Quintus Curtius before his sources: the episode of Alexander and the Scythians on the Tanais

Quintus Curtius found in his sources a speech where a Scythian censured Alexander, followed by the King’s reply. Curtius drastically abridged this second discourse in order to highlight the criticism of the Macedonian. The Scythian’s words have a striking rhetorical language and some allusions taken from Greek literature, in addition to possible indirect references to Caligula. Curtius declares that he follows his source word-for-word aiming to justify these inconsistencies, but also trying to hide the manipulations he has done to achieve his own narrative purposes.

Proyección y política cultural estadounidense en argentina (1928-1941)

El objetivo del artículo es analizar algunos aspectos de los orígenes de la “política cultural” estadounidense en Argentina. La atención se concentrará en el pasaje desde las declaraciones del presidente Hoover, que contribuyeron a favorecer un clima útil y propicio a la intensificación de los intercambios, a los primeros pasos concretos realizados en el periodo de la presidencia de Roosevelt. Se tratará, en particular, de individualizar las características de la cooperación establecida entre organismos estadounidenses y argentinos para favorecer la proyección cultural estadounidense en el país y el intercambio cultural entre Estados Unidos y Argentina, donde se iba intensificando la difusión de un sentimiento anti-imperialista, y que era entonces objetivo de formas de propaganda particularmente agresivas por parte de los regímenes totalitarios.

Vom Kaukasus bis in den Pamir und vom Tien-Shan zurück nach Moskau, St. Petersburg und Kiew: Die Geschichte der sowjetischen Bergsteiger und ihrer Formen von Gemeinschaft gewährt zum einen neue Einblicke in die Kultur-, Alltags- und Sozialgeschichte der stalinistischen Sowjetunion und in die Lebenswelten eines Teils der intellektuellen Elite, zum andern in die unterschiedliche Symbolik und Funktion dieser nichtrussischen Bergperipherien für das Selbstverständnis des multinationalen sowjetischen Herrschaftsgebiets. Das Machtzentrum Moskau ist dabei geographisch oft weit entfernt und doch stets präsent – ob in der politischen Symbolik vertikaler Berghierarchien (so am Pik Stalin mitten im Pamir) oder in den Repressionen des 'Grossen Terrors', der auch die Alpinisten traf. Die Studie stellt die Bergsteiger als erfolgreiche Akteure in eigener Sache ins Zentrum und eröffnet so eine Perspektive auf die Ebene zwischen Individuum und Staatsmacht im Stalinismus. Sie zeigt, wie die staatlichen Monopolorganisationen im Bereich des Sports und der Freizeit nicht nur der Kontrolle und Sozialisierung ins Sowjetsystem dienten, sondern auch als Ausgangspunkt für eigene Aktivitäten und manchmal sogar als halböffentliche Nischen des Rückzugs und der Kritik genutzt werden konnten. Der zeitliche Bogen spannt sich von den zwanziger bis zu den ausgehenden fünfziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ein ausführliches Einleitungskapitel bietet ausserdem einen Einblick in die Entstehung des russländischen Bergsteigens vor der Revolution.

O autor analisa os interesses europeus a defender no espaço marítimo, próximo ou distante, com base na presença de fluxos de tráfego comercial por via marítima, vitais ao desenvolvimento e sustentabilidade da economia europeia, reflete sobre a criação de um espaço militar de defesa e sobre o papel da União Europeia enquanto ator global. Conclui com um exame da cooperação entre a UE e a NATO, e o papel que esta ocupará na estratégia marítima europeia.

Neohornibrookella sorrentae (Chapman and Crespin, 1928) and allied ostracod taxa from the Neogene of southeastern Australia: systematic and palaeoceanographical relationships, palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography

Three closely allied shallow marine taxa, Neohornibrookella sorrentae (Chapman and Crespin), Neohornibrookella glyphica (Neil), and Neohornibrookella nepeani sp. nov. are recorded from latest early Miocene to late Pliocene strata in southeastern Australia. These taxa, together with Neohornibrookella quadranodosa (Holden) from the Miocene of Midway Island (Northwestern Hawaiian Islands), form a morphologically distinct group of relatively large species (the sorrentae-group) within the genus Neohornibrookella Jellinek. Latitudinal expansion of the subtropical and warm-temperate climatic belts together with the influence of warm western boundary surface currents associated with the North and South Pacific gyres, are likely to have played key roles in the Miocene dispersal of this species group. Species of the sorrentae-group first migrated south from equatorial west Pacific regions into southeastern Australia during the early Miocene, under the influence of the East Australian Current. During three time intervals (i) latest early Miocene, (ii) latest late Miocene and (iii) earliest late Pliocene, forceful pulses of the East Australian Current played a significant role in propelling the widespread distribution of thermophilic Neohornibrookella species across southeast Australian shallow marine realms. During intervening middle and late Miocene times, Neohornibrookella species are only sporadically present across the Bass Strait region of southeast Australia, indicating a weaker East Australian Current influence and the cooling influence of coastal upwelling. During the mid early Pliocene Neohornibrookella species disappeared from the western Bass Strait region, suggesting the complete exclusion of East Australian Current waters from this region. This was probably due to the counteracting influence of the eastward flowing Zeehan Current (extension of the Leeuwin Current) impinging on the western Bass Strait region. This mid early Pliocene palaeobiogeographical partition in Bass Strait, defined by the distribution of sorrentae-group species, is here termed the Bassian Gateway. The two species, N. sorrentae and N. glyphica, occur concurrently during the mid Miocene in southeast Australia, but are associated with different lithofacies. It is hypothesised that there is a heterochronic evolutionary relationship expressed in the ornament of these two species. The thaerocytherid genera Neohornibrookella Jellinek, Tenedocythere Sissingh and Bosasella Bonaduce are here included in the new ostracod subfamily Tenedocytherinae.

La problemática del saber en el Libro de Alexandre : Conocimiento, conquista y dominio

El propósito de la presentación será proponer una triple vertiente del saber (clerical-letrado, guerrero y real) que observamos en el personaje de Alejandro Magno y en la concepción que subyace en el Libro de Alexandre (a partir de aserciones, también, del narrador y otros personajes), en tanto testimonio de la emergencia de la literatura castellana a comienzos del siglo XIII. Asimismo, tendremos en cuenta y analizaremos el rol del saber en la legitimación de una empresa imperial y el lugar de la conquista, como 'corredora de límites', que permite la adquisición de nuevos conocimientos. En este sentido, haremos hincapié en la utilización del saber como instrumento de poder

La reforma universitaria desde sus grupos y revistas : Una reconstrucción de los proyectos y las disputas del movimiento estudiantil porteño de las primeras décadas del siglo XX (1914-1928)

La presente investigación se propone recuperar la densidad ideológica y material del movimiento político-cultural que se gestó en la ciudad de Buenos Aires en el marco de la Reforma Universitaria, y se ocupa de precisar las conexiones que esa cultura tramó con la registrada en las ciudades de Córdoba, La Plata, Montevideo y Santa Fe. Para ello son colocados en el centro del análisis los grupos (con sus publicaciones periódicas) animados por estudiantes universitarios porteños durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX. A su vez, la investigación se propone iluminar el itinerario intelectual de varios líderes estudiantiles y reconstruye la recepción que realizaron los reformistas de las tres figuras extranjeras que convocaron, a saber, el filósofo catalán Eugenio D?Ors, el fisiólogo judeoalemán Georg Nicolai y el economista, también judeoalemán, Alfons Goldschmidt. Si bien la investigación se apoya en los estudios previos sobre la Reforma Universitaria, la mayoría de los grupos, revistas y visitas aquí analizados permanecían hasta la actualidad muy poco explorados. Así, es fundamentalmente a través de un exhaustivo rastreo y análisis de las revistas, los archivos personales y la correspondencia de los protagonistas del movimiento estudiantil que la tesis busca iluminar todo un conjunto de prácticas, ideas y redes que terminarán conformando al estudiante como un nuevo actor de la sociedad moderna y a la Reforma Universitaria como un movimiento político-cultural de duradera proyección continental. Los distintos capítulos de la tesis exploran las iniciativas de los estudiantes universitarios porteños desde la fundación, durante la primera década del siglo XX, de centros de estudiantes y revistas que expresan reclamos estudiantiles de carácter gremial hasta la aparición de grupos y publicaciones estudiantiles que construyen una identidad socialista o nacionalista de la juventud universitaria, pasando por agrupaciones de carácter fundamentalmente cultural. Si bien el foco está puesto en la construcción del movimiento político-cultural de la Reforma, también es analizado el debate en torno del positivismo y el antipositivismo que atraviesa el proceso de configuración reformista. La primera parte de la tesis se concentra en la reconstrucción y el análisis de la sociabilidad e 5intervención propuestas por los tres grupos porteños que, en los años anteriores al estallido de la Reforma, más se empeñan en la construcción de una identidad estudiantil que exceda los reclamos gremiales. Esos grupos son: el Centro Ariel y su revista Ariel; el Ateneo de Estudiantes Universitarios y su revista Ideas; y el Colegio Novecentista y sus Cuadernos. La segunda parte de la tesis se detiene en las nuevas estrategias culturales que despliegan los grupos estudiantiles una vez que, hacia mediados de 1918, la Reforma y la coyuntura nacional e internacional instalan entre los estudiantes una fuerte preocupación política. Si bien hacia 1928 queda configurado un movimiento político-cultural reformista que, durante décadas, liga al estudiante a una identidad latinoamericanista y antiimperialista, esta parte de la investigación muestra que en los diez años anteriores tuvieron lugar diversas empresas reformistas que propusieron asociar la figura del estudiante a identidades políticas tan diversas como el nacionalismo de resonancias católicas o el socialismo revolucionario. Y entre esas olvidadas empresas la presente tesis identifica a la Federación de Asociación Culturales, la Unión Reformista y la Federación de Estudiantes Revolucionarios, así como las revistas Clarín, Revista Nacional, Bases, Insurrexit y Hoy
