This project aimed to quantify the potential for wild birds to spread genetically modified seeds from their area of planting to adjacent areas, through ingestion and transport in the gut (endozoochorous transmission). We addressed this by assessing whether seed viability was affected by passage through the avian gut. We sought to address this question by testing the effects of ingestion of a number of key agricultural crops by three common wild bird pest species.

Few studies have examined longitudinal associations between fish consumption and depression; none have defined depression using a diagnostic tool. We investigated whether fish consumption was associated with fewer new depression episodes in a national study of Australian adults. In 2004–2006, 1,386 adults aged 26–36 years (38% males) completed a 127-item (9 fish items) food frequency questionnaire. Fish intake was examined continuously (times/week) and dichotomously (reference group: <2 times/week). During 2009–2011, the lifetime version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview was administered by telephone. New episodes of major depression/dysthymic disorder (since baseline) were defined using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. During follow-up, 160 (18.8%) women and 70 (13.1%) men experienced depression. For women, each additional weekly serving of fish consumed at baseline decreased the risk of having a new depressive episode by 6% (adjusted relative risk = 0.94, 95% confidence interval: 0.87, 1.01). Women who ate fish ≥2 times/week at baseline had a 25% lower risk of depression during follow-up than those who ate fish <2 times/week (adjusted relative risk = 0.75, 95% confidence interval: 0.57, 0.99). Reverse causation was also suggested but appeared to be restricted to persons with recent depression. Fish consumption was not associated with depression in men. These findings provide further evidence that fish consumption may be beneficial for women's mental health.

Breakfast consumption is important to health; however, adolescents often skip breakfast, and an increased understanding of the breakfast consumption patterns of adolescents is needed. The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of breakfast eating, including the content and context, in an adolescent sample from Australia and England.

Reduced consumption of meat, particularly red meat, is associated with numerous health benefits. While past research has examined demographic and cognitive correlates of meat-related diet identity and meat consumption behavior, the predictive influence of personal values on meat-consumption attitudes and behaviour, as well as gender differences therein, has not been explicitly examined, nor has past research focusing on 'meat' generally addressed 'white meat' and 'fish/seafood' as distinct categories of interest. Two hundred and two Australians (59.9% female, 39.1% male, 1% unknown), aged 18 to 91 years (M = 31.42, SD = 16.18), completed an online questionnaire including the Schwartz Values Survey, and measures of diet identity, attitude towards reduced consumption of each of red meat, white meat, and fish/seafood, as well as self-reported estimates of frequency of consumption of each meat type. Results showed that higher valuing of Universalism predicted more positive attitudes towards reducing, and less frequent consumption of, each of red meat, white meat, and fish/seafood, while higher Power predicted less positive attitudes towards reducing, and more frequent consumption of, these meats. Higher Security predicted less positive attitudes towards reducing, and more frequent consumption, of white meat and fish/seafood, while Conformity produced this latter effect for fish/seafood only. Despite men valuing Power more highly than women, women valuing Universalism more highly than men, and men eating red meat more frequently than women, gender was not a significant moderator of the value-attitude-behavior mediations described, suggesting that gender's effects on meat consumption may not be robust once entered into a multivariate model of MRD attitudes and behaviour. Results support past findings associating Universalism, Power, and Security values with meat-eating preferences, and extend these findings by articulating how these values relate specifically to different types of meat.

Across the world, it has been estimated that approximately 270 million people participate in community football clubs. However, the community sports club setting is associated with high levels of risky alcohol consumption. The study examined if sporting club alcohol management practices are associated with risky consumption of alcohol by club members while at the club, and also whether such consumption is directly and indirectly associated with club member overall hazardous alcohol consumption.

Background: Links between alcohol consumption and depression have been reported; however, associations amongst the elderly remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and self-reported depression in a population-based sample of 514 men aged 65+ (median 76.4yr, IQR 71.2-82.4). Methods: Alcohol intake over the previous 12 months was estimated from a food frequency questionnaire. Participants were classified as non-drinkers or habitual consumers of ≤2 or ≥3 standard drinks per day. Symptoms of past and 12-month depression were ascertained by self-report based on DSM-IV criteria. Using logistic regression, we estimated the association between alcohol intake and depression, adjusting for age and lifestyle factors. Results: There were 91 non-drinkers (17.7%), 249 (48.4%) consuming ≤2 drinks/day, and 174 (33.9%) consuming ≥3 drinks/day. Forty eight (9.3%) were identified as having lifetime depression and 31 (6.0%) with 12-month depression. With those consuming ≤2 drinks/day as the reference, the odds of lifetime depression were greater for non-drinkers (OR=2.50, 95% CI 1.15-5.44) and tended to be greater for those consuming ≥3 (OR=1.45 95% CI 0.70-3.00). After excluding those with past depression, the likelihood of 12-month depression tended to be greater for non-drinkers (OR=2.38 95% CI 0.89-6.38) and those consuming ≥3 drinks/day (OR=1.68 95% CI 0.70-4.07). These associations were not explained by age, mobility, smoking, BMI, SES or number of medications. Conclusions: These results suggest a U-shaped relationship between alcohol consumption and depression in this sample of elderly men.
