Kandidaatintyö käsittelee yrityksen strategista johtamista. Työn tavoitteena on esitellä kattavasti markkina- ja resurssilähtöinen yritysstrategia, ja tuoda esille näkökulmien erot, sekä vaikutus yrityksen päätöksentekoon. Molemmat mallit käsittelevät yrityksen kykyä kehittää ja pitää yllä pysyvää kilpailuetua. Työssä esitellään myös dynaamiset kyvykkyydet – malli, joka on resurssipohjaisen näkemyksen seuraava evoluutio. Markkinalähtöisessä mallissa painotetaan markkinainformaation keräämistä ja levittämistä läpi organisaation. Resurssipohjaisen mallin mukaan pysyvää kilpailuetua saavutetaan kehittämällä yrityksen sisäisiä elementtejä. Dynaamiset kyvykkyydet perustuu sisäisten elementtien kehittämiseen, mutta ottaa huomioon myös markkinoiden jatkuvan kehittymisen.

Työn tarkoituksena on kuvata ja ymmärtää ylimmän johdon osaamista ja osaamisen strategista merkitystä osuustoimintayrityksen liiketoiminnassa. Tavoitteena on ymmärtää, millainen rooli osaamisella on osuustoimintayrityksen johtamisessa ja liiketoiminnassa sekä tutkia osuustoiminnallisten erityispiirteiden vaikutusta johtamiseen. Työ on luonteeltaan kvalitatiivinen, ja sen tutkimusaineisto koostuu S-ryhmän ylimmässä johdossa loka-joulukuussa 2007 tehdyistä teemahaastatteluista sekä kohdeorganisaation johtamista käsittelevistä kirjallisista dokumenteista. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että osaamisen strateginen rooli on kasvanut kohdeorganisaatiossa tasaisesti 1980-luvulta lähtien. Johtamisen osaamisvaatimukset ovat samaan aikaan kasvaneet ja monipuolistuneet. Erityisesti ihmisten johtamiseen sekä yritysverkoston johtamiseen liittyvän osaamisen merkityksen kasvu on ollut huomattava. Lisäksi tutkimus esittää väitteen, jonka mukaan yrityksen osuustoiminnalliset erityispiirteet vaikuttavat merkittävästi johdon osaamisvaatimuksiin.

The purpose of this study was to increase the understanding of the role and nature of trust in asymmetric technology partnership formation. In the knowledge-based "learning race" knowledge is considered as a primary source for competitive advantage. In the emerging ICT sector the high pace of technological change, the convergence of technologies and industries as well as the increasing complexity and uncertainty have forced even the largest players to seek cooperation for complementary knowledge and capabilities. Small technology firms need the complementary resources and legitimacy of the large firms to grow and compete in the global market place. Most of the earlier research indicates, however, that partnerships with asymmetric size, managerial resources and cultures have failed. A basic assumption supported by earlier research was that trust is a critical factor in asymmetric technology partnership formation. Asymmetric technology partnership formation is a dynamic and multi-dimensional process, and consequently a holistic research approach was selected. Research issue was approached from different levels: the individual decision-maker, the firm and the relationship between the parties. Also the impact of the dynamic environment and technology content was analyzed. A multitheoretical approach and a qualitative research method with in-depth interviews in five large ICT companies and eight small ICT companies enabled a holistic and rich view of the research issue. Study contributes on the scarce understanding on the nature and evolution of trust in asymmetric technology partnership formation. It sheds also light on the specific nature of asymmetric technology partnerships. The partnerships were found to be tentative and the diverse strategic intent of small and large technology firms appeared as a major challenge. The role of the boundary spanner was highlighted as a possibility to match the incompatible organizational cultures. A shared vision was found to be a pre-condition for individual-based fast trust leading to intuitive decision-making and experimentation. The relationships were tentative and they were continuously re-evaluated through the key actors' sense making of the technology content, asymmetry and the dynamic environment. A multi-dimensional conceptualization for trust was created and propositions on the role and nature of trust for further research are given. Omistajalähtöisen kulttuurin voimistumisen myötä omistajaohjausjärjestelmät ovat nousseet merkittävään asemaan yritysten toiminnassa. Tämä tutkielma osallistuu omistajaohjauksesta käytävään akateemiseen ja liikkeenjohdolliseen keskusteluun. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata ja ymmärtää asiakasomisteisten osuuskauppojen omistajaohjaukseen liittyviä erityispiirteitä ja haasteita. Tutkimuksen tavoitteisiin pyritään vastaamaan analysoimalla tutkimusta varten kerättyä S-ryhmän alueosuuskauppojen hallintoneuvostojen puheenjohtajien haastatteluista (22 kpl) ja S-ryhmän julkaisemasta kirjallisesta materiaalista koostuvaa laadullista aineistoa. Tutkimuksen mukaan osuuskauppojen omistajaohjaus poikkeaa sijoittajaomisteisten yritysten omistajaohjauksesta paitsi hallintotapaan, rahoitukseen ja omistusoikeuksiin liittyvissä kysymyksissä, myös siinä, että osuuskaupoissa omistajakunta on passiivista, eikä aina edes tiedosta omistajuuttaan. Haasteita osuuskauppojen omistajaohjaukseen tuovat luottamushenkilöiden edustavuuteen ja osaamistasoon, tiedonkulkuun, omistajien lyhyen ja pitkän tähtäimen etujen tasapainottamiseen sekä liikkeenjohdon vallan korostumiseen liittyvät tekijät.

BACKGROUND: Available methods to simulate nucleotide or amino acid data typically use Markov models to simulate each position independently. These approaches are not appropriate to assess the performance of combinatorial and probabilistic methods that look for coevolving positions in nucleotide or amino acid sequences. RESULTS: We have developed a web-based platform that gives a user-friendly access to two phylogenetic-based methods implementing the Coev model: the evaluation of coevolving scores and the simulation of coevolving positions. We have also extended the capabilities of the Coev model to allow for the generalization of the alphabet used in the Markov model, which can now analyse both nucleotide and amino acid data sets. The simulation of coevolving positions is novel and builds upon the developments of the Coev model. It allows user to simulate pairs of dependent nucleotide or amino acid positions. CONCLUSIONS: The main focus of our paper is the new simulation method we present for coevolving positions. The implementation of this method is embedded within the web platform Coev-web that is freely accessible at http://coev.vital-it.ch/, and was tested in most modern web browsers.

A method for generating beams with arbitrary polarization and shape is proposed. Our design requires the use of a Mach-Zehnder set-up combined with translucent liquid crystal displays in each arm of the interferometer; in this way, independent manipulation of each transverse beam components is possible. The target of this communication is to develop a numerical procedure for calculating the holograms required for dynamically encode any amplitude value and polarization state in each point of the wavefront. Several examples demonstrating the capabilities of the method are provided.

This study analyzes the capillarity and fibre-type distribution of six locomotory muscles of gulls. The morphological basis and the oxygen supply characteristics of the skeletal muscle of a species with a marked pattern of gliding flight are established, thus contributing to a better understanding of the physiology of a kind of flight with low energetic requirements. The four wing muscles studied (scapulotriceps, pectoralis, scapulohumeralis, and extensor metacarpi) exhibited higher percentages of fast oxidative glycolytic fibres (>70%) and lower percentages of slow oxidative fibres (<16%) than the muscles involved in nonflight locomotion (gastrocnemius and iliotibialis). Capillary densities ranged from 816 to 1,233 capillaries mm(-2), having the highest value in the pectoralis. In this muscle, the fast oxidative glycolytic fibres had moderate staining for succinate dehydrogenase and relatively large fibre sizes, as deduced from the low fibre densities (589-665 fibres mm(-2)). All these findings are seen as an adaptive response for gliding, when the wing is held outstretched by isometric contractions. The leg muscles studied included a considerable population of slow oxidative fibres (>14% in many regions), which suggests that they are adapted to postural activities. Regional variations in the relative distributions of fibre types in muscle gastrocnemius may reflect different functional demands placed on this muscle during terrestrial and aquatic locomotion. The predominance of oxidative fibres and capillary densities under 1,000 capillaries mm(-2) in leg muscles is probably a consequence of an adaptation for slow swimming and maintenance of the posture on land rather than for other locomotory capabilities, such as endurance or sprint activities.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is the key metric of operational excellence. OEE monitors the actual performance of equipment relative to its performance capabilities under optimal manufacturing conditions. It looks at the entire manufacturing environment measuring, in addition to the equipment availability, the production efficiency while the equipment is available to run products, as well as the efficiency loss that results from scrap, rework, and yield losses. The analysis of the OEE provides improvement opportunities for the operation. One of the tools used for OEE improvement is Six Sigma DMAIC methodology which is a set of practices originally developed to improve processes by eliminating defects. It asserts the continuous efforts to reduce variation in process outputs as key to business success, as well as the possibility of measurement, analysis, improvement and control of manufacturing and business processes. In the case of the Bottomer line AD2378 in Papsac Maghreb Casablanca plant, the OEE figures reached 48.65 %, which is below the accepted OEE group performance. This required immediate actions to achieve OEE improvement. This Master thesis focuses on the application of Six Sigma DMAIC methodology in the OEE improvement on the Bottomer Line AD2378 in Papsac Maghreb Casablanca plant. First, the Six Sigma DMAIC and OEE usage in operation measurement will be discussed. Afterwards, the different DMAIC phases will allow the identification of improvement focus, the identification of OEE low performance causes and the design of improvement solutions. These will be implemented to allow further tracking of improvement impact on the plant operations.

The primary objective is to identify the critical factors that have a natural impact on the performance measurement system. It is important to make correct decisions related to measurement systems, which are based on the complex business environment. The performance measurement system is combined with a very complex non-linear factor. The Six Sigma methodology is seen as one potential approach at every organisational level. It will be linked to the performance and financial measurement as well as to the analytical thinking on which the viewpoint of management depends. The complex systems are connected to the customer relationship study. As the primary throughput can be seen in a new well-defined performance measurement structure that will also be facilitated as will an analytical multifactor system. These critical factors should also be seen as a business innovation opportunity at the same time. This master's thesis has been divided into two different theoretical parts. The empirical part consists of both action-oriented and constructive research approaches with an empirical case study. The secondary objective is to seek a competitive advantage factor with a new analytical tool and the Six Sigma thinking. Process and product capabilities will be linked to the contribution of complex system. These critical barriers will be identified by the performance measuring system. The secondary throughput can be recognised as the product and the process cost efficiencies which throughputs are achieved with an advantage of management. The performance measurement potential is related to the different productivity analysis. Productivity can be seen as one essential part of the competitive advantage factor.

The detection of testosterone abuse in sports is routinely achieved through the 'steroidal module' of the Athlete Biological Passport by GC-MS(/MS) quantification of selected endogenous anabolic androgenic steroids (EAAS) from athletes' urines. To overcome some limitations of the "urinary steroid profile" such as the presence of confounding factors (ethnicity, enzyme polymorphism, bacterial contamination, and ethanol), ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) measurements of blood concentrations of testosterone, its major metabolites, and precursors could represent an interesting and complementary strategy. In this work, two UHPLC-MS/MS methods were developed for the quantification of testosterone and related compounds in human serum, including major progestogens, corticoids, and estrogens. The validated methods were then used for the analyses of serum samples collected from 19 healthy male volunteers after oral and transdermal testosterone administration. Results from unsupervised multiway analysis allowed variations of target analytes to be assessed simultaneously over a 96-h time period. Except for alteration of concentration values due to the circadian rhythm, which concerns mainly corticosteroids, DHEA, and progesterone, significant variations linked to the oral and transdermal testosterone administration were observed for testosterone, DHT, and androstenedione. As a second step of analysis, the longitudinal monitoring of these biomarkers using intra-individual thresholds showed, in comparison to urine, significant improvements in the detection of testosterone administration, especially for volunteers with del/del genotype for phase II UGT2B17 enzyme, not sensitive to the main urinary marker, T/E ratio. A substantial extension of the detection window after transdermal testosterone administration was also observed in serum matrix. The longitudinal follow-up proposed in this study represents a first example of 'blood steroid profile' in doping control analysis, which can be proposed in the future as a complement to the 'urinary module' for improving steroid abuse detection capabilities.

Business actions do not take place in isolation. Complementary competencies and capabilities are the most important resources in the exponential knowledge growth. These resources are partially accessed via business partners. A company needs partners and the capability to cooperate, but also the awareness of the competitive tension, when operating in the market with multiple actors. The co-opetition research studies the occurrence and the forms of simultaneous cooperation and competition between companies or their units. Public sector’s governmental and municipal organs have been transformed into companies over the past years. Despite of their non-profit nature, public sector and public companies are adopting business doctrines from private sector towards efficient business operations. This case study aims to show, how co-opetition concept can be observed within public sector companies and in their operations with others, how public companies cooperate but also compete with others and why this happens. This thesis also explicates advantages and disadvantages of the co-opetition phenomenon.

We have studied the motor abilities and associative learning capabilities of adult mice placed in different enriched environments. Three-month-old animals were maintained for a month alone (AL), alone in a physically enriched environment (PHY), and, finally, in groups in the absence (SO) or presence (SOPHY) of an enriched environment. The animals' capabilities were subsequently checked in the rotarod test, and for classical and instrumental learning. The PHY and SOPHY groups presented better performances in the rotarod test and in the acquisition of the instrumental learning task. In contrast, no significant differences between groups were observed for classical eyeblink conditioning. The four groups presented similar increases in the strength of field EPSPs (fEPSPs) evoked at the hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapse across classical conditioning sessions, with no significant differences between groups. These trained animals were pulse-injected with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) to determine hippocampal neurogenesis. No significant differences were found in the number of NeuN/BrdU double-labeled neurons. We repeated the same BrdU study in one-month-old mice raised for an additional month in the above-mentioned four different environments. These animals were not submitted to rotarod or conditioned tests. Non-trained PHY and SOPHY groups presented more neurogenesis than the other two groups. Thus, neurogenesis seems to be related to physical enrichment at early ages, but not to learning acquisition in adult mice.

Species may cope with rapid habitat changes by distribution shifts or adaptation to new conditions. A common feature of these responses is that they depend on how the process of dispersal connects populations, both demographically and genetically. We analyzed the genetic structure of a near-threatened high-Arctic seabird, the ivory gull (Pagophila eburnea) in order to infer the connectivity among gull colonies. We analyzed 343 individuals sampled from 16 localities across the circumpolar breeding range of ivory gulls, from northern Russia to the Canadian Arctic. To explore the roles of natal and breeding dispersal, we developed a population genetic model to relate dispersal behavior to the observed genetic structure of worldwide ivory gull populations. Our key finding is the striking genetic homogeneity of ivory gulls across their entire distribution range. The lack of population genetic structure found among colonies, in tandem with independent evidence of movement among colonies, suggests that ongoing effective dispersal is occurring across the Arctic Region. Our results contradict the dispersal patterns generally observed in seabirds where species movement capabilities are often not indicative of dispersal patterns. Model predictions show how natal and breeding dispersal may combine to shape the genetic homogeneity among ivory gull colonies separated by up to 2800 km. Although field data will be key to determine the role of dispersal for the demography of local colonies and refine the respective impacts of natal versus breeding dispersal, conservation planning needs to consider ivory gulls as a genetically homogeneous, Arctic-wide metapopulation effectively connected through dispersal.

JXTA is a mature set of open protocols, with morethan 10 years of history, that enable the creation and deployment of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, allowing the execution of services in a distributed manner. Throughout its lifecycle, ithas slowly evolved in order to appeal a broad set of different applications. Part of this evolution includes providing basic security capabilities in its protocols in order to achieve some degree of message privacy and authentication. However, undersome contexts, more advanced security requirements should be met, such as anonymity. There are several methods to attain anonymity in generic P2P networks. In this paper, we proposehow to adapt a replicated message-based approach to JXTA, by taking advantage of its idiosyncracies and capabilities.
