This study's aim was to verify coping strategies among children aged between 7 and 12 years old who will be experiencing surgery and the potential relationship of coping strategies with sociodemographic variables, stress in children and in companions, and the child's prior experience with surgery. A total of 58 children hospitalized and waiting for elective surgeries responded to the Assessment Instrument of Coping to Hospitalization and an instrument to assess stress. The companion received a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Lipp Stress Symptom Inventory. Problem-solving strategies and distraction were the most frequent strategies used, while social withdrawal and opposition were the least frequent. Girls and children of stressful parents used emotion regulation strategies with significantly more frequency. Likewise, greater cognitive restructuring was observed in older children and those with prior experience with surgeries. The results show the need to consider the studied variables when developing pre-operative preparation programs.

Este estudo visa aprofundar as reflexões sobre as práticas de leitura e escrita efetivadas por pessoas jovens e adultas pouco escolarizadas. A partir das experiências vivenciadas enquanto educadora do Projeto de Educação de Pessoas Jovens e Adultas: Práticas e Desafios (PEJA) da Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp), câmpus de Rio Claro, que instigaram-me a olhar para as práticas de leitura e escrita de pessoas pouco escolarizadas, surgiram algumas indagações que aqui se colocam enquanto problemas da pesquisa: O que move as práticas de leitura e escrita efetivadas por esses sujeitos, pessoas comuns? E qual o sentido atribuído pelo sujeito que escreve e lê às suas próprias práticas de escrita e leitura? Pautando-se por uma abordagem qualitativa, o presente estudo se organiza iniciando-se pelo levantamento realizado nos trabalhos submetidos e encomendados, no período de 2000 a 2013, nos Grupos de Trabalho GT-18, GT-10 e GT-03, nas Reuniões Anuais da Associação Nacional de Pós-Graduação e Pesquisa em Educação (ANPEd) sobre a temática. Na sequência, aponto as contribuições teóricas de autores tais como Roger Chartier e Michel de Certeau sobre as práticas de ler e escrever, assumidas como práticas culturais. Por fim, apresento e comento tópicos das entrevistas realizadas com uma educanda que se faz poetisa no PEJA - Rio Claro e o levantamento dos escritos por ela produzidos, de modo a constituir um arquivo de sua produção escrita. A análise do material coletado nos faz perceber que tais práticas ultrapassam a esfera escolar produzindo outros sentidos; portanto o ensino escolarizado transcende a prática educativa escolar. Há que se refletir sobre a existência da diversidade de saberes e descobrir modos outros de realização de trabalhos que atrelem os saberes escolares e as práticas culturais

O tema abordado neste trabalho foi escolhido após uma experiência como monitora em um curso de informática para a terceira idade ministrado na Unesp - Câmpus de Rio Claro. A pesquisa é de caráter bibliográfico e teve como objetivo identificar e compreender possíveis benefícios e dificuldades que se mostram presentes em atividades envolvendo o uso de computadores por pessoas da terceira idade. A análise é feita com base em estudos teóricos sobre educação para a terceira idade em que se considera a qualidade de vida e desenvolvimento pessoal

The research discusses the pulmonary function of the students of SORRI that are part of the Project for the extension of the Department of Physical Education in Bauru Swimming for People with Disabilities during the aquatic activities, noting the changes in efficiency class of breathing with the practice of aquatic activity, by the analysis of the volume and respiratory capacity. The respiratory control is essential in the process of adaptation to the liquid medium, because a student who fails to immerse the face in the water will not be able to adopt a horizontal position sufficiently stable. The practice of aquatic activities requires a great effort of breathing. Therefore, the practice of aquatic activities influence favorably the breathing, because the movements performed in the water tone the diaphragm, which is the essential muscle of the breathing, allowing an improvement in pulmonary ventilation. For the purposes of this study, the sample was composed of 10 students of the SORRI of the city of Bauru forming part of the project Swimming for People with Disabilities, practicing swimming once a week for 1 hour. For the collection of lung volumes and capacities was used a transducer of air flow and a unit of data collection, model MP36, both of the brand Biopac connected to a computer, where the data were collected and recorded for later analysis. Two tests were carried out in a day with each participant in the project of swimming, and a test at the beginning of the lesson, at rest, and another after a series of 10 breaths carried out within the swimming pool. These tests were performed in the months of March and April. The analysis of the data was through the medium of the figures and also individually, noting the changes in respiratory function of students practicing aquatic activities, without which there would be no comparison between the participants. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the visual control of braking a bicycle when the cyclist is surprised by an obstacle in his way. According to Lee (1976), visually controlled braking based on time to collision information utilizes the optic variables tau and its first derivative in time, tau-dot, to initiating the braking action and regulating its intensity. Seven young adults performed a bicycle braking task in curvilinear trajectory under distinct velocity (high, medium, and low) and uncertainty (certainty and uncertainty) conditions. Results showed that, independently of velocity and uncertainty levels, participants utilized tau and tau-dot to initiating and regulating the braking action, avoiding collision with the obstacle. Cognitive, attentional, and other psychological factors resulting from both increased velocity and uncertainty were not capable of altering the use of time to collision information, corroborating the tested hypothesis

We interviewed 21 farmers in order to access which sanitary practices adopted in the production systems of beef cattle on farms located in São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rondonia. The survey was conducted through a qualitative approach to the collection of data obtained through questionnaire and personal interview with the landowners. We questioned the attitudes and sanitation procedures in these current production systems such as veterinary assistance, preventive health practices and disease surveillance, knowledge of health hazards for the safe production of food, animal feed, vaccine and immunizations, registration system, measures with newborns, products used in the environment and animals, grace period, employee training, destination of the dead animals, among others. Along with the data found that only 30% of properties had veterinary care, 67% said they meet the expiration dates of the products, although it was not mentioned on the products if there were any. In only 48% of properties were veterinarians who prescribed drugs to animals. Only two of the owners confirmed buying and using expired products in animals and only 48% have received some training on the property. In this setting, it is evident that farmers should be better prepared for insertion of its products in a highly demanding and competitive market. In this context, add value to the product depends mainly on the condition of sanitation of the herds.

Currently, responsible ownership of pets has been widely discussed. In the past, they were brought to our society and it is our duty nowadays to establish this relationship between man and animal. This study aimed at evaluating the level of knowledge of elderly dog owners about responsible ownership with emphasis on control of canine visceral leishmaniasis and at the same time make them aware of the precautions to be taken. An individual questionnaire on the subject was applied to 68 elderly people. They all belong to Nossa Senhora Aparecida Village, located on the suburb of Araçatuba-SP. Along with the interview, veterinary students advised them on the control of canine visceral leishmaniasis, the importance of sterilization in cats and dogs and the responsible ownership, with distribution of informative leaflets. Fecal samples from dogs were collected by the owners and they were sent to the Laboratory of Parasitology and Parasitic Diseases at Odontology Faculty at Araçatuba UNESP to be processed through the Willis-Mollay technique. Anthelmintic were acquired in the project and donated for the treatment of animals tested positive. 56.25% (63/112) out of the total number of dogs examined were females, aged between one and ten years. Only 32.14% (36/112) had access to the streets, 90.18% (101/112) were not castrated and 58% (65/112) were mixed breed (SRD). Among the owners, 88.24% (60/68) did not know what zoonosis is and 14.71% (10/68) were not aware what leishmaniasis is. Regarding the researched animals, 62.50% (70/112) had ectoparasites (fleas and ticks). It was also observed that 67.86% (76/112) of dogs had been dewormed, but in 59.82% (36/112) of cases, the intervals between these processes were irregular. For females, 85.71% (54/63) had no prevention heat and it was noted that 19.51% (8 / 41) had already given birth, had dystocia. With these data we can confirm the lack of information by these elderly and the need to establish community awareness and continued programs.

The Araçatuba School of Dentistry along with the Veterinary Medical Course, both from UNESP, develop the Extension Project called “Cão Cidadão UNESP” (Unesp Citizen Dog), which is accomplished in some assistance societies, including the Dental Assistance Center to Persons with Disabilities (“Centro de Assistência Odontológica à Pessoa com Deficiência” - CAOE-UNESP). This project develops a multidisciplinary work involving professionals and students from health sciences. The project aims at developing activities to relieve stress, fear and anxiety of patients with disabilities in the moment that precedes the dental treatment. The team performs procedures such as walking with the dogs and patients, toothbrushing the dogs so the patients can see it, in order to learn and motivate themselves, dressing the dogs with some accessories such as white clothes, mask and cap, to associate with image of the dentist, making this relationship more pleasant and welcoming. It is evidenced, through reports of professionals, that the patients become calmer and more collaborative with the dentists, distracting them from the treatment focus and creating a positive bond. It should be noted that this experience has contributed to motivate the professionals to introduce new techniques for dental approach, such as Animal Assisted Therapy. It also shows that animals can be very helpful in treating people with disabilities, because they offer a lot of love, companionship and provide moments of joy and happiness to the participants.

People with disabilities require special dental care according to the type of disability, degree of involvement of intellectual and motor complications, such individuals may have dental problems that require specific training of the dentist. The objective of this study was a literature review emphasizing the need for early and preventive dental treatment for people with disabilities and training and technical knowledge necessary for quality service performed by the dentist. The literature review was conducted primarily using articles published nationally, to establish the development of dentistry for special patients in Brazil, thus emphasizing some policies and measures adopted in certain areas of the country. It was concluded that preventive care is essential and that the projects of health promotion are important facilitators of social inclusion and provide increased success in dental care. Technical training of professionals is extremely important, therefore, be important to trace an appropriate treatment plan and establish communication with the multidisciplinary team involved in patient care.
