in the near future.

We investigate the problem of averaging values on lattices, and in particular on discrete product lattices. This problem arises in image processing when several color values given in RGB, HSL, or another coding scheme, need to be combined. We show how the arithmetic mean and the median can be constructed by minimizing appropriate penalties, and we discuss which of them coincide with the Cartesian product of the standard mean and median. We apply these functions in image processing. We present three algorithms for color image reduction based on minimizing penalty functions on discrete product lattices.

In this work we present the concept of penalty function over a Cartesian product of lattices. To build these mappings, we make use of restricted dissimilarity functions and distances between fuzzy sets. We also present an algorithm that extends the weighted voting method for a fuzzy preference relation.

Dietary lipids and fatty acids are not only fundamental in determining animal performance, but also determine the eating qualities of animal products. Several methods have been used to quantify fatty acid metabolism but most involve expensive in vitro approaches that are not suitable for most laboratories. Furthermore, there is considerable variation between methods with regard to enzyme activity, which makes comparison of results between studies difficult. The recently developed whole-body fatty acid balance method (WBFABM) is a simple and reliable in vivo method for assessing fatty acid metabolism, including rates of liponeogenesis and de novo fatty acid production, β-oxidation of fatty acids and bioconversion (elongation and desaturation) of fatty acids to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Initially developed for implementation with a fish model, the WBFABM has proven to be a simple and effective method that can be used in any laboratory equipped with a gas chromatography unit. Since its development, it has been used in several farmed finfish feeding trials and in broiler chicken feeding trials. The WBFABM is currently used at research institutions worldwide and its use is increasing in popularity among animal scientists. With this method, it is possible to track the fate of individual dietary fatty acids within the body. The WBFABM could contribute significantly to information generated by animal feeding trials.

For a small open economy with consumption-based pollution emissions, the first-best optimal policy prescription is free trade along with a Pigouvian tax on emissions. Therefore, a package of coordinated tax reform by replacing tariffs with emission taxes can lower pollution emissions and increase market access and hence improve residents’ welfare and government revenue, as long as the initial tariffs are relatively high. Numerical simulations confirm the results obtained.
