In the first chapter of this thesis, published works found in the literature about hexacyclinic acid and FR182877 are reported and commented. A quick summary of the previous work done in the Prunet group is also described. In the second and third chapter, a more detailed account of the work undertaken during this PhD was given. Firstly, syntheses of two ABC tricycles incorporating tert-butyl and (trimethylsilyl)ethyl esters were undertaken. These syntheses include two key steps previously developed in the group, a diastereoselective Michael addition and a Snider cyclisation. Multiple conditions for the hydrolysis of the esters were attempted but none of them gave the desired product. The main part of this work is focused on the synthesis of a CDEF model and in particular about the development of the key step, the formation of a nine-membered ring. Several DEF fragments were synthesised in short synthetic sequences and as single isomers. Six different synthetic pathways were developed in total and a novel method, a Michael/elimination reaction, was found to be a very efficient way to close the desired medium-size ring. From the nine-membered ring, regioselective reduction and palladiumcatalysed allylic substitution led to the formation of the CDF tricycle. Final steps of the synthesis were fruitless and led only to decomposition. A synthesis of a chiral C-ring was also developed during this PhD. II Finally, another project was undertaken, not related to hexacyclinic acid. Methodology developed in the group for the diastereoselective formation of trisubstituted alkenes employing a temporary silicon-tethered ring-closing metathesis was extended to homoallylic alcohols. The first steps of the method were similar to the previous methodology but the end-game had to be modified in favour of an oxidation/reduction sequence to successfully obtain the desired products with the correct geometry. In the fourth chapter, procedures and analytical data for the synthesised compounds previously described are reported.

This report was carried out for the completion of the Master degree in veterinary medicine and is divided in two parts. The first part includes the accompanied cases throughout the train-eeship, which was held at the Centro Hospitalar Veterinário of Porto, between September 1st 2015 and February 29th 2016. The second part includes a monograph on "Diabetic Ketoacidosis in dogs ", including the report of three clinical cases followed during the internship. Diabetic ke-toacidosis (DKA) is an urgent complication of diabetes mellitus, occurring mainly in animals that were never treated with long-action insulin. The diagnosis of DKA involves the history, clinical signs and detection of severe hyperglycemia, glycosuria and ketonuria. The diagnosis and treat-ment of concomitant diseases are the most challenging steps. The prognosis depends on the severity of acidosis and concomitant diseases, as well as the financial restrictions of the owners.

OF SUPERVISED TEACHING PRACTICE IN PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION AND THE 1ST CYCLE OF PRIMARY EDUCATION: ORGANIZATION OF EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS PROMOTERS OF EDUCATION IN NATURAL SCIENCES Abstract: The present report, elaborated in the scope of the Practice of Supervised Teaching in Pre-School and in the Primary Education, makes to known the learning processes inherent to the practice developed in context. In Pre-School Education, I created a training memorial that allowed me to reflect on the experiences I had live in the internship, making possible the acquisition of professional’s knowledges and learnings. In Primary School the internship also assumed a reflexive perspective which allowed me to learn the profession, but the dynamic of the work with the children allowed me to, equally, the realization of a project lined up with the action-research. The contexts where differentiated by their specificity, by the institutions geographic location, by the cultural situation and by the learning level where they were developed. The educational practice in Primary School occurred in the school EB/JI Galopim de Carvalho in Évora and the Pre-School practice occurred in Núcleo de Educação Infantil Colônia Z-11, in Brazil in the city of Florianopolis. In the matter of the investigative dimension, I dedicated special attention to the “Organization of Educative Environments Promoters of Natural Sciences Education”, to understand how learning sciences can contribute to scientifically literacy of the children, having in view the exercise of an informed citizenship. For this the children involved actively in the process of building their own knowledge. I resorted to authors who give me contributes to conceive, to plan and to fundament the practices, both from the pedagogical point of view and from the curricular contents point of view. To the collect and treat of data, I attend to the contexts where the work were realized, to the observations of the diverse actors in the internship supervision, to the daily plans and weekly reflections which I had been elaborating and which allowed me to concretize an indispensable analysis to the learnings achieve and presented in the present report.

Dry fermented sausages are highly appreciated food specialties, mainly in Portugal and other southern European countries. Therefore, all research efforts aiming at improving the food quality and safety of traditional dry sausages are of interest, since they are likely to result in products with higher added value and quality standards most suited to the requirements and concerns of the modern consumers. Among those efforts, it may be highlighted the studies involving innovative processing parameters and technologies to overcome practical problems gathered in the meat industry, which are mostly associated with food quality and safety. Additionally, characterization of traditional dry sausages and rationalization of their processing are essential for further achievement of any official certification. Thus, this article attempts to point out some research lines of highest interest in meat science (and particularly to the broad variety of regional dry fermented sausages), towards to the valorisation of technological, nutritional and commercial features. In addition, it is here emphasized the importance for the continuous improvement of the quality and safety of meat products as a way to respond to the current concerns regarding its consumption and the general advices in reducing its daily intake.

The aim of this thesis is to explore the possible influence of the food matrix on food quality attributes. Using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, the matrix-dependent properties of different foods were studied and some useful indices were defined to classify food products based on the matrix behaviour when responding to processing phenomena. Correlations were found between fish freshness indices, assessed by certain geometric parameters linked to the morphology of the animal, i.e. a macroscopic structure, and the degradation of the product structure. The same foodomics approach was also applied to explore the protective effect of modified atmospheres on the stability of fish fillets, which are typically susceptible to oxidation of the polyunsaturated fatty acids incorporated in the meat matrix. Here, freshness is assessed by evaluating the time-dependent change in the fish metabolome, providing an established freshness index, and its relationship to lipid oxidation. In vitro digestion studies, focusing on food products with different matrixes, alone and in combination with other meal components (e.g. seasoning), were conducted to investigate possible interactions between enzymes and food, modulated by matrix structure, which influence digestibility. The interaction between water and the gelatinous matrix of the food, consisting of a network of protein gels incorporating fat droplets, was also studied by means of nuclear magnetic relaxometry, in order to create a prediction tool for the correct classification of authentic and counterfeit food products protected by a quality label. This is one of the first applications of an NMR method focusing on the supramolecular structure of the matrix, rather than the chemical composition, to assess food authenticity. The effect of innovative processing technologies, such as PEF applied to fruit products, has been assessed by magnetic resonance imaging, exploiting information associated with the rehydration kinetics exerted by a modified food structure.

This thesis project presents a work based on the study of a particular class of amino-boranes, called bis-phenothiazine-aryl-boranes. The peculiarity of these compounds is the N-B-N chemical moiety and their complex conformational behaviour, due to the combination of steric hindrance and conjugation of the B-N bond. Our work is focused on two main products with different symmetry: bis-phenothiazine-2-methylnaphthyl-borane (2b) and bis-phenothiazine-anthracenyl-borane (2c). We firstly focused our attention on an effective way of synthesis, by optimizing both reaction conditions and purification. The products and co-products of interest were then characterized with NMR, mass spectroscopy and X-Ray diffraction on single crystals. The products were eventually analysed through conformational studies, by experimental techniques, such as dynamic NMR and EXSY, and by a theorical approach with DFT calculations.

This PhD work arises from the necessity to give a contribution to the energy saving field, regarding automotive applications. The aim was to produce a multidisciplinary work to show how much important is to consider different aspects of an electric car realization: from innovative materials to cutting-edge battery thermal management systems (BTMSs), also dealing with the life cycle assessment (LCA) of the battery packs (BPs). Regarding the materials, it has been chosen to focus on carbon fiber composites as their use allows realizing light products with great mechanical properties. Processes and methods to produce carbon fiber goods have been analysed with a special attention on the university solar car Emilia 4. The work proceeds dealing with the common BTMSs on the market (air-cooled, cooling plates, heat pipes) and then it deepens some of the most innovative systems such as the PCM-based BTMSs after a previous experimental campaign to characterize the PCMs. After that, a complex experimental campaign regarding the PCM-based BTMSs has been carried on, considering both uninsulated and insulated systems. About the first category the tested systems have been pure PCM-based and copper-foam-loaded-PCM-based BTMSs; the insulated tested systems have been pure PCM-based and copper-foam-loaded-PCM-based BTMSs and both of these systems equipped with a liquid cooling circuit. The choice of lighter building materials and the optimization of the BTMS are strategies which helps in reducing the energy consumption, considering both the energy required by the car to move and the BP state of health (SOH). Focusing on this last factor, a clear explanation regarding the importance of taking care about the SOH is given by the analysis of a BP production energy consumption. This is why a final dissertation about the life cycle assessment (LCA) of a BP unit has been presented in this thesis.
Study of the activity and enantioselectivity of alginate-based catalysts in Friedel-Crafts reactions
Resumo:
This thesis is part of a long-term project which aims to demonstrate for the first time that alginate gel beads can be used as chiral heterogeneous catalysts for enantioselective reactions. Alginate barium beads were prepared as previously optimized and applied to the Friedel-Crafts reaction between indoles and nitroalkenes. New substrates were tested, showing that the reaction can accommodate different nitroalkenes and indoles, affording the corresponding products with moderate yields and good enantioselectivities. However, aliphatic nitroalkenes cannot be used as they degrade under the catalytic reaction conditions. Preliminary study on the recyclability of the heterogeneous catalyst indicated a moderate stability of the catalyst, which can be used for few cycles with a slight erosion of enantioinducing power. Some directions for future improvements (storage and work-up solvent, use of ultrasonic bath) have been suggested.

The market for paint products with raw materials derived from renewable sources is growing rapidly in the building industry. When high performance in wet scrub resistance is required, “washable” paints are used. However, formulating products with Bio-Based raw materials generally results in a decrease in performances compared to similar products with raw materials from fossil sources. Therefore, a new formulation approach is needed to characterize polymeric binders from renewable sources and to consider the synergistic effects given by blends of polymeric binders of different origin and chemical structure. To date, the development of new formulations that imply less environmental impact is necessary if these products have to remain competitive in the marketplace. During the trainingship in IVAS S.p.A., washable paints with different PVC (Pigment Volume Concentration) were formulated and tested, evaluating whether the performance of paints with polymeric binders obtained from renewable sources was comparable to those with polymeric binders from fossil sources. The binders were chemically characterized by DSC, FT-IR and NMR analysis. Characterization tests of paints were focused on the evaluation of degree of whiteness, hiding power, dirt setting, and wet scrub resistance. Following the results obtained from the available binder combinations, it was possible to formulate two washable paints with comparable performances to those from fossil sources: paint A with 20 % of alkydic polymer and 80 % styrene/acrylic polymer and paint B with 40 % of alkydic polymer and 60 % styrene/acrylic polymer. Finally, the formulation was completed by adding the mainly Bio-Based derived additives generally used for this category of paints.
