Metacognitive therapy for alcohol abuse and dependence

While the consumption of alcohol has been part of the collective psyche of Australians since colonisation, the overconsumption of alcohol has been and continues to be a significant problem for the Australian community. Currently motivational interviewing and cognitive behaviour therapy are seen as the two standard psychological interventions for alcohol abuse and dependence. While these two approaches have shown significant impact on reducing alcohol abuse and dependence, they are not without their limitations. As such there is a need to continue to explore the application of newer developments in psychotherapy to the treatment problematic drinking behaviours. In this chapter we propose that Metacognitive Therapy is one such psychotherapy that is likely to provide a promising new approach to the treatment of alcohol abuse and dependence. In this chapter we will first briefly outline the history and significance of problematic drinking behaviours in Australia. Following this, we will quickly summarise the literature regarding motivational interviewing and cognitive behaviour therapy. Next we will provide an outline of the theoretical framework of Metacognitive Therapy and then describe two brief case studies illustrating the application of Metacognitive Therapy to the treatment of alcohol abuse and dependence. From this discussion we propose that the combination of Motivational Interviewing and Metacognitive Therapy is a promising new approach that can provide great assistance for the treatment of alcohol abuse or dependence.

Foundations of International Climate Law : Objectives, principles and methods

This chapter explores the objectives, principle and methods of climate law. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) lays the foundations of the international regime by setting out its ultimate objectives in Article 2, the key principles in Article 3, and the methods of the regime in Article 4. The ultimate objective of the regime – to avoid dangerous anthropogenic interference – is examined and assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are considered when seeking to understand the definition of this concept. The international environmental principles of: state sovereignty and responsibility, preventative action, cooperation, sustainable development, precaution, polluter pays and common but differentiated responsibility are then examined and their incorporation within the international climate regime instruments evaluated. This is followed by an examination of the methods used by the mitigation and adaptation regimes in seeking to achieve the objective of the UNFCCC. Methods of the mitigation regime include: domestic implementation of policies, setting of standards and targets and allocation of rights, use of flexibility mechanisms, and reporting. While it is noted that methods of the adaptation regime are still evolving, the latter includes measures such as impact assessments, national adaptation plans and the provision of funding.

Default, deadlock and remedies

The primary purpose of this chapter is to examine the effectiveness of common default provisions and the range of common law and equitable remedies available to a joint venture partner in the event of default by a co-venturer. Because of the various joint venture vehicles such as trusts, corporations, partnerships and others, it is proposed to deal only generally with these questions.

Heteronormativity, homonormativity, and violence

The existence of intimate partner violence within non heterosexual and/or noncisgendered relationships is gaining greater recognition. There are a handful of community organisations that offer services and assistance to victims and perpetrators of this violence (particularly gay men and lesbians), and the body of research literature in this area is slowly growing. While some critiques warn of the dangers of applying the theoretical and conceptual tools developed to understand relationship violence among heterosexuals directly to queer relationships, the inclusion of queer relationships in these discourses has for the most part been celebrated as a positive step forward, addressing the historical invisibility of sexual minorities in these areas. Over the past several decades, policy has become increasingly global. In economics, for example, policy has followed the so-called Washington Consensus of privatization, liberalization, and deregulation.
